NGK Iridium IX - DCPR8EIX plugs, there is only one electrode strap and the center electrode is Iridium and much finer than the NGK plugs you recommend. Supposedly higher performance? I am very new to BMW, recently purchased a high mileage police bike, '07 R1200RT-P. Quite the learning experience thus far! Thanks TOM, someday hope to take a ride through all the Netherlands, having grown up listening to my Grandmother Houghtaling's stories.
Hello Old Mechanic. Excellent video! Thanks for posting. I’m curious about the ratchet you use. At 4min, it looks like you can twist the handle to continue turning the bolt.
Ciao, just done my left plugs following your - great - vid. Hard to "slide" the plastic cover, though 😅. I was wondering what are tightening torque to put the engine guard bolts back in place
I would not mess with the feeler gage and the electrodes as they have pointed ends. inserting a blade can do more harm than good. The plug comes with the right gap so one can just use it as is.
Hello my friend. Im looking at your videos but can't find one about valve checking and adjustment. Im planning to do the valve work to my Triumph Tiger Sport 1050 but need your craftmanship experiences ! You are a great mechanic and your videos are awesome. I hope that you can post a video of that ,( shims under buckets valve manteinance) Greetings from Mexico !
Hi there, I was wondering if you made a mistake at 7.14? I thought it was a 16 mm socket that was required for oil cooled 1200 GS. Great channel, I’ve subscribed . Thanks for a reply if possible. 😉👍🏻
Hi again Old Mechanic, quick question, I recently remove my main plugs to check as it is running rough and found out there's a bit of oil on the tip of the plugs(the tip connected to the ignition coil not on the side doing the spark)..I wonder what does that tell.. So, I just clean the plugs with contact cleaner and a bit of very fine sandpaper. Now the bike is running good and smoother.. It works but should I be worried or check something else.. I would love to hear your thoughts and insight.. Thanks in advance and as usual awesome tutorial...
Hi Virdi, when you take off the valve cover you will see 2 rubber seals. The outer large one, and the rubber round seal for the sparkplug shaft, I think that, that one is leaking. Greets from The Old Mechanic.😉🏍
Hi Old Mechanic, thanks for your video. Do you not feel that putting assembly lube on the plug threads affects the torque achieved as specified torques usually assume dry threads?
I have been using a dab of copper grease on new spark plugs in the last 50 years and always tighten by hand. Never had a problem nor stripped threads. I suggest you do not tighten the plugs too much this is what people usually do
My opinion is that yes it does mess with Torquing going on. But the benefits of one Torquing in the first place is Good most people go by feel (Never Good) Secondly, like Old Mechanic said you never will have problems. I personally will do this from now on because It is methodical and is a good reminder to always use a Torque wrench. The little possibility of over torque using anti seize it outweighed by the benefits. My opinion only.
Hello old mechanic. You tighten the spark plugs to 12Nm, in the book I have from the BMW R1200GS it says that it is tightened to 25Nm. What do you think about this, I'm a little confused because I don't know what is right. My GS is a 2009. Otherwise, I like your videos.
Not ez cuz you gotta R&R that engine guard every 12,000. I say PITA. Resolution: get an Ilium engine guard. Although Ilium quality i'm disappointed with as mine has rusty pits all over it in only 24 months.
Hi Kevin you are so right, mine started to rust after about 2 to 3 years. I contacted Hepco & Becker about it and the only thing they could do was giving me a discount of 75 euro's on a new engine guard...
you make me laugh with the godverdorie, effe kijken and the other dutch words u use, I learned a lot from using the Haynes manual's. but youre video's are a little goldmine of information.
Very good work, careful and clean, I'm going to change my 2012 year with 52 thousand kms.
Greetz from The Old Mechanic, ride save 👨🔧--->🏍
Liked the " tee te reedee dee dee dee ..opa.. " part . 😀Thank you !
Af en toe een mooi Brabants vloekje ertussen ....geweldig. Da makte gij wel , hehehe

Impressive videos...new subscriber here. Really like that rachet you got there. Thanks for the tutorial. R1200GS owner here
Thanks and welcome 👍🏻👊🏻
Thank you for a great demonstration 👍
You are welcome!

Hi its a 14mm deep socket wrench to get these sparkplugs (BMW R1200GS - 2010) out. 😉
Great Video. Where do you recommend purchasing the spark plugs? I see prices from $57 ea to $15 ea
Do you recommend using dielectric grease on the top electrode of the plug? I’m asking regarding a 2010 R1200RT.
Nooo just on the thread 😉
Hi old mechanic, what's the and where did you get it from to remove the spark plug boot, regards Gary, great videos by the way
What is the special wrench used to remove the spark plug boot from hole on the head? Did you make or can you buy this?

Thanks Old Mechanic.. Make sense. I'll check that together when I do the valve adjustment.. I may have to replace them eventually..
@@ragnarrock8747 its better to replace both seals after each valve check
👍Yep atleast inspect then carefully for tiny cracks, and flexibilety. By doubt allways renew them. 😉🏍
You say that the sparkplugs need to be lubed with anti-seize but it makes the thread greasy and that will be of influence of the torque settings....?
Yep but thats just a bit 😉
So you torq the plugs a little too low.... or do you compensate and gues a few Nm extra..?
What is the SPECIAL tool to remove spark plug coil and where do you get it?

Your bike has different plugs, they are m12 and need to be at 23Nm. This one (DOHC) has m10 threaded spark plugs.
You have to remove part of the engine guard and some other parts just for putting out the plug. I think the manufacturer needs some contrivance here.
try to change the spark plugs on the four-cylinder engine like S1000XR
Oh by the way its a 2009 Gs1200 with 98000km!
Oil head has torque of spark plugs 23 Nm by manual. If not please repair me.
Nope the torque of the spark op plugs is 12 Nm 😉
@@TheOldMechanic but this is for new spark plugs. I have 2010 GSA and in manual is 20 - 23 Nm. What is correct?
Can you give me the last 7 digits of you vin number then I look it up in the BMW software whats the right torque for your bike
@@TheOldMechanic ZY07425
Your Adventure is build April 2010, sparkplugs are the NGK MAR8B-JDS and the torque is 12 Nm 😉
