That’s really shocking with the FMJ! Good stuff my friend! Looks like your carry load performed well!
That handload is a brute lol
Most people spend way to much on "Bear loads" when most fmjs are the best way to go and don't foul the barrel and you can handload fmjs for more speed
I used to carry Underwood 147 grain plus P+ when I lived in Bear Country.
I don’t know that I saw the plus p +. I’ll have to look
@@thegundungeon They might not make it anymore. IIRC it was a 147gr flat nose TMJ at 1185fps.
@@thegundungeon Bro i just saw a GRIZZLY ammo load that is 124gr+P+ FMJ-FN at FOURTEEN HUNDRED (1400) fps!!! that's 540 foot pounds!!!
WTH!?!?
@@Valorius isn’t that 9mm major territory?
@@thegundungeon I think so, yeah. The stuff was only about 50 cents per round too. Crazy. (ammoseek)
I'm not surprised that the fmj out did the hard cast, and at a fraction of the cost. But what did surprise me was the level of penetration the jhp got. I would have thought 8 inches at best after hitting the bone
Would have been interesting to see what a hollow point cast projectile could have done. I cast up a MP 124.360 the mold shipped with 3 pin sets. 2 of the 3 create a hollow point 1 is your standard hollow point and the other makes a octagon shape hollow point or what MP calls a penta point. That ones expansion is interesting to say the least it literally opens like a flower 🌸.
Excellent video! I would love to see the same test with 10mm flat nose fmj vs hard cast. If they had similar velocities it would make a really good comparison.
Great video. Would like to see a 124 grain or 147 grain flat nose test.
That was pretty good. Appreciate the video and all the time and effort that goes onto it.
For 9mm I carry a 158gn JHP that is right in the 980 to 990 fps (4") range. Been pretty happy with the penetration and expansion I get with them.
That’s a heavy boy for 9mm. It sounds awfully similar to a 38 special/357 mag bullet lol.
@@thegundungeon Oh it is. Resized. Got into running them when I started using .357 bullets for my 9x23 Win, 9x25 Dillons & 357 SIGs. They handle the higher velocities far better than the vast majority of .355" bullets. Resizing the 158 makes it a bit easier to load up in 9mm.
@@Matteo_ that makes a lot of sense
@@thegundungeon Certainly simplifies component orders. 😂 I predominantly shoot 38. So powder primer and bullets are the same for my 38 & 9mm.
Good shooting. I bounce between 115g and 124g hp out of a G2C millennium P111. I have not attempted +p yet. I like the bone test it shows what they will do and penetration. Good test sir.
Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Looks like I should start carrying FMJ'S for wilderness defense.
Thanks for the video!
Thank you!
Thank you!!!
Surprised the fmj and even more so with the hollow point. As my carry is gold dot 124s your research further cements my choice of a 124 grn hp as the best all around. Thanks.
I’ve always hung around the 124gr in 9mm. Seems to be a good compromise for weight and still get decent velocity.
Also for animal defense typical 10mm or .40 FMJ has a flat point so both penetrate super far and I'd rock a .40 fmj-fp in Moose/Bear country and not worry
I’d have to go a long way from home to be in moose or bear country. Biggest woods threat we have is a pack of hungry yotes
I'm not surprised the fmj out did the hard cast, seen it before. But what DOES surprise me, in a good way, was the level of penetration the hp got after it expanded. I would have expected 8 inches. but at the end of the day I stick with fmj which does as good or better than hp's in a lot of instances for a mere fraction of the cost
Very interesting!
Thank you for watching!
Nice performance for 2legged from your handload! For Animal Defense on cheap I sent Gun Sam the super HOT Winchester M1152 round penetrates super far...the similar slightly less hot "Military Grade" w same 115 Flat Point should do well but bit less you could try. I'm hoping yo get some Fiocchi JHPs to Test!
Very good results. Kind all perform about the same . Think get into 45 cal 10mm or 40s&w or 357 and up it will change.
Gonna have to try and see now
Headed to bear country soon, this could not have been posted at a better time 🍻 cheers
Have a good time!
I wanna see 45acp fmj vs 9mm fmj vs bone now !!! You could definitely make a lot of versus's videos like that!!!
Could be a series lol
@@thegundungeon I'm not opposed to it!!!
Now you're just looking for a fight ...😆
Good compariteve test1👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
I live in bear country. I was curious about this exact thing. Thanks
Hope I could help. I plan to do more with this concept with some rounds that have a little more oomph to em.
@@thegundungeon definitely helped. I look forward to more on the topic
A truncated cone FMJ might be interesting.
I enjoy all your videos, but this one was closer to home for me. I load the magazines of my 9mm EDC with FMJ and JHP. The first two rounds 115 grain FMJ, the third round 124 grain JHP HST and alternating after that. (I don't know if that's a weird thing to do.) I liked seeing the penetration of the FMJ after going through bone and I'm glad you included the results from the hollow point as well. Why do I alternate? If I ever have to face anything, I don't know what it might be so I feel I'm better prepared. Either way, your test showed that both rounds are sufficient for my intentions.
I know several people that alternate rounds in the mag, I’d suggest running a few mags with however you stack them just to be sure feeding isn’t going to be affected, I doubt it would be but different overall length rounds in the mag poses just enough curiosity in my mind where I’d want to make sure it isn’t going to be an issue.
@@thegundungeon I’ll definitely be doing that. I initially had an issue with the JHP in the Canik METE MC9. Manually pulling the slide back and letting it go the rounds would jam up against the feed ramp. Regular FMJ didn’t have that issue. The hollow points weren’t catching on the edge of the feed ramp. Just jamming up right in the center. After a second or two, pressure from the recoil spring shoved the round into the chamber. I resolved the issue by polishing the feed ramp to a mirror finish, but it does need a live fire test. I’ll be testing with a mag of JHP and then one with alternating rounds. (I compared the feed ramp on the Canik with my Glock 19 - which didn’t have this issue with the JHP - and found that the feed ramp on the Glock had slightly more angle. That steeper feed ramp on the Canik allowing the JHP to jam against it.)
@@pinballrick6031 this is why it’s always a good idea to run a steady diet of your carry ammo through your defensive gun. Another reason I carry my own reloads, cheaper to train with plus I KNOW for a fact every primer has compound and an anvil, every case has powder, etc.
These 9 mm FMJs have thinner jacket than FMJ rifle bullets. Maybe softer too
I’d like to see the same test with the Buffalo Bore version of the cast load. Underwood’s cast bullets seem to deform a lot more than their claimed BHN suggests. My suspicion is that their bullets get annealed during the coating process.
Very well could be. I’d like to do a revolver cartridge with Buffalo bore though. Seems like their revolver rounds out do their semi auto rounds.
@@thegundungeon I’ve chronographed their 180 grain.357 magnum cast load, but never taken any game with their stuff. I did punch one of my home cast .44 magnum bullets completely through a 350 pound hog. BHN 15 with a really wide nose.
Maybe a flat nose FMJ, might even be more mushroomed?
Very well could be. I was kinda shocked how they turned out with almost the same shape
I don't want to get shot by any of them
Me either buddy.
A surprising test result for sure. Perhaps the bone seriously affected the outcome. I've seen tests with plain gel where FMJ tends to go several inches further than JHP, but the hard cast goes even deeper. Though I've always wondered how much better a FMJ would do if it was flat nose and had as hot of a powder charge that is typical with many of these hard cast bullets.
Like Winchester's M1152
@@rob6850 Yes
@@cgsimons1187 might as well throw in American Eagle 147 grain and Federal's 150 grain flat nose Syntech to test other factors too 🙂
The bone definitely had an impact. The distortion of the fmj most likely created more frontal surface area which would decrease penetration the same as a hollow point expanding.
I was not expecting the fmj to get that far. Even the hollow point. Surprise. With that said, i still will carry 147 gr hardcast with me to go trout fishing.
Great video. Is there a discount for vedder?
Unfortunately not at this time. Supposed to be coming though
Do you think the hard cast bullet contacting the table may have limited it’s penetration?
Nah there was still gel under the hard cast but of course bullet removal was in the clip I lost lol
Interesting, wonder if they make a hard cast wrapped in copper, thanks!
That’s an interesting concept
Rmr bullets make a 124, and 115 target bullets that are truncated cone. They are really accurate and have a nice thick jacket. I’ve thought of developing a load of my own with some aa #7 at plus p loads
I missed this expectation with the hardcast. I expected most of both blocks. I am personally unimpressed. If I was using this for big animal defense expecting extra penetration I would be disappointed. In fact, I would think a hot 124 fmj would be more adequate. I know hard cast 44 magnum penetration is much greater than typical hollow points. Thank you for demonstration.
May have to slap a 44 hard cast and fmj in the next one. Edit: may need more gel lol 😂
@@thegundungeon 240s might not clear 2 blocks, depending on loading. But 270s, 290, 305s plow through a lot of material and various media. Sand/dirt slows them down but not much else.
Gel tests, but with bones
The meat aisle isn’t safe around here lol 😂
I'm confused. It isn't hard cast unless you can dig it out of a log and shoot it again. What is Underwood doing? Thanks for the vid.
Bone is much harder than log. This is pretty typical performance for hard cast against a tough bone. Even the big 44’s will deform somewhat in heavy bone
@thegundungeon A rib bone is harder than a 20" log? That buck must have been eating a lot of iron supplements.
@@doghousedon1 hardness is a legit form of measurement, not just a fly by term, as far as cross sectional density is concerned bone is harder than most wood. Brinell is the most commonly used form of measurement for measuring actual hardness, bone would be much higher than essentially any wood except maybe petrified wood.
Bump
I thought you would have a chicken behind the ribs. Good video though.
lol we got some chicken videos coming very soon
Much less difference than I expected in the 3
Same for me
