It's pretty awesome because they could have just said that Boji can read lips because he can, but they didn't chose lazy writing. They worked with it. Since a lot of people don't know he can read lips.
This anime really sticks-out, yes, BUT the worldbuilding is HORRENDOUS. I mean, holy fluff, EVERYTHING could happen when the world is this badly established. I have no reason to not expect some Facehugger from the Alien-Franchise to work in a Grocery-Shop in some Village. None.
To be honest people saying that always confuses me. Why? The second I saw the art style I 100% guessed what it exactly would be and that it was going to be good and refreshing and would probably call back to very classic tropes while kind of side-winding around a lot of recent anime norms. It was very obvious what it was going for and how skilled the company was. There's a lot of dark childrens' tales out there and this seems like a beautiful blend of them with warmer and purer stories. I wonder if people thinking otherwise is a symptom of anime having gotten too samey. It isn't like this is particularly weird looking for animation, just doesn't do the s*x doll look like most anime.
Domas never cared about training Boji in a way that suited him. As we see later on, when he’s training Hokuro, Hokuro realizes that Domas only cares about training people in his EXACT style, regardless of whether or not it’s a good fit with his pupil. Hokuro then resolves to teach himself. Domas may be the best swordsman, but not only is he not a good teacher, but he fails to see any way of fighting or being strong that doesn’t match his own idea of strength.
Each time someone said that Bojji couldn't fight because he's too weak to use a normal sword, I wanted to shout at them "Just give him a lighter weapon! Stop focusing on what he can't do and teach him to fight in a way that plays to his strengths!". Fortunately, Despa had the common sense to actually train Bojji in a fighting style that requires little physical strength and gave him a light weapon that he could use. Once that happened, Bojji became a force to be reckoned with. TL;DR Domas is a shitty mentor with insufficient common sense.
Yeah domas sucks. I still have a hard time with forgiving him. I suspect with how this show plays out we as the viewer will either have to forgive him for bojjis sake or maybe he'll be the first character to actually die.
Kage telling boji he's rooting for him in the first episode and the reveal of hiling's true intentions made me fucking cry lmao. Having a step-mom character that looks and kinda acts like the typical evil stepmom trope but she turns out to actually be a super caring, overprotective and loving mom hit different. She reminds me of my mom and i cried my eyes out
Saw someone say they didn't like ousama ranking because all the characters "kept switching sides randomly for no reason". Just wow, ones of this people who need to be spoon fed motivations and plot details.
Heaven forbid he watch anything other than shounen shows where the characters exposit their motivations while throwing skyscraper-clearing shockwaves around. Dude would've suffered watching game of thrones, oh my god.
guess that person has no higher level critical thinking skills.... this isn't Dora the explorer where everything is spelt out to you. Ousama Ranking has some of the best writing ive ever seen in anime/manga
can't speak for others but it's the only anime out right now I feel worth watching but I'm not paying for a subscription to watch it. I WILL once spring anime come out that I'm actually interested in. this winter has kinda sucked for anime.
you are so right in this but i would like to add one thing. How they handle Kage. The backstory of Kage makes you truly understand the full situation and you know what he means when he say he will be in Boji's corner. Kage had everything bot got it taken away unto nothing. All it took was Bojis purehearted kindness to bring that little ray of hope... We all need a friend like Kage, from time to time.
This show's ability to consistently subvert surface level expectations and humanize characters is what I love the most about it. On the surface they all look like typical fairy tale generic characters that you automatically assume are going to fill some archetype; like snotty prince, evil stepmother, evil snake guy, etc, but then they just... don't... and that's a magical and rare experience in a landscape dominated by regurgitated characters and tropes. I love it.
I cried literally every episode for 6 episodes straight. This show is so delightful and filled with so many heart-warming as well as tragic moments. Please don't skip out on this one y'all!
5:17 I must also give some credit to the actual animation for making me cry. Like I was bursting, partly because of how extremely expressive his face was in that certain moment. Like it's exaggerated to the point where you just can tell his emotion by looking at him. They do an incredible job at animating character expressions in this anime.

@@nenmaster5218 really it gives me a typical rpg world type setting, medieval with mages, assassins, healers, tanks and generic warriors. seems simple enough to me but with enough to know what to expect
As an animation student i absolutely ADORE the artstyle/character designs of ousama ranking. I was surprised to find that people got turn off by the art style while for me that was the main reason I got into watching the show.
Lol same I'm an animator to and I thought the style was VERY pleasing. Idk why it's supposedly disliked but I think it has a mix between old Fairytale Drawings but modernized
@@Yahnart Right! There's something so charming about the style that just fits the story/universe. Not to bash the typical anime styles as they definitely have a place, but personally I prefer seeing unique character designs, faces, and shape silhouettes that immediately tell you what kind of character they might be.
Regarding the "Why all MCs look the same", that's because thats what the Japanese audience wants/expects. Case and point, when Komi-san anime released, people in the west liked the fact that Tadano looked different/unique compared to all the other MCs. However in Japan people hated the way he looks because he looked different, resulting in the anime not being at all popular in japan.
@Nerfular 1) I was talking about the ANIME not the manga. 2) The groups of people that watch anime are usually different from the ones that read the manga 3) Big manga fanbase =/= big anime fanbase as there are so many people that are anime-only be it in the west or in Japan.
I bet the reason is more simple : The MC 'has' to look generic enough so he can be a good self insert of the main group of viewers (aka the japanese audience), so maybe that's why this anime didn't had the usual reception in Japan, while in the rest of the world people don't care too much about these things and get bored of the same design repeated every time
@@Bane_Amesta that is mostly the reason. They need to look extremely generic to be a self insert (Kirito style) or unique in order to escape reality (Deku, Itadori, Soro from No Game No Life). There are obviously exceptions but the point still stands. Also, just because the look unique or generic doesn't mean the story is bland.
@Nerfular Dude, I never said that animes weren't used to promote the source material. Which isn't true by itself anyway. Anime is made to make the studios money. Plain and simple. If the source is already popular, that's when it usually gets an anime. It's still pretty rare for a mostly unknown manga or light novel or other source to get an adaptation. The anime industry is struggling as is, they simply do not have the time or resources to waste on things that have a high risk of failing. Even animes with an in-built audience from its source can still fail after all, especially if the adaptation isn't any good. Notice how anime with less popular source materials get less of a budget until it proves its worth and sells. This is shown time and again as seasons of certain anime come and go and the budget rises and rises. You do know that, right? Anyway, back to your point, yes, the anime can help in promoting the source, but MANY anime watchers simply do not read manga. At least not in my and many others' experiences. My view has nothing to do with the video, so don't go assuming crap. I don't know what experience you have, but everywhere I've been, anime is always more popular than manga. People just tend to prefer to watch something rather than read it from what I can gather. It's a cliche, but TV/streaming is just more popular than reading these days. And that's simply a fact. Plus, to be brutally honest, people find it easier to pirate anime than pirating manga. I could go on and talk about binge culture and the oversaturation of anime out there, but if you don't get the picture now, you never will. I don't know how else to break it down to you. If you refuse to see my point after all this, them you're either extremely naive/ignorant or needlessly stubborn. I say all this as a manga reader, so don't go assuming I'm biased either. I prefer anime, yes, but I do read manga too. So I actually do know what I'm talking about.
I have seen the joke go around a little that every evil character in this show will turn out to have a sympathetic tragic backstory, but besides being a joke, I think it missed the point. Like you said at the end, Ranking of Kings understands and shows that people aren't inherently evil but can do evil things. Or good things. Or make mistakes. It's just human. It's also refreshing to see a main character with true challenging flaws (and for example when he sees Domas again later, he's understandably scared and angry and had a lot of emotions that are difficult to deal with instead of just... oh, I am stronger than you now, I'm not scared of you!). What sets Boji apart from everyone else is that he is as much a tragic backstory as anyone, but he still chooses to do good.
I think the point of Daida is *he is too young to have a tragic back story,* we _are actually seeing it unfold!_ After all everything that's happened since he got voted in kingship _has been trying to take it from him_ and that includes Bojji, who he *must* lose to if Bojji as the MC is "to win" So yea he's a spoiled brat, but *also* we're seeing him immediately thrust into positions where everything he feels he's worked for is being taken away from him, even by virtue of simply "not being as strong as dad" (the massive ranking drop) Kid's having his mid-life crisis before he hit double digits. 😂
This was such a Great and clear in-depth review. Thank you for this and I feel like your channel will grow so much and this video will be very popular. You're so underrated and I can't wait to see your get the recognition you deserve.
Thank you very much it really means a lot! I will keep making videos and hopefully one day I can prove you right. Lets also hope that this video actually gets to stay up this time and doesn't get removed for copyright again.
I love how he put it 😭 it still made me cry because boji is such a good king to me he’s kind hearted n it’s his fathers fault but his mother has strength n that’s why he has potential n I love this boy😭😭🥺🥺 I was crying in the first episode bc I could tell Kage n Boji had a connection and just the feeling of everything
"Ranking of Kings respect your time". This is a statement that I fully agree with, in fact one of the main reason I despise a lot of mainstream overhyped anime. Only few great anime series that value audience time being invested on their series. Cowboy bebop, samurai champloo, monster, made in abyss to name a few, excel in this. I'm not impressed with amazing visual animation sequence (Demon slayer, FGO), I don't want to see some waifu showing their jiggly boobies and pantyshot, I want to see the character and story grow. That all that matter to me, regardless the artstyle. Heck, doraemon and sin chan artstyle is not that impressive but they carry a good story that worth investing my time watching them.
@@chonkyboi._. Fuck no dude ANY artist in anime with enough time can make impressive animation. It can be used well but most of the time it isn't.One or two frames of awesome animation at the right moment do more for me now that a half hour fight where it is just an artist showcase with no other point.
@@chonkyboi._. an anime can have great animation and shit plot and u wouldn't continue watching ull just skip to the fight scenes and read the manga(god of highschool anime) if its the opposite ull drop the series and read the manga ( 7 deadly frames is a good example) and if both are shit ull drop and not bother with the manga animation is important but story is equally important
I can't agree with that since Demon slayer is the same and it is also a story that doesn't waste time. If you read the manga you'll realize how short it is and every page is important. Compared to other shounen animes it is the only one that perfectly animated each chapter with no missing information. The only reason it has many episodes in the anime is because of the battle scenes. Even their jokes and comedy side gives you information about the plot or it could give you an idea of what the character's personality are. After reading the manga I was surprised and happy to think that every page will for sure be animated since everything has importance and everything will be hype.
I must admit when I saw Ranking of Kings I thought it was a kids show with the animation style but I decided to watch it and boy was I surprised. That show has more depth and emotion than anything on TV right now. Definitely it's a diamond in the sea of mediocre
Me after looking at the title: "Hmm, we'll see, it can't be that heart wrenching" Me after hearing your summary of the 2 episodes: * Clears throat alot and blinks to keep vision clear of tears. "Aight u made ur point, I'll add it to the list"
After watching this video, i now fully understand why it's really hard for bojji to forgive domas. Instead of training bojji and find a way how should bojji use his ability, domas somehow just go tantrums like an idiot. He even tried to kill bojji by daida instruction. Unlike despa, he lack fighting ability, but strategically he is god tier. He know how people should use their ability
because Despa knows how being weak, i think ep 16 there was a backstory of despa knowing how weak he are, and he himself knows how to polish a stone into a diamond.
Despa best teacher. I like how he train Bojji to a skill that actually fits him. He give good motivation to Bojji too. Also the snake who first teach Bojji to horn his agility and fast reading. I guess Domas brainwash into thinking that only strength (mostly due to Bosse legacy) or swordplay is fits for king style fighting. He got redemption for teaching Hokuro other than sword as weapon
as a disabled person this really hurts and hits close to home i have autism. I'm perfectly capable of understanding what's going on around me, I'm very smart, I'm very empathetic and friendly, and I'm very capable of making friends and forming bonds. everyone assumes the opposite of me i also have adhd. I can actually focus extremely well, to the point I will concentrate on something for hours and hours without getting up to eat, drink, go to the bathroom, nothing. (this is called hyperfocus, many adhd people can do it). but I can't choose on what I focus on. again, I'm very smart, and I get very good grades I'm a perfectly capable human being, I have strengths and weaknesses like anyone else. but then, once I tell and show people how I'm not at all a mindless and heartless social reject, they then start to kind of test me it's so very frustrating, because I can't pass these metaphorical tests. i can't make eye contact, I can't understand jokes, I'm a little akward I'm conversation and I constantly get way too comfortable with people and overshare and get too close for their comfort so I end up driving them away. i can't focus on many things, it's so hard for me to be on time for things. everyone sees this and goes "oh, I was right, they really are an akward idiot. they were just lying to make themselves feel good". it's so frustrating. I'm just as capable as everyone else, I just need the right tools and environment to succeed. I'm different, not inferior so just seeing this boy and all his strengths being judged for the things he can't do just breaks my heart. seeing him sob and wish so bad to be seen and try so hard to be taken seriously. god, I wanna watch this anime but idk if I can make it through
dunno, id say just do what u gotta do and ignore everybody as though they wouldn't exist. No need to overload ur brain with idiots. Most ppl are sheeps anyway.
I'm autistic and I also have ADHD!! I finished watching Ranking of Kings a while ago and it was one of the best experiences I had watching anime, It's totally worth it. :)
I agree with all these except for one, the example used of Gauche from Black Clover. The characters of the Black Bulls and a lot of Black Clover, except for the Clover King, start as tropes but you can see them grow from them. The reason why Gauche cares for his sister that much is because she is the only family left for him, but the time that Asta arrives, he starts to see how his sister wasn't his only family but the Black Bulls. That why he used his powerful magic item to both give Asta the advantage and to save Asta and Yami against "Licht". Gauche grew from being a trope/stereotype.
The story where it requires you to watch more and then u finally understand but not 100% understand is either MEDIOCRE or TRASH story. Dont follow the path of these stories. "One Piece" is one big example. It works in the past, but not today's standard. Our standard already IMPROVED. At least, make it like Shingeki no Kyojin. They be like.. answering a question but then giving us 10 questions. Like the end of season 1 there. Wall titan mystery. WIT Studio here so genius finding gem stories even tho their art kinda low quality or weird by the standard of the anime trend at that time. Shingeki no Kyojin, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Vinland Saga, and now this, Ousama Ranking. They all have weird artstyle. But WIT still choose to adapt them into animation. AND IT WORKS! Edit: moral of my comment is: 1. Story>Art. So dont be afraid to write your novel n comic, people that not confident about their art skill! 2. WIT Studio the best animation studio. They dont discriminate stories. They knows how to judge a story is by looking at the STORY. THE PLOT. Not by the art style, the action scenes, and the fanservice.
@@DBT1007 Ok, I agree one piece is trash but your first sentence I disagree with. You don't have to tell us everything about a character in a few episodes and I don't think you have to understand everything about a character. For some shows it can be a problem tho.
@@ashcrow1356 but the issue is NONE of that is really shown or conveyed meaningfully. It ONLY happens when the author is like "oh shit these side characters haven't done anything, okay I'll put someone to near death then have the black bulls show up pretending like they care despite them watching him get his ass beat for 10 minutes". Like yes these moments exist but they don't make sense and they certainly don't fit. The point of the black bulls is that they're this outsider black ops group that thinks of itself as family even before Asta, that was Yami's intention and they all actually respect him, but from the backstories given to us they clearly aren't. They don't start thinking or acting like a found family until Asta so...... what even was the point of Yami founding them then?
the moment I cried was also in episode 2, but it's when bojji offers kage to take his clothes (and possibly other belongings) because he thought that kage's there to rob him again. that alone shows how kind-hearted bojji was
I only recently discovered this anime about a week or so ago... and quite randomly, actually. For some reason or other, out of NOWHERE I just began seeing short clips/scenes from this series. LITERALLY without me ever having searched for or even _seen_ it. (That RUclips algorithm, I guess 🥴) At first, I ignored these pop up vids. For me, the style was a bit of a put off. I'm ashamed to admit that I initially wrote the animation off as too "goofy" and "simplistic" looking. But after several days of seeing various clips show up in my recommended, I rolled my eyes and *FINALLY* clicked on one. The one I clicked on _just so happened_ to be the video of *[SLIGHT SPOILER!]* ................... Queen Hiling jumping out of a window in an effort to catch a falling Bojji. That scene piqued my interest, _especially_ the comments underneath it, so I began clicking on more vids, scrolling through comments, and soon found myself lost down a figurative rabbit hole of videos for _Ranking of Kings._ I say with confidence that yours is the *BEST* video summary I've seen...not "just" of _this_ series, but I think this is quite possibly the most COMPREHENSIVE synopsis that I've ever seen/heard of ANY series. You gave SUCH a clear-cut, clean explanation, while giving JUST the right amount of personal commentary along the way. Sometimes it can be hard to strike that perfect balance; I tend to get annoyed at those content creators who like to add in fake self-deprecating style "personalities", or the ones who go out of their way pretending to be "awkwardly geeky" in an effort to appear "relatable", or "adorkably" unfunny. Those always feel SO fake to me and they come off like they care more about trying to become a popular -television- RUclips personality than giving an actual analysis on whatever it was the video subject was originally supposed to have been about. (If that makes sense) I usually end up either fast forwarding through those sorts of vids in an effort to get to the ACTUAL content, OR I just click off the video altogether. I didn't get that urge _AT ALL_ on your video. Actually, I found myself _disappointed_ in how quickly this video ended! It's *SUPER HARD* to find videos like yours, so I'm SO excited to have found this channel and will be subscribing. I can already tell that you're going to be one of the *GREATS.* ❤️ *THANK YOU* for helping to introduce me (and others) to this beautiful and bittersweet story. I fell in love with the characters IMMEDIATELY and this story has something for EVERYONE. (Right now Dorshe is my *FAV!)*
@Rose Bride I recommend mothers basement! His videos are just as great as this one when comes to explaining why a show is good (or bad) and they are a bit longer but that's because he goes onto more detail(s.)
Daida berating Domas for voting against Bojji was one of my favorite surprise moments in the anime. It's one of those little things that shows you that Daida isn't as bad a person as he first appeared to be. ... granted, in the same breath he orders Domas to kill the kid, but at least we see he has some sense of honor.
Think it was a test for Domas, but not the way Daida told him, since Domas has already let down the previous kings, Daida wanted to see if he would do anything to redeem himself, by going even further and try to kill his student. I believe Daida made sure Bebin had someone who could save Boji, if Domas went through with it (Kage) but then he drank that smoothie and we know the rest...
@@chriswihulu I don’t think Daida would think that far ahead for the sake of his rival king, and step brother. He’s already too deep with miranjo’s influences, and please acknowledge he still childish and not as wise as Babin. Remember when he ordered Babin to kill those people who voted for Bojji? Well I do. The time Daida finally realized is when he got trapped inside his own body.
Daida was voice by Eren, the guy only voice main character/support important character. So there you go, biggest hint ever that Daida is not as simple as his character be.
I remember when I discovered this anime the cover had Bojji in underwear on a throne… moth my sisters thought I was weird for wanting to watch this anime .. I had a feeling this anime will have an emotional impact on me. So I managed to convince my sisters to watch it and a day later ….. ye.. …… we formed a „we adore bojji“ Fanclub.
In the first few epidoses I saw so many characters that i was like "so this is the bad guy" And then later: "Oh so he's not a bad guy" To: "OH! He's actually a bad guy!" To think again: "Maybe not...". That's because i was looking for a generic story, but as you said in the beginning of the video, these characters actually have feelings and motivations we sometimes Just don't know, they're not good neither bad.
The author skillfully created two scenes where Thomas get to teach two different pupils, in separate chapters weeks apart, relying on the viewer's intelligence to piece together his point about Thomas's flaw in how he failed to see strength in others. The author let us perceive information through Thomas's eyes, then later through Hokuro's eyes to let us discover things in a whole new perspectives. This happens over and over in Ranking of Kings and is extremely satisfying.
Not going to Lie, This Anime had a lot to do in helping me break out of my depression! This Lil boy is Probably the Personality I look up to the most! Is it not ironic!😂
This one quickly became a weekly favourite. I definitely need to watch it again to catch what I missed, though. So much gets packed into each episode. It's really impressed me.
*"Ranking of kings respects your time"* Truer words never been spoken. I can already amazed at how this anime handle mute & deaf MC, but they offer much more than that Don't believe in yourself! Believe in Prout Brothers who believe in you! 😂
He might not be evil, but as far as I'm concerned, Domas can eat dirt for the rest of his life. Yeet Miranjo into the sun while we're talking about characters who did irredeemable acts or took part in them.
Exactly, he can't redeem himself from what he did. He didn't like Bojji when he was weak and told him to get beaten to death by his brother. He betrayed his king's orders and instead of protecting Bojji, he didn't even interfere in his fight were he was about to be killed. Later on He killed Bojji in the worst possible way. Maybe he wanted Bojji to die so that he can get Daida to train instead wasting his so precious time on a deaf mute retarded feeble kid. After killing Bojji, he was so guilt ridden(fake remorse). If he didn't wish to kill Bojji and then why didn't he get back to his senses after Bojji survived Domas's multiple failed assassination attempts. And if you argue that he was just following orders from his new king then why didn't he follow his king's orders and protect(If Apeas hadn't stopped the fight when he did, Daida would have killed Bojji) or vote for Bojji to be king. He wasn't a loyal knight, he can't be trusted by Bojji when he becomes the king. In real life people don't change so easily. If you trust them after they've betrayed you in past just because they apologize and beg for your forgiveness, they will backstab you again and again to get what they want and never feel any guilt for it.
At that scene I shouted at the screen visibly upset even my teens were pissed. We all agreed that Domas should throw himself into the pit of hell where all traitors belong.
Honestly, I’m still holding some hope to Domas at redeeming himself. I don’t want boji to live with hatred. Poor boy, he didn’t even how to act, feeling hatred for the first time.
Domas was loyal to his king and trusted in their orders. He hated it, but did it out of loyalty. Forgiving him is up to Bojji and is understandably extremely hard to do...but equally, I don't blame Domas for it. I blame the person that caused the order to happen. And that's why looking at the OP, I can't help but wonder what drives Miranjo. The stuff with the demon looks....interesting.
5:40 That's exactly what a thought, this shows catch me by the story and the storyteling, it's so well written and presented, that shows every A+ tier anime how to tell a story. I'm not a great writer, but there's a lot of A+ tier anime that I think that I could do better in some parts of the story, in Ousama Ranking just don't have any part so far that I could say the same.
My favorite show in a very, very long time. The depth of the characters developed is phenomenal and that multi-layered aspect makes them all very realistic and even relatable. That OP as well, oh my God, it is my favorite of the season if not beyond that.. Also, Hilling is best mom, absolutely adore her. Latest episode was over in an absolute flash, had me on the edge of my seat and had even more character development for one of the most mysterious characters
Queen Hiling has given me affirmation about something I feel about the writing of a lot of popular shows. I can't stand it when a character exists solely to be hated. Whether it is to make the main character look better or to make it more satisfying when they're beaten; when a character doesn't exist as a character, but a cardboard cutout of a mustache twirling villain (or alternatively armband wearing racist) it ruins even the best shows for me. Just as you said Hiling is amazingly written. I can believe both the side that was presented to us as an evil stepmother and the kindhearted heroine. She's so well written that her doing something as petty as asking a subordinate to apologise for her becomes endearing because we know she does truly mean it and that she just has problems expressing herself. 86 was a good example of an otherwise good show ruined because of cardboard bad guys for me. All Alba other than the main girl and her friend were incompetent racist morons who looked to be incapable of doing anything remotely positive in their lives.
You are gonna go FAR as a youtube creator. You're just as good as BonsaiPop, if not better. I hope you're in a position not to have to sit this career path down for other things in your life because you could very easily make a good career from this. I'll be watching.
Yupp I was in tears on ep 2. I couldn't believe how real it felt and how much sorrow this little boy had in his life. Given every disadvantage, he still pushes to achieve and become stronger. Really hit home, I'll likely remember this anime for the rest of my life. The OPs are dope too
The fact that this anime made me do a 180 on how I thought about the characters so early on makes me love it, I went from hating on the other characters until I saw everything from a whole view.
Same I love this anime the art style and characters and story are so good. I love how I can go from loving to hating to loving a character over episodes. Feeling betrayed then trying to see what is going on behind the scenes and what gets revealed in the future. I'm only watching the dub right now. Bojji is such a sweet boy and hilling turning out to be a different character than you think from how she looks. And the side characters are amazing. The knight Anne is such a badass.
Can’t hold you. This is the FIRST anime that brought a tear to my eyes. The entire series is so heart touching…then eventually you find out why he’s like this 🥺
This anime has so quickly become one of my favorites, I also keep telling people to watch this show “because I was hooked after two episodes” (maybe I even talk about this show too much). Great video man!
This show has been a mix of emotional rollercoaster for me. I would never like this art style but on the site a lot of people were recommending it and so I gave it a try, just the first 2 episodes made me tear up and since then I've been hooked. This is one of the only anime that made me cry, laugh, get angry and feel pity for both the heros and the villans. This is one of the anime, i would truely consider as one of my top 10 of all time.
The emotional whiplash for Hilling is something I don't think we'll see in anime, at least never as well. She pulls an immediate negative emotion from the audience because we initally lean into the "evil step-mother" trope, but then they do a complete 180 and start showing the audience that Hilling isn't out for Boji's failure, just his survival. Diada is initally bratty, but we see where his lines are. The mirror tells him morally dubious, but stratigically sound, advice on how to become king, and he gets mad when Domas tells him that he voted for Diada to be the king despite the will of the last king. I was not expecting Diada to get pissed off about someone who supports him betraying the king. The way this show writes characters is almost like real life, where their morals and their ambitions never really cross paths in how far they're willing to go. Diada ignores the advice from the mirror at times because he doesn't want to gain the throne in a manner that feels underhanded, and Hilling is (oddly) inept at expressing her actual feelings, often going to other people to translate them. No one character feels out of place.
When I saw Bojji and his backstory and stuff I felt so bad for the kiddo and the 1st OP ohhh that hits the spot it's so sad his father took his giant power Edit: Yeah I hated Hilling but now I see more of her I like her
I haven't watched any anime for so long sincei stopped but one thing I noticed that makes the show so interesting is it's realism, yes there's some fictional elemennts but events that happen seem to be very realistic to happen such as not being actually overpowered during the duel but only being able to show his potential and more.
Not only is the story amazing, but the art / animation style is so shapely and fluid. I really enjoy fairy tales and this story had me hooked and it also felt super familiar to me from the start.
Back in high school, I was always the "special" kid. I guess it was mostly because I just did my own thing and didn't really get social queues, but I digress, and people would always laugh behind my back. Despite the fact that everyone acted like they were my friend, I've always felt like it's for my sake, or because they feel obligated to be nice. Seeing a character like this who I can relate to on such a personal level is really inspiring to me even despite the fact that I don't even have much in common with Bojji.
9:10 I LOVE THIS GUY! :D 9:38 This was honestly the most UNSETTLING scenes I've seen in a WHILE! Seeing the threat, the slow questioning, "Wait.. No. He- he wouldn't do that! ...Would he...?" Until he DOES IT, completely ripping your heart out! And- and then the GENUINE GUILT! So bad he LITERALLY CUTS HIS OWN HAND OFF!!! _CHEFFS KISS!_
4 minutes and 13 seconds to this video and I honestly have to pause and not watch anymore of it because you already got me interested in it .. lol , I'm so watching it once I finnish psycho-pass another decent anime I like almost done.
I totally agree that ROK respects the viewers' time. Being one that grew up with big shonen animes, it was so refreshing watching something that tells you so much in less than 25mins. and at the same time, keeps the mystery of the plot.
Well if this was good I would highly HIGHLY recommend reading "reverend insanity" the manga had been dropped because government forced the creator to discontinue it, but you can read the full novel online.
im glad im not alone when i thought straight up hilling was gonna be a bad guy. Mostly from the classic "Evil step-parent" trope and her behavior from the first few eps but I was shocked to see that she actually cares for boji like a son, to the point she even tried to learn sign language. Honestly, that is an awesome change of pace at least to me.
I like Boji's way of fighting. Especially the dodging. War isn't just about defeating the enemy, it's also about getting home to your loved ones. Unfortunately, a lot of people in the anime in the beginning only agree with the fighting style that King Boss and Domas use. Honestly, I watched the episode where Boji dodges every one of Daida's swings and I realized if he was in a real battle, he would have been one of the few people to go home. As a king it is the king's duty to do right by his people, so honestly if he as the king feels he needs to be "cowardly" or "dirty" in sword play then God damnit be cowardly and dirty so you can go home to your people. Sure, a king in their eyes can trade blows with their enemy, but it's also more likely that they'll get hit and end up bleeding out. Yes, they'll be a "great king" but at the end they won't even have a country anymore, much less be a king, cause they'll either have waisted their time trading blows and letting their country fall, or be on the ground bleeding out because they didn't have the common sense to dodge. Edit: Spelling and Grammar lol
Yeah Ranking of Kings is my favourite anime too its soo cool and i always wait for the next episode and i am always excited i recomend it very much to yall
Sign language done in an anime AND THE MAIN CHARACTER IS DEAF?! The expressions in this one are top notch.

It's pretty awesome because they could have just said that Boji can read lips because he can, but they didn't chose lazy writing. They worked with it. Since a lot of people don't know he can read lips.

Great point
That's true. He needed a wise teacher to bring out his true potential rather than a strong one.
Bebin is a better teacher than Domas. In every possible aspect of mentorhood. Damn, i'd argue Bebin's even a better person by a long stretch
Yeah, I love that black blob too. We all want a friend like him.
you are so right in this but i would like to add one thing.
Very true I cut the stuff about kage just so the video wasn’t to long. I’ll probably talk about him in the next video.
I thought of Kage as a creepy creature. But I warmed up to him and find him cuddly

Kage’s backstory also made me tear up a bit.
I love it.

2) The groups of people that watch anime are usually different from the ones that read the manga
3) Big manga fanbase =/= big anime fanbase as there are so many people that are anime-only be it in the west or in Japan.
@Nerfular Not really, no. Manga readers and anime watchers are not mutually exclusive. I know A LOT of anime fans who don't read manga for instance.
@@absurdturk oh, I know. You see it being repeated a lot in the comments on episodes on crunchy roll
I think the point of Daida is *he is too young to have a tragic back story,* we _are actually seeing it unfold!_
After all everything that's happened since he got voted in kingship _has been trying to take it from him_ and that includes Bojji, who he *must* lose to if Bojji as the MC is "to win"
So yea he's a spoiled brat, but *also* we're seeing him immediately thrust into positions where everything he feels he's worked for is being taken away from him, even by virtue of simply "not being as strong as dad" (the massive ranking drop)

Edit: moral of my comment is:
1. Story>Art. So dont be afraid to write your novel n comic, people that not confident about their art skill!
2. WIT Studio the best animation studio. They dont discriminate stories. They knows how to judge a story is by looking at the STORY. THE PLOT. Not by the art style, the action scenes, and the fanservice.

That scene piqued my interest, _especially_ the comments underneath it, so I began clicking on more vids, scrolling through comments, and soon found myself lost down a figurative rabbit hole of videos for _Ranking of Kings._
I say with confidence that yours is the *BEST* video summary I've seen...not "just" of _this_ series, but I think this is quite possibly the most COMPREHENSIVE synopsis that I've ever seen/heard of ANY series. (If that makes sense)
I usually end up either fast forwarding through those sorts of vids in an effort to get to the ACTUAL content, OR I just click off the video altogether. I didn't get that urge _AT ALL_ on your video. Actually, I found myself _disappointed_ in how quickly this video ended! It's *SUPER HARD* to find videos like yours, so I'm SO excited to have found this channel and will be subscribing. @Rose Bride I recommend mothers basement! His videos are just as great as this one when comes to explaining why a show is good (or bad) and they are a bit longer but that's because he goes onto more detail(s.)
yeah, those first two episodes made me really invested in Bojji... I did not cry. there were just onion cutting ninjas in my room.
Or he was emotionally manipulating Domas into having a reason to kill Boji
I remember when I discovered this anime the cover had Bojji in underwear on a throne… moth my sisters thought I was weird for wanting to watch this anime .. I had a feeling this anime will have an emotional impact on me. So I managed to convince my sisters to watch it and a day later ….. ye.. …… we formed a „we adore bojji“ Fanclub.
In the first few epidoses I saw so many characters that i was like "so this is the bad guy"
And then later:
"Oh so he's not a bad guy"
To:
"OH! He's actually a bad guy!"
To think again:
"Maybe not...".
That's because i was looking for a generic story, but as you said in the beginning of the video, these characters actually have feelings and motivations we sometimes Just don't know, they're not good neither bad.
Exactly they feel like actual human beings.
story of my life. hahhahaha
even i dont know miranjo is evil now.....
Bojji father in a nutshell haha
@Thiago Moura Humans invented warsdo, dont think "too high" about us.
Ye, sadly we do even worse.
Man broke it down perfectly on why I loved the show! Great video man
This one quickly became a weekly favourite. I definitely need to watch it again to catch what I missed, though. So much gets packed into each episode. It's really impressed me.
*"Ranking of kings respects your time"* Truer words never been spoken.
I can already amazed at how this anime handle mute & deaf MC, but they offer much more than that
Don't believe in yourself! Believe in Prout Brothers who believe in you! 😂
And if you ever start to doubt yourself, We’ll come and belt you one Simon
It’s probably not just hatred but also fear for Domas from Bojji
this anime is truly a masterpiece. every scene has a meaning and there's so much symbolism. and yes i literally cry every episode 🤣
This review is OP, I already love and have been caught up with the show but couldn't help but to watch this entire video.
I sobbed so loudly during episode 2 my roommate came running to make sure I was okay 😅
The Kamina quote at the end-
Ep 8 of Gurren Laggan still hurts to this day.
Stumbled upon this video and started watching Ranking of Kings. This anime is awesomely refreshing and I'm hooked. Thank you 👍
You're right, the first two episodes broke me down in tears.
Heard about the show, was unsure if I should take the time to watch it. This helped me decide to watch the show.

Can’t hold you. This is the FIRST anime that brought a tear to my eyes. The entire series is so heart touching…then eventually you find out why he’s like this 🥺
This show feels so personal to me. It has become special in so many ways, I hope it reaches way more people soon!
Glad people are actually talking about this show so underrated
This show is utterly incredible! I love everything about it.
Your video randomly came up in my feed. After watching it, I went out and found this anime. Loved it. Thanks for the great suggestion.
Stumbled across this anime randomly, thinking it might not be my cup of tea. It broke me. Now I wait anxiously every week for a new episode.
love how this just slipped into my recommendations, went to check it out and got me crying literally in the first minutes of the first episode
Bruh I have no idea that this anime even existed, but just watching this review made me CRY SO DAMN HARD 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
LIAR
every episode of this show is a reason to cry. i've never rooted for an anime character to badly in a long time
Absolutely an underrated channel! This was great and now I want to go watch Ranking of Kings! =)
I love this show!! And the last episode was so good! I can't believe that cliffhanger!!
When I saw Bojji and his backstory and stuff I felt so bad for the kiddo and the 1st OP ohhh that hits the spot it's so sad his father took his giant power
Edit: Yeah I hated Hilling but now I see more of her I like her
I haven't watched any anime for so long sincei stopped but one thing I noticed that makes the show so interesting is it's realism, yes there's some fictional elemennts but events that happen seem to be very realistic to happen such as not being actually overpowered during the duel but only being able to show his potential and more.
Not only is the story amazing, but the art / animation style is so shapely and fluid. I really enjoy fairy tales and this story had me hooked and it also felt super familiar to me from the start.
Gives me in depth reviews that actually give me new perspectives , ya got me
Im glad you enjoyed it!
got choked up just from ur explanation… man what a show!
This manga took me in the first two episodes as well.
I like the anime it super clean and i like that the antagonist even have good story the anime literaly made me cry
you have a gift of story telling. looking for more great intros. thanks to you I am onto this anime now, peace
this show is so good dude couldn't agree more.
Спасибо за видео, начал смотреть, хорошо рассекаюшь речью)
Looking for good anime was like a treasure hunt. You never find one after ages but when you do, it's amazing
9:10 I LOVE THIS GUY! :D
9:38 This was honestly the most UNSETTLING scenes I've seen in a WHILE!
And the 2. Op is pretty much one of the best I've ever experienced - The Song, the Visuals & the Themes combined are just Beautiful
I totally agree that ROK respects the viewers' time. Being one that grew up with big shonen animes, it was so refreshing watching something that tells you so much in less than 25mins. and at the same time, keeps the mystery of the plot.
Ayooo mad respect for the TTGL backgrounds, pierce those heavens
I can see it bro, you’re gonna pop off soon with this content. Video analysis is so popular nowadays and you have high quality videos. Keep on going
Really appreciate that brother
Thanks for the crack my brotha you just got a new sub
Well if this was good I would highly HIGHLY recommend reading "reverend insanity" the manga had been dropped because government forced the creator to discontinue it, but you can read the full novel online.
Never thought of watching it until now, thanks😁🤙🏼
im glad im not alone when i thought straight up hilling was gonna be a bad guy.
Why do you have this little amount of subscribers, this was something I expected from a 100k channel, keep up the great work!
Thank you very much. Hopefully I can prove you right someday soon!
Yeah Ranking of Kings is my favourite anime too its soo cool and i always wait for the next episode and i am always excited i recomend it very much to yall
