    Continental Airlines Flight 1713 was a commercial airline flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado to Boise Airport, Idaho on November 15th, 1987.

    I remember this one, I was a 10-year-old kid and we had just moved to Denver. We watched the live news coverage on TV. I had to ask my mom what "casualties" meant. "Dead," she cried in anguish, "it means they're dead!" Very clear and sad memory. May they rest in peace.

    I remember the accident. The tail with the logo standing upright in the field just past the end of the runway. We could watch planes land and take off from the road the passed perpendicular to the runways.
    For a long time there was nothing there and trees were planted to hide the field and cut down on wind crossing the runways.
    Fun fact. A man who owned a house just off those runways moved after the accident to Aurora CO to avoid having a plane land in his backyard because of this accident. Ten yes later to the day a private plane with dual engines crashed in his backyard. I remeber see the tail of that craft too. Indeed that is all you could see over the fence

      You’re talking about my father in law. It’s correct he did move but the plane didn’t crash near the house. Technically, you can say it was in his backyard because it was behind his house, but it was actually just on his property about a quarter mile back from the actual fenced in backyard(about 3/4 acre) and house. With the terrain, you actually could not see the debris from the back porch.
      Funny random fact that you know that though. Small world.

    The aftermath story is a good one. "Nine months after the crash of Flight 1713, Delta Air Lines Flight 1141 crashed in Dallas. When the NTSB released its report on Flight 1713, it specifically mentioned the fact that "almost 3 minutes of nonpertinent social conversation" had occurred before take-off.[1]:39 When the NTSB later issued its report on Delta 1141, it found that the Delta crew had also engaged in nonpertinent conversation, including a discussion of the cockpit voice recorder from the crash of Continental 1713.[10] The report on Delta 1141 concluded, amongst other causes, that the Dallas crash was caused by that crews’ nonpertinent conversation contributing to their failure to extend that aircraft's flaps and slats to proper take-off configuration"
    Bitter irony.
    The root cause was the crew being distracted. The other flight was also crew distraction - which was them talking about a crew being distracted.

      Good example. This is very pertinent. "To paraphrase Ecclesiastes, there is a time to speak and a time to be silent. Keep the cockpit sterile and your thoughts pure." Another words keep the focus in the cockpit on the tasks at hand, keep casual conversation to a bare minimum.

      How about Northwest flight 255 in Detroit. The crew did not observe the sterile cockpit rule and were in fact joking about the flight attendants. The captain made a comment that it will give their families something to talk about if they crash. They forgot to deploy the Takeoff flaps and all were killed except one little girl.

      I don't really think these crews want to be sloppy, some of the non-important banter in the cockpit is a form of stress relief which I understand, but it ends up being a serious distraction.

    I live in Denver. I remember this day. My sister was listening to the airport control tower radio that day and she heard the calls. A police officer that went to the scene and found the plane upside down was crying on the radio.

    I can't thank you enough for this.
    At the time, I was 22 years old, involved with Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue.
    One day, we got a call. There was a major incident at Stapleton and they needed us. Not to search. Not to rescue. But to provide assistance to those who were actually doing the work.
    I stood, yards away, making coffee and other hot drinks for the guys who came off of that plane.
    I still remember the looks on their faces.
    Years later, my brother (a flight attendant, of all things) teased me for being nervous during a flight. I tried to make him understand by saying, "You don't get it. The last time I was this close to an airplane, it was upside down in a snowstorm."
    These things stay with you. No matter how peripheral or inconsequential you are.

    Once had a flight out of NY that was delayed, de-iced, delayed, returned for more de-icing, and finally delayed for an estimated six hours. We hated it, of course, being kids.

      Laura - We were kept inside the terminal the whole time. Sorry I left that out! We caught some zzzz's after they told us it would be six hours. I believe we actually boarded after four hours when the weather cleared. All of us survived.

      The last time I took off in a snowstorm was at LGA in a 767. They kept closing the runway, letting the plows do their work, let up to 4 airplanes take off (none were landing) and repeat the procedure. After we were deiced at the gate, we pushed back, taxied to the runway and took off, all within 5 minutes.

      They were OK. We made sure they were on our flight, no running off, seat belts securely buckled, observed the lit no smoking sign, and the stews took good care of them, too. It was a bit tough for them, being bigger and all. Just joking. We were high school seniors, eight or ten of us, IIRC, all on the same flight for Christmas vacation. We had no way of contacting our parents overseas, but we did worry a bit about them having to wait at the destination airport, or gamble with going back home for a stretch, or wait, or go back, or wait ... etc.. They closed the airport bar in NY at 2am, but gifted us a few one-ouncers and left us a couple of half-gallons of 7-Up.) We knew of course that you don't take off into a snow storm, but it's after watching this video that I really appreciate that they de-iced twice, and ultimately the pilots had the good sense and integrity to lay down the law and make the decision to just say "No", and delayed (even as moaningly, tortuously, tyrannically, inconvenient as it was for high-schoolers eager to get home for Christmas). Would have been a bit worse if we'd crashed, I would imagine.

    Rear fuselage mounted jet engines don't like turbulent air coming off the wing and the fuselage. Too much of it and they may quit on you. Jet engines mounted on the wings with inlets ahead of the wing leading edge seem too handle more rapid increases in pitch angle than rear mounted engines do. You have to understand the aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft you are flying in order to fly safely.

      I live in Canada and winter travel s well .. take it easy, it 's like a dfferent world; just .... do you have any clue as to the max nose up angle for a take off.. they go by feel?

    It didn’t help that the DC-9-14/15 series had higher stall speeds and was exceptionally sensitive to wing contamination as it lacked the leading edge slats found on the DC-9 30/50 and MD-80 series

      I was thinking the same thing. If I had been the local airline boss at the time, I would have made sure any DC-9-10 series aircraft had additional deicing done during icy conditions. Some airports actually put deicers near the heads of the active runways; I'm surprised Stapleton didn't do that.

    I was on a flight out of O'Hare on the way home for Christmas leave. We were already delayed because of poor conditions and icing. The pilot decided to put the ATC chatter on the headphones and we could hear the pilot's talking with ATC asking for clearance and the whole nine yards. It was actually cool. As we began our rollout I noticed the aircraft was being blown side to side - the pilot was doing a drunk walk just to keep the aircraft on the center line. As he rotated the left wing dipped, just like in this video, then the aircraft rolled right, overcompensating, and the pilot then rolled left again. I swear to God the tip was feet if not inches from the runway. It was at this point that the headphones went dead, and it seemed like forever before we got a positive rate of climb. I thought I was going to die and I actually got very calm. When it was over nobody said anything, but you could tell the FA's were shaken up.

      Flying is scary, I find myself thinking in those situations, if everyone has done their job correctly...seems a lot of these accidents happen from a series of mistakes, from different areas of the aviation industry, at least we are safer now than we've ever been, it's taken too many accidents to get here.

      Ironically I think it was a DC9 or maybe an MD-80. It didn't have engines under the wing, that much I know.

      I'm going to forgive you one time for saying tarmac. Not many people know too much, refer to it as the taxiway if you're getting on the runway, and runway if you're taking off.

    I've watched too many of these. I think most of us knew what was going to happen before it did. May those killed in this very preventable accident rest in peace. The blame is on the airline and the pilots themselves. They were told about the ice and decided to takeoff anyway. The airline is also hugely to blame for putting pilots together with such little experience on the DC-9. Truly tragic all the way around.

      And pressure to land come-what-may. That's particularly a male tendency unfortunately - excessive focus on achieving the original goal and not enough consideration of the risk of the known or likely obstacles

      @@herseem It very much surprised me that they attempted to take off knowing they had ice on their wing. I can't imagine any outcome where they would have found that information unimportant to their flight. They were novices on this plane but not to general aviation. It boggles the mind to think they expected a good outcome.

    Epic video and very informative. I remember the accident and watching the news footage at the time. What was different about this crash was there was footage of some passengers walking from the area they were dropped off after being rescued and some interviews conducted. If I were you I wouldn't pay much attention to the viewers who criticized your use of capitals in the subtitles. One of those viewers only indicated his appreciation for your work after you had replied to his criticism. Astonishing! If people want everything customized to suit them, maybe they should make their own videos. I didn't have a problem at all with the capitals.

    I was sitting in row three in first class with a window seat taxiing from Minneapolis and watched this whole thing from flight 1713 taking off until it crashed outside my window on a parallel runway against us. I worked for Continental at the time in Denver and was returning home. I called the local news and told them that I was an eyewitness and told them everything I witnessed which is not exactly what you see in this video nor have I ever seen it put the way it really happened. There were flames coming out of both engines when it took off and it banked several times which to me always seemed like the pilot over corrected each time and on the fifth "overcorrection". they got progressively worse, I saw the wing hit the ground and then it went out of my view out my window but I knew it had crashed. The plane banked from the moment it left the ground and got maybe 100 feet off the ground or so. Don't know why I have never heard about flames coming out of the engines and the over corrections to the aircraft. But that is the long and the short of it from an eyewitness account as close as you could be.

    First, I don't understand why the NTSB report said only 27 minutes elapsed between de-icing and takeoff when the text caption says they sat for an hour (3:03) waiting. Does that hour include de-icing time? Second, the change in procedure -- not assigning two pilots with fewer than 100 hours experience -- doesn't seem relevant since one of the pilots here /did/ have more than 100 hours with DC-9.

    Lost a friend I went to school with, Sheri Nelson, who was 18 and on an FFA school trip. I still think about her and the others I knew or knew of, on this flight. Very sad.

    The airport was actually just called Stapleton International Airport. No Denver- in front of it.

    Thank you for another fantastic video. I am also a NATIVE of Denver, so this hit close to home. I remember this very well, so sad! And what is it with any DC plane? I have never and will not fly on a DC of any type; that is, unless I have a "death wish"! As always, you are the best on RUclips!!

    It doesn't matter how many flying hours you have overall, you MUST have AT LEAST 1,000 hours of experience in ANY aircraft to fly it.

    I learned a longgggggg time ago you don't take off with contaminated wings/tail. Almost got killed (flying freight by myself) early on in my career with ice/snow on top of the plane. 12,000 hours of flying later, have never done that, again. Never will. The airplane just won't climb or behave like it is suppose to.......ALWAYS get that krap off the top of the plane!!!!

    By all accounts, the DC9 was an unforgiving aircraft to fly at the best of times.
    To throw inexperienced pilots and extreme weather conditions into the mix was surely a recipe for the tragic event that occurred.
    From the clip it appears to be caused by over rotation and subsequent stall.

    I was a helicopter pilot, never piloted fixed wing aircraft. BUT, I could see this one "coming a mile away" A. 2 square heads in the cockpit who thought they were better, and more experienced than they were - by far. B. The were warned of a specific dangerous situation, i.e. snow, ice, etc. on their aircrafts surface(s) by other pilots C. Failure to properly communicate with the tower controllers. D. I think I saw that they rotated at a ground speed of 95 knots - ??!!?? (you'll never get into the sky, especially with rear-mounted engines, at that relatively slow speed in a snow storm, at "mile high (thin air) Denver, sparky). This crash was strictly preventable, and strictly caused by pilot error

      Yeah, it is sad. All things up to the end seemed risky but as soon as I saw rapid pitch increase at a relatively low velocity I felt that feeling in my stomach that says this is about to get real sad. I am not what you would consider a real pilot, hang gliders only for now, do you think once they started getting compressor surges and struggling for control that decreasing the pitch immediately may have resulted in a better outcome?

    The airline should’ve increased the minimum amount of total flight hours by the crew to more than 100. This crew had 200 flight hours on this aircraft and apparently it wasn’t enough.

    I'm not sure if you do suggestions, but I think it would be cool to do a video on Korean Air Flight 85 and Delta Air Lines Flight 1989 during the shutdown of US Airspace after the 9/11 attacks, the isolated flights that took place during this time are rather interesting (though most you vids focus on plane crashes and accidents, I think it could be an interesting event to recreate).

    How awful. I always thought the plane flipped over backwards before hitting the ground. My parents were in a United flight on the taxiway and saw it roll down the runway. They went back to the terminal and spent the night in a hotel. At least there were survivors.

    When Continental was rowing like crazy in the late 80s, my dad was at another airline and said he thought Continental was poorly run and unsafe just from watching the ground crew.

    I ask this question every time i see a video about a plane crashing due to sitting to long after de-icing. Why dont they build the de-icing pads closer to the runway.

    Even with low flight hours like seen here, a 24 day leave isn’t enough for your training to erode drastically enough to influence the crash. Maybe not being trained enough in the first place was an issue, but not just forgetting how to operate a plane in less than a month. I’ve been flying 17 years and have taken all 4 weeks of my paid vacation each year off for the last 15 years, never having come back suddenly feeling rusty or green. I would have taken my month off every year except the airline I worked for at the time had an unwritten rule that you don’t take off that much time at once in your first two years. Sure I could have, but you all know how reputation goes. Especially in the regional airline community where you fly the same routes with the same circle of people over and over and over, it’s basically like a middle school group of teenage mean girls with all the gossiping and cliques

      I believe it is a combination of the letter spacing distance and all caps that makes the subtitles not read naturally to me.

      The first indicator was 2 cocky pilots who didn't even get first clearance to get to the de-icing station!

    Two points: RUclips masks the outer edge of the video so some of the text went right up to the boundary of what was visible. AND PLEASE DON'T WRITE IN ALL CAPITALS, IT'S HARDER TO READ. Lower case, next time - please. I think you''ll find many people will agree with this sentiment

    I am getting tired of pilot error and airline maintenance issues and terrible airline managerial decisions as primary causes. Most accidents appear to be preventable. Money (profit) is at the root of these "accidents". First and foremost. People are a secondary concern. Disgusting. RIP poor doomed souls.

    Thank you for this but I'm pretty sure (100% sure) the "meatball" was RED in color, on the tail at the time it crashed, not black where it likely changed over in the early 80s but thanks anyway!
