How I found Potato Jet: "Here's a $500 Canon camera that's amazing for getting video of your dog" Why I stayed with Potato Jet: "Here's a $76,000 Arri camera that's amazing for getting video of your dog"
I love so deeply that, while living the absolute dream and getting to meet with ARRI designers before the camera's even announced, you drop the line _"now it looks like a flying Pokemon!"_ about an $80,000 piece of equipment. Never change, Gene.
Resolution became irrelevant to cinema cameras -- and even detrimental -- once they started pushing above 2.5k. Even 4k is just way too much. This is frankly how Netflix ruined cinema; the 4k mandates are pushing filmmakers in the absolute wrong direction. Now everything has this glossy, hyperrealistic look that just sucks the soul of the moving image. There is art in imperfection, and a big part of movie magic has always come from the medium. And we're destroying that medium because a bunch of dipshits at a billion-dollar streaming company said so. Nobody watches The Godfather and wishes it was in 4k. Nobody watches ANY great old movie and wishes it was in 4k. The whole conversation is absurd.

I'm still learning about dynamic range, Is the Alexa 35's 17 stops more impressive than the Red V-raptor's 17 stops? Are Arri's brightest stops better?
Yes, in general Arri tends to underrate dynamic range, where Red overrates it, so like a 17 stop red camera is the same as an old alexa, i've even heard some people say its less.
ayo didn't expect to see you here, but yeah, red uses highlight recovery which basically remakes the clipped infos from different color channels, most of them time it's ok but sometimes the highlights look monochrome, so their 17 stops is not only overrated but based on some unusable highlight recovered range

This camera is oozing with class. ARRI has done an out-of-this-world job with this camera. Will I ever get the chance to use it, probably not. However, their dedication to quality over quantity shows heavily with this release. Hopefully the focus ARRI has put into their color and dynamic range reproduction will trickle down into the rest of the camera industry. The only companies I can see getting close or surpassing would be Sony or Black Magic Design. RED has some serious work to do with their color reproduction if they want to compete. Yellow and blue look so artificial with RED. That brief test done on the anamorphic lenses with the orange and blue lights looked so natural and clean. Anyways, great job on this video. It's awesome you get to work with ARRI to reveal this camera to the world.
I live in Munich next to the ARRI Headquarter. In the meantime, ARRI who was founded in 1917 in Munich by two film ethusiasts (Mr. Arnold & Mr. Richter, what ARRI stands for) has a 105-year company history of creating cinematographic equipment that wrote film history and coined the production and visual style of tens of thousands films around the globe. For decades, they developed und produced analog film cameras, every model at the pinnaccle of the respective cinematographic technology of its time. The last analog film cameras they released were the Arricam Studio and Arricam Lite in the year 2000. They are planning to maintain all their analog cameras still in rental for at least the next ten years to come. Now, for more than ten years, ARRI has managed to successfully transform their decade-long technical know-how and experience from the analog film technology to the digital era of cinematography. What a fantastic in depth video. Really balances practical on the job usage with the ethos behind it, not just technical stuff. Most interesting to me was the talking to the guys from Arri, you can really get a sense of how everything is designed with the creative user in mind and you can see why they’re so successful at what they do. Thanks! (Hope you hit a million)
The comment about color gamuts at 4:25 is a bit bizarre. Panasonic has V-gamut, Sony has S-gamut, and Canon has cinema gamut. Every brand has a color gamut that is well beyond Rec 2020. It'd be harder to find one that doesn't than one that does lol.
@@LukasSchroederFilms Prove it. Arri Gamut isn't being compared to any other brand in that chart. It actually doesn't cover a bigger space either. Look up V-Gamut and Canon Cinema Gamut and comeback.
So bigger isn’t always better. It’s about relationship to the data coming off the sensor itself as well as how that data scales to commonly used gamuts. Some have very large gamut coverage but the scaling and interpolation required to get to P3 can cause severe artifacts. This was well seen in the Alexa mini and neon colors especially in the blue channel. The new color pipeline greatly improves in this area.
@@wdigivideo All I ask is for proof or some type of evidence. Color Space Transforms are quite well known to be non-destructive in BRAW and mainstream brand cameras. Showing a blue neon color proves nothing if there is no side by side comparison to another camera brand. All I'm saying is it's alarming when they say companies don't focus on gamuts (wrong) and then their own argument is based on gamut coverage and ACES compatibility (common features). Look, Arri's are obviously awesome, their sales teams just need to avoid dipping into BS territory. "Gamut" is also coverage by definition. They should just say color accuracy, and then make a nuanced argument.

Dude! You’re a freaking ROCKSTAR! 🤟🏽😝 Awesome video! Blown away by that dynamic range! And the colors! Holy crap! And that quick draw 🔫 was impressive 😂 so many great moments in this video man haha. You’re a legend bro. Great job 👏🏽
I do have to ask though, why is it so difficult to “recreate” arri colours in post with cameras that have so much flexibility? What is it that separates it so much?
Because it's a starting point, you still have to then grade the arri to get the look you want. If you've already gone a fair way to make it look like Base arri footage you have less room to move for your own personal flair
if the gamut diagrams inform my answer i would say that barnaby is right and would ad that arri gamut is significantly larger than rec709 which means, maybe rec709 captures 16mil colours, well arri is capturing 64M...maybe it like how you get banding in 8bit images vs 16bit cause 8bit doesnt have enough colours to represent the gradation
Take someone with 20-20 vision who can see color perfectly, and then take someone who has an astigmatism because of which is slightly colorblind. You can give that person corrective lenses, but they won’t see 100% on par with the person who had no issues to begin with. Similarly, you can shoot on another camera with similar latitude and convert to Arri’s color space in post, or try to match by hand, but it won’t be as clean as if you had shot on Arri in the first place.
it's shown in several places in the video when potato jet rack changes the exposure. the chroma doesn't shoot as high per exposure range which means gamut colors don't clip in the luminance channel. This is hard to match in other cameras because its essentially done even before debayering and would require a plugin to map chroma to luma across all colors equally.
one thing that has changed dramatically! form RUclipsrs reviewing professional equipment that they don't use at all over the last 5 years is that they finally understand what makes a good professional camera ... that it is not the tech specs.
I can't wait for other manufacturers to catch up with the dynamic range Imagine a black magic camera with 15 stops of actual dynamic range for less than 1500 bucks. That would be awesome
They almost can't, ARRI has an absurd amount of patents on sensor technology (rightly so) that prohibits some major advancements from other companies to step up their game.
They have caught up. The only reason why this camera was pushed to 17 stops is because Arri lost is choke hold of the market after their competitors pushed them off the top with upgrades like this. While Arri did a greta job with this camera, they are years behind where they should have been
@@Mssmilelovejoy I just want a camera that can shoot at a high dynamic range, fast rolling shutter and has good colour accuracy. This is why I'm excited about the alexa even tho I'm aware I cannot buy it. I would love this to come down to cheaper cameras
Wow I loved the lessons in this. Each stop getting the same amount of data instead of being linear is super interesting! I wish other (cheaper) cameras focused more on that stuff instead of chasing resolution.
Every modern camera brand does that. He just explained how log works. I swear Arri sales team does a great job at making them seem more unique than they are. They are the best at dynamic range with 17 stops, but all log curves distribute data this way due to known science. Very few cameras shoot linear raw these days (Sigma FP is a rare one that does).
It's not unique. What they are describing is a logarithmic gamma curve. Sony S-Log, Fuji F-Log, Canon C-Log, Nikon N-Log, Arri LogC, Panasonic V-Log, Blackmagic Film Gamma, etc. Basically very company records this way in their mid-range to high end cameras. The thing that is unique is 13-bit log RAW and 12-bit ProRes, to my knowledge all other companies do at most 10-bit ProRes and 12-bit log RAW or 12/14/16-bit linear RAW.
Holy cow the textures are SO COOL. can’t wait for 5 years from now when I get something similar in my Sony mirrorless cameras 😂. They look so natural, not just like slapping an effect, LUT, or filter on. It looks so intentional and perfect.
I never thought I would watch a 40 minute video about a cinema camera that I’d never afford, but here I am
right hahahah

at 7:38 i thought you were going to say “so i’m going to be giving a couple of these arri cameras away. just make sure to like and sub.” lmaoo
Another masterclass of creating an entertaining yet educating video, smashed it man🔥
Yep thats Potato Jet videos for me, i mostly watch him for his calming yet interesting videos!
10:27 i love how the dog is just minding its own business and walking with its small cute feet 😂😚
Seventeen stops of dynamic range.
SEVENTEEN!!!
My goodness.
This camera is just so next level. Can't wait to own one!
Potato, this is a absolutely fantastic video. One of the best I've ever seen on Arri cameras. Now I know why these cameras are used on nearly every "Best Picture"" winner for the last 10 years. You have done a really good job helping understand the Arri design and engineering science, keep up the great work!
i don't know, it looks a little grainy ;)
FINALLY, I have been waiting for this man. U just make arri cooler than anything. Love both of ya
Love the fact that you guys had Isaiah Mustafa one of my favorite actors
Bro you totally nailed this video. Great work! Everyone’s dream camera has finally arrived!
Your enthusiasm is why I continue to watch your videos. The editing of this video is awesome. Keep up the good work potato!
You make the best camera and related gear reviews and am dying to see you hit 1M subs, been here since you were at about 500k. Keep them videos coming.
My back was hurting just looking at that rig! 😮
Watched the entire video without skipping a sec and i have to say .. boy those shots look GLORIOUS !!!!! And the entire video as usual fun entertaining and informative 💥
I love the throwbacks at the end of the video! Also love these super long vids. Keep it up dude! This has me so hyped for the future
Such an insanely good video. From the basic information to the more in depth information to reach all audiences. Arri has some amazing technology and I’m glad they work with Dr. Jet to share what they’re working on with poor folk like me. Well done sir. 👍
As pro photographer who's now jumping into production industry, knowing all about working with ARRI cameras like this helps me so much
What a beautiful piece of equipment. This is why I love watching this channel.
Fantastic video, well edited, great job jumping back and forth for each topic. Get that 1 million subs!
What a presentation brother 🔥👏🏼💯, and loved the specs and capabilities of the new breed from ARRI family. Commenting this as a entry level dop, waiting for the day where i can play with this camera. Keep up the great work brother. Presentation skills 💯, informative & fun to watch. Love from INDIA 🏹💙
I Think i Counted 3 times my jaw dropped from the footage. this camera is incredible.
I actually watched the entire thing! Captivating! Thanks Gene for bringing us into part of your world.
This is the first video that I’ve seen about the new Alexa and it looks amazing!
The way you edit these videos is so unique and keeps the attention of the viewer. Great work!!
IT'S SO GLORIOUS
Alexa as a stream webcam will pay dividends 😁
0:47 Accurate description of what we should be doing when purchasing new camera, looking at the overall image vs specs!
These deep dives into film industry products sets Gene apart from all of these "YT influencers". always awesome. keep'em coming.
you are in the big leagues!! Gene! congratulatios!!
12:17 Kari's hollywood moment where she walks towards the camera, looking good!
I absolutely love these types of videos. your the only person in your field or catagory that has access to this stuff and knows more or less what the technical things are. your killing it gene. also your last name is the coolest last name ever. CAPTAIN NAGATA!!!!
Dude seriously I don’t get why 88k people can’t just subscribe to you right now. Awesome vid!
As someone who shoots fire spinning, so awesome to see that detail in the flames!
For some reason youtube auto plays (all the time) the other arri video you did with this guy when you made him punch through your back drop... I'm glad it didn't scare them away and you made this video. Thanks for the good watch!
FINALLY!!!! I was HOPING you had an upload of this!
Potato Jet makes his videos so interesting and entertaining... I always love to watch.
Somehow this is a banger documentary that makes me want an Arri.
Listen man this was one of your most enjoyable videos ever. I could tell you were super pumped about this! Keep that energy mate
Definitely one of the best review/introduction video for a camera that I have seen!
Recreating arri color is not difficult. I saw both blackmagic raw and canon magic lantern raw can be edited same color with arri side by side.
Yay for the ErgoRig ! - It got the SOC award this year !
Dude your stuff gets more and more epic each week. Kudos.
Mannn this was an awesome video. Everything was explained to its point. Gene awesome work editing the video perfectly.
one thing that has changed dramatically! form RUclipsrs reviewing professional equipment that they don't use at all over the last 5 years is that they finally understand what makes a good professional camera ... that it is not the tech specs.
I can't wait for other manufacturers to catch up with the dynamic range
Imagine a black magic camera with 15 stops of actual dynamic range for less than 1500 bucks. That would be awesome
They almost can't, ARRI has an absurd amount of patents on sensor technology (rightly so) that prohibits some major advancements from other companies to step up their game.
@@user-ti9zc1xv2b oof.
I hate patents. They are almost always worse for the companies and consumers.
@@8lec_R Actually, fair point.
This is amazing!!!!
I still love my Bmcc 2.5k dynamic range but the 17 Dr is amazing
Arri…dang…
Quality over quantity.
Such a gorgeous image they put out.
man you are a awesome guy, doing what you love living the life!!
the Alexa my favorite cine Cam of all time!!
Gene, you by far IMO. Are the best for informative videos. You really dive into the tech behind stuff. I love it. Amazing work.
Incredible. this video and the camera is incredible. 🔥
great video guys! thanks for all the passion you put into these docs i will def be a regular now!
I didn't think you could top your Michael Bay interview video. This totally killed.
Great overview. Arri is doing some excellent things
Holy cow the textures are SO COOL. can’t wait for 5 years from now when I get something similar in my Sony mirrorless cameras 😂.
They look so natural, not just like slapping an effect, LUT, or filter on. It looks so intentional and perfect.
