    Great video and I agree to all you said about this camera. I own this camera very recently and I bought it after I had the chance to rent it. Before the Canon R8 I had and used a Nikon Z50 for 2.5 years more or less, mirrorless crop sensor. Good camera overall, with some pro functionality, small and compact.
    Also, I'm not professional photographer, I don't sell my work, but I know quite a lot about this domain.
    So, how I used it so far my new Canon R8:
    - rented, for a small party of one of my friends, celebrating birthday of 18 years old. A party with 30 people, indoor, during the night, so: low light, crazy lights from DJ flashes, a lot of action with people dancing. As lens, I used the Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8, rented as well. Autofocus was amazing. I just rented the camera in the same day, I didn't know to much about how to take shots of dancing people, motion etc. But camera helps a lot.
    - with the same rented combo (R8+RF 24-70mm f2.8), I played taking portraits of my wife and daughter, during a sunny beautiful autumn day;
    ---> When I put the pictures on the bigger computer screen - boom! I just was amazed by the quality, colors, and dynamic range of the pictures. Absolutely stunning. Far far away from my Nikon Z50. Incredible details of skin, texture, how easy for post-processing.
    Having this great pre-experience, I bought it immediately one week later (on black Friday), with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1, and Canon RF 50mm f1.8. And I used it during a 3-days city-break in Malta island. Super travel camera, light and compact, the body and the lens as well. And yes, I had no extra spare-battery, neither an external powerbank, but the battery was enough for a long day of visiting and taking photos. I was surprised about that if we consider how small the battery looks.
    I love this camera. I took shots in a lot of different conditions: bright sun, shades, backlit, evening, night. It is absolutely amazing how good is dynamic range. I had a lot of shots in the sun which seemed with highlight blown up, but very well recovered in postprocessing. Also for the shadows. Yes, much much better than mine Nikon Z50.
    The overall details and texture of the walls, buildings, and all architectural stuff are much better than Nikon Z50.
    Also for the portraits, even with the "cheap kit" lens RF 24-105 f/4-7.1, the quality is great. The details and the texture of the skin is great.
    ---> Yes, I'm very happy with my Canon R8 and it doesn't compare to the aps-c sensor of Z50 (even I found a lot of opinions saying that between full-frame and crop is no big difference in image quality). I'm very happy I did the switch, even I was skeptical at the beginning.

    Just bought it and took photos of my wife and kids. What an amazing camera right out of the box. I’m completely new to cameras and photography. I had purchased a Canon Rebel T7 and returned it, so glad I paid a little extra for the R8 and an RF 35, 50, and 85mm f1.8

    2:21 I've posted this on other channels, but it's worth repeating - I was shocked at how good the dynamic range is in the R8. It beats MANY other mirrorless cams. The quality of the noise, when it shows up, is also far more pleasing than most.

    • @mpactdesignmedia
      @mpactdesignmedia 4 месяца назад

      James, do you see any differences in the R6MKII files when it comes to pushing/pulling shadows and highlights? I've asked this elsewhere and can't get a straight answer. It's always, "should be the same" - and that's not what i asked. I realize the sensor is the same, but I've seen 'scores' showing the R8 to be a tad better in DR. TIA!

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад +1

      Thank you DRIS! That's correct, I just expose so the highlights are just under clipping on the histogram. It's not an exact science though, but generally I over expose where possible whilst still protecting the highlights.

    Bought the R8 and it's been a really good companion! My other camera is a M200 that's really compact, but the R8 event being bigger, it's easy to carry and the weight doesn't annoy me.
    About battery, I noticed that it charges with around 8W, and I can use my phone (Samsung S21+) to charge when necessary. I didn't feel the necesssity to buy another battery yet.
    The only thing I miss is IBIS for night photography, but due to size and price, I think that's okay and in the future I expect to buy a lens with IS.

If you can see their jpgs, you will see that they are really beautiful. Even more than my R5 and other Canon cameras I have. I don't often travel but appreciate the small size, just not quite enough to resist Canon's EG-E1 extension grip for my pinky finger (the champaign gold "Asian" version, for a dash of contrast against the black body!)
    Now it's almost as large as my 6D, a camera I thought was being replaced by my R8 acquisition. Nope, I'm now dedicated to learning how to best use the 6D within its focusing limitations, despite buying the R8 for its vastly better AF. I won't claim to be rational here, especially since after recently buying the R8 I fell into a rabbit hole of old CCD digicams. Don't judge me.
    I miss the rear control dial, despite this having a rear control dial. But c'mon, it might as well be a Nikon or Pentax or Sony rear dial. My Elan II has the proper, large dial. My 50D retained it. After that it began to shrink on the prosumer models. So Canon has been preparing me for quite a while.

      Hey Benedict. They are just slightly different focal lengths. 28mm is wider than 35mm in the sense that it can fit more in the frame. 35mm is slightly more zoomed in. So each lens definitely has its own use case depending on the scene or the kind of shot you want to capture.

      Purely for portrait photography you could even consider the original EOS R. Between the R6 and R8, you won’t notice much difference in image quality in photo so I think the ergonomics will be the biggest factor. Man I really wish Canon would make some non plastic fantastic small and light primes like a 35 1.4, 50 1.4 etc. The colors are nice but you gotta admit those cheapy lenses from Canon have zero 3d pop and it makes the images look flat. Sony is really putting them to shame for small and light lenses. I enjoyed my time shooting the R5 and R6 but Canon forced me to switch to Sony by not opening up the RF mount along with not releasing their own glass for it.

      I think you would get exceptional image quality but yes especially on the smaller R8 body you will see some jitters in video. For photography I think you would be fine but it would be a very front heavy set up and the smaller grip of the R8 might make it quite an uncomfortable setup.

    I can live without IBIS and other things, but I still do not understand why they decide to put such a crappy battery into R8. This is okay if someone has only one camera, but this is nonsense to have R8 as backup of R5/R6 cameras. In that case you have to thing about second set of batteries, charge them separately etc. In nowadays we often taking many time about our Mother Earth and environment and Canon not helping with this.

    Why not shoot in electronic vs 1st curtain? For travel and stills? Subscribed thx . I just bought it. Only have 50mm 1.8 for now

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Год назад +1

      short version: You may get a skewed perspective with fast-moving subjects. This is not motion blur per se.
      long version: Electronic and mechanical are both focal plane shutters, where one curtain (or scan) opens (or looks at) part of the frame and the rest of the frame is captured as the shutter opening (or scan) passes over it.
      We're describing a "rolling shutter" overall, and electronic ones are more susceptible to that effect than mechanical ones are, despite electronic shutters able to "move faster" (more FPS) than mechanical ones. Mechanical shutters will be susceptible based on speed and motion, whereas electronic shutters will be susceptible to that AND how fast the thing can scan regardless of setting.
      The classic example would be an image taken from a car, where the telephone polls all look like they're leaning.
      --> With my R8 I can capture a tennis serve sequence using the highest rate electronic shutter without much noticeable issue. If using mechanical, I might preserve the shapes of both the racket and tennis ball better, but not enough for me to usually care, because with mechanical I wouldn't even be getting the shots where racket meets ball in the first place unless very lucky with the shutter button.

    • @bigbluerios
      @bigbluerios Год назад

      @thenexthobby got it! Yes I have noticed that too. I can capture just about anything w the electronic vs the 1st curtain. I use electronic more often. 1st curtain for complete still shots . Street photos I use electronic amd it all looks fine

    • @thenexthobby
      @thenexthobby Год назад

      And *I misspoke* in my depiction above. But I'll leave that comment as-is. 1st curtain here is still electronic, not mechanical. It's just that Canon have optimized it (or, limited it) to act as a low-cost mechanical, if that makes sense.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  Год назад

      I think the electronic shutter is generally excellent for travel stills, you may see some skewing if there happens to be fast moving objects in the frame such as moving vehicles.

    • @bigbluerios
      @bigbluerios Год назад

      @JamesReader yep I'm noticing that more and more as I shoot outside. But inside with lights you can see some of the bannding and I switch to 1st curtain with anti flicker on.
