FedEx Express (FedEx) Flight 647 was a flight between Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK), Oakland, California and Memphis International Airport (MEM), Memphis, Tennessee on December 18th, 2003. - Игры
Well that escalated slowly.
Too slowly.
Technically it descended slowly. It was a landing, silly.
Well, I can clearly see the problem, no one is flying the plane.
Wrong!
The voices, the voices were flying the plane.
Nah it's those remote controlled planes like the 727 crash documentary.
Haha
Holy shit, is it nice to see a recreation of everyone surviving. Thank you for giving us one with a happy ending.
This comment just ruined the ending as I started the video because it’s top comment 😂
Good for FedEx for correcting their check flights, and making it easier for deficient pilots to correct their skills. Glad no one was injured seriously.
I gotta say I was expecting something different after the casual windshear mention early on and then "a pretty good headwind" towards the end
It wasn't a gear collapse. The plane had taken off from Liverpool the previous day and someone had nicked the wheels.
Another great video! I've binge-watched every video on the X Pilot channel... now I'm bummed because there's none left to watch! Keep up the great work :)
That meant that the aircraft had suffered a hard landing with the left gear touching down at a rate of 12.5 ft per second.
You can say that again
@@BryanMalloch That meant that the aircraft had suffered a hard landing with the left gear touching down at a rate of 12.5 ft per second. :) Bryan, your turn now! :)
@@asully3006 I'm still a little confused as the caption only specified it twice... did the aircraft suffer a hard landing with the left gear touching down at a rate of 12.5 ft per second?
The aircraft had suffered a hard landing with the left gear touching down at a rate of 12.5 ft per second.
What about the left gear touching down speed?
Eish. That thing was blackened more than my well-done steak at Denny’s yesterday. Oof, dude. Glad no one was injured too badly.
We need a video on the FedEx flight from Cast Away
That's actually not a bad idea for April Fool's day!
Yes, please.
WILSON!!!
FedEx now has all jets carry a pair of ice skates.
Did they ever recover the black box flight recorder? Or, is it still in Bikini bottom with Spongebob?
Great job of giving us the story to follow
Your channel is excellent.. thanks for doing it for us... 👍
so glad u uploaded x
Thanks for the great video!
Incredible dramatic flight
Great video!!
This is why I like your channel more than the others. Just good quality simulation and facts. No overdramatic music.
Captain: Keep it out of the grass
F/O: *nervous laughter*
The captain must have known that there was a very good chance he was going to end up in the grass by his speed and the way he lined up the aircraft. Just as if you were a driver but in the passenger seat you would be able to sense if the driver needed to slow down or wasn't going to make a turn etc. Why not guide a clearly nervous, jittery F/O than throwing him in the deep end and watching him sink?
SHE not he. The pilot let her fail because she was apparently a terrible pilot to begin with.
He was probably was expecting a better flare.
That was the critical issue it sounds like.
Great video. Fun to watch, I’m from Memphis.
Even though the pilots were criticized for their less-than-stellar performance, their very survival may have well been dependent on their combined experience - which was a lot. On the other hand, they made rookie mistakes. I think I just canceled out my own comment.
But worth noting is the excellent video! Well done, sir. Well done.
@@jackshittle 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hope they didn't get demoted or worse fired!
@Mike Watkins concur :)
@@jackshittle Ouch! lol
@@jackshittle lt's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether.
great work done
Great vid as always, glad to see you in my notifications. :D
Stunning visuals in this video! Kudos.
It's X.Pilot simulator.
Outstanding animation and captions.
aircraft might have not landed smoothly, but this video did.
Another high fidelity recreation. Thx
Thank God nobody got killed
That's some cool scenery. My X-Plane 11 has generic nothingness on the ground when I fly, I'm jealous lol
Amazing vid👍
Good Video! 😁
Excellent, good video 👉👍
Very nice video!
She was supposed to keep that thing outta grass...
I'll do my very best hahaha
That was a she. --- The first officer, age 44, was hired by FedEx on February 21, 1996, from Mesaba Airlines, where she had been employed as a DeHavilland DHC-8 captain. She holds an ATP certificate (issued March 21, 1991) with a multiengine land rating and a flight engineer certificate for turbojet-powered airplanes. The first officer's ATP certificate indicated type ratings in the DHC-8 (issued September 21, 1992), Fokker F-27 (issued November 11, 1995), and MD-11 (issued October 22, 1998). FedEx records indicated that the first officer completed initial MD-10 differences training on February 10, 2003. The first officer's most recent FAA first-class airman medical certificate was issued on July 25, 2003, with a restriction that the holder must wear corrective lenses.
Shut up wesley
gotcha, thanks @@SteveHolsten
@@SteveHolsten I think someone deleted their comment. The interaction between her and the Captain seemed strained at the least. Thank you for sharing her background, it makes her novice mistake even more perplexing to me.
I guess the first office failed that check ride.
she failed lots of checkrides, and had a real sour attitude as well
NICE VIDS I LOVE IT
Very nice video
thank god a happy ending!!! thanks, x pilot!
Looks so clear omg
i know, right.?!?!?!? i thought i was flying there for a second.....
That's windex for you!
I'm very impressed!
The 120 page 18 Dec 2003 NTSB investigation/accident report for this accident is online in PDF form.
"....the airplane touched down extremely hard while still in a crab."
ebayerr Or just go to The Aviation Herald and read it all and then some.
When your in crab, it's hard not to set down hard on one set of wheels!!!
Another great video - you do the best ones of these on You tube.
AshtonArcher flightchannel’s videos are the best, in my opinion. Nonetheless, both are great!
@@terrell5145 I'm not too keen on those videos, he always puts dreadful music on them, plus you can always see his pointer/cursor controlling the airplane - very amateur!
Damn good video!!!
Awesome!!!!!
I was not having the best day at work, till I watched this video...
I don’t know why I found this so funny! 😂
There must have been a lot of pissed off customers, waiting for their packages that week.
oh I was just thinking about all the critical shipments. Most companies only pay for air delivery when it's damn important.
another happy landing
Dude i missed ur contents so much :(
I like watching these videos rooting for a safe landing.
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing
and any landing where they can reuse the plane again is a great landing. lol
I think they needed to run away from that landing.
Especially during that "time" of the month.
@@sparkyobrian1383 Thanks Sparky. i just spat my coffee over my keyboard:)
Nope. Some like this sucked balls big time.
I remember seeing this on TV. I live 5 minutes from KMEM.
Great 👍
Way to go rookie
A good landing is one everyone can walk away from... a great landing is when they can reuse the plane.
my favorite fact about this crash is a passenger on the plane tried to help with the evacuation but accidently detached the inflatable slide. the slide can be detached to be a makeshift water raft.
Had me on the edge of my seat ...
What addons man ? Sky, clouds, shaders, plane etc ? Nice atmospheric scattering effect.
The answer to wind shear is not more airspeed but keeping the engines spooked up and using spoilers to keep airspeed down.
We are survived!!
I remember seeing this plane in the grass at the airport when I got to the yard. It was still on fire. Did they explain why the 1st off. landed so hard? did he not look at his vert. speed?
guys im a little confused...at what rate did the left gear touch down when the aircraft suffered a hard landing???

Right Landing Gear: 14' 6.0".

@@SuperPhunThyme9 I heard and/or saw it correctly in the video. There were no typos in my reply to Mohammed Alharbi's question.
F/O: Gosh golly Cap! This thing sure does land funny!
I’m glad they were safe, but I was not expecting the fire at the end. It’s weird that they are addressing this by recognizing training deficiencies when the FO had 15,000 flight hours. I’m not so sure that’s a training issue as much as he was just not very adept. Very odd case. Thank you for this presentation. I love your channel!
knowledgetracker they didn’t say how many hours he had “in type”.
15,000 flight hours is sega after burner
The excessive speed did not cause the landing gear failure, it was the yaw of the aircraft in addition to the right wing dropping at touchdown that caused the landing gear to collapse. Aircraft must take 500 fpm landing strikes by design, but this aircraft hit the runway somewhat sideways descending at 870 fpm. Given the weight of the aircraft, they are lucky to walk away. A 20-degree crosswind is not difficult to handle, given 16G22. The added speed probably saved their lives. I disagree about terminating people for making mistakes - they won't make that one again, but consistently below-average performance should be a red flag. The check pilot … smack him with a book of approach plates. What were you thinking? jmho.
I thought for sure there would be deaths, but thankfully, not this time. What a fantastic video (as usual), thank you for the upload!
nice
memphis again omg, i fly out of there all of the time
Avoid flights where the cabin crew use words like "goodness".
FedEx 647
Fatalities : 0
Survivors : 7
Where's my parcel I've ordered for 2003 Christmas ?
Danm! That's gonna be a lot of paperwork!
*And that Folks in short is how my Amazon **_next day delivery_** went awol !*
The MD-11 has a modified airfoil design. The tail provides less lift / less drag requiring the MD-10 to have to come in at a higher speed similar to a fighter jet. There is also an optical problem which makes it harder for the pilot to tell where the nose is.
"Keep it out of the grass..."
*Foreshadowing intensifies*
Another great video, thanks. I've been working a lot with VR, and would love to see what a crash video as a 360 stereo video would be like, so you can sit in the captains seat for example.
Intersection MACEE, not MAGEE (just saying) All looked good till touchdown; must have pounded it in pretty good and a bit of a shock in the departure into the grass..
Not to state that they shouldn't have landed safely, but I wonder what forces the FO was working against when he/she said "Goodness", and why he/she proceeded to hard land when the decent was too rapid.
too embarrassed to abort landing and try it again.....
@@mrmustangman Right. It really does seem that simple.

Is this an fs2004 or p3d (Because the engine of the DC 10 were touched ground like fsx airplane movement)?

Any comm pilots out there that tell us (I'm a C 140 slub) what the touchdown speed SHOULD have been? thanks
if you look REALLY close at 6:05 you can see pilots
Instead of saying “keep it outta the grass.” He should’ve said TOGA
didn't the captain say that if they were not stable by 1000 feet they would go around? If i heard the tape correctly, the altitude (by aircraft system) called 1000 feet, then the FO asked for gear down.. and the flaps were not fully configured either... that is an unstable approach. A go-around should have been called by the captain.
Geez, where were you on Dec 18, 2003 with that insightful information! FYI, the FAA may come after you for withholding information!! Run.... :-)
Watching the landing: “Oh it doesn’t look that bad..........”. Shows real picture of plane: “ Oh God, Oh God, Oh God. It’s on fire!”
I don't it did catch fire. Just a poor choice of stock footage of some other FedEx plane on fire.
Random question but I’m assuming pilots are on this channel
Why can I use my cell phone (like cellular calling/texting) with certain airlines but not others ? I heard that the airplane mode is a bunch of bs and that unless it’s an old plane it most likely won’t interfere with anything. Is this true ? This might be a dumb question but why could people use sky phones but I can’t call on my cellphone? Also where did skyphones go?
It might, I repeat, it might effect the electronics on the aircraft. Some airlines just dont want to risk it. Sky phones were not wireless, therefore wouldn't affect the aircraft.
Robert Heinkel that’s a risk I’m willing to take if airlines are willing to take it
Chuck Noland was originally scheduled to take this flight...
So *_that's_* what happened to my last-minute Christmas presents....
I got mine, but it was crispy around the edges for some reason.
So did 647 stall in or was it flown into the runway?
A common recurrence in these videos is dc 10s.
Death cruiser 10
The DC-10 has had 15 incidents. The 737 has had 78. The 737 flies more routes though.
All in all, the DC-10’s safety record is in line with everything else.
@@Leopold3131 the dc10 has 32 hull loss incidents alone. And over 50 total.
@@Leopold3131 thats 50 out of 386 aircraft built. There are over 10,000 737 so what does that say.
Meeeez thinks good thing the nose of the plane was not overhanging a cliff. Would have made exiting the plane through the pilots window more interesting!!!
That plane looked like Two Face from Batman, comparing the burnt shell on the starboard side and the intact port side of the plane.
did it blow out the tire or destroy that side's landing gear altogether.???
Could we have a simulation of the simulation? then they would cancel each other out and we could see the real live footage!
