What's funny is that the anime isn't trying to be groundbreaking or innovating with never-before-seen concepts and themes. It instead sticks to the basics and refine those basic aspects before it tries and tackle something new and fresh.

That's exactly it. The theme of the anime is so very familiar and yet so captivating. I mean we have the common western fantasy lore like the giants prowess, the evil step brother, the sinister devils and such living beneath the ground and a magic mirror. We are familiar with all of it in one way or another. It's the polish that makes the difference, so that we once again learn, that we do not yearn for "new" stories, but for "better crafted" stories.

I just realized, the art style, the way it's written, it's literally like a child's storybook being read by an adult. There's adult themes, but the story is simple enough, the art is simple enough, that a child can follow and identify that life's not so simple as black and white, but the actions and direction, the motivations for a character are what pushes people to do the things that they do.
Man, if there was an anime I'd ever show my kid, it's probably Ousama Ranking because it so fucking masterfully crafts a world that feels real, despite the magic, but a compelling story of characters that aren't as simple as they look.

Fun fact, the author of the manga was initially trying to make a picture book for children (from a note at the end of Volume 2 of the manga, also mentioned at ANN interview).
So yes, this is a story for children but also give us, the adult, rollercoaster of emotion. What a masterpiece.

Parent characters are so underrated. A lot of times they're either dead before the story begins, purely good, or purely bad and aren't really treated as actual people or allowed to be characters with arcs. I like how both Hilling and Bosse love Bojji and Daida, yet are still flawed and hurt them in ways they didn't mean to, which is true of most parents. Hilling was initially set up to be the evil stepmom archetype who wants her blood son to usurp the throne, but we learn that she does really love Bojji as her own. She just doesn't believe in him because of his disabilities and set up Daida as king to protect Bojji from the responsibility. Which is something that hurt Bojji, but it's a mindset a lot of parents of disabled children have.
Bosse is initially set up as the caring father who believed in Bojji before his death. But then it's revealed that he knowingly sacrificed his son for power, without realizing the weight of his actions until he was born. He's the reason Bojji is so weak and became that caring father figure out of guilt. And when he's resurrected in Daida's body, he still seems guilty about sacrificing another son. But what he plans to do about it is still unclear.

That was just one of the many ways this anime subverted my expectations, which it has done at nearly every turn!

Honestly, I love how the series plays with expectations of who cares about Bojji and who doesn't in an authentic way that doesn't subert expectations for expectations sake. This is a SPOILER for like idk lets just say up until episode 7. We're introduced to Hiling and think she's evil when honestly, she's just suuuuuuuper protective of Bojji. She's blunt and rude, at least in the introduction, but she clearly knows that being king isn't to be taken lightly and honestly at that time Bojji wasn't fit for the job.
On the flip side we find out that the king was going to take over Bojji's body and transfer his strength into it, on top of finding out that he basically screwed his future child who became Bojji in order to gather enough peace to protect the land that would become his kingdom. He was going to use Bojji which is why he wanted him to be king (though it's also probably because Bojji is the child of his first love as well). Both situations ended up being the complete opposite of how the character's were introduced and neither feel cheap or done just because plot twists are trendy.

You know how in anime there's a ton of filler shit like catering to fans with big tit shots? This anime doesn't waste it's time with shit like that and, instead, focuses everything into creating a wonderfully woven masterpiece of a story.

The thing with Bojji is that he wasn't "Born that way", his strength was stolen from him by his father and the whole reason he was born was for that reason. The fact that he keeps moving forward with a smile on his face even though nobody respects him is why im more emotionally invested in him than any other anime hero.

I would like to think that Bojji could still have been born deaf and mute even if his strength/potential/power (depends on translation) was not stolen from him. It's not like Bosse has extraordinary voice/hearing apart from being a literal giant iirc

As someone who has read all the available chapters in japanese as well as the anime, I can unequivocally state, the anime is a vast improvement to the manga. Other than the obvious improvements such as color, sound and animation, the anime script is so much better. If you read the manga, you will see that the mangaka has a very rough way of doing exposition, he tends to reiterate points he's established early on, and sometimes the way he moves b/w time scenes can be a bit jarring at times. Most of these issues are very well addressed in the anime making it much more concise without losing any of the substance from the manga. 10/10 would recommend.

You know... I've gotta admit, the idea of a character with realistic flaws and having to deal with a world where those flaws get him looked down upon really appeal to me.
Sure, seeing the character with the lack of superpowers rise up and prove people wrong (albeit gaining a superpower from someone else) is nice or the village pariah being able to become a respected and powerful leader.
But seeing a character that I can clearly see and relate to in a sense is... honestly really nice. Bojji is realistically disabled like me (Autism) and trust me when I say this, I know what it's like to have people look down upon you.
I also know what it's like to try and rise up to prove them wrong. So I honestly hope Bojji is able to rise above everyone else and become a king worth respecting just for the sake of getting a major win.
Not just because 'Oh, that's his dream' or 'That's what he represents' but just because the boy should get his victory through effort and hardwork.

The animation is so smooth. It’s based on a manga and likely will adapt the first part or most of it. Daida despite his fathers wishes although Bojji... it’s just a simplistic style that resembles some time between the 70s to 90s. And such smooth Sakuga and facial expressions that you wouldn’t see in old anime. And the story is much darker than it appears. Also a lot of name puns

  • @FUBUKANI23

What's amazing about it isn't trying to stand out just like cash grab anime were studio choose popular or “cool character design" that can be used to get some merchandise sells. WIT could have choose other popular manga but they chose this. This feels really like old animes where its more of an art/plot/story appreciation. Another “childlish" looking anime art style that once you thought it would be just a daily love and happy story just to found out it can consider as 18+ anime.

  • @TimmyDaTurtle
    @TimmyDaTurtle 2 года назад +33

I feel like the artstyle is genuinelly refreshing, as it feels like many animes that come out now have very similar artstyles that make it hard for me to form an interest in them.

As someone who has grown up with a learning disability, it was nice to see a story where the parents isn't really all out bad. But ends up feeling they need to "protect" their child or finds it hard sometimes to believe in what potential they have because they've been told to expect less. That said even Hiling wasn't really fully aware of how much Boji had developed since her attention turned to Daida. That first scene feels excessively cruel first viewing, but if you go back - she at least understands that Boji should know the expectations of him but doesn't know he can read her lips when she's said the harshest thing she could ever say to his face (but knows enough to request it not be translated to Boji...)

  • @zenithmaiden2109
    @zenithmaiden2109 2 года назад +47

Honestly, for me the story telling, the world building, and the characters are all paced and placed exactly where they need to be. There's minor background the viewer understands as they continue to watch, but the important parts are never lost in translation at first glance from the narrative perspective so the viewer understands what's going on. I'm definitely taking notes! But the thing that caught me was not only the simplistic retro art style that feels so cozy and nostalgic, but this is the first time I've seen a protagonist with a disability where it's something that's acknowledged and interacted with realistically and not glossed over with some kind of power gain or suspension of disbelief.
I'm mesmerized by the hand animation as the characters sign as they speak - something that I feel the simple art style does wonders to allow - because it's such a minor detail that's huge and often completely overlooked in other anime. Through it you realize how much it effects Bojji and creates this sense of vulnerability and attachment to his character and how fragile he seems...It's inspiring that Bojji himself is the first to remind everyone through his actions - even the viewers - that he's not fragile for having his own way of doing things. He doesn't need pity. Just a friend to join him on his journey.
I cannot wait to watch the rest of this!

Everyone forgiving Miranjo, the one who was the evil mastermind behind everything, including planned murder on children and pretty much torturing Daida, only for him to develop Stockholm syndrome and wanting to Marry a Woman who is over 20 years older than him is the shitiest ending of a Manga i have seen since the OG Attack on Titan

Thanks for this review. I haven't thought much about the animation style. What draws me to this anime is the story that all of us can easily relate to. The protagonist can easily pull the heartstrings of viewers as he struggles his way to the world that is full of betrayal, inequity, and prejudice, which, all of us somehow experience at certain moments in our lives. But at the same time he finds a few who believes in him and treats him with dignity, respect and love. To a lesser or greater degree, there's a little Boji in all of us who painfully wants to be loved and treated right. Hang in there buddy. No matter what happens, we can make it through. 🙂

Honestly I just kinda gave the show a shot after hearing good things from friends and i can genuinely say its a show that is worth the time. I must say the two things the show has done that has me hooked is 1) everything it felt like it was setting up in the beginning honestly has nothing to do with story that ends up being told, it builds your expectations towards one way and then after one particular episode and scene it flips all of it on its head and you never really know where its going to go from that point and 2) the world this show takes place in is just so interesting. there's essentially no explanation to the rules or lore of this world and its honestly one of my favorite parts. It requires you too pay attention to the little details and hope you're able to piece together certain stories by yourself and I love that. The world is so vast and has so much story left to tell it feels like. I cant really recommend this show enough its truly amazing

I need to catch up with the show again, but after watching some of this show I was able to form a solid opinion. Bojii is by all traditional means and systems a complete failure, he is physically weak and frail. And considering he is a giant, laughably small. But all that adversity created such a vibrant and beautiful soul. Sure he cant beat you in a power battle, but in speed and precision Bojii just looks effortless and untouchable. And its well known that all the strength and power in the world is useless if you can not land a blow on your opponent. His spirit is kind and gentle, but when needed he stands tall as he needs be and you are subtly reminded this is not a boy THIS IS A GIANT. He WILL rise up. And when he does so, you feel a sense of pride for he is the one you said is worthy of being called the strongest king.

This anime was so refreshing, it reminded me of Durarara in a way, every character has like 50 backstories and development arcs, and there's so many of them. Who ever wrote the story is really good at developing their characters and shaping the story based on how they develop/act, rather than what most writers make the mistake to do, which is shape the characters to fit into a specific story that they want to happen in a specific way. The Witcher netflix show is a prime example of what bad writing does, they have the books to base their scripts on, yet they hired some horrible writers who wanna rewrite what made The Witcher into a masterpiece, and then we end up with quotes from that dumb lady Lauren something "We wanted someone to die in this episode, so we had to change how some characters acted to make it happen".
Also a pretty good indicator as to why Anime is taking over, while Hollywood is going downhill. It's hard to have such good material and screw it up, like Game of Thrones did in the last few seasons, and so many other shows. Anime does it too (Tokyo Ghoul), but they realize that sticking to the original story is usually a good thing, when the original story is what was popular in the first place.

People are overlooking the flaws in the anime. The story was good but it was a whole bunch of things that made absolutely no sense. One example is near the end when Boji fights bosse. Why did Bosse wack everyone with his club, heal them only to fight them again. Why does one of the big four do exactly what miranjo wants and even try to protect her at the end. Why did Bosse keep fluctuating between helping miranjo and not at Random moments. Why the heck does the queen leave the castle when they tell her it's going to be an attack on her life only to go back to the castle days later.

It was great but it does have its flaws. One of them is the fact that it was really quick to have characters killed but immediately revived for the power balance to continue. Overall, this anime gives the same vibes as Power Rangers, having the simplicity of a shonen plot.
But the strongest point about this anime, is that it builds the characters extremely well, they force you to cheer them till the end of their journey. You WANT EVERYONE TO WIN, and these conflicted feelings leaves you wanting more.
