Next time, use high build spray primer and block sand between each coat until rust pits are filled in. Also need finer masking tape so the paint lines are cleaner.
Even better have someone print up some new decals. We used to have guys make them up and print them off when I was into bmx bike restoration, it's not hard to find someone to do it. It's was a good effort but it could have been so much better with just a little more effort
We used to have one of this back when we we're young. Our grandma gave it to us from the States 🇺🇲. This toy is virtually indestructible, built tough as a rock. Unfortunately our father gave it away 😢😢😢😢
Back in the late 70s I had the exact same Tonka Van. I loved it. It carried everything I could fit into it. Many happy hours with action figures riding around in it, mainly Star Wars figures. Sadly, it disappeared during some house renovations, never to be seen again. 😢
I collect Buddy L, Hubley and Tonka from the 60’s and 70’s. While I prefer the patina, I’ve always wanted to try restoration. Thank you for sharing your video. You really put a lot of effort into this
I'm also searching for a tungsten steel made toy camper. It fits the Hasbro Jem dolls size. This includes a toy city bus. This includes toy flying saucer jets made out of tungsten steel. 🪆
Well done❤ Was the Van missing the Top Hatch from the beginning? A nagging question of course. But superb restoration equal to Chip Channel & Chip Fooze of Overhaulin'❤

If the powder coating doesn’t look like crap. It would have looked better if he just painted it, wouldn’t last as long, but would have looked much better.
@@ReedThomas71 it’s just still an unexpected surprise, and yes, a whole other kind of skill when doing multiple colors! I enjoy disassembly, I still cheer at sandblasting, the finish-prep and details are where I make a Lot of judgments on quality, but whenever I see powdercoating, I sit-up, pay closer attention, and hit that button! It’s just such an excellent way to preserve the job for years to come! 🤓
@@jclark2752 that is all and good and I will agree that powder coating is hard to beat. The guy just done such a poor job on the finish of the powder coat and paint. The paint was not smooth and real blotchy in places. He would have been better off to wet sand it with 600 grit sand paper and respray it. The paint and powder coat on the van was atrocious.
@@ReedThomas71 oh yes! Wet sanding is Key! I’ve seen some gorgeous work… But I’m willing to see how things improve… I’ve been known to hit the “unsubscribe” just as readily when the time comes! Keep trying though! I’ll be watching!
I also haven't told you that the Chip channel series isn't the Paul Restorer episodes. These new educational videos appear quite frequently on the Playlist. You just haven't seen any of Paul Restorer's finished work yet.
That Silen Hill van had a lot of tetanus all over it 😮😮. Just a joke 🤪🤣, a bad one you would say. It's so nice that rusted van got another chance 😊 and it's so nice to watch these kind of restoration videos, it's kinda relaxing.
You need to Resand the body back and feel over rust dents Because that paint looks Atrocious you can do a better job than that you did a fantastic job on the rest of the Van
You have a lot of pitting showing through the powder coating. Might I suggest doubling up on your body filler, as well as your primer coat. Also wet sanding has a much better result. Otherwise it looks great.
I never like criticising other people’s work but sadly I have to say the paint job was bad, there was still a lot of rust pitting visible and you didn’t restore to Tonja factory state like he does on Chip Channel
No one does a better job than Chip, his vehicles are perfection and this guy is trying to impersonate him, even down to the beginning of the sandblasting scene
Man, you are desperate about subscribing . I have counted 7 times Also, that "perfection" from the title is misleading. There are quite afew places where things need to improve

"To Perfection"? Really? possibly some of the worst prep and paint work I have seen on a restoration channel. This restoration was passable at best. Lots of deep scratches, some caused by the way you removed the decal, and if you are working with metal why not use automotive body putty? It is easy to apply and far easier to sand than JB weld and leaves a much better finished surface for paint. I know you can't powder coat over it but you have an airbrush, why not do better prep and use the airbrush for a nice paint finish? I also noticed that you did no restoration to the grill, plastic is very easy to sand why skip that step? I would give this restoration a C+
I came to say the exact thing. The amount of orange peel all over the van was horrid. At least wet sand it to smooth it all out. The stripe was disgusting! I would have sourced reproduced decals which would have looked a million times better.
Trying to copy Chip channel restoring Tonka vehicles and even trying to impersonate him on beginning of sandblasting, but nowhere near the quality of Chips finished vehicles
I'm not convinced that Kong is not Chip using different tools and techniques. Kind of a low budget version for beginners. Hands look the same and there are other similarities
I have seen worse restorations for sure, but this isn’t a great or even a good restoration. The paint is horrible, the yellow stipe looks like crap. taping it off didn’t work like you expected it to did it? The Tonka signs are not in the right font and not even in the right position in regards to where they were. No, you had to go and put a dumb ass logo on there that looks tacky as hell. The only thing I did like that you done different was spray paint the rims and the grill of the van silver. I would have liked to seen more of a chrome color than just silver though. Like I said, I have seen worse restorations believe it or not. Good effort though, I don’t know if this is your first try at restoring or not, but you have a long way to go.
Also a lot of dust and particle contamination landed on the paint. The iconic moon windows are gone 🥲. Some little convex lenses would have been a really nice touch.

It's still inside the wall... probably you found a nice little parking garage between the studs when the drywall was tore down and it got closed in

Wonder how many Star Wars and GIJoe’s figures hitch rides in that vans history. 😊

Very nice! Nice finishes & good color choice, well done!
Thank you John. I'm glad you like it.
Awesome restoration

Tonka projects are the best 👍
Thank you @Cool Restoration. I've just done 4 tonkas, so i still got many mistakes.
Well done❤ Was the Van missing the Top Hatch from the beginning? A nagging question of course. But superb restoration equal to Chip Channel & Chip Fooze of Overhaulin'❤
Nice! But should have given it the A-Team van paint job! Although it looks more like a Ford than GMC/CHEVY.
Very good attempt to restore 🎉
Thank you very much. I need to learn more.
Not the best restoration but, still cool..👍
Nice job 👍
nice job ,but i noticed you did'nt put the bubble windows on the yellow ,in order to restore means all details exactly as they were!!!
Nice catch :)
you always do better in your way @Kong Restoration
Thank you @rumano
Tonka were the best toys ever built. They were indescribable
Red rims and stripe and you'd have the A-TEAM van
Goog job
Thank you very much

You can use car polish for the windshield, like turtle wax
Thank you for your suggest :)
This reminds me of the a team van I had when I was a kid.
It should be a beautiful childhood memory :)
good job

Your work is very good but you made me jump when you used the polisher just with that noise
very nice.noticed how you removed the old decals.use a heat gun on them, they will peel right off

Looks great, but i wanted to see how you did the back moon windows.
It looks like filling and sanding had to be repeated since I can spot a lot of pits on the van. But nice result anyway 👍
Everything you did to this van is awesome
Thank you John. I'm glad you like it.

Very well done, do you have a link to get a riveter like the one you used on this video?
I bought it from ebay. You can search Pintonka Semi Tubular Rivet Tool
Peroxide or 40 volume hair developer with a UV light or sunlight will restore yellowed clear and white plastics
Thank you very much. It's a pretty cool tip.
could you back off the music a bit?

I see that you use epoxy to fill the body with, does Bondo not work with the process?
Thank you for watching. Bondo will dry fast before i done filling. Also jbwell will be more stronger.
