  • I hear it and read it a lot that "9mm rivals .357 Magnum". Today I am putting that to the test by testing Buffalo Bore 9mm +P+ 147 gr XTP's VS Buffalo Bore .357 Magnum 180 gr XTP's. I am doing a chronograph test, ballistics gel test and 25 yard accuracy test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

      Thanks. It was a last minute thing on my last video with the square. I figured if the bullet isn't seen than it helps. The other two bullets in the block are from another test I did the same day (unreleased) and it was so clear in the block that there was no need to highlight it. I just try to make what I do as smooth and easy to follow as possible, whatever it takes, and some edits are different than others to accomplish it.

    I’ve shot the 180 grain jhp buffalo bore .357 from my 6” S&W model 27 and consistently saw velocities hovering near 1500 fps. I’ve taken several white tail deer with that combo, and I can say the terminal results are impressive.
    A good N frame or L frame revolver will handle a consistent diet of high pressure loads. I’m afraid those +P+ will send a semi auto 9 to an early overhaul, if not an early grave.

    For realz! 10mm rivals .357 magnum and that depends on the load. It takes like a 124gr 9mm +p in an 8.7" cz scorpion to get 1425 fps. That is how much barrel length you need to rival .357 magnum

    • @looseballs1966
      @looseballs1966 3 года назад +1

      Still doesn't come close to the 357 Alaskan Ballistics because if you stick a good warm/hotter loaded 125 grain 357 in the same 8.7 barrel you'll get one hell of a lot more than 1425 fps,,,,the handload I speak of in my comment to another guy on here using a 125 grain XTP bullet and 21.5 grains(that's not even topped completely out because max in most sources show 22 grains and a couple older books I have show 22.5 as max for H110) of H110 powder gets a solid 1600fps+ (more closer to 1650) in the 6.5 inch barrel of my Ruger blackhawk and 2250fps plus a little change in the 20 inch barrel of my henry's lever and only about 50-75 slower in a my 16 inch marlin,,,,on the other hand put the best +p or +p+ 9mm in the 16 inch barrel of either my sub 2000 or Ruger pc carbine and you only get a gain of about 150 or at very best 200 fps over say a 4 or 6 inch barrel,,,I've tried geting more from the 9mm using slower powders like bluedot and as slow as 2400 and others in that neighborhood and the 9mm just doesn't have the case capacity to make use of the slower powders (whats needed if velocity is the goal) and sticking with faster powders the overall pressures climb way too high long before you reach velocities above about 1400fps even with the 115 grain weight range, even in the longer barrels and pushed into the +p+ realms where you are asking for troubles because there is no set pressure limits for what is called those +p+ loadings,,,all of the 357 loadings I mention are all still within perfectly normal set SAAMI pressure limits for the 357,,,,i suggest you read what I wrote on here to HAYAO LEONE and gain some more understanding of how it all works the way it does ballisticly because some many are very mixed up and not understanding or knowing what they are talking or arguing about.

    This has been my point for awhile. There's such a focus on the gun that people often forget about the round design variable, both in the pressure and matching the bullet type to what you expect to shoot...

  • @nathanlambshead4778
    @nathanlambshead4778 3 года назад +6

    I don't usually shoot +P+, but when I do, I use someone else's gun. :)
    And just to mention also, there may be a similar barrel travel, but no flash gap in the 9mm. If there was it would lose more pressure than you might think, making it even less powerful. .357 Magnum is probably the overall best caliber ever developed in a handgun.

    Hey there is an incredibly useful resource called ballistics 101, it's basically a site that lists info on pretty much as much factory ammunition as they can find.
    Obviously still can lpad hotter but it gives you a very good idea where they caliber is.
    9mm most powerful round at least on this site is Buffalo bore 147g Hardcast flat nose +p+ for 550 foot pounds on energy.
    Now looking at 357 the vast majority of the factory loads are basically the same as the most powerful 9mm but .357 also has a few offerings hitting 800 foot pounds which you simply can't achieve with 9mm.

      I'm a proud Michigander. I don't drive low riders, only pick up trucks. However, we don't have a lot of dangerous game here, the occasional wolf thats rare and cougar which is even more rare. Have black bears, but they are small, 250# max usually and a 223/556 or a 30-30 kills them pretty good. 9mm works for me, though I like my GP100, but the 9mm makes more sense for edc, mainly due to capacity and reload speed.

    The 9mm can't touch a quality 357 round in a similar barrel length. I think the 40 S&W falls right in between, with hot handloads and boutique stuff like Buffalo Bore beating 9mm and approaching, but falling short of, 357. If you want 357 performance out of an autoloader with factory ammo, I think your best bet is 10mm.

    If by any chance there are still doubters of the 357 magnum, I got my hands on the same buffalo bore ammo that's tested in this video, and when I shot through the target at a local range, the bullets hit the rocky hill behind the target, and caused some rocks and a piece of wood about the size of my forearm to begin sliding down the hill toward the area of impact where the bullet hit. That really opened my eyes to the wonder 357 magnum has to offer. The feeling of the gun hitting between your index finger and thumb while it fired was also much different than the other ammo - it tingled.

    As a bullet nears the edge of the gel block and there's less and less gel between the bullet and the surface of the block, it will curve toward the surface of the block naturally and eventually escape the block entirely, as it will start to encounter less and less resistance from the thinning layer of gel (less mass) on the side of the bullet nearest the surface.

    I still remember the sting in my hand shooting that Remington 180gr HTP stuff through my J-Frame. As for that 9mm, I wouldn't put it in my P365. I'll stick with lower energy 124gr stuff. I haven't been shooting for a while. I'll have to fix that.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад

      Pretty much all .357 Mag ammo even in my 605 stings like that. It's amazing of just doubling the weight from a snubby to a 686 reduces the recoil so much, but it does.

    • @Fudmottin
      @Fudmottin 3 года назад

      @@GunSam Well you've got more mass to move, so less free recoil energy just from that. Also the powder does more work to get the bullet out, so there is less rocket thrust at the muzzle from the powder charge. Both of those contribute to reduced recoil. It also helps to have bigger grips that fit your hand better. That spreads the force over more of your hand to take out some of the sting.
      Besides. I think you now have dead nerves in your hands and don't feel the recoil so much anymore! :p

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад +1

      @@Fudmottin I think the bigger grips make as much difference as anything. If the 605 had an N frame grip frame and grip to match, I think it would be a surprising difference. Like, same recoil, but it don't matter. Sort of like a punch to the head bare VS a punch to the head wearing a helmet has the same power, but one feels different.

    You nailed the critical flaw many people commit when they do comparison of the 9mm Parabellum vs. 357 Magnum to justify the 9mm is as or better than the 357 for self defense. They often use the highest-end premium self-defense 9mm and lowest econo-grade 357 for the comparison. The 9mm is often loaded with exotic control expansion bullet to pressure level above SAMMI specs and the 357 are often loaded with cheap pure lead jacked hollow point bullet to barely above 38 Special +P pressure level.

      Depends on the revolver....I handload 180 grain .357 for the practice range. The larger bullets give me better accuracy in all my S&W wheelguns. I load both lead and jacketed, at low, moderate, and full power. I can shoot the full power 180 grain loads out of N-Frame and L-Frame guns with minimal recoil “response” (I don’t jerk the gun or scream like a little girl.). But, the same loads in my all-steel j-Frame is unbearable. If I tried to shoot that stuff in an Airweight .357 snubbing, I suspect I’d sell all my guns and move to Hawaii...

      Buffalo Bore states that they use real handguns, so there's not just one rating despite the box saying it. Companies like Hornady use a fake gun thing, it's a test barrel and gives higher velocity than a real revolver. If you find a Buffalo Bore round and look at the numbers it will show velocity from each gun, and they are often very close to what I get.

    Well Sam I'd like to correct you on one thing, you can or at least you used to be able to get lighter weight 357 bullets that will hold together at higher velocities,,,an example is a loading I've used for many years for hunting in my 357 carbine rifles,,,it's the Hornady XTP FP,,,,no not the common XTP hollow point but the XTP FP that is not actually a hollow point per say but a heavier constructed jacketed flat point design with very slight hollow point nose,, they are more toughly constructed and i have used them on deer and even elk in both 125 and 158 grain weights pushed very fast from carbine rifles with very good results, also the 140 FTX is a great lighter weight fast bullet option,,,,, Speer deep curles and nosler's also do better at holding together,,,at least on living tissue in myn hunting experience,,,anyhow,,,,I just laugh at the ignorance of guys trying to compare the 9mm to the 357 in terms of saying it rivals or equals or "just as powerfull LOL NOT IN ANY UNIVERSE,,,if you want a auto pistol caliber that will keep pace with the 357 you'll need a 10mm and it only barely (and I mean BARELY) keeps pace with the 357,,,oh boy do I here the 10mm fanboys heads exploding but look it up and test it any way you want to but fact is fact,,,and no I have no horse in this race all of these calibers are great at what the do so to speak,,,9mm is probably one of the absolute best rounds for personal defense because of it's low recoil, report, and flash,,,the 10mm is a great higher powered choice when you just want more horse power for those times when you just might run into larger ugly four legged vermin,,,,and the 357 can pretty much handle and do all those same jobs just as well or maybe a tad better because of the flexibility of the revolver allowing you to load anything from mild 38 special up to rather nuclear level thumpers that have no problem doing quite a good job on even some of the biggest of the big 4 legged nasties out there,,,but guys COME ON stop trying to make any of these calibers something they are not nor will ever be,,,if you need more horsepower stop trying to ad plusses to it and just get a bigger hammer,,if I know my 38 special or 9mm isn't going to be enough or the best for what I am likely to run into then i pack my 357 or 10mm if I think I may still be a bit undergunned or want that extra bit of security and comfort/mental comfort then I pack either one of my 44 magnums or 460 Rowland or hell if I really decide to go big or feel extra vulnerable that day maybe one of my 454 casull's or 460 S&W,,point is I don't push the weapon's ability to contain +p+++++ whatever ammo trying to make it that next level on the ladder i just move up to the rung on the ladder I'm trying to imitate with all those extra plusses,,,,but it seems some guys will never get it.

    Good Video again .. I guess that driving a 10 liter supercharged V8 or a wee Honda Civic is a fair comparison when you are on a 50 mph highway - you may arrive at exactly the same place and time. . When shooting your 9mm or 357 Magnum .. the limit is comfortably throwing the holes onto precisely the target center - & the power it took is sort of by-the-way?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад +3

      I mean, I think for the most part a .357 Mag will stop a normal threat better, but I can see with these lunatics that do mass shootings and wearing armor, how 9mm is the best defense against them as their armor would easily stop a .44 Mag. As many decent powered, easy to shoot rounds like a 9mm are good as your target is not center mass, and more likely to miss.

      Thanks. I don't always, well at least not what other's think of as apples to apples. Sometimes apples to apples is not a physical similarity but rather a philosophical one. For instance, I say that the .45 ACP and .357 Magnum are apples to apples. Some people will freak out and be like, no they aren't. However, back in the day before .357 Sig, .40 S&W and so on, the "highest up" handguns that were used in the same role, were the .357 Magnum and .45 ACP. So comparing the two "best" of an era that filled the SAME role, is apples to apples to me as some western police forces likes 1911's, and other's carried .357 S&W's.

    Revolvers can deliver way more power than the vaunted 9mm. That makes them my go to gun in my home. I have yet to hear, read or see news of any home owner using 16+ rounds of 9mm ammo in a home invasion. I think it is better to be able to use one shot from a powerful revolver per thug than to have to take several shots per thug with a 9mm. All it takes is steady practice at the range to get used to how a revolver shoots. I find that cocking the hammer back makes the trigger pull almost like a semi auto. Better to take the time to be accurate rather than the 'Pray N' Spray' method of the 9mm. Keep up the good work.

      I can't be certain, but typically the heavier the bullet the more efficient it is in a shorter barrel, as the heavy bullet is longer, take up more case capacity, reduces powder charge for max pressure and therefore has less powder to lose in a short barrel. Recoil would be brutal though.

    It doesn't seem like the extra 32 grains you'd get in that 147 grain 9mm is worth the extra pressure compared to 115 grain. That said 15+ rounds of that stuff would be one heck of a sidearm and good in a mob situation . Not as good a woods gun as a .357 and either would suffice for self defense under normal circumstances.

    Excellent points. I would not want to shoot very much +p+ 9mm, and i would not shoit it at all in a light polymer frame gun (my Kahr P9) or my S&W 3913, and certainly not in my BHP. Maybe a steel S&W or a Beretta. And the 357 still has a lot more energy and a heavier bullet. Some ppl are just intellectually dishonest- they like to twiat test conditions and facts to suit their own ideas, biases, and preconceived notions. Facts are very inconvenient to an ideologue. The 9mm is a fine cartridge in its best loadings. The 357 is very good even in average loadings, and exceptional in its best ones. The main use i see for +p+ loads like this is for animal defense, if a 9mm is all you have or is what you want to carry for reasons of weight, size, capacity, etc. Very nice test

    I hear people say the 9mm is better than all sorts of other cartridges and if it’s not then it’s only slightly less effective and the added capacity more than makes up for it even if it’s just an extra round. I’ve personally always thought you should carry the most powerful thing you can shoot effectively.
    The absolute hottest 9mm seems to sit between a .40 180 grain HST and a 165, 1010 FPS and 1130. A standard Glock 22 barrel can shoot those HSTs, a Glock 17 is limited to +P 9mm.
