I have 23 Founding Fathers in my ancestral tree. One of my great grandfathers and great grandmothers came to America separately from Norway and settled in a small town rich in soil. They owned a store and built coffins, etc. Neither were farmers, though they served a community of farmers. This was the late 1800s(1870ish).
This side married into a family that Founded the country, and my mother was the legacy baby. On my father's side were those who came around 1583. They were an Admiral of the Queen's Navy, sailors, ship carpenters, and investors in Jamestown.
My upbringing was based in solid principles that lead to individual freedom and self-determination. Not a bad concept for the World.
Sadly, people blame others rather than working on personal spiritual growth. Making money is rather easy--- but very soul destroying practice.

Bjorn I loved the panoramic view you did in the Spruce Forest!! Those trees are very tall!! It was very calming. And you are very correct about not having to cut trees down...They fall and sprout new trees; that's what nature does :) I have two or three knives I bring camping with me. One is an Alabama Slammer that I believe is a Bayonet; a SOG Flash II; and my Standard Black handled Army survival knife. I lost most of the things that can go inside the handle but I have the same things in my pack anyway. While you were looking around and there was NO noise I was thinking "Oh I love that silence!" and then you said "Can you hear that? It's silence!" lol

If timberlands have to pay taxes, they normally are harvested like a crop, if the government owns the land that reason is negated. But trying to return at least some portion of the acreage to native forest, instead of old commercially cultivated woodlands, is still a good idea and helpful to native species of insects/animals.

Securing the livestock in times of raiders was most important because unlike other possessions livestock carry themselves on their own feet and could be quickly taken by a few, so my guess is any fortification might have an inner keep but needed room for all the animals. That would discourage raiders from bothering those areas.

You make some very good points about knives, even more broadly tools in general. As our physical abilities change it is important to reassess the tools we use. Maybe there are tools that will allow us to continue to work in a different way. For example, I am sixty years-old and bending to pickup split firewood is becoming more strenuous, so I purchased a tool that helps me not have to bend over (logox). Adaptation to our situation(s) is the key. The "rules" for survival are very broad, the keys are to prepare enough and readily adapt to your circumstance.

Hail, my Heathen brother! Hopefully, you won't have a problem with a contained fire in the nature preserve. Damn shame about the woodlands that fell to the loggers.
I used to be a full tang or nothing kind of person, but I have seen that a sturdy "rat tail" or "bar" tang, running the length of the grip and perhaps having a tapered, functional pommel, is also quite acceptable (if done right). Full tang is better for batoning, but sturdy rat tail or bar tang hold up well. "Scandi" grind is a great all purpose edge, especially for camp knives. The somewhat coarse sharpening stones are good in the woods, where likelihood of putting a "ding" in the edge is higher.
I very much enjoy your fireside talks; good information and wisdom are always appreciated! Skål!

Great video again Bjorn, thanks for sharing your time & thoughts with us.
I bought a Mora last week (it's not the same model as yours). It looks & feels very good. It's the first knife I've bought that is actually pretty sharp, it shaved hairs off my arm out of the box! I can't wait to go into the forest & try it out.
Stay safe & I hope you find a new comfortable place in the forest soon.

Thank you for taking us along on your hike through the majestic pine forest. Are there any knives you can suggest for the women of “the tribe”?

Bjorn, clear cutting the trees is just getting rid of cover for the peppers, norm ies, and other people. The "Nature preserves" will be all that's left and those will closely monitored. And so by, easily containable. It's all by design, my friend,, all by design.

No more mighty oaks here either. Lots of them as I grew up. Now all gone.

Glad you found a wooded spot. I've started a Patreon channel, Big Creek Scenic Area, about the U.S. Forest Service Scenic Area I am the trail steward. Very basic.
    I appreciate your videos

great knife chat. i agree, the handle can make or break a knife. i prefer a thicker grip. so many knives are way too thin in the grip. I'm sure they do this to accommodate most. but that's why we have to shop around i guess.

We would do well to take some notes on how our ancestors defended themselves. Taking such defensive positions may be necessary in the future.

If you can get your hands on an LT Wright knife, they have full, comfortable handles that would suit your condition and large hands.

Many times I said Mora makes good knives, or puukko's, and some laugh at me saying no. It should be something like very expensive Tommi-puukko from Kainuu or Roselli and carbon steel, but not even Marttiini, because they are not good at all. Some say blade should be the width of your palm. I think good is that what feels goog in your hand.

I'll say it again. The previous area is not destroyed. It will grow back. That is not my opinion. That's fact. It just might take longer than you would like, which is relatable.
I'm pro conservation and pro logging. They don't have to be mutually exclusive. They definitely aren't for many many people, especially where we I come from where we love loggers and forest rangers and despise poachers more than anything. Moderation and regulating is important and setting aside wilderness areas is definitely a good thing. I value an untamed wilderness too. But when I see a logging site, I don't see devastation. I see logging. There is a big difference. I see eye to eye with you on many things, but when it comes to logging I see you as an impractical NIMBY (not in my back yard). But I'm sure you have maybe heard that before, so I would like to hear you speak to that. Is it ever ok to log? Is there a particular method of logging that you prefer? Or are you really just against using wood? Do you think we should stop having kids and lower our population until the Earth is a wild place again? Or is it purely an emotional thing and you get that it is required to some level, but you never enjoy seeing it, regardless of how practical and necessary it might be, so you believe it should be minimized as much as possible and that is not what you are seeing? I sincerely believe in conservation and enjoy the woods in many of the same ways as you and I think it is important to have these kind of conversations that put real quantitative numbers to attainable goals and visions so we can arrive at least to some understanding of each other for moving into the future.
I think both you and I have one thing in common which is that we dream of how awesome it would be to live in a wilder time when the human population of the world didn't have the volume or the tools to so easily level and destroy and each man had to use everything, his wits, strength, spirit, and perseverance in order to thrive and explore in the wilderness. Because of that, when one did thrive and explore it was much more gratifying and created a strong bond with the spirit of living and nature and the surroundings. But those days are over and we now need to constantly consider how much we can do before it is too much and temper our abilities while we think about how we can preserve while still partaking in creating that bond. So practical conversations, not just philosophical and emotional ones, need to be made and the art of having those conversations must evolve beyond what we have today.
