Cool interview! Bjorn's a wise man. Another awesome aspect of of the viking culture were stave churches that kept detailed member records in one location. My lineage is traced back to a small village in Norway that started as a farm. According to a stave church record from the 12th century, a distant relative stopped 2 thieves who were stealing sails from a merchant vessel that was owned by a local monarch. He was granted a huge plot of land, and as smaller plots were leased out it became a village. The original farm and namesakes still exist. I did the NatGeo DNA test, and it lined up with what we knew as far as my lineage in Norway. But it also showed that my haplogroup bounced between Ireland and Scotland for several thousand years, then suddenly appeared in Norway, as if suddenly 'relocated' in the 8th-9th century.
I learned about MvH through RDO. This is actually blowing my mind right now. RUclips data crunching at its finest LOL how else can we explain the connection? Seriously, this is going to be interesting! I'm a fan of Bjorn's too. Edit: regarding the "horrible" Viking age, it's at least as horrible as any other culture around that time, likely not more. Humanity can be brutal and cruel in all it's variations.

I had to post again after listening further. The discussion on masculinity is deep. There are different angles or perspectives to consider with the decline in masculinity. One macro perspective is to consider population behavior when the population size hits a certain level. A chicken and egg metaphorical consideration. Is it an inherent property that the desire to procreate has certain limiters (cultural, individual, genetic, etc.)? There's a better question to pose here for sure.

I found your conversation around necessity for rites of passage, role models and smart phones interesting. I would tend to side with Bjorn that there is no need for a one rite of passage for men, or women for that matter. In my mind achieving masculinity/femininity is all about being comfortable to growing into "You" and being shaped into a well rounded person by accepting your part in nature through experiencing being part of that nature, through hiking/trekking/fishing/hunting/other outdoors activities. I personally don't reject smart phone since it offers a wealth of information, and can in that sense expand our understanding of our surrounding world. It all depends how you use it. I personally reject some of the social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat that only enable us to stare at the lives of our close social circle, and be advertised to. I don't think it is healthy to know all the time what your friends or relatives are doing or have bought. Especially since most people mainly share the good things and successes in their lives. This distorts our notion on what life should be as we look at our friends lives. No struggle, only new expensive clothes/gadgets/trips to foreign lands/restraunts and all the other admittedly nice things about modernity. Never porridge, always cake. This leads to jealousy and feelings of inadequacy towards your own life, and makes it hard to be satisfied with "less" and feeds the hamster wheel of eternal consumption. One has to keep up with the Joneses. As it has been studied time and time a gain there is a link between social media and anxiety and depression especially among youngsters. I teach 7-12 year olds. And if you ask the older kids "Who uses smart phones too much.? Who thinks they should use it less?" Almost all of them raise their hands. Kids are smart they know that smart phones are not healthy for them, but they don't know why. Now I come to the role models that you MVH speak about. And I would tend to agree with you here. Kids don't have good role models. They use their smart phones to look at billionaire celebrities that consume, live in urban environments, use way too much alcohol, drugs, fight, change spouses on a whim and otherwise lead lives that would land any average joe in jail. And we tell them that "This is good. This is accepted. This is desirable". People you and Bjorn probably would describe as "Boys". Of course not all of celebrities, but many of them. The children watch these people that glorify consumption, in an concrete hell environment that glorifies and is designed for consumption, on apps that are designed and glorifies consumption, and we tell them by our own actions "This is good and desirable". How far away outdoors are from this environment that we grow in? An environment where less is often more and everything you carry with you should serve a purpose. A place where the biggest questions are often the most fundamental to life. "Where to sleep, what to eat". As an environment it is antithetical to the modern consumption society devoid of those fundamental questions. So I agree with you that children, and why not adults too, need healthy role models and need to have opportunities to enjoy outdoors close to them with well rounded adults, but I personally don't think the lack of rite of passage is the main issue. The main issue in western society is our distance between more healthy "less is more" environment and mindset vs "More is more" environment and mindset. It is not a problem of manhood but a problem of personhood. On other note I personally I love these interviews/philosophical videos and they are great food for thought and "spitballing" ideas as you said.

I think most folks tend to think of a rite of passage as a single event (then poof, you're a man), rather than focused development, guided by mentors, over a decade (roughly 8/9-18/22 yrs old). Didn't have time to dive into the weeds on that during this interview with Bjorn, but Dr. Randall Eaton and I unpack the historical/ anthropological process in our interview (a couple months back) if you or any others would like to learn more about it. Regardless, the 'crisis of masculinity' today stems from several factors, so there can be several solutions to try and address different components. Just stepping back from social media, getting outdoors, and being active as a first step can go a long way towards living in tune with our design. Of course there's still much more beyond that- but it's a great place to start. Anyway, thanks again for the comment.
I need to give the Eaton interview a second listen at some point. Though just a quick note on mentors. For anyone interested (and scourging for light education philosophy books in youtube comment section) There is somewhat of a similar idea about arranging education in Rousseau's book Emilé (1762). In it he tried to argue for an alternative educational system (for the rich) beyond book smarts and "useless knowledge for knowledges sake". He argued for a mentorship that would start at the infancy and end at around -30 years old. Although the idea of mentors of course isn't by any notion a new one or his alone. In his book Rousseau describes how raising a child should be done by a mentor (of same sex). Child should experience life with his mentor, who would teach him lessons based on real life experiences. Maths should be taught by observing objects and numbers, reading other people by competing and conversing with them, relationships/talking to girls by basically being wingmaned by the mentor etc. Point being that there should be a mentor, who would aid by the wisdom granted by his age the student, through every single formative event of the child. It's surprisingly light read, being a philosophical book from that era. If anyone wants to give it a shot.
