I can't understand... I've already seen "best songs" lists with "Bohemian Rapsody" or "Stairway to heaven" or other fairy tales songs topping the list. But what about this one? Fantastic melody, wonderful intro and bridge and solos... lyrics written to make you wonder about the future, the real life, time wasting,... a warning for young people, a lament for old people if they wasted their precious time... ... the real best song of last decades.

    • @Ducatista999
      @Ducatista999 4 года назад +24

John Dickinson both songs you have written down have had a special meaning for many people. This of course does not take away from this song. It just means that for one reason or another they have withstood the test of time a little better. I love all classic rock and there is no doubt this song belongs somewhere near the top of all charts. But this is what makes classic rock so wonderful, there is so much to choose from, not like nowadays, when it’s hard to distinguish any of it. Sad really; just be glad you are one of the lucky ones to have discovered this era of music.

"I spent an awful lot of my life - until I was about twenty-eight - waiting for my life to start. I though that at some point I would turn from a chrysalis into a butterfly, that my real life would begin. So if I had that bit of my life to live again, I would rather live the years between eighteen and twenty-eight knowing that that was it, that nothing was suddenly going to happen - that it was happening all the time. Time passes, and you are what you are, you do what you do."

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say
    Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
    Far away, across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell

2022 here, I'm only 16. My father and I love Pink Floyd with full heart. David Gilmour really paints out life with the lyrics, he also got a nice relaxing voice to go with it. I feel that Pink Floyd music is too smart for the world, that is possibly why most people on earth don't like it, because they don't understand life as much as us. Todays music is very rubbish, Because the artist don't write the lyrics themselves, which means they can never sing from their soul.

@@schrodinger_kot That's not entirely true, though he did write most of their 70s lyrics and he was at least a co-writer of the music on most of their 70s songs. Roger wrote the lyrics to Time, but the music was very much a collaboration among the 4 members of the band. This was the last album on which they all shared equally in the creativity, and the last album they all actually enjoyed recording together, before their egos became unmanageable.

This song is an absolute masterpiece; when I was a kid, I fell in love with this song immediately. The album was mind blowing, and Time was the pinnacle of it. Over the years, I've heard so many great songs, with superb guitar solos, but Time has remained ground zero for me. When I die, I want to be buried with a copy of Dark Side of the Moon, and the song Time to be the last thing played before I'm lowered in the ground (which hopefully won't be for a long time...)

The meaning can be deceptive to some. "Tired of lying in the sunshine/staying home to watch the rain" is relative. It can either be wasting your life, or it can be taking control of it. If you aren't doing something purposeful, then it can be wasting time. But if you are a person in charge of yourself, and are making the most of life, then "staying home to watch the rain" can be part of the incredibleness of taking charge. Watching the rain becomes purposeful and enjoyable from a different perspective. You are already participating in life to its fullest. And now watching the rain all day is part of that.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

The summers and the weekends seemed endless...and this whole thing really seemed as if it would last forever.Where have these times gone? Why has everything changed so fast? And most of all, why is everyone expecting me to act like a grown-up, like a completely different person when I still feel as little kid?

I am from Dallas, I got to see the Dark Side of the Moon tour, the Animals tour, and myself and 3 long lost friends scraped together enough to fly to see The Wall out in California... I saw the old guys trying to make a come back a few years ago, I won't say anything bad about the remaining band members. There were only 2 bands that rate as high as what I consider the greatest of my time. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. To me they really were something to behold . They brought music and life and magic and dreams and hope and happiness to millions of people searching for something to believe in. Here are a couple of facts you can bet your life on about Pink Floyd... First, they have the very best song, if you are ever cornered and have no choice but to participate in the torture they call karaoke.... Say Hell yeah, I choose the song by Pink Floyd called..."ONE OF THESE DAYS"... "I WILL CUT YOU INTO LITTLE PIECES"....It is the perfect song for the crowd and anyone who sings along... And... if you ever take a trip and some of you know where... the journey to break on through to the other side... Listen to all of any of the Pink Floyd albums, and they will guide you to the dark side and back to the light without any ill effects .... Peace my friends , the future is not going to be as good as the past.

This is my all time favorite song... That guitar solo kills me every time... Drunk, high, sober... It's amazing... Ughhhhh

I am listening to this for the first time at 17. I hope to update this comment for the next decade every year as I get older -2024

When I first heard this album on its release at the age of twenty I knew that it would become a favourite of mine, I can recall the hairs on my arms standing up.
44 years on and this not only remains my favourite album of all time but realise I was witness to one of the best things created musically from Great Britain.
