I spent 2 weeks in Japan with my husband, parents, and sister! We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, mt. Fuji, and Kanazawa. I, of course, brought a new camera and lens with me to test - the Canon EOS R8 and its kit lens, the Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. This video is the sample footage I got with that set up, all filmed in 4k at 24fps.

Yeah I think from other reports the R8 has the same AF system as the R6 mk II. It’s got to be that schlocky kits lens. The images and color science are beautiful . Thanks. 😊

IIRC, in your vid you say that the R8 does not have any IS in camera.
It does though.
The r8 does not have in-body image stabilization. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

I actually bought the RF 24-50 kit lens separately to use as a walk-around and throw-away lens for my R8. I have the RF 15-35 L lens, but the 24-50 is so compact that it makes it so much more enjoyable if you have enough light.
My guess with your autofocus issues is that you maybe need a firmware update or maybe the lens wasn’t allowing the camera to produce enough light. All cameras struggle to focus in low light, and the RF 24-50 most likely wasn’t enough even after cranking up your ISO.
It is a very compact lens! Not sure if the firmware was the problem with the autofocus, but you're right, low light was definitely an issue.

I feel bad that you used the kit lens. I would have brought the 70 to 200 2.8 or even the 50mm 1.8. Looks like you had a good time.

Great footage. I have a question. Since you shoot in manual and standard picture profile what are your video settings? I’m guessing 1/50 for the shutter speed, the biggest aperture the lens will open to (i’m assuming it is around 5?), but what about iso? lol
I get confused with and most videos I’ve seen is clog3 footage with color corrections so their iso starts at 800. I’m assuming that is different when shooting standard?

Thank you so much for the kind words, I appreciate it! :) As far as video settings, I adjust it with each new environment, but generally I try to keep my ISO and f-stop as low as possible and keep my shutter speed between 1/50 and 1/300. If it's really sunny then I would raise the f-stop as needed and if it was dark I would do the same with ISO. It's all a balancing act! I hope that helps!

With on an off filming, 1 battery lasted me about 2 days. And it was all handheld! :)

You are so welcome! There was really no overheating problem and it was delightfully light to carry around. My sister is the bees' knees! Plus she is single and ready to mingle ;)
She comes with her own camera, haha? I bought the R8 body and this lens separately and still waiting on the camera to arrive. All I know from personal experience is this lens is really light. This video gives me confidence that it's going to be a nice walk around camera compared to my DSLR. The R8 is a replacement for my Canon M5 and 5D Mark III, but still want to hold on to the 5D for sports, but might not once I play arround with L glass, if I do get rid of the 5D III I might get some RF L lenses, ill use a converter for the EF lenses for now and this lens for compact mode. @@Soersha

Thanks for watching! A 10mm focal length will definitely warp your images around the edges.

Autofocus wasn't great when I used it. Could be a lens problem, who knows!

omgosh, i cant BELIEVE you paired this beast with the lame kit lens! The 50mm 1.8 is literally CHEAPER than the price of the kit lens... it would've given you absolutely stupendous quality and it would not have had any trouble autofocusing
Canon should just burn this kit lens, eh?

It looks great. You just have to know the strength and weaknesses of your gear. At the end of the day its just a tool.
Btw love all your footages in Japan. Hopefully I could buy a camera like this in the future with the RF 50mm 1.8 -that would be a perfect combo. ❤

The 50mm doesn‘t have stabilization. 35mm f1.8 would be great but a bit more expensive.

My advice, change the lens, kit lens is no no when using professional camera
The goal of this video was to show a sample of what the r8 & the kit lens that Canon designed for the r8 are both capable of. Upgrading to a professional lens is, of course, always an option if that aligns with your goals!
what lens would you recommend?
@@mirsthy rf 50mm f 1.8 is quite good for starter very versatile
@@Soersha trust me i have lot of friend who bought expensive body and paired it with kit lens, and disappointed by the result and ended up not using the camera
For video shooting, stabilization is required, which the lens has. The video is great. The lens worked much better for video for its price. Do not recommend 50 mm without a stabilizer - the result will be worse. Then already 35 mm 1.8
kit lenses are terrible, get a prime with faster aperture for better autofocus
I like some of Canon's kit lenses, but not this one!
