Hey, James. You should do Clock Tower the next year with the upcoming remaster this month. It was an SNES game that didn't release outside of Japan back in the day but it's a classic that took inspiration of Phenomena (1985).
Funny thing about the game over screen is that it changes once you've died eight times. If she has fangs like she did on the screen you showed, you're too late to save her and you'll get the bad ending. Before that she'll look like she does on the option screen.
You know, if I were Dracula looking down from the castle, and I saw this guy barefist brawl a werewolf with a knife, I would probably decid it's easier to just find another woman.
Plot twist: Dracula never wanted the guy's girlfriend. After hundreds of years of immortality he just wanted to bare knuckle fight a worthy adversary to the death.
Simon Belmot: Yes, I'll need this sacred whip, holy water, knives, axes and this cross that flies like a boomerang. The guy in this game: Catch these hands, son!
Imagine you're Dracula. You kidnap a girl, take her back to your castle, and look out to see her boyfriend riding up to your gates completely unarmed. You pre-emptively celebrate while siccing your army of minions on the helpless fool. Then you witness him beat the tar out of all of them with his bare hands. Then when he gets to you, and the boss music starts, his HP bar is bigger. It is at that moment that you come to a realization: you are not the final boss. He is.
Now, to be totally fair: Seta didn't actually make Wizard of Oz, they only published it. That one was made by a dev called Manley and Associates. Nosferatu, however, was both developed and published by Seta themselves.
Can you imagine dracula’s minions coming to him to explain how a random dude came into their castle- no weapons, no backup- and just started handing out Ls left and right
I find it sad that the Nerd did not finished the game to see the ending, because: If you die too often, and according to him you WILL die too often, the girlfried on the picture in the game over screen will develop fangs, and then the game ends with the boyfriend comming too late, and the girlfriend is now a vampire. Spooky!
in defense of the game over screen, it has a sense of melancholy. the story is that the dude is going to rescue his girlfriend from dracu...nosferatu. but you died and she was never saved. so now all thats left of either of you is the last photo you took together. maybe it would've been more obvious if the photo was attached to a "missing" sign or something. but anyway, i actually really like it.
Actually the game over screen is scary for a different reason. Her Teeth are Hidious! If I had a girlfriend with a mouth like that, I don't think I would barefist my way through hordes of undead to save her.
One thing the developers really nailed down is the aesthetics, boss backgrounds specially look absolutely gorgeous. I really wanted to like this game but I went through the three phases over and over again until I gave up.
I kind of doubt it. One, their names(Kyle and Errin) are a lot more modern. And two, his clothes scream 1980's/90's. But you are right, it's to let you know you died too many times, so you get the bad ending.
*Oh man he's going to get the bad ending, he's going to get the bad ending, he's highlighting the photograph he's going to get the bad ending!* .......... you blue-balled me, nerd.
I think having a benign photograph as a game over or victory screen amps up the creep factor, House of the Dead has the same concept with photo of the research team you're supposed to rescue, and even that changes when you're getting the bad ending.

With the game over screen maybe it’s just the limited graphics, but it looks like the girlfriend has fangs. That's what actually happens in the bad ending, in the Japanese version. If you continue 8 times before beating the game, she gets turned, then bites you.
@@jonathanrobles7377 That's honestly a really cool feature! And knowing myself and a few other gamers, we'd be too stubborn to give up until we got both endings. It's not determination though, it'd be pure spite that fueled us.
Guy riding a horse in 1990 makes some sort of sense. Maybe castle is in a remote place where gas stations aren't common, and, although he is more than willing punching Nosferatu into ashes, he isn't willing pulling a car without fuel around.
There’s a thing called gas tanks. Dude could’ve just stockpiled some in preparation for this whole rescue, but maybe the road to drac’s castle is unpaved, uneven terrain, so perhaps a horse still makes some sense to a degree.

I really liked that film, and it's actually crazy how a film that old actually holds up a frigging one hundred years later!

She does if you Continue 8 times before you beat the game, at which point she's been turned. She bites you to turn you at the end if you keep going and finish the game without completely starting over (or presumably starting with the level select which I assume starts from 0 continues).
I can’t get the image out of my head of Dracula looking out over his castle grounds with a goblet of wine. I got to thinking primarily about Phantom Blood, because Jonathan mostly does unarmed combat (even if charging his strikes with hamon).
Joseph uses various weapons comparatively often in Battle Tendency, and in Stardust Crusaders almost everyone is using stands, which are sometimes basically weapons.
Nah, It's Jonathan vs DIO! Part 1. WRYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
8:40 "... then press down and Y." More like press down and WHY!!!!!
I love the silent movie card scene at the end, truly felt like watching Nosferatu
Nothing beats a new Nerd episode.
What about 2 new nerd episodes? 😮
@@jesickaaddams7199 Has such a fabled thing ever happened before!? 😉😉
except an old nerd episode
Except the dude from this game, he seemingly beats everything
I was still surprised tbh that he is still doing new ones
Now I'm imagining Nosferatu going up against the Hash Slinging Slasher.
I was having a really rough week of depression and this video made me laugh out loud. Thanks AVGN. The three phases were so funny
Sorry to hear that mate, I hope things improve and you have a great end to the year - and remember, be kind to yourself! 😊
@@TomNoles007 thanks Tom
@@TomNoles007just ask him out on a date already
Avgn for before bedtime. Legendary
Did this guy have NO friends? Even an acquaintence to say "Hey, at least take a stick or something with you" Nope, this dude just DECIDES to go "handle" Castlevania with just his "Dukes". Now THAT is SNES-foratu levels of BADASSERY!
I imagine someone did tell him about the wooden stake and his comeback was "What if I just rip his heart out with my bare hands?"
@@taragnor Close but I think THIS character would just punch the heart right out of him, lol.
his friend was probbaly jackyl who told him sticks are useless
You're the best. Thank you for making these.
earliest i've ever been to an avgn video
Same
Same man same
yeaa
Yep!
Grats bruv
5:45 "To just go up to that thing and punch it?"
"You must be the Belmont." (Castlevania Netflix)
I saw Nosferatu (the OG one, it's on RUclips!) like half a year ago. I usually don't have that much patience with movies and shows and stuff, and usually play video games while watching. Can't really do that with a silent film, tho', so Nosferatu shouldn't really be my thing.
But lol, it was amazing! I really liked that film, and it's actually crazy how a film that old actually holds up a frigging one hundred years later!
I remember playing Nosferatu on the SNES when I was a kid it's a very hard game to beat.
I never even heard of it
Confusion..... Chance... ..Fatigue......you just described my feelings trying to play Soulslike and Roguelite games.
In Soulslike games, you have the online option to ask for help. Difficulty radically drops when other people join and help you.
The silhouette of the Nerd on the wall made me laugh out loud. XD
It did???
@@michaeltansey4717 It's a reference to some iconic shots of the original movie. You can laugh at worse things.
[cracks a rolling rock]
1 million views by the end of the week. Keep crushing it James!
7:45 The girl in the photo has fangs in the game over screen. Sort of implying Dracula got to her like Mina in the book.
I've read she gets fangs if you die too many times, and this will also affect the ending.
That being said, Mina survived in the end. The same cannot be said about her friend Lucy Westenra, however.
18:00 female vampires don't have weakness
@ 16:00 The Nerd grunting to the music after so much frustration is so relatable! 😂😂
I' ve done that to many times playing sh*tty platformers and getting stuck on levels!😭
Yoooo this guy's still going after all these years???? What an absolute legend!
You realised this now? 🤨
I felt the same the way releasing the Nosferatu 2024 Movie on Christmas 🎄 ? What ? 2:15
Sometimes studios will release their big important movies at Christmas essentially to keep them fresh in the mind for award season.
The original Scream released on December 20th 1996
MERRY CHRISTMAS, HORROR FANS!!!!
Funny how Willem Dafoe played Nosferatu.
It's because girls will drag their dates out to these kind of movies.
Love ya James we ain’t letting them cancel you 💪
No mutant, no weapons, just bad assery.
And Wolf Man isn't coming out until January... is there some misguided belief people don't want to see horror movies in October?
Crazy you mention that I was just going to watch the 2012 version bc I never have
"That would have been too obvious because blaah blaah blaah smartypants reasoning"
Box office returns speak for themselves when it comes to horror movies released in October.
Great episode, Nerd! Loved it! But one thing...BRING BACK THE KYLE JUSTIN VERSION OF YOUR SONG!
7:55 Does she have fangs?
Yea that's what I thought too.
She does if you Continue 8 times before you beat the game, at which point she's been turned. She bites you to turn you at the end if you keep going and finish the game without completely starting over (or presumably starting with the level select which I assume starts from 0 continues).
Yes, she does.
@@UltimaKeyMaster. That is awesome!
@@MountainLWolfThis is very awesome indeed!
13:40 . . . What.
hot
I can’t get the image out of my head of Dracula looking out over his castle grounds with a goblet of wine.
Suddenly there’s this inhuman roar as John Wickham charges up the path spear tackles some poor zombie clean through the door sending splintered wood and metal everywhere.
Unrelated but this dude 9:14 looks like Dozer from Timesplitters 3
Thank you James for creating content. Been watching for 17 years! Seriously thank you for the laughs and happiness
Jesus lord, that game over screen is depressingly terrifying.
Go and get laid then
Very uncanny valley 😨
😰😰😰😰😰😰
Very Creepy as well
‘Funky music death montage’ brought joy to my heart.

Do you have references?
I love the when Nosferatu smiled in the end and then turned off the light, funny and hilarious classic moments ever with the slime in my face! 😊😂❤
Okay, I was wondering about the Christmas release date too! What an odd date to release a monster movie like Nosferatu!
Just to take a moment and say, so glad that you have been around for so long, and are still here, still producing for all of us
So close to Halloween i was getting worried there was no special 😅
Your B&W ending to this video is friggin' brilliant!
I absolutely freaking love AVGN and all of Cinemassacre. Been a fan for a while and I even went and got the AVGN game. Always immediately click when AVGN posts something new. I even go back and watch old stuff constantly. ❤❤❤
11:25 The same kind of thing happens in Zombies Ate My Neighbors, another horror themed SNES game but that game is actually amazing. However you can avoid the damage when you open things if you're careful about it, but in this game it looks like taking a hit is unavoidable.
Theres another Nosferatu game called Nosferatu Wrath of Malachi. It's one of the jankiest games you can get your hands on
And still, miles better than this piece of sheit.
Civvie11 did a great playthrough of it.
The Jank of two thousand and three years!
That part when you start chanting the music out of frustration LOL
I have been there so many times xD
I kinda wish there was a gag where Nosferatu (or someone else) was flickering the basement lights on and off.
The futon is back
I remember learning about this game in an AVGN video and now so many years later, here we are.
7:32 - Well... I suppose horses still exist in 1990!
He's wearing a hoodie!! 😂
I like that in both AVGN and James and Mike Mondays, they go from loving the game to hating it at the end. XD
16:00 instant classic nerd moment. Whenever James sings the game songs this way I lose it 😂
I heard of this from the Nintendo Power article on it, and nowhere else. Nobody else has ever spoken of this game to me, until AVGN suddenly dropped this vid
Nosferatu is my favorite silent film.
Watch The Passion of Joan of Arc and Haxen.
i see.
Mine is Metropolis
Anything from Chaplin for me. "The Kid", "Modern Times", "The Gold Rush", "City Lights"
..Murnau's Nosferatu is classic too, though.
