@@kdanielpeters59 Alive, indeed he was. But his mental state was not what one would term "normal", due to his drug abuse (LSD or similar) . I guess his bandmates already considered him "lost" from this world. A tragedy. Syd was one of the creative powers behind Pink Floyd from the outset.
CADA VEZ QUE ESCUCHO ESTA CANCION SE ME SALEN LAS LAGRIMAS, LA ALEGRIA ME INVADE Y ES COMO SI VIAJARA A OTRA DIMENSION , GRACIAS PINK FLOYD POR ESTAR EN NUESTRA ERA
I was 13 when this came out and it was the first time I took acid listening to this album, i loved it of course, I overindulged myself for the next decade or so, being young with no adult problems and pressures my mind could wander truly free, beast times of my life.
we 60-somethings were so lucky to live in this time. We had Floyd and ELP doing their stuff, cracking bands like the Eagles. Mike Oldfield turned up. Queen were getting big. Pop was decent with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the rest. Abba were big for the smarter disco people, Carole King for late night snuggles, and a couple of weird sods who made it even more fun (Sparks)
I'd say it's one of perhaps TEN songs that are defined by that statement. And...4 of those are other Floyd songs...as well. So glad that I'm old enough to have gotten to see them in their heyday...lots of times, at that.
I love the way this takes you down the path you walk , you'll end up in dimensions related to being one big spiritual man and see imagry related to the depth of their songs and love.
The best frigging pink floyd song ever.especially when he can keep you hanging for seven plus minutes .for his first words to be spoken .master mind .genius .love his music but i praise my God more than this music.
First in 1976 (when I was 15) I heard a few sequences from 'Shine on...' as background music in various television films without knowing who the piece was by. At some point I heard 'Have a cigar' on the radio. And the moderator mentioned the band name! Then immediately went to the record store, bought the record, put it on and from then on the world looked different...
This entire composition lasts 25:30 minutes, but roughly only 3:30 minutes contain the lyrics/vocals. The rest is pure musical poetry. Probably my favorite PF track of all-time. Every section, even the "jam" oriented ones, have clear memorable melodic content. Every solo can be sung. No wasted notes or noodling. Beautifully composed from beginning to end.

At the very end as it fades out (25.15) Richard Wright plays the Melody to See Emily Play which Syd would have sung "Emily tries but misunderstands." -Just something else for more poignancy.
The first time I heard this song I could not sleep so I got into my 1984 Toyota Supra and drove way too fast through Valrico and Plant City, Florida. Hopping railroad tracks and other stupid things but then 98 Rock played this at 3AM. I slowed down so I could hear the lyrics better. I remembered Mark Laidlaw a "Crazy Diamond" who died dodging semi-trucks in the middle of Highway 60. I felt at peace went home and fell sound asleep. I use Pink Floyd as a therapeutic.

Shine on, you crazy diamond
[Verse 2: Roger Waters]
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
[Refrain: Roger Waters & David Gilmour]
Shine on, you crazy diamond
[Chorus 1: Roger Waters]
You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on, you target for faraway laughter
Come on, you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine
[Verse 3: Roger Waters]
You reached for the secret too soon
You cried for the Moon
[Refrain: Roger Waters & David Gilmour]
Shine on, you crazy diamond
[Verse 4: Roger Waters]
Threatenеd by shadows at night
And exposed in the light
[Refrain: Roger Waters & David Gilmour]
Shinе on (Shine on), you crazy diamond (You crazy diamond)
[Chorus 2: Roger Waters]
Well, you wore out your welcome with random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on, you raver, you seer of visions
Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine
[Part V. (11:08-13:18)]
(Instrumental)
[Part VI. (13:18 - 18:01)]
(Instrumental)
[Part VII. 18:01 - 19:30)]
[Verse 5: Roger Waters]
Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
[Refrain: Roger Waters & David Gilmour]
Shine on you crazy diamond
[Verse 6: Roger Waters]
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there
[Refrain: Roger Waters & David Gilmour]
Shine on you crazy diamond
[Chorus 3: Roger Waters]
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph
And sail on the steel breeze
Come on, you boy child, you winner and loser
Come on, you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!
[Part VIII. (19:30 - 22:00)]
(Instrumental)
[Part IX. (22:00 - 25:30)]
(Instrumental)
Thousands of times listening.still the best.
Simply the greatest band ever
I think all the sons who shared this music with their dads come here eventually :) "Remember when you were young...?"❤💔
Perhaps the greatest composition ever composed.
Possibly the most epic thing they ever recorded, which is definitely saying something. Incredible tribute to their lost friend and bandmate...
syd was actually very much alive when this song was recorded. he even popped in during the recording session.
Soars high and close to the pinnacle of the epic ^^

CADA VEZ QUE ESCUCHO ESTA CANCION SE ME SALEN LAS LAGRIMAS, LA ALEGRIA ME INVADE Y ES COMO SI VIAJARA A OTRA DIMENSION , GRACIAS PINK FLOYD POR ESTAR EN NUESTRA ERA
I was 13 when this came out and it was the first time I took acid listening to this album, i loved it of course, I overindulged myself for the next decade or so, being young with no adult problems and pressures my mind could wander truly free, beast times of my life.
CHEERS ! ❤
we 60-somethings were so lucky to live in this time. We had Floyd and ELP doing their stuff, cracking bands like the Eagles. Mike Oldfield turned up. Queen were getting big. Pop was decent with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the rest. Abba were big for the smarter disco people, Carole King for late night snuggles, and a couple of weird sods who made it even more fun (Sparks)
love sparks they need more love
New Classic, Pink Floyd💖💥
man, the soundtrack to my young day's as my father had a big taste for amazing music and good LSD. 😀
Mines too, can never get enough good tunes or good Lucy's 👍
What to say after so many years, so deep and again ,a masterpeace
Yep. Ad inserted at about 3:55.
(You all know EXACTLY what it was spoiling.)
The most perfect song in the history of the world.
I can feel the song with all my body
In memory of Syd Barret, the man who lost his consciousness in the nirvana of LSD intoxication.
Only Pink Floyd can go 8 minutes without saying a single word.
Opeth too
Maggot brain has like 3 lines and it's 10 min long...
You should hear 11 minutes instrumental song of Dream Theater, Stream Of Consciousness 😅
Never stop playing this masterpiece ♥️🇧🇴💚
Fantastic piece of music
Having known these guys for all my life, all i can say is good on ya! Shine On Sir. Madness is beauty. SB
That's crazy!!! A teenager with common sense, intelligence, and taste for legendary transcendent rock n roll!?!? Impossible! Cool kid, keep it up! Sean Black

The Rock Requiem of all times for Somebody as Syd, AMEN.
Just fill your bong, light up and savor this long great trip. Stoner Heaven!
I remember the first time I watched this music video. Me and my high school buddy at the time in his garage, super high just staring at the TV without saying anything the whole way through. Key memory
this piece is truly beautiful
The opening to this track is one of the ealiest memories i have of life
Masterchief of musical history for entire but from the 13th minute i think that It begins the most powerful musical trip of ever♥️
At the very end as it fades out (25.15) Richard Wright plays the Melody to See Emily Play which Syd would have sung "Emily tries but misunderstands."
-Just something else for more poignancy.
Never heard that before 👍 well obviously I heard it but never put the lyrics of that song to this tune, nice one 👊
That little easter egg Richard added at the end is the reason why I nickname "See Emily Play" as "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part X)".
I use Pink Floyd as a therapeutic.
this is a listening experience . mind blowing magic . thank you so much for being ordinary men .
Wish you were here is played so much by itself. When you listen to this album fully, you feel like youve almost earned wish you were here. By itself its great but in context it makes an epic end of a story.
Dropping and listening was key
The timing
I hear this song when there is nothing but silence. It haunts me in the strangest way. I'm not complaining.
