Pump or Semi Auto Shotgun for Defense?
Thnx for the vid and your time! Love from Alaska!
I'm not surprised that the fmj out did the hard cast, and at a fraction of the cost. But what did surprise me was the level of penetration the jhp got. I would have thought 8 inches at best after hitting the bone
just by looking an guessing the two chickens look like there about 8 inches in penetration i think the 380 acp did great just my 2 cents lol
Those 357 SIG bullets numbers and lbs are outstanding but getting effective energy delivery from them is another thing. Even barrel twist is important. I bet a very fast and very fast spinning JHP copper bullet is the key. The thing is since corbun invented that famous DPX no major improvement were made. The petals just break at 1450 feet/ second. Rifle copper doesn’t break at 2500 feet/ second. WTF improve that lazy attitude. There is much potential left. Even S&B has better copper JHP 9 mm in 2024.
Something hit me during the intro. The 300 Blackout case is about half way between .44-40 and .30-30 in terms of barely having a bottleneck/shoulder. Both of those cartridge date back to the 19th Century 😜
Unfortunately so many of these have garbage POA POI... At seven and even five yards... Mine from the bench proves I'll need to aim at the perps top left shoulder to POI at center mass sternum... So many have issues that Ruger violated their own policies of not sending out parts to people... They decided the were bleeding out money so much that they are willing to send complete slides and barrels out to help mitigate their money loss from their technicians handling all of them... 🤷♂️... and mine is the newest iteration being the 75th Anniversary stainless steel model....and pretty much no reason to hope it'll be fixed sending it in... This problem persists since it was released, so years now... People say "send it in Ruger has the best CS" ... but why ? If they can fix them after the fact why can't they ship them out in working order... I honestly think people that say their POA POI is golden just really haven't noticed just how terrible these guns are...😒
The most interesting new technology I have heard of recently is the extremely fast twist barrels on the 8.6 blackouts, but I don't have any experience with it. It might just be pure hype. You can test it for us. It's an excuse to get another gun.
If you only get 5 make it 5 artillery shells!
lol 😆
That’s a good gun. Pocket rocket lol.
The Intro is so Texas that my neighbors upstairs started a rodeo.
I completely agree. I LOVE shooting my revolvers (and reloading for them) but I would not consider them the best choice for self defense (maybe bear defense? but there is a strong case for 10mm there). Between revolver weight, capacity, and the heavy trigger in DA, I cannot see that a revolver is a "better" choice over a semi. All that said, if that's what you have/want, I'm all for it, but you need to train for it. My wife once asked if she would be better off with a revolver, so this very conversation has been had at home! Thanks for generating the discussion here.
Regardless of your choice of firearm training and being familiar with its use is of the utmost importance. Whatever you decide to carry you need to be comfortable with to the point that you don't have to think about it in a high stress situation.
Hey bro just found your channel don't want to see you get in trouble with the Democratic power to be RUclips they're giving out strikes for people mentioning sponsors
Yeah, piss on em
Spent a lot of time and thousands of rounds learning to hip shoot revolvers. so far as.. fast.... the first shot is the one that counts so the guy who gets off that shot the fastest with a hit wins... the time it takes to actually bring the gun up to the sight plane is wasted on anything shorter than say 10-15 feet.... after that (short range) point shooting is next best. saves time.. and is more of the take your time in a hurry thing. learning DA for me and those I take out shooting is pretty easy. I have even seen brand new shooters do better DA than SA...has to do with anticipation I think. One thing to remember is that the SAA from 1873 is still the fastest from the holster to the first shot of any handgun... pretty good record.
My nightstand gun is a Colt SAA clone in 44 spl. there is no need for the sights at any range in my home. and they point better than anything else. Now my 69 python or even my 629 have such good DA that often I can do better DA but for long range (50-150 yards) I go for the single action mode. I actually don't even think of defense. I am familiar with all my handguns so can use any of em. I hate snakes... and where I live there are tons of the nasty things. when I come up on one 4' away or less all acting mean? I am freaked out but so far no matter what handgun I have it just comes natural for me.... I think 9 times out of ten in such a situation I actually do cock the DA gun anyway. J frames,... they get a bad rap but I have owned dozens of em. hint... they all shoot the same...meaning point of aim. they are plenty good to hit a man sized target 5 out of 5 at 100 yards .. yeah I know but try it. Semi autos... pretty much I am gonna stick with sa like the 1911 which also..... points extremely well. Something like my PPK tho the DA is useful.
I've been wanting to get my hands on a 357sig for a while now. My local shop doesn't carry anything in that caliber. The owner said it's too expensive and nobody buys em. I'm super sad about it, lol.
@@andrewmontemurro7958 online is the way lol
Pocket 357mag power .
Really enjoyed your video. Glock 29 is one of my CCWs. The only thing is that you should not use an aftermarket barrel for 2 legged critters. For bear and other wildlife absolutely. But soon as a prosecutor sees that it's been switched, it opens a whole new can of worms. You shouldn't ever need an AMB for defense. Just wouldn't want you all to go through the trials and tribulations others have went through. It's exhausting, expensive and life altering. Stay safe and God bless you all.
It’s more important that you carry than what you carry for many defensive situations. We have tons of events happening in constitutional states and no one has a gun to stop it. I’ve had a ton of folks show me their Gucci gun in their Gucci custom holster and then go put it back in their vehicle.
@@mtower235 very good point. I’m not knocking anyone carrying a revolver at all. My point in the video was that using single action shouldn’t be the selling point to a new shooter lol.
@@thegundungeondefinitely
Got my g2c in .40 it’s the size of a little 9mm holds 10 rounds it’s plenty
I have heard this before about long shots being justified and yes it is justified if you are being shot at from longer distance and you need to make that longer more precise shot. Like others have said below, if I didn't think he/she was a threat to my life then I would not have had to draw the gun at all in the first place. Having said that personally I like to have that single action ability even though I can get a fairly more precise shot by staging or prepping the trigger in double action rather than just pulling the double action all the way through. Most of the time for close range straight pull double action is just fine. I have also heard the argument that double action is for experienced shooters and that it takes more practice but I disagree because the only difference between single and double is that double is just a long pull of the trigger. Now heavier double triggers may take more practice to master but not all double triggers are heavy. Double action is safer though with that longer trigger pull.
This round would be too inconsistent for my liking. Also 1100 fps at the muzzle seems to be a tad slow, especially for a round said to be +p. I think you'd be just as well off, or even better, with a normal flat tipped fmj with a higher muzzle velocity and at just a fraction of the price
I actually tested that very thing lol 😂
@@thegundungeon lol i stand corrected
I use a 686-6 2.5 inch. 1 no cartridge or shells left behind. And you can press the revolver up to the attacker and not go out of battery.
I am an old school soldier and peace officer. I have been in firefights both in the jungle and the streets. I'm still here. My question is this to all who posted comments here is simply, who among you have actually been involved in genuine armed conflicts? I imagine few, if any. I hesitate to post comments mainly due to the response of the many number of people that voice opinions without the experience of actually being there when their ass is on the line. However here, stating that revolvers are unacceptable solely upon no experience in this is ludicrous. Now I'm going to sit back and let this sink into those few that actually live beyond fantasy and Hollywood. I'm sure that some replys will be amusing.
Everything you said is 100% correct. Well done.
Definition of an optimist. Someone carrying a revolver and a speed loader 🤣🤣🤣.
I would consider a mini-revolver to be kind of a different category of beast than more of a larger sized single action and to me warrants consideration over a cowboy-style single action. A mini-revolver should not be a primary carry, but as a last ditch option, it has merit
Lot's of good points. My answer to that prosecutor might be, "If I didn't feel he was a threat then I wouldn't have pulled my revolver out at all." My eclectic collection includes a Cimmaron Pistolero Colt clone. (four clicks) Love the revolver, but it's far from my first choice for self defense. Besides speed and accuracy considerations there is the obvious low capacity and slow reloading.
Double action revolvers are for experienced shooters. Shooting a revolver takes much more practice to shoot well then a striker fire or single action pistol. Giving your wife or any other person a revolver as their first self defense pistol is just dumb period, unless they practice alot with it.
Chinese and Russian SKS have chrome lined barrels, Yugos do not.
All good points!!
When I decock a single action I place my off hand finger in between the hammer and the frame before I release the trigger. That way if my thumb slips off the trigger it will hit my finger and not the primer.
@@jamessotherden5909 I’m talking more high stress almost had to use it but things changed situations
There is nothing wrong with a single action. If you train with it.
@@TimDavis-wc7rc I agree, training is very important no matter what platform, I don’t see many new shooters packing a single action only though lol
You recommend semi-autos with a complicated manual of arms and complex malfunction procedures requiring a high level of skill and dexterity for new shooters?
@@mkshffr4936 are you saying a Glock is more complex than a revolver? New shooter doesn’t necessarily mean dumb or unable to learn basic concepts. I don’t recommend anyone just grab a gun and give it a whirl, under training and supervision I don’t see either platform being outside of the capabilities of most people, new to shooting or not new to shooting. We teach teenagers to drive a car, I have taught my kids at the age of 6 to operate AR’s… it’s not as complex as we often make it out to be.
@@thegundungeon Glocks have their own issues but setting that aside, if you are going to carry any auto you absolutely need be well versed in avoiding malfunctions (especially in close contact situations) and also well practiced in how to clear them. In close contact it is quite possible and even probable that you might have to have your wrist at an awkward angle inviting a limp wrist failure. You also have to insure that no part of the slide comes in contact with your body or your opponent's body (or clothing for that matter). The only area of revolver use that is as complex and training intense is the unlikely event that you need to reload in action. Admittedly that requires more dexterity than changing magazines. Don't get me wrong. I am not opposed to autos especially as a backup in case you stumble into a gang war but basic competence with one is more involved than that of a DA revolver.
@@mkshffr4936 each definitely have their own course of learning. I just don’t think single action use in a da/sa revolver is one of the selling points lol
@@thegundungeon I agree. It might be helpful for rank beginners to get the hang of sight picture without the complication of the DA pull but one should transition to DA very quickly. Also training in single handed and weak hand shooting needs to be emphasized.
The best defense single actions are the Schofields but they start at about $1200 or more. The other big impediment is lack of good concealment holsters. There are a few short barrel options which make that problem easier but not many. When it comes to the cocking issue you simply do not cock it until you commit to firing. Most single action revolvers do allow slip hammering which is the best way to stand at ready for short distance situations. I agree that with a DA revolver one generally should not shoot SA with the possible exception of taking out a mass shooter at distance to defend others.
@@mkshffr4936 Even the replica Schofields are outrageous. I love them, and they are much faster to reload than the saa style of single actions
@@thegundungeon Yes, I wasn't even thinking of an original. Those must require a mortgage. There is a nice 3" version that is really cool (can even use N frame speed loaders) but IIRC Taylor's wanted about a grand and a half. At that price you could get two Colt pattern guns and do a NY reload. 😄
@@mkshffr4936 it’s all for that cool break open empty case dump lol

H&K G11 was futuristic rifle that fired 4.7mm caseless ammo. It was withdrawn from NATO trials in 1979 due to safety issues. Plasma rays will definitely not be in our lifetimes. Unless some alien ship crash lands with iridium energy projectors.
If we're going caseless, we're going to need something different powder wise. HK tried the Caseless idea with the G11 and they couldn't overcome the same old issue of the "case" being the powder wasn't strong enough and tended to break apart dry let alone if it got wet. The caseless volcanic was nicely sealed and strong, but you couldn't get enough powder in the projectile and they were wimpy even for their day. We would need a powder that burns strong enough to give it sufficient lethality and a projectile that could double as the case. Some kind of "chamber" insert that still allowed obturation without jacket separation. The math isn't impossible but currently not commercially viable.
The ruger does not hold enough ammo, the banana mag is unreliable.I'll take the Marlin 60 anyday.
There are folks out there that make a screw and also a saddle ring for that safety hole. You take the safety out and install either one to your liking. They are only around twenty bucks, I believe. Nice rifle congrats and thanks for the nice review.
