- Since the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is releasing soon, I've decided to make this video showing a few interesting things about MGS1 that most people don't know. There's all kinds of things, including alternative codec calls and cutscenes, secret costumes and gameplay tricks. Let me know if you learned something about this classic game from this video in the comments bellow!

These old games are works of art. 90s were some of the best period in huma history.
If you read and listen to the MG1&2 recap text and cassettes in the main menu before starting a new game, Snake will have a lot less questions at the beginning sections of the game.
Yeah I remember that too, I used to love watching those as bonusncontent
@@PrincessRaynebowno clown smh
That's such a cool, menial, and ultimately pointless feature... that's also the kind of thing that just makes MGS... well, MGS. I love it.
@@irighteroticaWouldn't call it pointless. Helps with Immersion at least, and mgs was like the most immersive game when it released.
Bonus: If you set the sound to mono and ask for advice during the Hind battle, you will be mocked because you don't seem to have a stereo TV...
Never knew that one. Is it liquid who mocks you?
@@animelovers000 No, wen you ask Campbell for advice, it is the Naomi and Mei LIng
ruclips.net/video/TzG8Sty9veI/видео.htmlsi=vvERBY99IknaLt0L
@@animelovers000Campbell actually. He says something like "You DON'T have a STEREO TV??? That's okay, Snake! You don't need fancy tools to get the job done!"
If I remember correctly Colonel will even say something about there's more to a man than his TV 😂
@@ArcticaQuantumI remember Mei Ling being the one to chastise Snake but I could be wrong
After the elevator at the start, Snake will also mention VR training if you played the VR missions before starting a new game.
I didn't know about the vr training that snake can mention but i know about the others the different music if u don't pick the socom pistol that is cool
Haha that's funny considering Snake chastises Raiden for talking about VR training.
Not only that, if you're playing Integral he will also mention the tanker from MGS2. A VR iteration of it, presumably.
@@galuademg6958 would love a source of you can find it. My search resulted poorly
And if you read and listen to the recap text and cassettes in the main menu before starting a new game, Snake will have a lot less questions at the beginning sections of the game.
If you contact Master Miller once you heat the PAL key card you get this conversion:
Master Miller: The card changed shape? HURRY to the control room! That's the last key.
Solid snake: Master, I never heard you so excited?
Master Miller: .....
I discovered this while finishing it a few hundred times wondering how Master Miller codec conversions intel.
His portrait also has a small smirk in that scene as well. It's so slight it's easy to miss.
Still finding out new things about this game.
Yeah he was absolutely edging right then
Hahaha@@SullySadface
The alternative scene of meeting Meryl without the SOCOM should have been the default. Grabbing the barrel of her gun makes the point much better
Also voice acting in that alternative scene sounds more convincing imo
Agreed. It's pretty ridiculous that she wouldn't even respond when Snake points a gun at her, rookie or not.
and pulling out a gun without using isn't like snake either, not having a gun looks more like the "canon" event indeed.
@@MrSunglxzzWhat? He does this all the time
especially when he says "dont think, shoot!" while also not shooting his own gun
To avoid the wolves you could equip the handkerchief Otacon gives you because it smells like sniper wolf
I have been a fan of the game since 98... I never knew about some of those.
The parachute one shocked me.
I knew about that one and the wolf box trick. But the socom one with Meryl is a new one.
The love that went into this game. It truly is a masterpiece.
The thermal goggles are your best friend in this game it even works better in the dark cave than the night vision goggles
Thermal goggles are always superior to night vision no surprise there
Night vision goggles suck
@@ThreeXIFan indeed they do
you never need thermal goggles though, if you think about those lasers before the tank fight, just use your cigarets.
for the dark cave? that place is fairly easy anyway and not nearly as dark as it should be.
for claymores? I guess sure, but you run up anyway to trigger the cutscene and the claymores at the sniper wolf section is literally hold up (and also shown by meryl if you really don't want to hold up)
the claymores on the snowfield after the torture segment, again, run left and hug that wall, no claymores there.
@@DarkDyllon that covers so little ground and the fact that it drains your health when you use it it’s not worth it you use the thermals it covers everywhere inside there and you don’t drain anything
I've played the metal gear games countless times over the years and i'm still finding, seeing and hearing things i never found before. There were a couple on here i never even knew about. One i found out was if you call mei ling and choose not to save a few times, eventually she stops talking to you and you can see her poking her tongue out
That’s very funny
I don't know if I remember this correctly, since I haven't played MGS in a hot minute, but after that point you also lose the ability to save the game until you leave the room you pissed her off in.
Like I said, I might be wrong, so feel free to correct me.
@@WTFHAX93 You might be right on that. I know it happens in mgs 2 when raiden pisses rose off
You can also beat Snipe Wolf in the Snowfield with the stinger. You can end the fight quite quickly with the Bandana and just spamming missiles haha.
You forgot the diffrent cutscene when snake enters the air duct and then sees two solidiers talking with each other on the tank hangar level if you get spotted before they will mention about a new intruder killing 12 people referring maybe to Gray fox but if you have 0 alerts before reaching the cutscene they will not mention it !!!
Thanks for not ruining the textures with filtering like the majority of mgs1 videos. Its supposed to look pixelated like this
Pixels looked different on CRT TVs
I remember there were 2 additional secrets with the Revolver Ocelot boss battle.
The 1st is if you blow up the wall that lets you into the area where you have the boss battle but you stand there, if you go into first-person view you can see Kenneth Baker (thanks for correction). If you shoot your gun he can actually die, Revolver will shout YOU IDIOT.
The 2nd is the same outcome but during the boss battle itself.
You mean "Kenneth Baker"
@@ketsueki2b old man memory lol
Yup. Did this years ago
Same thing if you trip the C4, if memory serves.
About quarter of century after the release date, after beating the game couple dozen of times, after occasionally reading and watching trivia about less known content in first Metal Gear Solid, there's still something new for me.
Thanks for the video!
I discovered all these as a child...minus the sneaking suit. I've got one, when you go to meet the Darpa Chief for the first time, go see Meryl as per usual then climb back down the ladder. When you go back up, check on her again and she'll be doing a different exercise. Do it three times and she will be pant-less.
If you watch the very first video in the briefing section from the menu, and then exit out without selecting the next one, Snake will say he doesn't want to do the mission and the colonel blackmails him.
In the demo version of the game, the SOCOM-less version of the Meryl cutscene always plays whether you have SOCOM or not. When I played the full version of the game after that I was surprised by the different camera angles and different music.
Interesting. In the version on the demo disc I had, the game ends with the cutscene of the death of the DARPA chief. Which version of the demo did you have? Where does it end?
@@Gatherway PC version demo, it ends right as the firefight outside the cell is over.
I had that demo! I think it was from Pizza Hut. Legendary game.@@Gatherway
My demo ended going into the vents.. good times. Lol
Also if you get in the back of one of the 3 trucks in the game with a Card Board Box A,B,C a soldier will come out and bring the truck to the location written on the box. Faster way to travel to different locations in the game..Example you can travel from the snowy field where you fight sniper wolf the 2nd time to the Helipad at the beginning of the game in seconds then to the warhead disposal facility right after or vice versa
The same thing is true in MGS 2, you can use the boxes to fast travel around the big shell. You go into the room with all the boxes being shuttled around on conveyor belts, climb up onto the platform and then equip the box, and then you get transported automatically to one of the different struts in the game based on which number of box you equip. If you equip the Zone of the Enders box, then you will be transported into the locked room in that same strut and will be able to get an item much much earlier in the game, I can't remember what, I think it may be the sniper rifle but I'm not sure. You usually only get that item when you come back to that strut way later on in the game when you're transporting Emma to the Strut L oil fence, the whole sniping section, because that's the first time you have a key card high enough to get into that room through the door. So yeah just find the zone of the enders box instead and then that way you can get into that room without needing a key card.
I never knew that! That's awesome!
Although you have no reason for transportation. Its slower in when u have to backtrack, and after snowfield theres no business in earlier areas
Holy shit, this takes me back. I always remember when I was a kid and discovered that parachute in the snowfield. I was the coolest guy in my class when I told everyone about it. This was in the release year, some of us had only the demo disc and few of us had the game. We were all playing the game for the first time... Good times... Fuuuck I'm old now.
First time I played it was on the pizza hut demo disk. After we got the full game, I felt robbed. Once I made it to the heliport and climbed in the back of the truck, I was expecting the Nikita launcher to be there like it was in the demo. Lol... when we only had the demo we were so mind blown at how amazing the graphics were and the different ways to kill people. I had played the original metal gear on Nintendo, but never made it very far. We would all take turns and challenge to see who could go the longest without getting spotted..etc... good times, good times.
Wow! I have never seen anyone mention the Pizza Hut demo disc. I still have my copy, which I got from my neighbor! It still works amazingly. I teach high school now and tell my students about how awesome Pizza Hut used to be 😂😂
@@steveburns9939 what all was on that demo? Was twisted metal 2 on that one as well? That was so long ago, I only really remember MGS being on it... growing up my mom was like super poor we lived on her income alone, getting the playstation was a challenge for her, but she got us a playstation, nascar 98, crash bandicoot, and Shockwave assault (actually liked that game a lot)
Back when I played this on my (Japanese) PS1, I bought a copy of “Suikoden” just to hear Psycho Mantis mention it
Incredible, I played the original MGS1 on PS1 when I was 17 years old and I'm still learning new things about the game :)
There's a bit in the elevator with the ravens before getting to Vulcan Raven. If you call Otacon, Snake will ask "Why are there crows here?" but if you call Miller (Liquid) first he will explain that these are ravens. Then when you call Otacon the dialog will change from crows to ravens.
fine you got me, ive never noticed that damn parachute after sniper wolf fight
So I just found this out tonight on the psycho mantis boss aside from changing your controller port 1 to port 2 you can also use your thermal goggles so he can’t hide from you when he disappears like it never occurred to me to try this
After a Good Ending playthrough, put on the bandana, equip the FA-MAS, and go all Stallone on Mantis's ass.
Speaking of which, if you wait until one of the last three rounds in the FA-MAS magazine, then equip the bandana, it will fire unlimited tracer rounds.
@@MKDumas1981Wtf are tracer rounds? I noticed the 3 bullets at the end of the mag but never knew what it was for. I'm doing my first play through ever btw
I also used the thermals for the ninja fight
Tracer rounds are when you can actually see your bullet come out of the barrel. Usually it pops out every few shots to guide where your bullets are going. If you do this guys trick, every shot will be visible, and look like a laser gun famas@rubenrodriguez3252
Here is another one. During the Psycho Mantis figth, most people change the port, but you can beat him attacking him 8 times, he dodges every attack but the 8th attack will ALWAYS hit, Punches and Guns only.
Also there's a way to explode the statues on either side of the room that have gas masks on them, which allows you to beat Psycho Mantis without having to change controller ports too. Although I think you need to purposely die first, to do it.
@@duffman18 they tell you this if you die to Mantis and still don't change ports.
Crazy I remember playing this with my dad when I was a kid. I never knew about these secrets
One of my most dumbest moments, playing mgs and trying to find meryls codec frequency. All your told its on the back of the CD case!! I spent hours trying to find a CD case in the game and just when I was about to give up I saw the game case on my bedroom floor and noticed snake and meryl having a codec conversation on the back of it.....well done Kojima, well done!
Did you know that the steath camo has two perks and not one hehehe the second perk is when camo is active only on the og Metal Gear Solid, when active you can go though the lazers with out tripping the lazers it is a really nice trick but only works in that area , there is a second lazer area but that area is scripted for them to trigger an alert and you can't use that trick there.
Cool! I didn't know that.
I used to play MGS 1 all the time, but the parachute thing i only discovered after finishing MGS 4.
#MGS4FORPS4
@@MKDumas1981 never! If you own a ps4 you are a part of the problem

Always did the dog piss on the box trick hahaha beat this game a million times as a kid!
Had to sell my PlayStation and metal gear solid when I was back down South as real dad and real mum needed electric had to sell my Nintendo 64 to my Nintendo 64 games and all my PlayStation games im try ing to get a Nintendo 64 again to i live in Liverpool now real family gave up on me when I came to Liverpool wish I kept all my stuff but I'm going to get it all again
@@JayJay-nr2gkMate it’s not hard, eBay and Amazon has hunners. Trawl your local charity shops, cash generator and cash converters too. Sadly all my local ones closed but eBay has loads. MGS1 goes for £20-30 you’ll need a mem card too
You don't need to use the pissbox to get them to stop attacking you. Simply equip Sniper Wolf's hankerchief. Cos it smells of her. And so the wolves think you're her, because now _YOU_ smell of her, and so they don't attack you at all. That's why you get that item in the first place.
@@duffman18 you can only do that after you get the handkerchief:)
Integral's 140.66 frequency plays sweet MSX>PS1 tunes three of them for their respectful rooms. Having UniROM equipped has been a blessing to play it through around the region-lock
only on the Integral version (JP version, with Japanese text but english VA)
I appreciate that despite how old these games are, you still put a spoiler warning. I've played this game millions of times but there's lots of new players thanks to the collection. Awesome video btw, I didn't know some of these
Once you get Sniper Wolfs handkerchief, you can also use that to mitigate the angry wolfs.
In the docs theirs weak spots in the wall were you use c4 to blow a hole in the wall theirs several secret rooms like this with trap floors you can find c4 Socom bullets for your gun and rations
Every MGS game has tons of secrets, until someone discover something new. I thought I saw everything from MGS1, but I was wrong. I only knew about #1, #4, #5, #6, #8 and #10. So thank you for sharing, you earned my sub.
Agree, it's far easier to beat sniper wolf with Nikita than traditional PSG-1 method, too bad during the first encounter (where Meryl get hit) you can't use Nikita due to "radar jamming"
MGS1 is one of my most favorite games ever!
One of the videos where I've spent more time in the comments than actually watching, great stuff!
I can't believe I never learned about that parachute or heard that dialog
Solidus always sounded weird to me. I get they was trying to relate it to the states of matter solid, liquid n gas but I think they should have gone with the fourth state, introducing Plasma Snake 😅
I think Gaseous Snake would sound so stupid, probably why they went with Solidus lmao
Solidus is a term from materials engineering for metallic things like alloys, kinda in between solid and liquid. There’s also a liquidus state for that
That said, I agree-always wondered why there wasn’t a plasma and solidus sounds weird in general
It hints at the "perfection" of each Snake.
Liquid meaning he's inferior to Solid (even if it is a lie and backwards). While Solidus implies he is perfect and an exact copy of Big Boss.
There is also a translation "error" let's say.
It is not that one clone is superior, it is that one clone got the Dominant genes (Liquid) and the other one the Recesive genes (Solid).
@@seventysschev
Poop Snake (solid).
Pee Snake (liquid)
Fart Snake (gas).
Than we could be introduced to Plasma Snake.
@@xmaverickhunterkx Liquid got the recessive genes and Solid got the dominant genes. Liquid just didn't know anything about genetics and assumed that recessive means genes that make you weak and dominant means genes that make you strong. it's tragic how simple middle school biology could have healed Liquid's daddy issues.
I clicked on this expecting nothing new but you just showed me all kinds of things i missed! Awesome video, thank you :)
You can actually see Meryl after Decoy Octopus died in the cell before the next cutscene if you carefully peek out the door
When entering the missle warehouse if you look directly down besides the missiles you can see the floor under the missle warehouse if you go to the corner at the bottom of the stairs you will see a air duct the air duct can be opened which leads you into the floor seen directly under the missle warehouse
How do you open that duct? I had no idea you could actually go down there
that's not in the OG PS1 version, maybe the Twin Shits version, but not the OG.
You can save grayfox life before fighting metal gear you actually shoot a missile at metal gear when metal gear has grayfox pinned to the wall then metal gear releases grayfox and the fight continues
When you finish all the vr missions from the VR musings disc, you will see a diagram of metal gear ray
I know that MGS 3 and 4 had a lot of little details, but I had no idea this game did as well.
MGS4 has a lot less details the MGS1 2 and 3.
MGS2 being the most packed with optional content, so much that if you watch on Twitch Outerheaven do an in depth story playthrough (which they do quite often, atleast once a month of the entire MGS franchise with 2 people) an MGS2 playthrough can easily go to 20+ hours.
Extra secret: if you follow Meryl to the ladies room, and get to her booth within three seconds, she will be in her underwear in the following cutscene
I already did that 2 years ago. If nobody asked me I really don't mind I'm just saying
You can kill sniper wolf by shooting either the first or last mice which runs along the wall behind sniper wolf theirs three mice which run together along the wall
I'll admit, didn't know a couple of these. Amazing how much detail there was to these games.
Never knew that parachute thing 😮
That's crazy I really thought the thumbnail was all clickbait but Meryl in sneaking suit is legit
After fighting psycho mantis when exit the room entering the mountain caves the near end of the first pathway walls has a weak spot to your left and to your right use c4 and find rations in the wall and socom pistol bullets
Are you talking about The Twin Snakes Gamecube version here?
I been know everything you are telling me so did you know in the tank hanger on the second tier next to the security camera there is two rooms the second room has sneaking sneakers for snake to wear so he is not heard walking across the loud metal floor on the second tier
I first played the game on a JamPacked demo disc from Wal-Mart when i was a kid. I found one particular secret that i haven't heard anyone discover yet, if you pick up the Socom, travel to the floor where the Darpa Cheif is located, and then go back to the truck where you found the pistol, the Nikita missile launcher would then be there. We had so much fun with this, the demo would end once you climbed out of the vent in the Darpa Chief's cell, so we'd have fun playing with the guards and discovering new things just within that small section of the game. Excellent video, such an excellent game to still find out new things this many years later. I had my daughter play the game for the first time, and she somehow missed the thermal goggles, so when the time came for her to have to dodge the lasers on the way out to the mine field i was truly stumped, because i always would use the thermal goggles, so i looked up the alternative way and discovered that you could see the lasers if you have snake smoke cigarettes, which I'm sure some players picked up, but was still fun to learn something new.
mgs 1 is probably my favorite game of all time, been playing it since i was like 12 years old. soo many playthroughs and never knew some of these details. thanks for the video!!!
The thing I found crazy was the different lines Psycho Mantis would say to you, depending on what games you had on your memory card, how often you saved and how many alerts you'd triggered. That felt really unique at the time and was a great addition IMO.
You like Castlevania, don't you?
Sooo you play Suikoden!
Im surprised you didn't include Vulcan Raven criticising you for "killing his friends" if you kill any of the ravens on the elevator ride. Or Meryl's two underwear scenes.
I'm in my 5th or 6th playthrough and I this time Meryl was in her underwear when we meet up in the bathroom; I have no idea what I did differently this time. What triggers that scene?
@@ZenMonkeyGod it's dependent on how quickly you follow Meryl into the bathroom. If you're quick enough, as you were that time, she hasn't had time to fully change back into her normal clothes. But you have to be pretty quick behind her to trigger that scene.
After all this time this is the first time I found out about the parachute. Wow. This game had SO much packed into it.
And you’ll be able to see metal gear ray designs after beating the vr missions
I find post credit audio scenes somewhat eerie, especially mgs2's post credit audio
I think I knew about the pissed cartboard but I'm not sure, maybe I'm mixing it with the handkerchief you get from Otakon that belonged to Sniper Wolf. If you have it the wolves don't attack you.
I know I saw both the Otakon and Meryl ending but I don't remember Ocelot mentioning that the president is Solidus and he's the third one :/
Damn... I admit it, you won, I can't say for sure that I knew at least 1 of these and I thought I know a lot about this game.
Awesome secrets. Awesome game. Awesome video
I never knew of the meryl sneaking suit
ocelot: you're pretty good 😂
Meryl is not a secret costume Meryl is a real playable character on the original metal gear solid also theirs much you can learn from me being the real snake from metal gear solid
After all these years. I thought I knew about most of these interesting things. Everything in this video was a revelation except the wolf peeing on box trick and the 2 Endings. Thank you so much.
Did you know when exiting the elevator to your left next to the security camera room there is a drive threw which leads to the floor under the missile storage room when you look from the left and right of the missiles on the floor you can see threw the floor also there is a second entrance to the floor there is a air vent at the bottom right corner under the stairway which you can crawl in and enter the floor beneath from the ceiling ?
i know 8 of them but meryls sneaking suit detail is so great
I remember using that tip with the cardboard box and wolf pee back in the day
In the Japanese version of the game, if you haven't killed anyone or tranqed them during the whole game, except for bosses, you actually patch Sniper Wolf up and she survives her encounter. She still doesn't go for Otacon though.
Is this for twin snakes?
@@brodude3709sounds like bullshit.
@@brodude3709 He said tranqed so must be as that weapon was only in TTS version
Don't worry about Otacon. He gets plenty.
A surprising amount, in fact.
@@MKDumas1981 Otacon was balls deep in Emma's mom (his fathers wife) but screw Huey.
You can kill Sniper wolf also with stinger
1:00 I've always used the Nikita strat.
I use Nikitas against pretty much every boss as soon as I get them. There such a fun weapon. It's the expected way you're meant to beat Vulcan Raven, right?
Thats how I met Meryl. I knew there was a chance at the pistol before this part but I never found it. Also, this was just a couple days ago. Still on my very first play thru
Bet we didnt know? Most, if not all of these, were in strategy guides and magazines 25 years ago.
I played all the MGS games as they came out. Still have all the disks and working consoles to play them on. Considering if I should get the new collection, going to wait on the reviews!
I did not know about the parachute! Very cool
I got number 3 on my first playthrough and thought it was the normal one until now
I’ve been playing this game since 1998 and didn’t know some of those. Amazing video mate!
25 years?? I played this when it first came out. I was 24 That means I’m…f’n old.
You forgot that you can use the Cardboard box to transport snake around the base by placing him the back of the truck and choosing a box that fits the destination you wanna go to.
So for instance, if you are in the nuclear storage facility, you can travel back to the helipad by choosing box A(helipad)
After a while a guard will come by and say: Is that really all there is to load? To the helipad then.
And thus you will be able to short travel between 3 different places, Helipad, Nuclear storage Facility and the Snowfield.
Not even remotely obscure trivia
Can't travel _from_ the snowfield, though, as there are no guards walking around.
@@MKDumas1981 It still works for me, it does, at least
@@navylaks2 I've tried it. I just sat there in the box getting frostbite.
@@MKDumas1981 ok sorry can't answer that one
I just love the Original Mgs1 played it so many times simply for the story, I only ever saw a play through of Mgs2 once and I hated it, Mgs3 is sorta hit-and-miss for me but kinda fun
I own Twin Snakes and the OG PS1 version. I find myself playing the OG version more for some odd reason. I love Twin Snakes for the MGS2 playstyle but something about the original keep drawing me back.
i already knew everything in the video, but it was really entertaing nontheless! thanks for the nive and professional video bro!
It's clever for them to hide secrets that require the player to lose in order to find them.
I played more than the average kid growing up so I'm sorry to say I knew most of these. It's an old game so it's tough to find unknown facts at this point but a solid effort.
Solid effort, nice.
Liquid effort
Solidus effort.
Right after the scene without the socom pistol. Snake automatically rolls and picks one up automatically.
very cool mate, great video. I'm half way through the game again right now so good timing :)
I knew all of this except for the SOCOM custom scene! That was cool ❤
I already know all that details in the game except the Meryl infiltration suit. Good video.
Myrle is a playable character on metal gear solid this is original and real try to remember metal gear solid one original game at the time you can order the alternate version of metal gear solid from block buster video store please try to remember because America is suffering from the mental forgetful disease
In the Gamecube remake The Twin Snakes (including the North American release), Meryl will also wear a sneaking suit after the player completes both endings.
It wasn't both endings, it's just for being on the third cycle.
Does that apply to just the sneaking suit, or also the tuxedo, ninja recolor, etc? I always thought you unlocked these by completing both versions of the game (giving in vs. not giving in to the torture).
I've probably beaten this game 20 times with a mix of endings , but for the live of me didn't remember there being anything about solidus in the ending. Weird
The SOCOM-less scene feels like the more "intended" one. Like they expect players to not have a gun and the dialogue is built around it. He sounds like he's talking her down (while also belittling her a little), which he doesn't need to do if he has a pistol trained on her. He could be more aggressive if he wanted to, even mildly, but he still talks like he has a gun trained on him by someone he can't just pull the trigger on.
And also he tells her to stop thinking and shoot, but he isn't shooting either.
Yes I agree.
Whoa!! Some of these are really new to me! I can’t believe there are still things in this game i don’t know about ha wow
8:34 - 8:39 The Cyborg Ninja a.k.a. Gray Fox actually almost looks like Spider-Man with that special color scheme.
Does whatever a Cyborg Ninja can!
@@MKDumas1981 LOL That's right!
I didn't take that long getting to the elevator, and still got that dialogue.
Yea… I suck. I got the “I’m disappointed.” Dialogue with Ocelot, lmao
