I played this for my dad as he was passing away. It was just him and i in the hospital room and he was at that stage where there were no more words that could be spoken. All i could think to do is play some of his favorite albums for him, with him, one last time while i held his hand. I miss that man so much. This album will always remind me of him.

Oh my goodness, God bless you!! I played Dark Side for my husband as he was passing away in February this year. He was only 38. We ended with "Wish You Were Here" on that album; I could not have planned it any better if I had tried 😢 May your dear old dad rest in peace!! You're a good kid, Jon ❤

At last an official version on RUclips with no interruptions between songs, this is the proper way to listen to this masterpiece.
Edit: Reading some of the comments saying that listening to it on youtube is not the proper way, I want to clarify that I have it on vinyl and I have a great turntable and audio equipment. For me that's the best way to listen to it... but what I meant is that it should be listened to without interruptions.

I was 11 years old when this album came out and my older sister was 14 (RIP). She always had the cool albums and she had this album first. I remember going to Sears store in 1977 and picking up this album for myself after hearing it. From what I can remember, it never left my turntable. I played it and played it. It was life-changing for me. All these years later at 61 years old with terminal cancer I still listen to this album all the time and all of Pink Floyd’s collection. It’s been my favorite band forever.

In 1973, my neighbor came running across the street and started beating on my window, he said you have got to come hear this...he had an incredible sound system in his room, we darkened the room, one of the greatest and timeless musical experiences I've ever had...this album defies to be tied to any musical decade..

    • @ikigai47
      @ikigai47 Год назад +72

That's hilarious. I totally get what you're saying. You're saying this album is the epitome of timeless, and I 100% agree. But at the same time it's easy for me to tie this to a decade. Early 1970s at its finest. It just happens to also be the greatest album of all time. This album is the biggest reason why, for me the greatest era of music was the 60s/70s even though it's slightly before my time and I didn't get to experience the vibe first hand, in real time like you did. The 80s were the most eclectic across the board (from Slayer to Duran Duran), creative and experimental with new music tech, the 90s were an amazing back to basics, less flash more substance time, and then we started falling off with the advent of the internet. Enter the "music should be free" crowd killing the dreams and incentive of countless, actually talented musicians, and replace them with soul-less mouse and keyboard warriors ready to click their way into being a talent, no talent required. Can't sing? NO PROBLEM! Auto-tune. Can't play an instrument? NO PROBLEM! Hit ctrl+I for instrument, then clicky click you're Beethoven! 😂

This album was released on this day, March 1, 1973 … 51 years ago. I was 18 and about to graduate high school in Iowa. It was life altering, especially the song ‘Time’ … the lyrics,
“And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
    You missed the starting gun”
This became like a mantra to me. It got me out of the place I was and to what I have become - a better man.
Music is a huge part of my life, and this remains one of my top 3 albums.

This album came out during my first year in college. The effects of the Vietnam War were everywhere. I fell into the drug scene and dropped out of college disillusioned. Three years later, I met the girl who would save my life. We will celebrate our 47th anniversary in a few days. This music brings tears to my eyes as it transports me back to a time when my world turned upside down.

My dad’s favorite band was Pink Floyd. He passed away about 3 weeks ago. I grew up with the best taste in music thanks to my Daddio. His favorite song was Comfortably Numb, but his favorite lyric was from Time and it says “And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again.” When I turned my dad’s car on for the first time after he passed… guess what the first words I heard out of the speaker were? Exactly those lyrics!! My dad has been sending me so many signs since his passing and most of them involve Pink Floyd. I know he’s rockin’ out in heaven right now. Until I meet you there, Daddio. I just know he would of loved the competition and seeing new life breathe into something he loved VERY deeply. Anytime that man was jamming out it was for sure pink floyd all the way. Thank you for all you do as i sit here and remember the beautiful man that was my Grandpa. Shine on you crazy diamond you... i will forever miss you grandpa. I love you.

I was just a kid, in Florence, Italy, the first time I listened to the Pink Floyd. My neighbor was passionate about music and introduced me and my brother to them. He showed us a music magazine in which a critic wrote that Pink Floyd are as important as Mozart or Beethoven. The world will still listen to their music even in 3 or 4 centuries from now. He was so right!

While playing in my bedroom, I remember having heard this album dozens of times, not to say hundreds or a thousand. I remember how life was so nice. To grow up in theses conditions was great!
Now I'm 43 and these souvenirs of mine almost appear as if it was another person. Lost my Dad in 2021, I miss him so much. I miss this sweet time of childhood when he was playing Pink Floyd in our house, putting the volume.... HIGH ! I have a DSOTM cycling jersey, and, without fail, at least 1 or 2 people point to it or say something about the album whenever I cycle wearing it. What I find really amazing (and, at first, surprising) is that many of them are in their 20s, from all corners of the world (including 5 guys from Uruguay that approached me in 2018, in Niagara Falls) and they're all totally enraptured devotees of the album. DSOTM is a incredible artistic accomplishment -- truly wonderful, innovative music (Gilmour's and Wright's superb, emotive playing, and Clare Torry's tremendous, heartfelt vocals on Great Gig In The Sky) coupled with Waters's timeless, relevant, profound, philosophical lyrics about fear, life, death, greed, war, injustice, insanity, etc.. And, Hipgnosis's album cover art (light thru a prism on a black background) is truly iconic and identifies the album without words. It's no wonder that DSOTM has been on Billboard's top albums list for 18 years (14 years consecutively) and is treasured by people all over the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Pink Floyd!

This album has come a long way with me. It played on loop for me all through high school. It was the first music I played for my first son when he was first born. It was the soundtrack to the acid trip that lead to me getting into my most lucrative career path, and then the soundtrack to the trip that showed me I had to leave that company and change fields entirely. I was listening to this today while watching my youngest son playing in the yard, exploring the flowers in the grass. This is what living sounds and feels like. Not existing, living a life full of journeys, and wonderful things, and turmoil, and love, and all of the emotions that make life worth seeing out. It reminds me about all of the things in the world that truly matter and allows me to simply ignore everything that doesn't. Heavy.

Clare Torry's performance will always be the best in rock History, so extremely expressive and the best of this album. She nailed it forever.

Clare sued EMI and PF for songwriting credit and the case was settled out of court in 2004. Since then she has received (rightfully so, IMHO) a songwriting credit as co-writer with Rick Wright.

I was in high school when this album came out. There is no band that holds a key to pink Floyd! Their music will live forever. How blessed was I to listen to pink Floyd. I feel sorry for those that have never heard them. My 3 grown sons love pink Floyd!!!❤

I'll be 50 in June so I've never known a world without these songs and yet listening beginning to end, the last 90 seconds of Eclipse gave me straight cold chills top to bottom. This is as high as high art can get. To remain evocative after the most media-stimulated 50 years on this planet is a true testament to a perfect band.
RIP Richard Wright, you were a master.
