    ↓ LYRICS ↓
    [Intro]
    To your soul
    To your soul
    Cry
    Cry
    Cry
    [Verse 1]
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
    [Verse 2]
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
    [Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
    [Verse 3]
Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
    [Verse 4]
And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them, just to your soul
No, you never cried to them, just to your soul
    [Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
    [Bridge]
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    [Verse 5]
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
    [Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away

    This song changed my life.
I remember the first time I saw the music video for this song in an isolated small town boy in northern Alberta, Canada. After school my brothers and I watched CBC's 'Video Hits with Samantha Taylor'. I was 15/16 years old ... my brothers were playing games when the Smalltown Boy music video started.
It was me. My life. All of it.
Every word went straight to my heart and for the first time in my life, I did not feel alone.
I remember being so paranoid looking to see if any of my family recognized me, recognizing the content, the lyrics, the terrible loneliness, the fear, the hatred and the bullying. Years later a dear friend heard my story while we were roommates and she bought me the CD of an album I was too afraid to buy as a teenager. (I still have it by the way Lavender Menace.)
This song is everything to me. When someone asks me what life was like growing up in the 80s, gay in small town nowhere, I tell them it's 'Smalltown Boy' by Bronski Beat and the music video is about fleeing to save your life. I ❤ you Bronski Beat. Always. You may have saved my life.

That's so moving and eye-opening. Thank you!!! I was just thinking about my first time hearing it, and indeed... I was a 10-y.o. smalltown boy, living in a small town in central Bosnia, walking to the city centre to buy me a Bronski Beat cassette and then walking back home and listening to it on my walkman... I didn't know what they looked like or what they stood for, the only thing I knew was that they were from England and their sound was fresh. Enough for me to make up the rest in my Smalltown Head ☺ Those were very happy days... We used to be such happy kids ❤

Jimmy was in my class at secondary school before I left in 1978 to be a car mechanic and gradually lost touch with my schoolmates.
.I met my (then girlfriend-now my wife) in 1983 and surprisingly she told me Jimmy used to work beside her and her mum in Alexander Ferguson’s paintwork in Ruchill Glasgow. What a small world!
This song holds a special meaning to me as I also had to heartbreakingly leave home without fond goodbyes-not to come out as gay but for the love of my wife who my parents and sister wouldn’t accept into their lives and I didn’t want to lose her.
We’ve been happily married for 39 years but the rift and bitterness is still there despite my father dying suddenly 36 years ago and my mother is now 91.Some wounds don’t heal.
How strange though that this old schoolmate has been in the “background” personally and musically within my life.
Wishing you every success Jimmy and thanks for putting Maryhill forever on the map you and my best mate Bobby Carlisle.

I have tears of sadness and sympathy for all those poor boys who have suffered prejudice and violence and been forced to leave home for a dangerous and cruel world. LYRICS
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them, just to your soul
No, you never cried to them, just to your soul
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
    Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away

Like so many others, I came to watch this after hearing of Steve Bronski's death today (December 9, 2021). It immediately transported me back to 1984. I may not be gay, and things weren't horrible at home, but the song just happened to be a hit at the same time that I was leaving my own small town with not much more than a little black case, venturing into the terrifying unknown. There was nothing for me if I stayed, but I had no idea what might await me if I left. I just knew I had to leave. Listening to "Smalltown Boy" at the time gave me hope. Luckily, like Jimmy in the video, I found my tribe. The song still carries particularly powerful memories and resonances for me. RIP Steve.

And i saw this incredibly full of energy little man on stage, years ago, when he stopped singing in the middle of a song to tell the audience to wait, for 2 children were there, in front of him, uncomfortable among grown ups dancing and fans pushing to get to the first row. He asked the security guys to take them out and let them dance more safely, between the public and the security gates. Then he started singing again. It was a wonderful moment and gig (for them, and us watching them dancing freely till the end of it).

Nothing to do with age and nostalgia of us old farts, it's all the same autotune and whoop that sounds great when you hear it the first time and put on repeat for 10 times, rince and repeat the next No. 1 hit and get fed up and end up back in the eighties because that music never bores and you want to repeat 100 times and more

By 1984, when this song came out, I was a lost, lonely, physical abused, alcoholic/naïve, drop out full time working young 15 year old boy who thought he had all the answers, trusted nobody & listened to nobody but myself.
By 1994 I was a 25 year old combat veteran, married, still an alcoholic & now dependent on opiates & benzos while trying to hold a full time job & still thinking I was in control, knew it all, had all the answers while still only listening to myself.
By 2004 I was 35 year old divorced, 3 DUI’s while addicted to alcohol/opiates/benzos & had a son with a new girlfriend & was a stay home dad due to my inability to work because of those addictions & alcoholism but still thought I was in control, knew it all & still only listening to myself.
By 2014 I was 45, 3x divorced, been in & out of the VA hospital due to my addictions & PTSD/anxiety issues, many more run-ins with the law, 2 sons but most importantly I was clean & sober & able to work part time all while having serious doubts about me knowing it all & started realizing I was not in control, didn’t have all the answers & open to listening to others.
Today in 2024 at age 55, I’ve got 18 years of sobriety, I’m married 3x, am an involved father to both my 21 & 14 year old sons as well as my wife’s children, have gotten my criminal record expunged & sealed, have a home with lots of stability, hold a full time job & came to the realization I didn’t know much, accepted I need to listen to others around me that genuinely have my best interests at heart & learning from all my experiences.
Looking back, as hearing this song tends to allow me to do, life was definitely a struggle & a bit of a roller coaster ride for me. Making matters worse was the fact that for about 35 + years I listened to nobody but myself thinking I had all the answers which included surrounding myself with people who told me what I wanted to hear not what I needed to hear.
Most importantly, DO NOT give up, even when it’s gets dark & tough, because trust me you are worth it!

His lyrics convey his feelings and the context in which he experienced them very well. I was in St Albans, a town north of London. When you took the train to go to London, perhaps with a leaden sky, in the silence this song came to mind.
... It's also difficult to use grammatical terms that sync well with the instrument's notes. Writing texts that convey feelings well using only a few adjectives is difficult. So when you listen to the songs you realize what a true master Jimmi Somerville was.

Finally looked it up & now I know why it wasn't played on the radio back then. Sure we had Culture Club, Queen, & Wham!, but none of them were "out" yet, and the only Frankie Goes to Hollywood (apparently the only other openly gay band at the time) song I ever heard was "Relax". Kids back then had no idea what "gay" actually meant, only its use as an insult. Trying to imagine how different things would be if people had always just accepted other people, period.

So lucky for me and my wife, that this was never our story. 16 years age difference between us. We got together when I was 19, and she was 36. Her parent's adopted her in their 40s. I can't speak much Spanish, they couldn't speak much English, but both our sets of parents accepted us and we've been together for nearly 24 years. Her uncle and cousin surprised us at our wedding, and almost a week later, her dad died in hospital 20 minutes after we arrived at his bedside, and we had no idea he was going to die. Sadly, we've now lost her mum, uncle, and auntie, and I miss them deeply. I was instructed to call them 'mama' and 'papa' and was truly blessed.

Just as an example, Sinead O’Connor’s song “Troy” sounds to most listeners as if it’s about a love affair (perhaps an obsessive love) that didn’t work out well, Sinead actually wrote this song about her relationship with her mother and the abuse she endured as a child while growing up …

I was born in 82, and came from a busted up home. My mum then ran pubs. I left home at 16, got into drugs, and lost everything, and became a complete scumbag, and went raving until 21, when I joined the army and went to war. I then did 5 years, got PTSD, and got kicked out for drugs in 2008. Then I lost everything again, and rebuilt my life, and moved to Australia, drove to Mongolia, and travelled 35 countries. I had a bad car crash which disabled me, and I'm still having surgeries for the injuries. I'm 41 now and run a building and project managing company. I have an equally damaged girlfriend of 7 years, and we have a house, and a veg garden and chickens. We have one rule in this house....dignity, love, compassion and understanding are more important than anything else. Wherever you're going through....just enjoy what you can from it, and see it for what it is...a scene from the film of your life. Life is both beautiful and tough...so don't make yours, or anyone else's harder than it already is
I love you all, and wish you well! X

    To your soul
    To your soul
    Cry
    Cry
    Cry
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away…
