- When I first started I honestly thought this one was too rusty to be restored! It took a lot of sandblasting, welding, sanding and filling, powder coat paint, and replacement parts, but at the end of the day I think it turned out pretty good, and ended up being one of my better restorations!

This was an incredible restoration. I'm an old lady but I would totally play with that restored truck!
p
Maryann Anderson yo grandma, can I play with the truck after you're done?
@@lukeskywalkerjediknight2125 Absolutely. My parents taught me to share.
What matters is that you are young at heart :)
@@Amonkai man, this wholesome thread with Luke Skywalker, a nice old gal and even Big Boss' avatar. This is good, isnt it?
I would have bet once you started getting the rust off, the truck would just disappear. Lol
Nah
Tonkas just grow more rust
It's like a second paint job, really
Never underestimate toys made before the 90s. The paint may kill you but that truck will be around at the end of time
@@louisb.6149 you are right. Before the 90's stuff was built to last.
The red looks good ! But it was originally Lyme Tyme Green !
I noticed that, too
Maybe he had a buyer for it the they wanted it painted red
They also had a purple truck like this, that's what I had.
@@shonaboufford7342 حهعخ22222صصصصه
I could tell through all that rust & all!
I’m truly flabbergasted at this transformation! Well done, Sir!
But for the love of all things holy... please clean your oven glass! My OCD is killing me! 🤪
I noticed that too! Lol
I was thinking it would be a miracle if could restore that in it's condition. Amazing.
Thanks!!

@@TRGRESTORATIONS your doing a excellent job with these restorations 📼
These restorations calm my anxiety and I'm always impressed with the results. Thanks for these videos! ❤
I've never once seen anyone sand the paint back down to near bare metal. Where did you find that thing? At the bottom of a lake for 40 years?
Hell of a job, again!
Maj It was used as filler/primer. Bit quick to read.
My Tonka Truck was forgotten by me in a sandbox for 10 years with similar result... Now, truing to restore it!
TB VN uhyyb
I have the same truck but where do i order replacement parts. Plus mine had a blow engine in the bed.
If you can restore that Tonka, you can restore anything, it was the worst I've ever seen. GREAT JOB, TRG!!.
Holy crap! Where did you find this one? In the piles of road salt? 😂
I saw them, they buried under the road, but nothing worked
Excelente restauración yo lo veía como un proyecto difícil de lograr, bastante trabajo tomo pero el resultado es increíble felicitaciones, saludos desde Venezuela.
A master class in restoration . This must be the most rusted one I’ve seen so far. Keep up the good work. 👍👍
Stay safe and healthy. Cheers from 🇦🇺
you're alive! xD good work man, keep working like that :D
Thanks, will do!
Thank you for saving it, I didn’t think it was possible at first and most others what have junked it.
Awesome 😎
Awesome 👏
Awesome 😁
Mike Espo . Well done 👍.
There comes a point when something is beyond saving. This toy had surpassed that. But congratulations, you made it look awesome again.
Yea I thought that too but he still did a good job
I like it
I like it you did a good job
yeah. i will not even consider that a "restore" i call that a "rebuild"... it's clear that he is not longer doing this for just profits...
@@RainRoseville well think about the video revenue though
You made lots of work for yourself by wet sanding with 400 grit at that stage. Starting with 320 or even 220 dry then 400 wet would be the way to go or two more coats of the thinned filler and sanding before 1 or 2 powder coats. Nice end product tho.
0:32 where the hell you found that at the bottom of the sea?
Those aren't gloves, he slipped with a grinding wheel earlier
That is good chrome paint, but takes forever to dry and harden.
Idk why he didn't use powder chrome. Were those parts plastic?
@@avman2cl yes, that's why he used the paint, plastic part
I thought this one was beyond saving. A simply amazing job.
Amazing 👏! Great perseverance! Excellent show of skill, patience, and craftsmanship! Are you considering a refresh somehow of the yellow part? Thanks for sharing! (I hate sanding, wow lol!)
TRG, excellent work.
Heres an idea, on AReally badly rusted piece likè this i think that you should do a complete restore of one side and do nothing on the other, then that that way you could have a showcase of the fantastic work you do.
Interesting but unlikely as some of those steps require: replacing , rust removal and dis/re- assembly and painting . To do that without reinforcement of the whole piece makes no sense and may not be doable.
Do you know if the dies for pressing the metal parts of these toys still exist?
Good hard work do good 👍 things to be a marvelous of all keep it 🙂 upp
I know you didn't use any auto body filler. Back in the old days, we used to use lead. We would have an assortment of led paddles, that kind of looked like really huge soldering irons and torches to work the lead around with. filling small impurities in the sheet metal on the cars. Then with an assortment a various files and sanding boards. The metal would be perfect to paint. Maybe you should try some lead on one of these severely pitted toys. I think you would like the outcome.
Body solder is what they use now, same idea and results.
At last a restoration vid where the object of restoration is actually wrecked and not simp!y buried in a garden for a few weeks
I'm surprised you went directly to sand blasting. Would rust remover have eaten too much metal? I know there's rust converter which would have protected what was there.
I said Rust Converter to myself as well but then the crowd started cheering for the sand.
I love the way you paint the car with a gun it makes the colors more beautiful and even 😘
Wow. I remember playing with one of these trucks as a kid when I got it new..... now I feel very olde. Great job on the resto!
Creo que se me olvidó algo... mmm no importa.
(minutos después)... el primer... el primer!!!! 🤦🏽♂️🤣🤣🤣
A pesar de ello, excelente trabajo, te felicito. 👏👏👏👏👏
Yeahh.. Its been quite some time bro... Miss your work a lot dude'
Nice work. I hope I get can get my Tonka I am working on now to look that good.
This was a ‘3 wonder’ restoration: I wonder what it is, I wonder what you’re going to do with it and I wonder what it will look like when you’re done. Amazing to say the least.
I can’t believe you could save that well done.
Nice restoration, liked watching the video🔥🔥
A+ job on a true rust-bucket! Hope someone gets to appreciate all the hard work!
Thanks for watching!
Very beautiful job on that considering what you had to start with
Great restoration Tim. I thought the truck was too far gone to be repaired, but then this TRG Restorations and it was resurrected. And I like the red, that funky green color that was visible before sandblasting was not my cup of tea. Question: If the holes for the axles were rusted through, could they be repaired and how? I missed Duke, I hope he's not in quarantine. Cheers from near Clarksville.💖👍😷🍻✌
Awesome work & restoration! Simply amazing, good sir!!
Thank you very much!
Very careful work
That was literally "rust in piece."
Realmente perfecto felicitaciones 👌👏👏👏👍🤗
A restoration? No. One amazing restoration! Well done!
Many thanks!
You've done a great job with the tonka truck... I can't believe that it was the same truck if I didn't watch the restoration.
Thanks 👍
Whoa!!! From Crispy to Smooth... When ever I see you use the sandblaster I imagine how wonderful it would be if it worked on humans. Sand blast an 80 year old face back to 20 years old. Hmmm only in comic books and science fiction....btw the truck looks 40 years younger snaps to you 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃
Some look cool all rusted, would look great in a display case
(In my own and very humble opinion) The more difficult the restoration....the more satisfying the effort. Best wishes and stay healthy.
Excelente me gustan tus vídeos, aquí en México no logro conseguir algún ejemplar de estos un saludo desde la CDMX Tenochtitlan.
Once again, you have made the impossible, possible. The fact that you made an effort was credit enough but you made it look almost like new. This one might have cost you more than it was worth but just because you rose to the challenge makes it one of your best. WELL DO!!!
I don’t know how, but it actually looks proud.
You brought it back from the dead :)
It was fun to watch, especially since i had one of those, painted darkblue, when i was a kid...i guess around 50 years ago, maybe. My american aunt gave it to me, for a birthday i guess. Was a rare find in Germany . thx for sharing the restoration!

These toys are why we all had to have tetanus shots while growing up in the 70's.
Mark K Lol, I carried that trait on, 2007, but I collect toys and other memories from the 1990s to the 1900s.
I have some very nice tonkas. Very used though 😂 I think they’ve had about 5 owners.
Amazing job.....I didn't think it was salvageable, but you did it!

You are truly a miracle worker!
How does static spray powder stick to filler?
best restoration on this channel. thats the equal to a buzzer beater at a basketball game. close to being gone and comes back for the big save. outstanding work outstanding.
Could you add a warning re: strobe flash when you weld? It may trigger adverse reaction in some people.
No.
When toys were meant to last throughout childhood, now kids these days don't want indestructible toys they want throwaway iPhones, then we wonder why kids have no sense of imagination. Nice restore.
When I was a kid I’d take my toys I didn’t use much and repaint them and love them all over.
@@lias5188 A common theme for older generations and I'm sure today you still take care of your stuff, seems items today are being sold as a limited time consumable, and taking care of things is no longer a value.
That one damn near gave You Carpel Tunnel from all that sanding Tim. Looks great though!! Did You tell Duke.."I'm gonna have to let You go...it's just not working out"...poor Duke. He'll find work driving an Tonka Uber somewhere...He'll be aight.
The bed is in backwards. 😁
I had 2 of these as a kid. Great job restoring that poor thing. I bet it didn't look that good when it was new!
had one as a kid , it shoulda been Metallic mint pea green.
That's what I was thinking. Why did he change the colour and changed the wheel colour.
😳 Holy Smoke!!! Fantastic restoration sir!!!
As cute as Duke was, I think most of us prefer your vids like this.
😂😂 E' PARTICOLARISSIMA
I had the other version of that truck that came with a horse trailer. Got it for Christmas in the 70s. Kept it at my grandma's house along with some other toys I wanted to pass to my kids one day. After She died in 2014, one of my uncles took everything of value while everyone was at the hospital with her, including all the toys we had in the toy chest in the spare room :/ The police refused to arreast him because he lived there and they said the toys he took was his and we couldn't prove otherwise. And we had no proof he stole anything
WOW what a transformation! Nice.. They have a spray-able polyester filler that might have helped and you would have had to use regular paint.... but great job.
Your restoration of rusted metal Tonka Toys is surely second to none!
A lot of the comments about this truck were
Where did you find it?
My question is
Why can't today's auto makers make vehicles that last this long
Dear sir really very interested work especially when you repaint the parts. I want to ask about the cost of all the restoration process because you buy many parts from eBay as you mentioned in the video
Ha! NICE choice on the gloves. I have the exact same pair! I mainly use mine at my gun range! The gun range just outside any door of my home! I like restoring antique weapons in my retirement years. Always in my workshop out on our ranch in Texas... At one time back in the early 70's I had a fleet of Tonka Trucks. I never did get the backhoe and I really wanted that thing! Maybe I'll find one someday. I grew up VERY poor. When I was in my 30's I started collecting all the toys I wanted but never got as a kid. One day I'll have some very lucky grandchildren!!! Stomper 4x4. Miles of HO slot car track & dozens of cars. High end 4x4 remote control trucks & super fast cars.
Guns & knives.
Clocks & watches.... Tonka heaven too! I'm a 53 year old kid & I'm NEVER growing up!
Great Work. #STAYSAFE
Was it really missing half it is parts? Are you sure it wasn't missing half it is part is? Was there major pittng?
Just playing with you. Great job on the restoration!
Why didn't you use a skim coat of body filler? When I saw you applying the Powder Coat to that rough surface, without applying body filler or a primer base coat... I was confused (Former Autobody Man and Painter). Body Filler would have leveled out the imperfections and a self leveling primer would have finished it, saved you money on powder coat and given you a much smoother finish. Granted, I wouldn't have taken the time on this one and you did improve it 100% (Kudo's for that!) however, if I'm going to spend that much time, money and effort to restore a toy... I want it as close to perfect as possible and will spend the extra time to ensure it. Just my 2¢
TRG “Some major pitting and materiel lost to fix”.
ME. “ Ya think!”
Been watching your videos for a while, this was the first one I questioned whether it would survive the sandblaster. It did and you did some wonderful work restoring it.
that has to be one of the most amazing transforms i've seen.
I had this very truck, ca. 1976. It was metallic brown in colour, and it came with a horse trailer (and two plastic horses). The bed of the truck was black. It was one of my favourite toys! I dimly recall seeing the same model in purple/fuscha, but not lime green.
So satisfying it sent tears down my face at the end. Thank you for saving these treasures!!!
I really wasn't sure about this one. But I should have known you could do it. ☺ Great job. This one had the least amount of parts I have seen to date though. Take care, stay safe and Merry Christmas. 🌲♥🎅♥😊♥😺
Truly resurrected it from the dead
I got one for Christmas one year, I would spend a lot of time flipping that sign pissing my mom off with the clacking noise.
I'm glad you persisted. The reward is a great looking Tonka vehicle. Well done. There's a guy down-under who uses brake fluid to polish his Matchbox plastic windscreens. Seems to work for him. Cheers.
Impressive! Surprised how much you were able to bring back. If you haven't already, maybe you'll have to try one sometime, where you lean into the rusty aspect. Go for a post-apocalyptic Mad Max look.
Maybe it’s a Guy-Thing, But I find it very satisfying to take just about any old rusted toy or tool, and making it “Like-New” again. Job Well Done, My Friend!
My only complaints are the white plastic bed looks like it's backwards, and I could swear I see traces of green paint on the before shots. Still, an amazing outcome! I never would have thought such a deteriorated toy could be so well restored! Wanna fix my real truck's rust? LOL
Good work most would walk away. A lot of rubbin down. They say the finish is in the prep...
The most challenging one are often the most fun and rewarding!
I was concerned at first at the chassis of the truck, then I noticed it wasn't your paint job but the bare metal finish not polish sanded smooth. But recovered that extremely well. It looks brand 🆕. Great job. 👋👋👋👋🙂
My brother had several Tonka toys as a boy , they were pretty much indestructible 👍🏻 and now even to be brought back from the Tonka graveyard 👍🏻 Amazing , enjoyed the video xx
Very nice resurrection of a rusty hulk of metal. If you haven’t tried EW’s primers yet, I’d suggest giving them a try. I had some heavily pitted angle iron I used on a project and must say it really filled in the pits nicely...Plus, it’s cheaper than the color coatings, and sands very nicely. 👍
Wait. What happened to Duke, the official spokesman of TRG Restoration? I hope he didn't get himself in trouble. That was one good-looking inanimate object!
Nokia: I'm virtually indestructible
Gopro: I bathe in liquid fire
Gamboy: I survived a bomb
Tonka: *Laughs maniacally*
Astounding job. I love it
Ok my public comment is-Fantastic job! I'm really impressed not by how well it turned out but the fact you started with such a rusted hulk of trash! You accepted the challenge and knocked it out of the park. No easy task.
My good sir. You are part scientist, part body man, part archaeologist, and partI can do this. I would have cleaned the parts and set them aside just in case another one came in. But you gave this old girl new life. A job well done. It shows that you are truly a master at what you do. A believer I am TRG.
This was awesome bro
