Anyone who buys ammo on a regular basis knows that Underwood ammo gives you the best bang for your buck among premium ammunition. Thanks for doing this test. Keep the 10mm tests coming!
Thank you for watching! Got a few more good 10mm tests coming
@@thegundungeon you should do a 10mm hollow point one, I’d like to see Gold dot vs Federal HST
Agreed! 👍
Gold dot is trash, HST is the only one I’d ever carry as an off duty policeman. Gold dot expansion is mild at best
You can even buy your own and let them up really hot.
Damn, you found apples-to-apples matching ammo types between Underwood & Buffalo Bore! ...This is gonna be a dank ass comparison video!
Lol thank you, hope you enjoy!
Underwood and Buffalo bore are both fantastic, you cant go wrong with either of them.
A very nicely done and informative video! I like that you had everything prepared and ready to go; no fumbling nor delays: nor did you waste time with unnecessary talk. The penetration, chronograph and cost factors are all there for us to make our decision.
I live in black bear country and carry a 10mm and a 41 magnum when in the woods. I use underwood and not because it is so much better but because it is cheaper. deer hunt with the 41 and it has never let me down. great video good to see an apple to apple comparison. be safe
Perfect big boy test!! I can never find Underwood in my area, but I do occasionally find Buffalo Bore. I seriously think one cannot go wrong with either!
I rarely see it local, I just buy online most of the time
Great video! Thank you, sir.
This should be a great test! Good idea matching these up
I hope you enjoy it!
Good info. Thanks for putting this test together!
Both the Underwood and Buffalo bore are in a class of their own. When it comes down to wood protection, you're covered. I have a .40 cal S&W and a 9mm H&K I take with me to the outdoors of Colorado loaded with Underwood. I plan on getting some Buffalo Bore so I can have my spare magazines loaded with both. Nice video. I thought the 147 gr was going to underperform velocity wise, but I was pleasantly surprised. Good stuff!
Thanks for the video!!!
I am becoming a Underwood fan!
Good quality and performance for the money!
It’s a great value for sure!
Great test. Love me some underwood ammo, never have ponied up for the buffalo bore.
I’ll probably stick to underwood
I’ve never used either of them but from everything I’ve seen both seem to be great premium ammo. Probably gonna buy some of the Underwood soon over the Buffalo Bore just because the Underwood seems to be priced a bit better.
I have noticed that under wood semi auto cartridges are hotter than BB but BB revolver cartridges are hotter.
Might have to test further with these
And hotter not just a little but usually 200+ fps
As far as the box numbers go, I’ve always noticed that as well.
I’m a fan of both companies
Interesting, thank you!
Wow, for us in Alaska you are posting much needed content. I've always wondered how these would compare and how much penetration a 9mm would get. Most RUclips channels will put one, maybe two gel blocks back-to-back and then throw a bunch of water jugs behind them. Not a consistent medium, way too high of a chance of a bullet going wary, and just not as "scientific" as your methods. This is especially helpful for those shooters who maybe can't handle the recoil of a 10mm or stronger, so knowing 9mm hard cast can still get the job done is very needed. Thanks Gun Dungeon.
Thank you for the kind words, hope you continue to enjoy the content!
Many gun channels get the same results ----- for revolver ammo it's Buffalo Bore all the way --- for auto ammo Underwood loads their ammo a tiny bit hotter BUT Buffalo Bore's hard cast bullets are harder than Underwood's hard cast bullets -- However I seriously doubt any deer or bear will know the difference in hardness! In Alaska the B.B. 357 mag seems a far better choice with harder bullets and 147 fps faster --- could make the difference with a thousand pound grizzly.
Good test THANKS.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Sweet video brah, all around 😎👍🏽
Awesome test man, very interesting. Also sweet 75 you got there sir!
Thank you!
Enjoyable and informative video👍
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Great test. I think if the 1st test with Underwood 9mm didn't hit the table, it might penetrate the 3rd gel block all the way through as well.
Underwood is one of the best most constant ammo on the market for the price i carry Underwood in my home defense AR all my pistols.
EXCELLENT VIDEO. ILL STICK with Buffalo Bore. Especially if it is hollow point bullets. Underwood uses Nosler bullets that mushroom too quickly and don't penatrate near as deep as I prefer. Buffalo Bore uses XTP from Hornady.
Looking forward to this slugfest!
I don’t think I’ve seen the two compared back to back in more than one flavor in any videos. Hope everyone enjoys
excellent video
I like CZ and XDM.
Me too! CZ is my favorite handgun maker
As per usual, Underwood falls shy of Buffalo Bore in rimmed revolver loads, whereas they typically excel in rimless semi-auto loads.
The 180gr Buffalo Bore .357 magnum gave you 4-inch L-frame published data velocity, from your 4-5/8-inch SAA.
4:50 Gel Bock Jerry is so unimpressed that he fell asleep
Lol 😂 hard cast don’t give him much a workout
Out of curiosity I looked up 'most powerful' brands because this year RUclips has been sticking random wilderness defense videos into my other channel's feed for reasons unknown, from months to 12 years ago. Thanks to you I know now this Buffalo Bore is fantastic .... but too fantastic to use in defense toward another human being. Big chonkin' bear? Sure. Moose? Likely. Maaaaybe if there are 3 bad guys standing in a row. No need for overpenetration + collateral damage!
I'll stick to what's in my stockpile now. Here's hoping it never has to be used. (Knocks on desk)
Good review. Both manufacturers produce suitable woods loads. It is interesting to note that the Winchester 9mm M1152 115 gr FNJHP will also penetrate 48" of clear ballistics gel. It's a fairly hot load and zips right on through. It's cheaper, too. Does that make it a great bear defense load?...
Personally if I’m using a hard cast as defense, I want the widest, flattest front area on the bullet I can get. Even though these rounds all penetrated sufficiently, I’d still carry my 44 mag with a 310g gas checked handload.
I dont blame you. Of those you tested, the 10mm is the best.
Since my baseline is 22 Stinger, any of these are huge upgrades, and price dies pay a big role. I really want to learn more about the new milspec Winchester 9mm...and what pistols can cope with it.
It's not strange that the slower bullets went deeper, look up Garrett ammo hammer heads 45-70 they can out penatrate a 458wm because the speed of the mag is used as energy
Nice test TGD on the same bullet weights. Penetration is impressive, yet this isn't the type of ammunition to be used in a closley populated area. Good bear round though.
Oh yeah definitely not for two legged defense. This video was a request from some members on the highroad forum, that’s why I did hard cast
I think for what you're getting, underwood is a far far better deal. I have underwood in some mags and cylinders and buffalo bore in the others. My 2 favorite brands, cant go wring with either but i lean toward underwood because of the price point. I also like those nickle casings too. Haha
I didn't know Underwood Ammo querido 147 grain flat nose + P ammo until someone tell me about it on another site. I've been trying to get some Buffalo Bore for a year. I'm in North Carolina and I carry a 9 mm everywhere. If I go down in the woods I put the 147 grain flat nose Underwood Ammo in whatever I'm toting. I've never carried a full size. I've got a Ruger MAX 9 that I usually carry. We have coyotes Wild Hogs despite what people think we have mountain lions also and a few blackbear. You can never dismiss the random Sasquatch either.
I want some 44 mag action for the squatch’s!! Lol 😂
As a reloader of over 44years of knowledge, experience of many calibers I know hard cast bullets, even those with 22to 24 brinnel hardness factor have usefulness with the right application. many people want to super charge there ammunition. but hard cast bullets can be pushed two fast and break up. unless person doesn't live around anyone these type bullets should only be use for its intended purpose. these 3 test calibers would have no problem shooting through my old wood frame house with lap German pine siding.to each there own options. I greatly enjoyed the video. Papa wishing you well 😊
👏 amazing
Great test. Unly issue here i see as you as handloader can loads same loads ur self with hard cast bullets. Cw sent me bunch in .401 to load for 40s&w to make own outdoors man. Have check nickel brass lot of it is regular brass with s coating over it.
I typically do roll my own, this video was done per request from some members on the highroad forum.
@@thegundungeon good video for some to look at that don't reload. Alaskan Ballistics in chukes outdoors both done lot testing for bear defense with them.
Underwood a little better with semiauto, Buffalo Bore is the wheelgun ammo king.
May have to test that theory lol 😂
Good ammo for being In the woods. Definitely not a home defense choice in any of them. If I was camping or on the trail Definitely good choice but I'm going with the BB 357
Wish you showed the recoil of each round, that is another important deciding factor.
Stout… just know that lol 😂
Good stuff. I don't think either one will be a bad choice. How many blocks would you need to catch those projectiles?
I’m not sure but the odds of me being able to place shots that stay straight for 4 blocks is very low lol 😂
20% gel may help catch them. Dont know for sure, clear ballistics gel advertises it as such.
Usually takes 6 blocks to catch the 10mm
There’s not enough of a difference to make a difference between the two companies to justify the expense of BB over UW. And as you said, UW provides nickel plated cases over brass. While brass is fine, nickel is better (and costs more).
Kinda where I stand on it too
❤ a big powerful handgun rounds are cool but if I'm in Bear Country I'd rather have a rifle under my arm
Yes sir or a 12g slug lol
I own an M&P 10mm and just wanted to know, how far were you shooting from?
No more than 7 yards and no less than 4. Best I can tell ya lol.
I don't have much hard cast ammo. Only two boxes in 9 mm for when I go in areas there night be predetory animals. And both boxes are Buffalo Bore.
Actually not that I think about I might have one box of underwood ammo in 9mm. 😅
Any of them will do the job. In a self defense situation.
Glad you didn't use the 45acp +p255 gr hardcast, would have made the other calibers look like jokes!!! 2 world wars!!!
Lol 😂
Looks like good zombie stoppers.
Zombie griz lol
Im sticking with buffalo bore, no hate for the underwood though.
Were the recovered bullets still normal looking or had they mushroomed at all?
They were all hard cast, no deformation in the gel.
High powered ammo is of course totally overpriced. Those couple of grains of more powder cost pennies!
You’re correct. Another reason to be a hand loader lol.
The 125 Buffalo bore is much hotter in the 357 , that’s where the 357 shines
Just about every test I've seen on Underwood Ammo throughout different calibers the velocity on the box has been understated, it actually performes above stated velocity. Not too impressive here for whatever reason
In the area where I live underwood is quite a bit more expensive than the buffalo bore, go figure.
An often overlooked 3rd comparable option IMO is doubletap ammunition. They have very similar advertised velocities and loadings to Underwood and BB.
Seems like I used to hear a lot more from double tap. I hardly ever see their stuff anymore.
@@thegundungeon They used to have sales all the time pre covid, I used to buy from them a lot. Their 9mm+P gold dot load has as much velocity as UW's and BB's 9mm+P+ loads do.
Doubletap seems to have somehow slipped through the cracks of gun guys consciousness, but they are still around and it is still really good ammo.
A couple of old phone books will catch those bullets for you.
I thought about adding another block but the odds of me placing a shot that stays straight that long is low lol 😂
@@thegundungeon
A cardboard box filled with newspaper would work too.
Interestingly, 380+P 100gr hard cast from Underwood and BB also penetrates 40".
That’s insane lol 😂
This test shows that even a 9mm with that kind of penetration would be plenty enough for bear defense.
Hard casts dig deep lol
Go try it! 🤣
@@peterdarlington4117 I'll pass lol
Would love to see this repeated with short barrels
I’ll add it to my video list lol
With hard cast (10mm anyway) you’ll get essentially the same penetration performance from say a 3.8 inch barrel as you’d get from a 5 in.
Underwood is loaded to saami specs AND is uniformly more accurate than buffalo bore, accordingly.
Deff not a big enough diff for the money.
That’s my thoughts as well.
Bringin' the heat today boys!
Lol hitting the wallet hard for this one too! 😂
@@thegundungeon Buffalo Bore is NOT cheap, that's for sure!
If anyone breaks into my home, they will meet the Buffalo out of a Smith classic 586-2 😂
You hit the table, you should of redone.. Test in 9mm is no test
FJB
The 125g 357mag Buffalo bore has more energy than any of their 10mm rounds
Grunts and groans and sound effects dude you could do without
