  • Ranking of kings is the reason I still watch seasonal anime. Once every few years you come across an anime that just nails everything and ranking of kings is that anime. In the beginning everybody agreed with me but now people have started saying that ranking of kings has gotten worse as its continued to air. But I ended up loving ranking of kings through its entire run. Today I talk about why I think people disliked ranking of kings and why I still love it.

    Kage leaves because he feels insecure, he always has. He’s an orphan, he’s cursed, he’s been despised and mistreated all his life since the murder of his clan, and suddenly he’s stuck with this kid, that’s even weaker than him and that Kage feels like he (Bojji) needs. He stays with Bojji because he wants to help him become king… and once Bojji becomes king, having an outcast assasin as your best friend isn’t the best image for a king. So he leaves, he feels he’s not needed anymore, and he’s always been alone, so it’s gonna be alright, right? In the end their friendship turns out to be bigger than that, and Bojji shows Kage that he is needed, but not as helping hand to become king, but as a friend to have adventures with.
    I really emphatized with Kage leaving, since sometimes, you just feel like you don’t belong anymore, and true friends are always there to bring you back… or to go with you.

    I feel my only big problem is pacing/stakes in the latter part of the show, with them relying on 'oh no this guy is dead, oh wait they're healed now' several times after each other.
    But honestly... It's not that big of an issue to me. I agree that the characters are the true shining stars in the show. Somehow even someone like Miranjo, who I had zero compassion for at first, broke my heart with the pain she's felt.

    • @theproutbrothers1055
      @theproutbrothers1055  2 года назад +23

      I agree with both of those points. It does seem to lighten the impact of a character possibly dying when they keep getting brought back from the brink of death but same it wasnt that big of a deal to me. Also I didnt know that it was possibly for me to get emotional over a character that did so many horrible things

    I felt Bocchi's power jump was VERY earned. What really helped was that the first person he had to go against seriously was someone he stood no chance against.
    My only problem was that Miranjo got off way too lightly. After all the suffering she caused I felt she needed *some* punishment for her actions, no matter her tragic background.
    Also, for the longest time I thought this was an original anime so I thought the story would be over by season's end, Odd Taxi style. If whatever comes after this season is even close to as good as what we've gotten so far though, I'll wait as long as it takes for its conclusion.

      My only issue is I wish he didn’t hop on her marrying him (I don’t even know if he realizes what it would entail). He never showed romantic interest in Miranjo (he’s a child), but he also is royalty growing up in the Middle Ages, if he’s old enough to be king, why not to marry? I don’t like how abrupt the whole thing was personally, but thinking back Miranjo was always there when he felt alone. In his head, and growing up. He also watched all of her life through Bos and who knows how much of his emotions were influenced by his father. I am going to choose to forget that scene until it gets expanded in another season

    The saving miranjo from the demon also felt a bit quick / rushed.
    As I was watching the anime I didn't know how many episodes there would be, so I thought it ended when miranjo got eaten, and that it would be a whole new arc in the next season to go and save her. And then it was just : poof, we break in, and save her. It felt too easy for what the stakes seemed to have built up to and how powerful the demon was made out to be up until that point.
    Still absolutely loved the show though.

      @@theproutbrothers1055 as an ademdum to your point on daida wanting to marry miranjo, this would also have been way more comprehensible if a whole story took place to save her, instead of this weird "wish" thing.
      Daida obviously understood something about miranjo when being stuck in his own mind, but some development would have been necessary to make this a love story per se.

      @@cpasta738 The way I see it, Daida had talked to Mirror Miranjo for a while, which is what caused the whole plot to happen, so it seems like they had some history before the show started. In the 2nd intro we see Daida and Miranjo, reading a book and talking with each other, and other scenes that we see along with them are Bojji and the Queen hugging and Kage and his mom being together. A nice collection of two people just being together and caring for one other which really stuck in my mind especially when people talk about the marriage coming out of nowhere. I do agree that getting her out of the demon was too fast for my liking and marriage proposal before dating is also weird, but I like it despite that.

    I started this anime kinda hating everyone and being like "oh so they're all some suckers that are making ma boy suffer and can't see his side or support him in anyway" then as the story was going little by little I was liking pretty much everyone, even Apeas that for me was the one who had some terrible development and I thought it was a plain boring character after seeing how he was devoted to Miranjo for some past reasons, but even him could change my mind entirely when he starts to go against this kinda pledge of faithfulness and show exactly what you said in the video, they're humans and humans make a lot of mistakes what shows if they're good or bad is how they feel and act after it.
    For me this is a masterpiece and I want more

      I think a lot of this show is about how people synthesize their loyalties, the influences within their culture, and their own personal sensibilities, into one worldview that balances those often conflicting desires. they don't always get the balance right, but it's fascinating to watch them try.
      the culture of the world within ranking of kings prioritizes personal strength and might, in order to prove one's proficiency, unless you're the type who serves someone like that... but even Bosse, who is touted as the real number one strongest guy, if he were to take up the title... is actually a good example of how this cultural influence can lead people astray. like, I don't think Bosse felt unfulfilled after beating a god _just_ because he didn't earn it... that may have been a factor, but I think the more important thing is that he had nothing left to strive for. he was at the top of the food chain, the best there was, he got exactly what he wanted, but... then what? that experience reveals to him that he was only developing his power for the sake of having it. he didn't really have a worthy cause to use it for. not until Boji was born.
      the fact that Boji was born so incredibly weak, specifically because Bosse took his strength, presents Bosse with an opportunity to use his power for the benefit of someone who needs it. and Bosse isn't exactly a stranger to this scenario. when he was caring for Miranjo, it was out of a sense of duty to her, because Bosse killed her dad. and eventually, he began to care because Miranjo and her mother were kind and innocent. they deserved to be safe, even if they didn't have the power to ensure their safety themselves. when the townspeople hurt Miranjo, laying her as low as possible, making her as weak as possible... that inspired Bosse to act. it is really the weakest, most downtrodden people, who motivate the actions of the strongest man alive.
      and all of this is to say: this kind of knowledge is what a character needs in order to be a good leader. and when a leader doesn't have that knowledge, then their followers might be foolish to have faith in them. I think Domas is the clearest indication of what this means. he literally explained his philosophy regarding loyalty, to Hokuro. he said that a king's job is to make all the considerations that go into a difficult or problematic decision, before passing that down as an order to his loyal subordinates. when a decision is passed down to a king's subordinates, it is appropriate to assume that those considerations have already been made. so then the job of someone like Domas is simply to do what he's told. and honestly, when Bosse was king, this might've been a fine outlook... Domas could follow Bosse's orders, because he knew that Bosse wouldn't lead him astray, or make him do anything horrible. the same cannot be said for Daida... at least not prior to getting possessed by Bosse. Daida ordered Domas to kill Boji... it's such an awful thing to do, but Domas also tries to do it out of that sense of misguided loyalty. it's never failed him before. this may be the first time in his life that he's ever suspected it would go poorly. and it almost takes Domas too long for him to realize that his loyalty in Daida was misplaced. there was almost more irreparable damage than Domas could ever expect to heal. Domas can't trust Daida not to ask this of him in the first place.
      and the problem is that Daida doesn't understand why he wants power like Bosse's. or rather, he doesn't know what he's meant to use it for. he wants power so that he can measure up to Bosse's image, which is a practice in futility, given that Bosse literally stole power from his son, to get where he is... that's the reason why Bosse is insurmountable. and this is what Bosse meant when he told Miranjo to take care of Daida, because Daida seemed a lot like Bosse when he was younger. Bosse didn't always know what he would want to use his power for either. altruistic kindness wasn't always Bosse's top priority. but both he and Daida have started from a place of wanting to seek prestige, and through their experiences, they've come to the conclusion that their power is for the protection of the weak, out of a sense of love.
      the fact that there is a ranking system for the kings of this world, means that most people will probably strive for power in pursuit of prestige or superiority first. and if they're ever going to have this realization, that their power is empty without a greater sense of purpose... it will always be a hard path, and there are probably a lot of kings who will never understand this at all, and will only ever pursue power for the sake of their own prestige. and that means that there are a lot of people out there who will swear loyalty to kings who have terrible decision making criteria. what makes Boji unique in all the world, is that he's coming from a position of powerlessness. and that means that he's always understood what power should be used to accomplish. but along the way, you see people like Dorche, Bebin, Apeas, and Domas, who all have loyalties toward very different people, and synthesize those loyalties with their conflicting wants in very different ways. but all of them feel, in some way, like their loyalty is to someone who they want to believe in. and it becomes no wonder that they all eventually end up siding with Boji when the chips are down. even if, say, Apeas is loyal to Miranjo, or Bebin is loyal to Daida, or Dorche is loyal to Hiling... Boji doesn't hate any one of those people. the purpose of Boji's power will always be to find the least destructive path forward, and that's actually a fairly rare thing for a person in power to know how to commit themselves to.

    • @adrianoxerife9022
      @adrianoxerife9022 2 года назад +1

      @@loregoblin3854 I'd say a lot of this show is also "what power and strength really means" .
      We have the almighty Bosse who is the best in all and has a lot of physical strength, then we have Daida who Domas says that he can see the King's strength in him and he shows how strong he is by the beginning nothing like Bosse but you can clearly see Bosse's strength in him, then we have Bojji that for reasons unknown is absolutely weak, we know for a fact that he's no physically weak but also with a major weakness in communication ('cause he's deaf and also can't hear) so everyone sees him as weak and in Hiling's case something she must protect at all costs.
      Then as the story goes we see that Bojji actually do understand everything that they say to him and also he pretends he does not in a way to not make everyone feel some kind of pity for him , we can see this as some kind of strength , the strength to take it all in and don't show how what he hears actually hurt him as we see in the scene he tries to pick the sword and is crying his eyes out.
      After some episodes we see that Bojji cut down a big rock and we are inclined to believe that Bojji got physically stronger, but again that's not the case, he doesn't have any so how could he improve? What actually happened is that Bojji's agility is a type of strength, but he could never believe in it or himself 'cause in the kingdom no one saw that as the way of who a King should fight, for them he was just running away from the fight.
      And by the final act we see that Bojji's bond with Kage is some kind of strength to him , that makes him move, same thing with Kage and how he desperately tries to save Bojji from Ouken. And to end it all we have the final fight of pure strength (Bosse) vs no strength (Bojji) and we see Bojji winning, showing to Bosse himself that he the most powerful being was defeated by a no strength boy.
      So the show makes you think, what really means to be strong?
      And the answer is something very personal to you, I'd say. For me I'd say that being stromg doesn't only means being physically strong as Bosse once thought and instead is the strength that you posses within yourself, the strength of being kind, the strength of never giving up , the strength to keep getting up, the strength to face dangerous perils, the strength to not falter while facing harder predicaments, the strength of your friends , family and how they getting hurt or supporting you make you act, make you to be strong for them.
      I only mentioned Bojji, Bosse and Kage but we can see those strengths and other types in other characters as the series go, and I really love that, it's inspiring in some way and is very philosophical.
      -Don't know if you could understand what I mean 'cause my English isn't perfect but I tried my best.

      @@adrianoxerife9022 yup, I understand your meaning just fine... you explained this really well.
      I think even the character designs of Boji and Bosse emphasize this quality... Bosse is huge, and regal, and he can look pretty intimidating. we see in his backstory that he can be kind, and he hasn't always perfectly known what he was doing, and he becomes a much more accessible character once you learn his history, but most normal people don't have access to that information. Boji on the other hand, comes off as not very intimidating at all. it's the reason why Kage felt like he could rob Boji, but it's also part of why Kage found it so easy to become Boji's friend. Boji is approachable because nothing about him looks scary. and if someone was to ask which of these two has the more desirable appearance, I think I'd say it's Boji. a king can base their power around brute force and intimidation, but it's much more peaceful and diplomatic to look kind and approachable. even just that can enhance the leadership style that a king intends to use.

    • @adrianoxerife9022
      @adrianoxerife9022 2 года назад +1

      @@loregoblin3854 Yeah, totally agree, the only scene we see Bojji in a intimidating way is when Despa says that he's practically invencible at the bar, and this can mean that now after getting "stronger" he can be seen as a potential threat to his enemies and how he's probably the "stronger" King that exists in the world or how he could potentially become the 1st King in the rankings

    • @loregoblin3854
      @loregoblin3854 2 года назад +1

      @@adrianoxerife9022 yeah, and even then, I think the emphasis is more on the fact that whatever method of "force" Boji has to use against other people, will be used in service of the things we already know he values. the show develops our ability to trust Boji first... long before it ever gives him power. or rather, Boji has had the ability to develop his values in life, long before he had the power to change anyone's mind about anything. it's important that Boji developed the way he did, so he could know what to do with his strength once he has it.

    Kage doesn't think he's good enough for Bojji now that Bojji doesn't "need" him anymore. Kage leaving may not have made narrative sense and may have been uncomfortable, but for me it made perfect emotional sense for that character. It was heartbreaking, but it felt right.
    It also ended on Bojji choosing to be with Kage because Kage was his friend, and not because of any sense of loyalty. Kage finally had someone choose to be with him for him, not because of what he could provide them. It was important for his character to feel wanted.

    About Kage leaving i was annoyed, but it did make sense giving that most of the Growth, Confidence, and overall empowerment was given to Bojji, Kage was along the ride, but looking at what we know of him, he lived a very rought time, and what he had seen it that he has a specifict purpose and that once is fulfilled he isnt wanted or needed anymore, Bojji didnt have anyone at the beggining, but he has now many people on his side, and while Bojji grew a lot in his journey we cant say thatt abou Kage, he didnt got any training from Despa, nor has previous training or much education, he still doesnt have any family or clan, he isnt very strong, and comparing his skills and what he could offer (wich seems to be how he believes people relates to him), he loses in every aspect to the current allies bojji had form, and he also knows that his clan is stigmaticed, so he completed the mission that was assigned, and seeing how his friend was no longer helpless and lonely, he just thought that his own value has run out and leaves before they can kick him out, still i was screaming to the screen the whole time but it makes sense

    Great points about this masterpiece.
    As an animator myself, I have to say, the true unsung hero of this anime is Wit Studio ! Sure the writing is fantastic, and the VA have done a great job, but truly, it was thanks to the talent of WIT's animators that brought such a "children's book" style (that everybody just skipped on by seeing the first poster) truly to life. Everybody is raving about the sakugais, but I'd say, their true moments of grace is everytime a character starts crying, their animators just SELL it !!!
    Rare are the animes that keep such a quality consistency all throughout the entire season. And WIT just delivered !

In those last moments, it wasn't an attempt to say she was all better now but that she was ready to be better. Hence the promise she makes to her childhood friend that she'll find a way to save her. So in that sense, I think the main feeling they wanted to convey was hope

    Miranjo got off easily, Kage suddenly left Bojji and everyone too forgiving about Miranjo's crime.
    I agree with what u said about Kage.
    I understand Miranjo's pain n why she did that but just because she had sad past, it didn't justified her crimes.
    About the forgiveness, Bojji also took time to finally forgive Domas. While it is good that Miranjo is forgiven, not even one character felt somewhat a bit reluctant to forgive. All a bit too quick to forgive this person who is the cause of the bad things that happened.
    I also feel the last episode a bit anticlimactic.
    I rarely watch anime nowadays so I'm so glad I chose to watch this one few days ago hehe

We see in the intro when he's in bed talking to the mirror how happy he seems. Maybe in those moments its the real side of her coming through. Yes its still a kid asking for an adult woman's hand in marriage but its feels like its more from necessity

    I understand the hate for Miranjo, but I also in a sense recognize parts of her character as what I might be like if I had a significantly worse childhood or got really bitter about poor treatment. I think most of her character arc is handled pretty well with my exception being her death and getting rescued from the demon personally. I hope more people give the anime a shot over the years. I think the promotional art is ironically one of the biggest obstacles to the show's success.

    Personally the anime went a little too combat heavy for my liking but that's very much a taste thing. One gripe I did have was him being able to find weak points in objects. humans, make sense I can buy acupuncture but with the object weak points about atoms and stuff it was a bit hard of a believability pill to swallow for me. The characters still stayed as strong as they started out for the most part and this anime will hold a very high ranking on my list.

    Acceptance recognition validations is now used against us to conform and perform

    1:47-3:00 your description about progression made bojji's character feel a LOT more realistic. U could constantly try to improve ur skills but your progression might not be a lot unless your have the correct information/proper guidance/teaching from someone, which is VERY much like Bojji's situation as he's been working hard on his skills like you stated. Domas's style of teaching was not suited for bojji, but luckily despa provided the necessary info for him to improve.

  • @algar1987

    the story and the characters were good but bojji's skills were bullshit to me and it felt very cheap. i would've liked it if they confronted the demon early on about the curse rather than a gary stu super powers. king bosse should've looked for a way to reverse the curse before he died or try to gain same wishes from the demon like how despa did it. i just felt so conflicted on how things should've happen in the second season. in the end, i thought king desha was best character during the conflict.

  • @maggie6305

    I absolutely loved everything about the show. However I had issues with the ending, more specifically with Miranjo. I certainly do sympathize with her for what she went through in her youth. But I still don't think she deserved to live a "second chance" (as a queen, no less lol) after everything that she did. She basically got a slap on the hand for being a serial killer. This portrays the idea of forgiveness in a very unrealistic sense. Would you easily forgive someone who shot up a school and killed others simply because they had personal trauma and didn't know any better? No, of course not. These turn of events is as ridiculous as turning that school shooter into the school's principal.

    With kage what he did at the end does line up with his character. It goes with what he has said about himself the entire series. It wasn't until boji went after him that we stopped hearing him talk badly of himself in comparison to boji.

      Kage says he’s going to always br in Bojjis corner and that he’s his best friend so leaving doesn’t match up with that. He also doesn’t think badly of himself when he leaves he tries to hold himself to a higher standard and get honest work. He only leaves bojji because he thinks bojji is to great and busy as a king now which is not how bojji is obviously

    kinda weird to me people had these complaints about this show. If you actually understand people, then this show makes very much sense. How many times have we done things, that actually makes no sense. People aren't rational beings, they are intelligent animals so therefore will do shit sometimes that make no sense. This is probably one of my favorite animes ever. Simply because not everyone is so one dimensional, thats also reason I stopped watching most anime. They feel waaayyy too fake to me, like I can't connect with these fake acting characters.

    • @theproutbrothers1055

      People that have those complaints tend to think they are logical and do things that make sense. They haven’t taken a good look at themselves so they can’t relate to watching these characters because they have a view of themselves that is not based in reality.

    Don't get me wrong I believe in forgiveness, the goodness of people, etc that's why I decided to major psychology but imo Miranjo is just a unrealistic character if she was real pretty sure she wouldn't have went from villain to hero like that I think she would have already reached the point of no return mentally. Then again this is anime so realism isn't really a thing so imma just give her a pass. I think the writer is just trying to make a point about kindness and forgiveness even though he might be a bit unrealistic at times.

      @@theproutbrothers1055 just finished watching the vid, loved the analysis. regarding the last bit with Daida wanting to marry Miranjo... she never said yes. She just cried when he asked to marry her. I can imagine she's going through a ton of emotions.
      Her step-dad that she nearly burned a nation for just died for a second time, she just got ripped out of hell and now the kid she used as a meat puppet for her step-dad is asking to marry her. I'd cry too. Daida just needs to go to horny jail for sure, i think in those medieval times they have the story set in, he'd be considered an adult I guess.
      And Kage wanted to be in Bojji's corner because it seemed like no one was on his side. Towards the end, he couldnt hoist Bojji into the air, but everyone else did which made him feel left out and maybe thought, "Bojji doesnt need me anymore, he's got other people to be with him now" then goes on to say that's just an excuse where HE needs Bojji, but ends up leaving because of the stigma of being a shadowclan member. Pretty much i think he thought that Bojji didnt need him anymore because his job of being his support was done/ he'd be embarrassed to be by his side/ he's used to seeing his people get used and thrown away
