This song is a masterpiece. I´m a guy from Vienna, was 20 and at the military then. Unbelievable, how the British bands delivered during the 80ies. So independent, talented, creative and cool. Real musicians, real bands, real enthusiasm. No computers, no fucking effects, no people as part of the show - and nobody knows, what´s their role and why they are here. If I think of 80ies music, more than 50% of the songs I remember, are from bands like Style Council.Paul Weller is a genius and was a great influencer of British music during these times.
Mass unemployment in Britain in the early 1980s lead to people forming bands to make money. Hence the Second British Invasion was born. All part of Thatcher's plan. Great music, though!
British musicians were definitely using computers and effects for music production, even in the 1980s. Don't blame the technology for the blandness of modern music when the issue is a lack of creativity and an industry that chooses to churn out derivative, overproduced garbage rather than take risks.

@@ngc-fo5te MJ is one artist. Britain had about a million great bands/ artists in the 80s. Also in the 60s, 70s and 90s for that matter. I remember reading something about how America produced the biggest selling/ best solo acts, but the UK produced the biggest selling/ best bands. There is the odd exception here and there in both cases of course. But generally speaking it's true if you look at all time album sales.
i thought Weller's career would probably teeter out after the Jam, how wrong was i. The style Council was, has been and always will be one of my favourite bands.
For me they'll never be another decade like the '80's. It was exciting as I was young and life wasn't so serious. For those of us who were there we were lucky. Those who weren't born then missed a hell of a time to be alive.
The 80s were pretty great. Aside from the, y'know, ever present fear of nuclear annihilation. I always thought the decadent 80s mentality was more nihilistic than carefree. We were really just having as much fun as we could while riding the bomb down.
Love the fact that he had the balls to write and put out music that genuinely challenged the establishment. Love the Miners poster in the background. Respect to the working men and women.
Yes, this song is giving me a drive to keep going in life, I was scammed in October last year and lost all my life savings, but I’m just over halfway towards earning it back through hard work. So when I was down on the bottom all I could do from then on was ‘SHOUT TO THE TOP!!!’

As a young music maker This song should be a learning curve!!!!!!! Can you hear how they do it with the vocals and everything! The tempo the skill the knowledge these guys had; So much to learn so little time!
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
This was one of my favorite songs when it came out, just because it was so infectious but listening now as an adult with more knowledge on UK music history, it’s so evident how much of a Northern Soul tribute this was. Even down to Weller’s dance moves. Pure Wigan.
This is the best song to test your stereo system to. Full range of instruments, frequencies and vocals. I used to carry the vinyl with me when buying systems worth thousands of dollars.

It's thanks to all the shite weather they have in the UK - they've got no choice but to stay indoors most of the time learning to play their musical instruments. Mind you, New Zealand has an inordinate amount of brillo music too, & we're only 4.5 million people, at last count (though heaps of us are UK descendants too, so that supports your theory)! :-)

It is impossible to read the words, I end up singing them in my head.
Who’s listening in 2024? Stunning 😊
Me in 2024

Me,too.
Me from 40 years..and i'm french...!!!!

what a musical decade❤
In Japan, it is the theme song of the morning TV show and is a famous song that many people know. and One of my favorite songs.
Iligato
I hate Tokudane but this song is beautiful.

No one doesn't know about this
I just left Japan, for Nebraska (in the Air Force)...I worked in a secured facility, they would allow cassette tapes in, to play music...but never let them out again. So, for a period of 2 years...this was usually playing very loudly while I did mundane midnight shift work.
Also famous as commercial of SUBARU.
Legacy? or Impreza??
England owned the 80's no question about it
Not his biggest fan but I think Michael Jackson might have a say in that.
70s & 80s where the best music & times to enjoy ... How lucky we were !?!? 👍
But generally speaking it's true if you look at all time album sales.
ngc 5139 Beside having a unique voice he was good in dancing and performing while the britains in my opinion have really good taste in the sound.
By „he“ I mean Michael Jackson.

I'm absolutely agree with you
Arigatoooooo!!!!
This is a F A N T A S T I C song. I love it🥰
i thought Weller's career would probably teeter out after the Jam, how wrong was i. The style Council was, has been and always will be one of my favourite bands.
If you’re a guitarist with songwriting skills the likes of weller has you’ll never go hungry lol.
Mine too!
Fade out, oh man!
I just don't think that talented brilliance won't, can't, will never, ever, simply go out "like rhat"...
😎🙏😀
??.?.??..?.
Paul Weller: so much talent crammed into one bloke! Unbelievable!
God, how could anyone not want to just groove to this song forever.....
The Long Hot Summerx - The Story of The Style Council 😍
If you ever need a positive energy track before leaving your home in the morning this is the song to go out to the world with.
A timeless song, whose energy captures the human spirit; it is a gutsy soul singing and we can all relate to that courageous energetic spark.
Interesante lo que narras, siempre he pensado en esa unión entre el músico y su oyente, hay mucha conexión espiritual o lo que sea.
For me they'll never be another decade like the '80's.
It was exciting as I was young and life wasn't so serious.
For those of us who were there we were lucky.
Those who weren't born then missed a hell of a time to be alive.
TOTP, Saturday morning TV, half pence sweets, great times.
The 80s were pretty great. Aside from the, y'know, ever present fear of nuclear annihilation. I always thought the decadent 80s mentality was more nihilistic than carefree. We were really just having as much fun as we could while riding the bomb down.
Dead right, the time to be a live was the 60s/70s/80s. We've gone hi-tech now but it seems to have killed the soul.
I miss very much my '80s.. and this music at all.I love It more now than in '80s! Good voices never die!
Love the fact that he had the balls to write and put out music that genuinely challenged the establishment. Love the Miners poster in the background. Respect to the working men and women.
up the working class. All economic growth is created and grown through the working class !!
Straight up chignon Paul Weller
Sold out though in later life me thinks 🤔
Don't think he sold out mate, just too old for the fight. Kids, ex wives and all that. That crap takes the fight out of the best of us!
@@yviy1 I don't see he sold out. Get back to me if he accepts a knighthood, but I think he is still true to his basic values.
Yes, this song is giving me a drive to keep going in life, I was scammed in October last year and lost all my life savings, but I’m just over halfway towards earning it back through hard work. So when I was down on the bottom all I could do from then on was ‘SHOUT TO THE TOP!!!’
isto mesmo meu amigo vamos lutando e reconquistando tudo o que infelizmente perdemos, mais esta música é algo que nos renova e mostra que a vida é maravilhosa.

Paul Weller is just such an incredible artist he is up there with the likes of well ...the best of the best. Big part of not only the UK but the world! The Mod Father rock and soul.
As a young music maker
This song should be a learning curve!!!!!!!
Can you hear how they do it with the vocals and everything!
The tempo the skill the knowledge these guys had;
So much to learn so little time!

The 'Shite' just keeps on coming.. it's now November 2020!
Was that trading your food stamps?🤔😂
just another reason the 80s slapped! i wore this album out!
Is Paul Weller capable of writing a bad song? The Jam, Style Council, solo stuff, you just can't ever go wrong with any of it.
Lyrical genius up there with Bowie, Lennon/McCartney
@Chris Jonhson Oh, so much lough. Aaaaa
I am 17 years old.but i love 80, s from the bottom of my heart
I was lucky enough to see Mr Weller perform this live this summer at The Lytham Festival- absolutely brilliant and something I’ll cherish forever
This song just shows how good the eighties was

It's just mental the English produce the best music ever

Not English but the Britains produce the best Music ;)

It's thanks to all the shite weather they have in the UK - they've got no choice but to stay indoors most of the time learning to play their musical instruments. Mind you, New Zealand has an inordinate amount of brillo music too, & we're only 4.5 million people, at last count (though heaps of us are UK descendants too, so that supports your theory)! :-)
Never stopped listening
Mick Talbot is one of my favorite keyboardists, and The Style Council's one of my favorite groups.

I am sitting with Scarlett Johansson right now after our 12 hour lovemaking session at the Beverly Wilshire and she said, "Please baby, play your hero....play Paul Weller for me....pleeeeeease!." and then I woke up.....
My Italian man and I fight the night before I am going back to Sweden. We are silent in the car on the highway to Pisa Airport, as Mario drives there. Suddenly this song is heard on the radio. "I was half way home I was half insane" is all I hear. I turn to Mario and say: Great song.. Mario turns up the volume. We smile a little. By the time we are at the airport we are lovers again. Mario holds me oh so tight outside the entrance and whispers: Come back soon... This song always reminds me of that trip, five years ago..

I love it how Mick seems like he is agonizing while playing.
even today, there is not a keyboard that can allow that man to express himself to his fullest capability.
Why is this song so underated? Can't people see it's a classic.
This magnificent song should have a lot more views.

This is one of the best songs ever
This song brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it. I must confess I have no idea what it's actually about (I pay little attention to lyrics), but the music just has an incredible positivity, happiness and friendliness to it. Just an incredibly warm song.
It’s a protest song. It’s a serious message that can also make you dance. It’s an incredible song.
"Shout to the Top" he has also said is a metaphor for calling out to God. Listen to the the lyrics and it makes sense.
Always aim high with hope it keeps you going its uplifting
You summed that up beautifully.
@@kirbywaite1586 thank you. I try my best, but it's rare I am so emotionally moved by music :)
