4:37 NO! That is NOT Liquid Snake! (how could I miss this QnA... People are so lucky they were able to ask questions to the legend himself. I really REALLY hope they'll let us QnA with Mr. Hayter again in future..)
David is really transparent when it comes to voicing Big Boss and Solid Snake, gotta love him for that since imo he's the definitive voice of Big Boss and Solid Snake in the English dub. I'd actually pay for a DLC for MGSV for a full redubbed of David Hayter just to voice Venom Snake.
*spoiler* Venom Snake is just some medic so it wouldn't make sense for him to have Boss's voice. The choice wasn't against Hayter in any way, it was just narratively logical.
I couldn't imagine a new Metal Gear without Kojima simply due to his design quirks, but if they remade MG1/2 (MSX) into a single game it would be great to have Hayter back in the role.
There is some potential with MG1/2 and MGS remakes because Kojima doesnt like remakes and was apparently behind the choice to make the game cube remake so different(the team involved wanted it to basically be 1:1 with the cutscenes). If the team at konami took the magic from those games and just updated the graphics and gameplay a bit they could be great. In my opinion Kojima has become an egotistical hack, but thats just my opinion. His masterpiece for me was MGS1 but that is largely nostalgia(I still enjoy the game though).
It's not impossible, it just takes a creative vision, and unfortunately, that's exactly what modern AAA game design lacks. Metal Gear Rising was great, Metal Gear Ghost Babel was great. Good Metal Gear can still exist without Kojima, but they gotta bring their A-game and a great idea to make it stick the landing.
The fact that the original Big Boss does show up in a cutscene at the end of Phantom pain, is such a wasted opportunity when they could have had David Hayter voice the real big boss at the end. People would have still been annoyed by it, but they would have at least been able to accept it better by having that final acknowledgment.
I’ll be honest, my dream as a fan is Hayter playing Solid and Kiefer playing Big Boss in the same game, I just vastly prefer Kiefers delivery as an older Big Boss
That wouldn't have made any sense in the context of the game. Everyone would instantly know it wasn't Big Boss because his voice doesn't match. Big Boss and Venom needed to be voiced by the same actor. And yes, that actor should've been David Hayter.
@rinraiden To quote Naked Snake when asked by Sigint how he has a gun that not only is a one-of-a-kind but was just seen in the hands of The Boss a few minutes prior. "Don't get worked up over the details". Not to mention that venom snake had 108 pieces of shrapnel lodged across his whole body. It really wouldn't be that hard to hand wave away a change in voice as one of his vocal cords getting hit.
In Japan, Akio Otsuka did the voices for both Venom and Big Boss. What I think would have worked well would have been to use him as only Big Boss, hire another person for Venom, and chalk up the voice change as yet another of the many injuries Venom suffered. The injury angle would fit perfectly with the idea of Venom "forgetting" how to speak Russian. So, the same could have been done for the English version. David Hayter stays as Big Boss, and Keifer Sutherland as Venom. Then pull an M. Night Shyamalan (What a twist!) when the real Big Boss arrives in "The Truth" cutscene.
Venom having a less gruffly voice compared to Big Boss can be explained by him being longer in a coma. (the real Big Boss woke up way earlier) since he stopped chain smoking for nearly nine years, it affected his voice.
In japan, if they had gotten another va to try and play for any variation of snake/boss it would have caused a PR issue, culturally they dont 'change' va's unless the va cant do it or has passed away. Its more of a cultural issue there.
Mr.Hayter is like how most of us geeks look at Kevin Conroy. He is the authentic voice of Batman, or how we look at peter Cullen, here's the ultimate authentic Voice of optimus prime.
I really hope they make complete remakes/reimaginings of Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2. Call them Metal Gear Solid: Outer Heaven and Metal Gear Solid: Zanzibar. Fans would get 2 brand new Tactical Espionage games staring Solid Snake (David Hayter). Reimagine the entire environment and puzzles while staying faithful to the MGS Cannon, story and Lore.

1:55 Yeahhh it's definitely a cheat. I don't understand why you'd be consistent with the japanese side of things but then flip it in the English dubs. I also get the feeling that the only reason we're even getting a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is so that they can cash in on the fan base. And considering it sounds like they're going to use the original audio takes I get the sneaky suspicion it's just so that they won't have to pay the voice actors for new content. Greed knows no limits in our world.
I remeber that i read somewhere that one of the reasons raiden was the protagonist of mgs2 instead of solid snake was to make snake look like the perfect soldier that it was known to be. In the player's hands that would be difficult since the average player makes a lot of mistakes when playing the game. So it was to make a better development of the character (i feel that it worked really good when you play the game)
I stand by the view Hayter should have been in V as Big Boss at the end. Because Sutherland was breathtaking with the few lines he had. But it was such a great way to let Kojima have his cake and eat it with the character. Personally I think Sutherland is a better middleground between Hayter's Big Boss and Richard Doyle's Big Boss.
4:42. I'm pretty sure it's been said that Raiden is the protagonist in MGS2 so that the player can look at snake from another perspective, for snake to look badass to the player and that sort of thing.
Honestly Dave I would say that if there was another Metal gear game we really need to go to the beginning from the Nintendo platform about how Snake became from His first mission then His battle with Frank Jager in Metal gear solid 2 which would lead in metal gear solid which we all know. I like to see more of the back story of the 2 and how Frank helped Snake become a soldier.
Nice question at 5:35. Solid Snake is a good character and the way Kojima wrote Solid Snake is like an american comicbook "super hero" in terms of heart and ideals. Maybe not as reletable as Big Boss but just like The Boss they are heroes in the end.
Love David. He is Solid Snake for sure. I also loved him as The Guyver. That said, Keifer Sutherland killed it as Big Boss. I just wish they would've given him more dialog. I much prefer his Big Boss to Hayter's.
Raiden was the main character because it fits the theme of the game. Snake looks like more of a legend from a different perspective. Check out the Resonant Arc podcast they are covering metal gear right now

I must admit that i was a little mad and disappointed when they replaced him in Metal Gear 5 when in the japanese version they kept the same voice actors who played Snake in all the previous games. That being said i do understand that maybe they wanted to separate Snake and Big Boss voice and give big boss his own voice, but as a long time fan of the series even today i feel a little sad about it.
I am actually very happy to hear that Davis finally played through V and I totally get that he is still a bit annoyed. However, as he described his feelings in the past, it used to be something that affected him deeply and it seems like after playing, yes he's still annoyed but in his own words, not that much.
He has a point about the voice, I mean Venom was meant to be such a 1 to 1 of Big Boss and suddenly he sounds different? Top that off with the fact like he said the Japanese cast remained the same.

For people wondering why mgs3 is being remade first. It's technically the first story of snake, since it takes place 31 years before the first games.
After is portable ops, then peace walker, finally ground zeros n phantom pain . I think they will remake the og snake stories, then we will get mgs1-2 n 4. I really would love to play mgs4 again.
His Otacon is dare I say, "pretty good"!
I HOPE THERE IS ANOTHER METAL GEAR AND I HOPE YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN IT BECAUSE YOU ARE SNAKE
Konami could print money with so much more MGS projects. Making MG1/2 to a full 3D game, maybe in 1 game. Making a serie or movie(s). MGS6, a prequel to MGS3?
As awkward as it might be I'd like to see David and Kiefer sit down chat about Metal Gear.
