    As a former Flight Attendant for UAL, I've seen firsthand how passengers complain when flight crew announces a return to gate for safety/mechanical issues. Remember, safety first and foremost above all. Better to get to final destination late than never...God bless

      The huff and puff is not because its going back to maintenance, of course that is a good thing, its because they paid good money for their trip, and its the airline job to insure that they do it in a timely manner.

      Back in the '80s I used to fly Florida-Washington-Florida a little more than once a month and usually flew Florida Air. It's good to be able to hold two different thoughts at once: I could be both annoyed over any delay and at the same time be pleased to do whatever flight safety demanded.

      His piloting was terrible though, he was the one pulling back through a stall. And he didn't reject the takeoff when he saw unusual thrust readings and slow acceleration.

    • @ko7577
      @ko7577 Год назад

      @@SamnissArandeen His piloting wasn't terrible. This video makes it sound like the captain was trying to save them all, in reality the dumbass was the reason the ice blew back on the wings. Even the technician who was talking to the captain was appalled by him and knew he was stupid. Pushing down - as he saw - wasn't going to help because they never got any air under the wings anyway.
      His Co-Pilot told him there was an issue immediately. This was 1982, not now. What captains said back then went. So basically the captain is your typical office dumbass who gets everyone into trouble and then thinks it's everyone else but him. The person who did the captions on this did a terrible job and showed very poor understanding of this accident. Just because the captain was saying "forward, forward" doesn't mean the Co-Pilot WASN'T already pushing forward. The captain didn't even know what the issue was and like any normal dumbass blamed the co-pilot, someone with military flight experience.
      The sad thing is, if the co-pilot had equal say in the takeoff, he probably would have aborted, but the pilot told him to go ahead and take off. From there, their fate was sealed. They didn't crash because of the stall. They crashed because they couldn't get any altitude because of the ice on the wings. You can't avert a stall at that altitude. I'm sure the captain died thinking the co-pilot killed them. In reality, the captain killed them all.

    FYI
    The Washington DC Metro had a derailment around the same time that day and emergency services were being dispatched there as well.
    So that day, you had gridlock from the bridge being closed due to the accident, airport being closed due to the weather, and the rail system messed up due to the derailment.

    I was on a plane that was delayed 45 minutes and then had to de-ice 2 weeks ago. We ended up getting to Denver 11/2 hours after our scheduled arrival. I had txted my son to let him know we’d be late getting back from SLC. He thought it was a bummer we had to de-ice. He’s 20 years old and remembers no major plane crashes in his life. I was 20 for this one and it is etched into my memory. I cried when I had learned the brave passenger who helped others out of the Potomac had died. I’m tearing up now. I hope ppl always remember what flying used to be like, when planes crashed relatively frequently, and not take all the hard work and sacrifices that went into making flying the safest form of travel today for granted.

    I don’t even know much about planes, but the entire time while they were preparing for take-off I was thinking in my head “Why not just let a ground team de-ice the wings on the runway?” Then at the end it says that they NOW de-ice planes that are on the runaway and have left the gate. Easily could’ve been prevented in hindsight.

      They didn’t activate anti ice but I don’t know why. The crash report said because the pilots flew the planes from warmer climates and so they were not used to icy conditions, which makes no sense, if you go to colder climates it is noticeable instantly. They knew ice was on the wings. Only they know why they didn’t go to the back of the queue for deicing. However they are not at fault entirely as planes should be de iced while taxiing and it wasn’t till after the crash that airlines adopted the practice.

Seared in my memory is the footage of a woman trying to grasp hold of a flotation device of some sort - but too exhausted and frozen to succeed. It was a terrible storm to begin with, and I cannot believe that flights were not grounded. What a dreadful event. RIP.

    I love their composure. “Larry, we’re going down”. I know! Says Larry. It is not just they didn’t activate anti ice because now planes are de iced while taxiing. So potentially there will still have been too much ice on the wings and the engines had ingested ice after the thrust was activated. They could have gone to the back of the queue by deicing again. I’m sure they considered it but they would possibly by then be out of flight time.

    Question to any commercial pilots out there: Even if you're getting outlandish readings on your engines, after flying for a number of years wouldn't you know "the feel" of the aircraft and know you will need TOGA power regardless in a situation with rough conditions? Also as other people have stated why wasn't the de-icing turned on? Is there a protocol to have it off while grounded?

    Just FYI, don’t think those big planes (saw a 747 when they were waiting in line) can take of from DCA. It’s longest runway is still really short

    I remember the day this happened, we were all shocked by the news that this was caused by icing, a common problem facing aircraft that depart Toronto in winter where I live.

    One of the survivors, I believe the one who was traveling with his secretary, has stated since the day of the crash that he had a bad feeling in his stomach the moment he realized the pilots were using reverse thrust. He thought at thar exact moment he needed to get off but for some reason he didn't. I'm going to go look it up, but before I do, I'm just going to say I believe he was either an aviation fan or small plane pilot, like he held a single engine certificate.

    I wonder why the other airplanes in the queue did not suffer from the same problem of ice accumulating on the wings?

    • @jblue705
      @jblue705 5 лет назад

      I was also wondering this since I first watched the events of this on Mayday. I was thinking some of those planes failed to de-ice again so you would think they might be at the same risk as this one. Maybe there was luck involved...?

    • @chinbosschinboss2484
      @chinbosschinboss2484 2 года назад

      @@jblue705 neither of you know when they were deiced, you are assuming that the order the planes are queued in, was the order they were deiced in, and I don't know why you are assuming that. This plane could have been one of the first to be deiced and therefor was standing around the longest. Also, the captain had his planes deicers off, don't ask me why, I think he had a death wish.

    If you're worried about the effective shape of the airfoil as he clearly was, why on earth would you try to climb out at a steep or even a normal angle of attack???
    If someone told you they had replaced your wings with some mystery airfoil section the last thing you would do is test out its critical angle of attack on take-off!
    This seems to happen often when aircraft are already facing other problems, what is the harm in taking off at the minimum climb rate necessary to clear the barrier fence when conditions are against you??

    This is a great video, yet again. there’s really great documtaries on this crash. One passenger who had quit smoking decided to sit in the smoking section of the plane, which was in the back of the plane back when you could some. You could say smoking saved his life. There were survivors in the cold water for hours. Rescue crews were struggling, finally a bystander says fuck this, takes his clothes off and drives headfirst into the freezing water to save the woman. It’s all on film. Crazy. Look up on RUclips “ordinary heros: Lenny skutnik”

    If the weather is bad. Don't Fly.
    If you think you need to de-ice again. Do it. Beats being dead.
    Turning the de-icer off has never been a good idea in any of the crash videos I've seen.
