Hey Roy, with the DPMS rifle being in the news lately, I would love to hear your's and @PaulHarrell opinion on them. My first AR was a DPMS and I do still have it and still use it regularly for coyotes and such. It wasn't cheap when I bought it back in early 2000's but most people talk about it being an inferior, low end rifle. Thanks!

Great job, humorous and yet respectful. Once upon a time I shot .380 in an East German Makarov. I noted that the report was louder and there seemed to be more blow back out of the ejection port. I also noticed that the recoil felt snappier or sharper but the striking power against plates and pins seemed less. I also saw the bulged cases, but my memory was that the bulging was around the entire case and about half between the front and back of the case.
My father who was with me at the time told me that it was probably not a good idea to continue firing the .380 and that I was risking damaging the gun. So, here we are decades later and your video and technology, which I didn't have access to and some of which didn't exist, has verified mine and my father's observations. Thank you.

Nice work. I've been watching Paul for years too and though I've been teaching firearms since 1980, I learned something new, well, new to me anyway, from every video and passed them on to my friends. Likewise, in this video, I didn't know that there was a bullet diameter difference of 2mm between these two calibers. That is actually a fairly substantial difference and another reason why you should only use the right size ammunition for the firearm you have.
Along the lines of your anecdote, I was a weapons instructor in the Air Force when we still carried revolvers. Most of us carried either S&W model 10 or model 15. But the ammo we were issued was a special load developed for the military called PGU-12. It was a 130 gr. FMJ that was seated low in the case and it was HOT! So hot that we were constantly having to tighten screws on the guns and replace missing thumb pieces and rear sight assemblies that would fall off due to the screws being backed out from the vibrations under recoil. PGU-12 was nearly as powerful as a .357 magnum...nearly.

PPU has the "Defense" line JHP load which is affordable, findable, and well-made, but Buffalo Bore also makes a very nice 9x18 +P JHP.
Although for the Buffalo Bore, I highly suggest using a new recoil spring; or at least make sure the original is still springy for any amount of continuous shooting. It's a stout round, and your hand will definitely feel it after a few strings of fire; especially with a worn/weak recoil spring. It's also more expensive, but for self-defense it's worthwhile imo.
My standard practice for carry is to load the first 6-7 rounds with PPU JHP, then top it off with Buffalo Bore (plus one in the pipe); therefore the first 2-3 rounds fired will be the +P wallopers.

As a RevolverGuy myself, if it's marked as a Model 36, it's 100% safe to fire +P ammo through. +P ammo has been around a lot longer than most people think. However, I still wouldn't necessarily recommend it, because with a fixed sight J-Frame, even most modern ones, you'll hit between 4 and 8 inches low at 10 yards, depending on exact velocity and bullet weight. They're sighted for standard velocity 158 gr ammo, so youll be hitting much closer to point of aim with a 148 gr wadcutter.

Perhaps this will help my fellow Mak enthusiasts; I produce my 9x18 brass by cutting down abundant fired 9mm Luger to .700. Run the case through 9x18 sizer, recheck for nominal OAL, then load with .361-362 bullets. Load moderate charges, 92-94% of full power for thr first firing of these cases; the web and base of a 9mm Luger is slightly smaller diameter than 9x18 but it will expand and form fit to your chamber. What matters is the case mouth sits where it should against the bore and seals the breech. These cut down cases can be re-used many times, 9mm Luger specs at 30-33K psi where 9x18 is going to run in the 20-22K. I invested in a 9x18 die set and a .362 105gr bullet mold; i will never have a problem making ammo for my Makarov. Hope that helps someone
