    No AF joystick? No problem. Use the R8's touchscreen as a joystick with the touch and drag AF setting enabled while looking through the viewfinder. Way better than the directional pad and arguably better and faster than a joystick. I set mine to absolute positioning with the top-right active touch area. It's super fast and smooth to change AF tracking points and better than sony's similar implementation on their viewfinder cameras. When viewing on the LCD monitor, just tap to focus track.
    While you can't assign APS-C crop mode to a button, you can set it to a custom setting on the command dial (C1, C2). Set C1 for 180 degree shutter full frame and C2 for identical settings but with APS-C video recording. Quick flip of the dial and you're there.

    The lack of buttons on the N/S/E/W dial is strange, and the false stabilization at 7:27 .... It's very disappointing to me. The fact that it's not GYRO makes it to where you can't use the Digital IS or Enhanced IS to crop in (like Sonys clear image zoom) when on sticks.
    I love the 10-bit 4k footage, and its full frame, so those problems weren't enough to return it. Everything else about this camera is amazing, especially for $1500.
    As far as. overheating, I've shot 3 SD cards at 4k 23.98 c-log 10bit with no issues (2 hours each totaling 6 hours), up to 3 or 4 temperature bars as well. This camera is great for its price, Thanks for your review videos, Pascal!

    I have 4 canon R5C to be consisten when I’m shooting wedding videos . However I just snagged an used R8 for 1250$ because how small it is . My hands are also small so the grip on the R5c is sometimes too much for me. The R8 will be my camera for going out on vacation with my family or even on a small Zhiyun gimbal !!! It’s funny I’ve seen so many people in comments talking crap about this camera overheating, but from what I’ve seen nobody has had any issue with overheating at 4k 24p.
    The way people talk in the comments is like you’d be doing an interview in hot weather filming at 60p and that’s just not a realistic use case anyways. For most realistic work I’d rather have this camera over the R6 mkii for the $1000 difference. I don’t see any reason to upgrade until you get to the R5 mkii but that is a whole different price bracket where you are getting into budget cinema cameras.

    The R8 is amazing. I love shooting with mine. As an amauture photographer its perfect for me as a travel camera. Between that and my old Canon EOS 6D Mark II DSLR and my range of F4 L lenses and Sigma Art prime lenses, the quality of photos etc is off the charts. Also... the autofocus... so good.
    On a side note, you don't even need their L lenses if you aren't worried about weather sealing and a consistant f2.8 or or f4 apperture rating ... Their standard RF lenses are actually really great as well. Canon have really hit a home run with all of their R series cameras and RF lenses L and non L range imo.

    It seems like the compromises for this camera are thus:
    no IBIS, so if you want it super smooth get a gimbal or deal with OK but potentially wonky stabilization.
    battery life is super small, so get extra batteries or invest in a battery grip.
    can't use it for longform one take content, so you probably won't be able to do a vodcast for more than an hour without breaks unless you A.) shoot in 1080p and B.) maybe run it off a power bank to extend the battery life. but no problem for short clip shoot to edit indie filmmakers.
    no 6k even though the 4k is oversampled from 6k so you still get the benefits of added sharpness and detail from 6k. not a dealbreaker unless you intend to ship the final product in 4k and still crop in for VFX work or something.
    no raw video output via HDMI for atomos recorders.
    For a 1500$ camera i'd say thats more than a fair compromise considering you still get fantastic low light, an incredible sensor identical to a premium 2500$ camera, CLOG 3 and a bunch of great photography features that punch above its weight all in a lightweight easily gimbal-able package. I think i'm going to buy it.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Год назад

      Or use OIS lenses as mentioned. The overheating is no issue for long-form content in my opinion.

    • @Ben-rz9cf
      @Ben-rz9cf Год назад

      @@pascalbasel I've already got a collection of EF lenses i'll be adapting but sadly none of them have IS. Its no problem though because i already have a gimbal that supports a much higher weight limit. And i'm not shooting interviews for hours on end anyway, but even if i was, i already have a 45w usb C power bank, and i don't think 4K 60fps will be necessary for that kind of content... if 4k 24fps is still overheating, 1080p will probably suffice for that style of content since exceptional quality is not really the goal in that scenario. Seems that almost all the flaws of this camera can be mitigated in some way.

      Interesting indeed, but I also bought the R6 II after the R8 was released. It seemed like a case of "buy it nice or buy it twice". It's a great camera with almost all of the same capabilities, but with no IBIS for mid to long focal lengths, smaller batteries and a less durable body, it makes the R6 II look like a lot more of a longer lasting investment and a better user experience.

      No, the record button can't be programmed in movie mode (I'm not talking about photo). Cropping in the edit for video means cropping from a 4K resolution, while cropping in camera means cropping from 6K. So in camera you keep an actual 4K resolution.

  • @frostgodx
    @frostgodx Год назад

    Pascal, I noted in all your videos and comments that in the end you chose the R8 over the R6ii? If I want to do talking head RUclips no more than 15mins with 60p b-roll, light vlogging, filming and pictures of family travel would you also select the R8? It seems to line up well with your uses being similar to mine.
    My only thoughts and reservations are the R8 battery being poor, the R6ii ibis wobble while vlogging, the R8 grip being much shorter though I don’t have a problem bringing extra batteries or buying the grip extension if need be since it is so portable. Or in the case of the Ibis wobble on R6ii simply using enhanced digital stabilization at 15 mm making it closer to 24 to avoid the wobble but I don’t want degradation of the video (I don’t think it does because it’s downsampled from 6k in camera for this?)
    I would also primarily be using the 15-35 2.8 like you I love that lens. Would appreciate your expert opinion in my case. Thank you

      Canon stop the 3rd party lenses for RF mount (R8 uses RF mount). So, you need to have that "RF adapter".

    What are the best lenses for a 3 person studio in a tight space . Are the F/4 lenses good for studio lighting or should i go for f2.8, they are too expensive for me at this point and i wonder if it is worth it to pay rwice as much if there is good lighting, besides some primes

      The only issue would be the battery life and overheating. If the studio is air conditioned plus you're using a battery dummy, it should be fine.

      If you buy a portable charger and connect to the R8, the heat goes to the portable charger.

    Die nächste Kamera, für die ich wieder viel Geld ausgebe, wird die sein, die das Stabilisierungsproblem ein für alle mal gelöst hat. Keine Ahnung wie, aber die Kamerahersteller müssen das hinkriegen, IBIS ist es irgendwie nicht...mindestens eine Stabilisierung wie eine Gopro oder Smartphone rechtfertigt mehrere Tausend Euro oder Dollar.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Год назад +1

      Das Problem ist, dass man bei elektronischer Stabilisierung den Shutterspeed hoch haben muss, da es sonst Motionartifakte gibt. Zumindest anscheinend sofern nicht durchs Objektiv torstabilisiert wird. Ich fände super, wenn Canon ähnlich, wie Sony sowas wie Catalyst Browse mit Gyros Data machen würde. Das zusammen mit den ganzen OIS Objektiven wäre krass gut. Oder eine digitale Korrektur der Verzerrungen vom IBIS.

    I think that the R6 mark ii is much more future proof investment, with ibis on the sensor, semi pro camera, it is much better suited for someone who wants to go full frame. For 1500$, the same price of the R8, I would go for the high end Canon apsc camera, the R7. So for my opinion, 1500$ should go for the very good apsc camera,instead of the entry level, somewhat crippled ff camera.
