Was camping in Montana 13 years ago. Camping by tailgate of a pickup truck. Was walking back from the stream after washing pots and pan. Saw a huge bear near my truck, I froze for 1-2 minutes feeling my heart race and pound through my chest. I hit the remote panic button on my key fob. Horn honking scared that 600-700 bear and the speed was incredible at which he ran. Still remember his back fat and sides jiggling as he ran. It was about about 60 degrees out, I was soaked from sweat and took 15 minutes to come to normal resting heart rate. Yes I had a side arm. Been a cop 20 years and in some very scary situations. By far this bear had the most profound impact on my nervous system. Had to pee so bad afterwards.

That’s probably plenty for my neck of the woods. Capacity is probably more important for me than lots of penetration considering a pack of coyotes is probably my biggest woods threat. The occasional black bear but not many of those and they aren’t huge.

@@thegundungeon Yeah I'd bet you could penetrate a coyote nose to tail with that load. The way it penetrated frozen bone and flesh makes me believe it should also be able to penetrate black bear bones and skull. It may be the smallest cal I'd use but 9mm has gotten the job done before on bears. However, given the choice, Id rather use 1 of my 44 mags. I was treed by an enormous (500+lb) black bear once at our cabin while bow hunting and thats something you dont forget. Bears in our area of northern WI average 400+lbs. Our largest bears go well over 600lbs. WHen I was treed I tapped my release on my bow, clanged it against the treestand and yelled at the bear and all he did was get in a push up position and huf at me. at 15 yards I didnt want to shoot him with my bow or my Glock 40 S&W with 180gr FMJ so I shot 1 round into the ground and he lumbered away into the ferns and layed down . I had to walk within 30 feet of him to get back to the cabin and that was the last time I went out in the woods without 1 of my 44's. My primary carry ammo fof street defense and home defense is 124+p Speergolddot and 180 HST and 180 Speergolddot. I shoot at the range what i carry so those are my ammo choices pretty much. Your ammo choices resemble my own. Gold dot and hst is where it’s at. I do tend to go a little lighter on 40 when I’m carrying my shield. Overall great video. Would have loved to have seen a couple shots thru the chrono and see how close you were getting to the published velocity, but whatever the velocity, the penetration is the more important thing. One other point: For woods defense I have a Glock 20 which shoots the larger heavier 10mm hardcast projectile. My issue is while it packs more of a punch than the 9mm I can get more shots down range in a shorter amount of time with my 9mm than the 10mm. Kind of makes it hard to choose between the two.

I've seen many different videos where people using the same ammo would have different results. Looks like all 3 shots hit bone. But with one exiting both blocks, and one only making it 10 inches, to me at least it indicates inconsistency in the load itself. To the best of my understanding a hard cast isn't supposed to flatten out like that even if it does hit bone. @@thegundungeon This one I see lol. The reason I asked for such a video is because unfortunately many times a round falls short of it's advertised capability. I have seen many videos and read many stories complaining about the over penetration of fmj projectiles. But it seems to me that's exactly what one would want when defending against a large nasty animal. Also Nate on the tools and targets channel does slot of good penetration tests. Normally an average 9mm round nose will out penetrate any 380 round nose fmj. On one such test he pitted a 380 flat nose fmj against a round nose 9mm fmj. Much to my surprise the 380 flat bested the 9mm round by a good 6-8 inches. He then tried a 9mm flat against a 9mm round nose and the flat easily won. So there is something about a flat nose. That said I'm no expert but from what I've seen it seems that what most consider to be cheap range ammo could serve well for bear defense because of the penetration at a fraction of the cost of round like underwood or buffalo bore hard cast. Then again I'm not going out of my way to out myself in bear country and actually have to find out lol

I think it's a much needed test and I'm glad you're doing it, and I don't want to come across as a troll, but ideally the medium should NOT be FROZEN. Frozen bone and flesh become brittle, which is not really representative of the intended test. That bear in the wilderness will not have a frozen chest and ribcage, no matter how cold it is outside. I still think this particular load would perform, but that's just a guess. As shown, the conclusions are not valid, IMHO. I know it's not that simple to re-make a video, it takes a lot of effort, time and setup, so I don't mean this disrespectfully or casually. I did carry a similar Underwood load in 40S&W in northern Minnesota woods and figured there's no grizzlies there, so I'm probably ok, considering I also have my deer rifle. And a more compact version as shown would be very practical. I hope no offense is taken.

Almost any self defense shooting situation will involve a warm blooded target, so I don't see the reason of using a frozen meat/bone target. A meat/bone target at room temperature would be a closer representation of an actual target, instead of a frozen one. Just sayin'…

I sure hope I never have to defend from anything frozen and coming at me lol 😂. I just did frozen to add to the hardness of the target.

@@thegundungeon IMHO the frozen medium makes the target more brittle and easier to penetrate. Brittleness is a separate quality from hardness. Diamonds are the hardest substance in universe, but you can easily smash it with a common hammer into many shards. Again, I don't want to sound like I'm nit-picking, I know it takes a lot of work to set these up. Just in the interest of knowledge :)

@languagesource355 he's testing penetration, specifically of a hard cast bear defense type round. The most important factor is if it can go through a bear-thickness skull. A frozen piece of meat and bone is easier to find than a bear skull to shoot. Your hard is brittle argument is silly. Ar 500 steel is hardened and ceramic armor plates are hard, both are higher rated than soft kevlar body panels. Ice can be broken with a hammer, but so can water, and anyone can swing a hammer through way more water than ice. Heck even your example. How thick of a diamond do you thing you can shatter with a hammer, 3 feet thick, how about even 3 inches? What's a less dense and softer form of carbon (the element that diamonds are made of)? Dry ice, and i can break that up with my hands. Your argument doesn't hold any water and is simply silly.

It's about the only thing 9mm is good for uneventful holes through things and full auto fire from a SMG but for self defense 9mm is terrible choice

Hard cast vs hard cast, non expanding, it seems it would be at least in the same ballpark as 357 mag, probably lacking some penetration considering higher velocity of 357, but if you want more damage with hard cast you have to start out with a wider bullet.
