A Comedy Laced With Tragedy | Kotaro Lives Alone

  • The best way for me to describe Kotaro lives alone is a comedy laced in tragedy. This anime can make you cry and most people focus on how dark or sad it is but I also think there is so much in this anime that is happy and heart warming. I think I cried almost as much from happiness as I did from sadness. This is our review and reaction to Kotaro Lives Alone.

Anyone notice that he gave tissues as a present first episode. And neighbors usually bring a meal... Kotaro used to eat his tissues so he thought he was bringing a meal... So sad...

Have you noticed when Kotaro feels happy the black column in his eyes shows a white circle? His usual state is eyes with black columns devoid of any white. I think its to indicate emotions because Kotaro is not a very facial expressive character like the rest, he is more stoic, we see his emotions through his words, actions and eye column but not much by face.

    • @theproutbrothers1055

Yes we did notice that. We just didn’t mention it in the video because we already talked about his eyes for a while in this video.

Also, one of the best depictions of child development and the effects of child abuse in any show I've seen. Really made me reflect on not only my own experiences, but on other people around me. You never really know what someone's been through.

Honestly, my dream always was to to eventually become a parent. This show can tell you what wrongdoings a parent can do, like ignoring your kid or yelling at them. And it makes me sad because I just remembered my awful childhood full of yelling and ignoring. Bringing this topic to the table is amazing because you don't see shows showing child abuse as well as this show. This was personally my favorite show of this year☺️🥺

No matter who you are you will be able to relate to this kid. Something will touch you on such a deep level. Not one of my friends have watched it. No matter how I try to convince them. I am happy to see I was not the only one crying and laughing and left my mouth open at times. It is about betrayal from his good friend and judgment because the guy in the leopard suit was judged for looking and dressing out of the norm.

    • @lightyagami3492

I don't think Kotaro knows that his mother is dead because his gives the lawyers a file every week that depicts everything that he has done that week and even puts down his current height on the file as well which implies he knows the money must be coming from his mom but doesn't know that it's a life insurance.

I came looking for comedy after Kotaro is fighting the uncle. Not depression. There’s a lot of trauma, darkness and depression intermingled. The comments towards the mangaka character Karino in the series is a similar criticism to the series overall. Also from what I have heard, he may not necessarily be as young as we think he is. He may allegedly be older than we think he is.
Also what are your thoughts on the ending of ranking of kings?

And then my dad left me , he visited me sometimes but only when he is ill and need help , pretty sure he is death by now . My mom left me when i was 7 , and she gave birth to my little sister who is a decay younger than me ( i am fine with it tho since i was the one asked her to give me a sister ). Life is good but not always , i live with my grandparents and lets just say they are the typical Asia parents type , school wasnt that good but atleast i have friends. I do have a little hobby to relax : writting . BLs and fantasy stories , just kinda let my emotions gets to those sentences .

I thought maybe they're like sheep's or goats' eyes but that is wrong, too; the vertical length would lie horizontally. They seemed creepy to me initially, but now I kind of like them. I bet decades from now, anime/ manga characters with rectangular pupils will be a tired old trope... I love this show.

Honestly, I hadn't felt this deeply about anime characters since Violet Evergarden.

If you liked this show for it‘s combination of comedy and drama, might I suggest „Fruits Basket“? That show is great with that too. (I’d suggest watching the 2019 anime, not the 2001 one as that one isn’t very accurate to the manga).

I have seen it and read it. I did in fact enjoy fruits basket.

i just wish it was animated by a cuter studio. these netflix animated shows w horrid animation are just so sad because even if they're good they're hard to watch just because they're ugly

I see what you mean that it would be better if someone like Kyoto animation did it but I still think it’s better than never having the story. I don’t think it’s “ugly” enough to not enjoy the story.

@@theproutbrothers1055 well yeah of course, but it'll make most people ignore it outright i know i did at first, and just look what they did w the way of the househusband which is such a beloved manga like??? and it's not like the story would never be had because the manga is there (i haven't seen it but i assume it's easier on the eyes, i cld be wrong though) it's just sad to see it like this.
i guess it's like netflix's slice of life studio because the more serious anime are always better animated though i thiiink those aren't produced by them just distributed

Okay, first of all I'm 53 year of age and not a fan of anime. However as a grandparent of a 3 year old I was curious as to why a small boy was living alone. But what I thought you might cover was the memory of Kotaro being referred to as a girl. Did you catch that? I won't say which episode.

    • @theproutbrothers1055

Hmm no I can’t say that I saw anything that referred to kotaro as a girl. Can you elaborate?

Young child in Japan used to be referred to as gender less. Not sure if that's what it is.
