Is it weird that one of the small details I appreciate most about this series is how Reg rattles a bit when he moves? Like, you can hear the metal bits in his arms and legs clanking together every time the camera is close to him while he's moving and Idunno, I just find that to be an awesome little detail.
It personifies his imperfection and vulnerability. You'll notice so many more great details as you blaze thought it a second or even 3rd time. FYI there was suppose to be a 2nd season or film last I heard months ago, but I'm unsure if they moved forward with it or not...hoping they do as it's a very special little anime. One of my favs for sure...
@@denaze05 lolz, I did. I was curious how many people thought the same but didn't really see many people reading my comment so I posted it on two videos
Agree, do we wanna talk on how DAMN BEAUTIFUL is Hanezeve Caradhina or simply the opening? I can't belive I came to watch this masterpiece only now despite I heard A LOT of people talking about it, I literally thought I would not like the way characters looked or just a story based on explorers and an abyss. Well I ended up loving all of this, searching nanachi 3d models to make her dance on mmd, downloading every ost, searching every possible cosplay that has been made about MiA etc. It's been 3 years I haven't been involved so much in an anime.
@@TankyThunderpaw I third every thing here especially with the hanezeve caradhina song. It just adds so much more to a world that's all ready sad ,happy, and cruel.
Can't agree enough, the score is often neglected in anime if music isn't the main premise. Might sound weird but it was honestly scary to me how well-matched the ost was for the anime. Kevin Penkin is just something else
What I love about Made in Abyss is the proper take on cosmic horror. The threat here isn't a person isn't an entity or any object, it's the world itself, purely beyond reason and understanding.
What is fantastic here is that it takes the essentials of cosmic horror, but uses them so creatively. This is cosmic horror, but it isn't a Lovecraft clone. Tsukushi has taken the core of cosmic horror - the sense of being menaced by something that is maddeningly incomprehensible and inconceivably greater than one's self (and at once, indifferent to one's self) - and constructed something wholly different to the Cthulhu mythos. Moreover, what I love here, is the slow dawning of the horror. It's there from the very beginning, but the audience is left to experience it gradually as more and more is revealed. That just makes it so much more effective.
@@MrMuel1205 The thing is it's equal parts fear and wonder, the idea that perhaps there _is_ something here that could eventually be understood even if no one person could ever hope to do it. It's not so much fearful cosmic irrelevance as it is a bunch of cavemen trying to figure out how a 747 works. And it's airborne.
I think the thing that sets the Abyss apart in cosmic horror is that while it’s terrifying and unknowable, it’s simultaneously beautiful and enticing. Despite the dangers and curses, it draws you in and makes you want to explore it, to discover its many secrets.
The more i see these amazingly animated shows the more i want to see Mistborn or stormlight animated haha, Sandersons worldbuilding and magic systems are perfect for it
From what i understood, the bird-like monster doesn't reanimate corps like mentioned in this vid, but it will mimic the last sounds that an animal makes before dying, which is usually a cry for help. Hoping to lure animals of the same species who would want to help.
Most anime, especially isekai, should take notes from MiA on how to handle worldbuilding. And more anime should try to experiment with new art styles to see what suits it's atmosphere. The contrast between the cute chibiness of the characters and the horrifying bizarreness of the creatures of abyss is so geniusly done in this anime. The art alone was what got me to give episode one a chance.
Isekai has huge, barely tapped potential, where a character is thrown into a world they can't rationalise. Usually, they're placed in a world following Game logic, with the handicap of an incredible ability. In those, the protagonist catches on too quickly and has an easy life. What should be done is placing them in a world that doesn't resemble their own in any way or form. Made in Abyss is completely absurd to us, the viewers, because we can't make any sense of it at all. It holds mysteries we can't fathom, has a structure that's certainly not natural, and a strange ability to entice people. Placing a character from our world into a place like that would invoke thoughts like "that could happen to me, or anyone, at any time.", which would be terrifying and also incredibly exciting. That position of complete powerlessness and confusion, and rising up from it, that is a story rarely told in isekai. The main character being from our world too, with no cheats, would make viewers respect the protagonist, truly, as we compare ourselves to them as the story moves along. (Not to say no shows have done this, or at least some of it)
@@Zaire82 Omg, that's what always gets me with Isekai! Books like Alice in Wonderland and the Chronicles of Narnia are literally Isekai, just written, and they are classics. The concept of Isekai is amazing and has been watered down into repetitive tropes that are made bareable by weird one-off concepts. I'm a bit tired of the usual, very European-esque fantasy that Isekai always uses. Why not try exploring other fantasy aspects as a base? An Isekai with a setting in Japanese mythology could be so cool.
@@familyguysofunny1933 Lots of profit. That's why there are dozens of isekai there are all the same. Even the ones which are sattire of them. And they aren't that funny. When something is a joke and even a joke about it isn't funny... It's bad!
I remarathoned the show a while ago and made an interesting connection: many of the symptoms experienced by ascent are similar to what is experienced by divers resurfacing. I mean, not the whole deforming into a rabbit kangaroo/mess of flesh part, though the pressure at a certain depth would definitely cause a body to distort into an unliveable state.
I did the math, assuming earth like atmosphere the lowest they could go and live sustainably would be about seven kilometers iirc, somewhere at seven atmospheres of pressure. It's interesting to note that the mutated children resemble what happens to a blobfish when you bring it rapidly to the surface and have it suffer severe tissue degradation as a result.
could you theoretically suffer a form of reverse bands from descending from a high place to quickly? like if you claimed 10000 feet, then ran all the way back down, would you get some form of pressure sickness?
when you pointed out how the abyss has eyes, i just immediately realized that their entire town could be built around its asshole and the entire population just has these elite colonoscopy agents in search of rump treasure
they consistently speak on bodily functions (specifically the anus) several times throughout the series, so I think you might actually be onto something lolol
its wierd if u think about it cuz if the abyss was a monster and the bottom was the head then what happend if the abysses asshole where to clench? like everythong inside the top layre would be destroid
"The Abyss is indifferent to them" Combing this with the fact that the lower layers resemble a living creature it's pretty save to assume this is some lovecraft shit.
I was surprised how similar the "secret" lore that gets uncovered as the characters uncover in-setting "conspiracies" ended up being between MIA and Dungeon Meshi, with dungeons/the abyss being layered pits that are like giant pitcher plants for humans, using abstract objects of desire as the nectar to draw people deeper, and then feeding off of and metabolising those desires themselves as the organism's fuel.
Tbh I got Uzumaki vibes the first time I watched it. It has the "Fear of the unknown" principle applied quiet well and there is that constant feeling of dread throughout the show. I'd go as far as to interpret the show as Riko's suicide since it is heavily hinted that she has been upset about her mother's death(?).
@@tr-qr7pw since youre acting obnoxious though ill confirm for you that even most middling manga is better than the best drivel your guy managed to put out. cant believe that hp lovecraft is the thing you decided to be a snob about but you probably got this opinion from some video essay and i cant blame you for that. loser
that's what I did too. got to the point where this vid starts getting spoiler-y then downloaded the anime then binge watched it. as someone said, who needs sleep, right?
When I first saw the art-style, I thought Made in Abyss would be like Pokemon or something, so I didn't give it a go until just recently. Boy, was I wrong.
Honestly, same. During the season it was airing, I just avoided it on the idea that it looked somewhat kiddy. A couple weeks in, I gave it a try and really liked it. When I finished it, I had to call it a 10/10. And I don't hand those out very often. And I've seen many anime in the last few years, with none coming quite as close to Made in Abyss, in my eyes. It just went above and beyond.
Tbf, the age of Made in Abyss characters are the same as the age of Hunter X Hunter protagonists. I'd argue that the world Gon lives in is equally as dangerous as Made in Abyss's characters.
“What exactly are these strange, eye-shaped formations at the bottom of the abyss, and why is the chasm starting to resemble a large, gaping mouth?” How are you always so great at giving me chills
The corpse weeper does not reanimate but mimic if i recall correctly. The most terrifying about this is the fact that this is a feasible behavior for a bird to learn in real life. Facts regarding this: Bodily feats: Some birds are capable of mimicking a wide range of sounds(including speech, some species of parrots are famous for this but other birds can do this too) Lot's of birds are predators and/or scavengers. Intelligence samples: Crow's for example are known to use traffic lights in order to use cars to crack nuts. Some birds prey on turtles by cracking them via dropping. Some birds that are able to mimic human speech have been proven to be able to use a limited pool of words in an intelligent fashion. Yes, as in basic communication. So corpse weepers are actually not impossible. But highly unlikely as this would require at least 2 somewhat intelligent species evolving close to each other without one eradicating the other. As the birds would have to coevolve this abilty along a prey species that actually responds to calls for help but is not intelligent enough to get rid of or avoid the birds. Rather specific niche, but far from impossible from my understanding.
Not that anyone cares but the soundtrack for Made in Abyss was recorded in Vienna at the synchron stage vienna( it's the most modern orchestra hall for recording music. Although it was built by the Nazis) I am very proud of my hometown. Great series and great soundtrack.
Something I feel a lot of people miss is that (1) the abyss is over 20,000 meters deep which is cool when you really think about that (that's 43 empire state buildings) and (2) while there is a map its the only "unexplored" place left in the world, no one knows whats below the seventh layer or how deep the seventh layer goes, that's the farthest anyone been able to get info on, you see that on the map as well. for all, we know it goes WELL past the 20,000-meter mark and may have upwards of 9 or 10 layers that just haven't been communicated. Also it feels like a part one kinda deal because it is, second season broski's
im tormented with anticipation to see the seventh layer so ive started trying to read the manga. but jsut not the same as seeing it in a full color animation. really looking forward to the second season
So like the abyss is just like Satan eating people right? It's definitely a living thing, and it definitely tries to force people into its depths for some unknown reason
@@lupin2589 which reminds me. i swear i saw somewhere an theory, either mentioned by an overanalyst or one of the side characters, that most of the artifacts the characters dig up might actually be created by the abyss itself as bait to get people to jump in
@@gusty7153 oh yeah, that would totally make sense. Or like the birthday illness thing, where you die on your birthday but as soon as you're physically away from the abyss you're totally fine. It's pushing you into the abyss so strongly that it kills you to resist.
3:14 Holy Shit he did THAT painting!? I had that on my desktop back in 2007! It was one of the most captivating pieces I'd ever seen, but later I lost it and didn't know how to find it again, then eventually forgot about it. Now in '20 here it is all of a sudden!
Absolutely agree. I love world building. But I hate the fact that most isekai anime (and similar) waste this potential. So Made in Abyss did a phenomenal job with it!
@@kirkvj8330 Oh boy here we go. Mushoku Tensei is an absolute master class in world building not only in establishing the geography of its world, but also the systems that govern its world. Like the intricate design of how magic works and how it affects its world around it. Or how the social interaction between its races defined by the long history of conflicts. I could go on...
Finished the entire season in one sitting. The world building is just so good that at the end of every episode I wanted to experience more of it. 6 hours later and I'm left craving for more, only to find out that season 2 hasn't been confirmed (yet)... I'm rarely so invested in a show that I genuinely wish for another season. But I'm wishing.
Firefox is red, Explorer is blue. Google+ sucks and Chrome does too. Try reading the manga, it will fill your urge to get more Made in Abyss (and next arc is one hell of ride like the video mentions), it will help you wait until next season is created (And if you want to help the show try to buy the manga volumes and the show when it's out on DVDs or Blurays)
Romano Coombs You do realize Attack on Titan anime isn't over and is getting a 3rd season next year, and in the manga the basement mystery is already resolved and we moved past it many chapters ago (will probably be in the next season if pacing is fast enough), so most of what you are saying here makes no sense at all. As for Made in Abyss it will be getting a 2nd season if Manga and 1st season sales are good enough, many people who worked on the show expresses their wish for a 2nd season to be greenlit, which will probably happen as soon as there is enough manga material for a 12 ep 2nd season and the sales numbers are in next year after the first manga vol is released in english, until then don't go assuming the "mystery of the show will never be resolved", that's not the case here or in Attack on Titan. And do you understand that spacing out anime seasons like this for shows based on ongoing manga is a harsh but much much better than the older trashy and cheap practice of creating fillers or entire seasons of anime original content just to keep the show going on fumes until new manga material is made (Naruto and Bleach are particularly guilty of this), let's be thankful for this change instead of bitching about it.

It’s interesting how the darkness in made in abyss is handled. It’s not like insanely, horribly, berserk dark. it’s like Pokémon dark, but if you took the subtext and put it right in front of you. Horrible creatures are eating each other and everyone’s getting diseases. Scary, sure, but it’s just nature. That’s what’s gonna happen if you throw 2 kids out into the wilderness. Also, this would make a SICK videogame.
@@kaen4299 well, I referenced pokemon due to lots of people being shocked at its “hidden” or “in the background” dark moments while they aren’t so shocking, bc it’s nature
The art style of the characters really works in this regard as well. The protagonists are small and drawn in a chibi style, with round faces and expressive eyes and mouths. They are impossibly adorable, which is in stark contrast to the unforgiving coldness of the Abyss. You really feel this strong urge to keep them safe and protected, because they're so innocent! It's nearly unbearable to watch these two go through the layers of the Abyss. Also, don't talk to me about episode 13. I'm still not over it
curse you Bondrewd! I haven't seen the manga or the third movie, and i most likely won't see the second season until far later, but based on the panel of the manga showed later off in the video, Bondrewd had part of his helmet smashed in, so hopefully some karma gets to him.
@@oidontmesswithmycountry54 you see Bondrewd’s head get bashed in the third movie. The first two are just recaps for the first season. It’s honestly a great movie
The fact to make them kids is such a smart move, like you said, the level of anxiety and tension is far greater than it would be if the main charactes were adults.
Prushka and in a way nanachi and all the white whistles were made in abyss too. Also (spoilers if you arent up to date on the manga, even if youve seen dawn of the deep soul) One of the two mitties was just straight up MADE there... somehow
A few theories I've come up with. Lyza is likely to sacrifice herself to give Riko the blessing in order to return. Ozen may follow the same path, or possibly even sacrifice her apprentice. But the biggest one i've come to realize, the Abyss seems to have been growing for tens of thousands of years. It may even be viable to say for every 1m you travel down, is 1 year's worth of growth. The birthday disease seems to have been affecting the town for centuries, to the point where there is evidence of the disease from bodies dated 2000, 4000, and 6000 years ago. Each buried directly underneath the city. It may be even more likely that this is a sign of some sort of growth every 2000 years. This is also supported by Bondrewd being interested in something "more than the bottom", something about "the next 2000 years". Something strange is indeed happening and it seems that something that reoccurs in the Abyss is likely to happen again... and soon. The mass skeletons being dated every 2000 years doesn't point to something good happening though... Oh, and before I forget, Bondrewd using Nanachi's eyes to see the 6th layer and beyond gives the impression he wants to see what this event is.
Holy sht, that's very good theory. The 2000 years lore is also really interest me. It's a shame that they didn't include (in anime) Nat and Shiggy conversation before Kiyui got transported to caravan ship. I'm sure that this 2000 years cycle will play a big role in the series final and Riko will try to stop it.
I disagree with the complaint about the cut off point. its perfect because the pacing would have been horribly fast and the noone of the beautiful strengths of the Abyss would be seen if they had to rush all the way to Bondrewd. seriously. its a cliff hanger, but its a cliffhanger after a emotional conclusion to a horrible situation, and it ends in a much needed high note. its brave and smart because it makes the fans WANT MORE, which also sells the manga, and pretty much garanteed a second season, because they took the risk and had to guts to prioritize a good first half told well instead of a full story told badly and rushed.
richard killface epsiide 13 gave me psychological damage.I mean I have seen some pretty gore stuff like people getting killed limb by limb but that scared me more
The Corpse Weaper doesn't reanimate their prey, they just mimic some words and use them as bait (most likely the last words of their prey, since they will repeat or shout them out)
I had the same problem with "survival training". Had no point. For Riko and Reg. But it had ey point for the white whistle trainer! I think it wasn't as much of a "test" or "lesson", as it was a check by her, to see if Lyza's child can handle it..
This anime gives me the same feeling as playing a Legend of Zelda game for the first time or playing Shadow of the Colossus for the first time. It gives you a feeling of a great unknown, any moment can be something new and interesting that comes along. The fact that you don’t know much about that universe makes it amazing
You know it's actually funny how the Curse of the Abyss seems all powerful even as there are solutions to it all around. The transformative effect seems to be impossible to avoid but then we see those Greed Eggs that can transform you and repair a body. Even the killing effect seems like it's reversible with that necromancy cube which, by the way, seems more like a perfect form of life-support rather then a way to make zombies given its temporary effect on people and its permanent revival of people whos bodies are only non-viable due to not already being in the process of maintaining itself.
@@Balpindo good. wonderful. great animation. plot twists. going down into the 6th layer was a nice ending. Wouldn't say it is a masterpiece, but it is subarashii.
Still, he was right it was so far the best and most intense arc in the entire story, also Ozzel wasn't joking when she said she was the nicest, in fact the movie proves that while she was fooling around this level of cruelty and literally allowing the protagonists to experience the true nature of the white whistles and how cruel they can be was essential, and yea she's actually fussy and toying around innocently with the main characters, remember that when watching the episodes featuring her xD.
@@BlazeMaster What's interesting is she's says morbid things to the kids, but has good intentions. While Bondrewd lures in his victims with manipulation and lies, his "honeyed words" as Nanachi would put it. Interesting to note, that Jiruo mentions that he could never tell when Lysa was honest. Might be foreshadowing there.
I LOVED this anime but I am so glad the season ended at 13. I need time to breath, i was devastated during the last couple of episodes. If it continued my heart would have exploded.
One of the things I love most about this anime is that the abyss is commonly referred to as the Neverland aka the after life. So when the character say there going to reach the bottom of the abyss is the same as saying there going to die and the way they say it with such passion or lust or drive just send chills down my spine.
I chalk it up to thrill seeking. Like in the real world, there are people who push the boundaries of what can and can't be done in attempt to get a "high" from the adrenaline which can be intoxicating which in turns causes them to become more and more reckless. Scientists, for years, especially those who are staunch Atheists (think Bondrewd level), would attempt to kill themselves to prove there isn't a God or the "after life". Nobody has come close. They can temporarily "die" via being "brain dead" or stopping the heart for a minute. Which shouldn't be confused with actual death. Because you can't come back from "die-dying". So White Whistles are basically "How close can I get to death and still remain? How can I reach limbo where I toe the line between life and death?"
I wonder if there is ever going to be a 'Why You Should Still Watch Made in Abyss' video, now that the movie and second season have finished and made their impact.
@@harrellt1405 i watched season 2 its good and all but amplifies the gore aspect and you should watch the third movie first because it’s important to understand some of the stuff going on
I do wonder. Frankly, the second season is significantly more transgressive than the first in a lot of ways which might make John hesitant to recommend to most people-I've actively warned certain people away from watching it myself because of how purposefully nauseating and upsetting it gets-but I also think that it's kind of… transcendent, honestly, if you're a very specific kind of person. It speaks to you in your blood and sinews. I don't know how to explain it.
I guess my only gripe with the show is how even though Reg and Riko are both going further and further into the abyss they rarely use any relics to their advantage. Sure Reg is practically a living relic and later in the series Riko gets an awesome one as a weapon but other than that we rarely get to see any relics in action to be used to aid in the exploration into the abyss. Even the beginning sets up these relics are vastly important pieces of artifacts that are practically the life blood of the town above but we are shown countless times how worthless some relics are. Sure I can’t expect ever relic to be a showstopper but atleast I wanted to see these relics used to aid in their survival rather than just throwaway consumables like Riko’s abyss compass or that “unbreakable” umbrella from episode 10(I think)
The point is made in the earlier episodes that most artifacts are useless on their own... the artifacts they have found are like... sponges and shit.... they have two artifacts of worth that they have encountered not counting Reg himself, that is the blaze reap, and the cube at ozens.... they can't very well carry that cube and they dont really know how it works, and the blaze reap they use but they dont have a whole lot of knowledge on it or its capabilities...
I will always remember this anime as the one which actually made me want to know the backtory of the characters - especially Mitty and Nanachi. Some series just make me go "oh, backstory time? Sure, but I don't really care." This anime made me thirsty for information about the characters, the abyss and everything else. I will never forget how amazed I felt when I watched the first episode. Now... gotta go through a shit ton of trash series to watch another masterpiece like this one.
Yeah definitely. The world building had me wondering, so wtf is down there? There aren't a lot of series with such good mystery and intrigue. Every weird ass thing that happens is easily justified by the abyss being a wack place
Another thing that isn’t quite mentioned in this analysis is how unafraid Made In Abyss is with biology. This might go partially hand in hand with the over sexualization, but the show and manga are not afraid to show you blood, gore, vomit, and even in some absolutely gut wrenching moments where you feel the pain that characters are going through, urine. To me, even though it has a very cartoony look, the show feels real in that regard. It’s believable to me that one could be in so much pain they piss themselves, mostly because I’ve been there and done that. It might make some people uncomfortable, but for me it’s just a demonstration of how raw the show and story really is.
The blood and gore I don't think he gets off on, but I can definitely see the constant 'shitting and pissing yourself' being played for fetish fuel. It's... less disturbing to me than it should be. The internet has ruined me.
Thank you from Japan, Super Eyepatch Wolf! Your video is perfect, always reminds me of why I love anime as a medium. Your soothing voice and the way of talking sometimes give me tears. Cheers!
I’m more interested in the birthday curse than the final maelstrom atm, as I’ve finally caught up with the manga. I have a sneaking suspicion that the city of Orth (or however you spell it) is slowly transforming into another layer affected by a curse of sorts, what with the praying skeletons dating around specific time periods (another one of which is coming up) and a disease affecting those close to the Abyss.
I didn't even start the video, I saw the name, looked it up and binge watched the entire season in one night. I was sucked right into the world and deeply engaged with the characters' journey. Truly a fantastic anime.
i dont even watch anime that much anymore but i just love to hear you talk and the way you deliver information is really enjoyable to listen to. Keep it up i knew that i discovered a gem when you just started.
Mitty's suffering and screaming in the elevator, and people's justifiably horrified reaction to that, made me realize that most people don't suffer and scream like that. Most people don't have chronic illnesses that wreck their bodies and leave them begging for death, if only silently. As fucked up as this show is, seeing that suffering on someone else was the encouragement I needed to get help. Wanting to save her helped me save myself. I haven't screamed to myself like that for six months now. I'm doing a lot better. So yeah this is some fucked up shit (and I'm still not cool with the kink stuff it puts on the kids) but I'm very grateful for it. And I'm grateful I found a solution for myself that wasn't dying, haha
There is something in the writing of Made in Abyss that, to me, demonstrates a very visceral understanding of what it's like for your body to behave in ways that you can't control, which frighten and upset you, which do not represent who you are and how you see yourself even as they reshape both things. Whether the thing which transforms this relationship is as universal as adolescence or as particular as chronic illness or trauma, it's in there in one way or another. I am really glad that it helped you seek help with your condition. That's the beauty of art which really resonates: For one person it's a striking motif, for another it can save their life.
@user-ef7jv4qe8q I think it's often the fucked-up stories that help people process the fucked-up things in their lives, just as much as the nicer stories usually help to calm us. I personally definitely need both types of stories lol
Juan M I’m gonna be honest it’s a contender. Tomorrow was fantastic, Nanachi in the dark sent chills, Hanzeve or however you spell it was beautiful. I don’t know man it’s a phenomenal soundtrack.
Lemourne yeah, is a prety solid and unic sountrack... it seems like a sci-fi shit or something .. i'm in love with "made in abyss" "tour the abyss" and "hanezeve caradinha"
The 1st video essay I’ve watched from this God-given gift of a channel. I’m glad to say that these small glimpses into these fantastical worlds are something really special and full of inspiration.
I gotta say, this isn't just one of my favourite anime, it's one of my favourite fictions in any medium. I first watched it at a point in my life that I'd given up on feeling the kind of all-consuming fascination and joy with a work of fiction that kid me had when discovering Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, or adult me had with On the Road, Pan's Labyrinth, Cowboy Bebop, or The Master and Margarita. I felt as I went into my 4th decade that my loves and fascinations were now basically set and the world, while still having plenty to enjoy, had no new wonders - at least in terms of fiction (hiking Torres del Paine or setting foot in Antarctica still brought the wonder, but they were a lot harder to gain than picking up a book or streaming a show). Made in Abyss gave me that thrill I thought was unreachable now. And in giving me that, it gives me hope that I can keep on rediscovering it. I really hope we get an ending to this story, but even if we don't I'm pretty thankful for what we've got (and can still look forward to).
I cannot shut up about this anime. I have recommended it to everyone I know who has even a small interest in the art form. I was honestly wondering when you would make this video, because it wasn't really a question of whether you you make it, that was a complete certainty. I love your work.
The guy who wrote about the Hero's Journey is Joseph Campbell, Joseph Anderson makes (admittedly excellent) long form video game analysis videos on youtube and probably isn't quite as globally influential.
Writing this comment down after watching your video a year or two ago. Season 2 of Made in Abyss is out and I felt the need to come back to this video and just say, you fucking did it, I watched the show immediately after watching this video, maybe not even making all the way through the video, because you sold me on probably one of the best animes in recent years, o e with so much story and lore, world building and fantastic character. Thanks again. Season 2 is amazing and I hope you lake a second part to this video, explain even further why this show is just a masterpiece
this series just fills me with dread because of how nothing good ever happens to anyone. it’s like watching a high speed car accident. you already know that something awful is going to happen to the people involved, there’s probably nothing that could save them, and somehow you can’t look away.
3 years later. I still have this in my #1 spot for the saddest anime moment I've ever seen. (THAT SCENE) Made me bawl my eyes out and physically cry like a baby...
Friends: You should watch Made in Abyss, it's amazing!!! Me: Hmm... Maybe later. Super Eyepatch Wolf: Why you should watch Made in Abyss Me: *Grabs popcorn and watches the anime right away*
On the subject of how Riko and Reg's dynamic is almost RPG-like, I'm gonna echo Mother's Basement's sentiments and say that if this anime were a game, it'd be one of the greatest games ever made.
From the very first episode I became obsessed with the idea of exploring the world in the form of an RPG game. Closest thing in my book is Xenoblade Chronicles.
Someone needs to make a DarkSouls style game where we play as young whistles and try to descend to the bottom of the Abyss without dying, while collecting various relics, documenting the flora and fauna of the Abyss and camping out alone or with other players, and you can rank up until you eventually can get your white whistle which is custom made, at least in terms of its abilities. And you only have one life per game, if you die you die and have to start over.
This has to be my favourite anime of all time. I spent the entire show fascinated and the show made me cry multiple times. Its fantastic is so many ways. Everything from the style, the art, the music, the characters and the story, it all is just breathtaking.
Watching Made in Abyss personally reminded me of how it felt exploring in Hollow Knight and the similar environmental storytelling and world building they both have
I finished this series last night, episode 13 destroyed me. I can't look at blankets, stuffed animals, cute redheads, or lovely pretty fields without seeing Mitty. I hope that through all the torment she finds peace. I cried for probably 20 minutes straight, it was just... terrible. I wanted so badly to jump into the screen and toss Bondrewd down into a pit of horrors, one that he'd suffer through as much as Mitty did. :( sorry for any spoilers it just... was intense. Can't wait for season 2.
Grey Shirt Guy I know what you mean...I didn’t watch much of the anime but I read the manga and Nanachi setting up blankets and stuffed animals in her bed for her was a little too much for me. I did that for my precious dog before I put her down. I fucking hate how Bondrewd probably just is incapable of feeling remorse for what he did to her.

@@airplanes_aren.t_real thats an interesting way to think about it. I see it as a depiction of human curiosity. In spite of all the dangers and literal impossibility of coming back from the journey, we really just need to know whats down their. Make not that I used need and want, cause it just never gets out of your head. Like how we ask "what is in outer space?" We just need to know, human curiosity is such a thing
My first thoughts while watching this videos were "this is one beautiful and endearing art-style, with extremely endearing characters and worlds, how is this supposed to get dark? Probably he's just making a big deal out of it". Than I came to the part about episode 13 and than I took a peak at the comments here. Well, Anime, you fooled me again. I give you that one. Goddamn.
One thing I really love about Made in abyss is the characters expressions. Who ever animated them did an incredible job. SPOILERS, but when Reg believes Riko is dead, his screams and his eyes really make you feel for him. This anime is so well made.
I've watched this series 3 times over, read the manga over again, and just love it so. God. Damn. Much. Even though I've already watched it, I'm still watching your video just because I love hearing other people's takes.
Came back to rewatch this after watching the full series a month ago. And the bare bones summary of what happened to Mitty nearly brought me to tears. I'd just like to say, I am glad you made this even though you likely won't ever see this.
someone talked about this show? show that was the highest on mal last season a show everyone watched and have made videos about no offense i like that he made a video but your acting like its underrated when it was the highest rated show last season
In defense of the sexual shit they do; a lot of it is just innocent children doing indecent things as children do, like bathing together and Reg is extremely embarrassed being more aware of his bodies physiological response. However you are right there is a lot of stuff that is kind of uncomfortable like... spoiler A toilet that licks Riko to clean up afterwards. That was unnecessary
yea but do they then need a closeup on the face as it happen showing a sequences of faces that i am sure i have seen many times in hentai to show orgasm
The first three episodes are fantastic but he's (SEW) underselling how much of a chore the show gets to continue from then on out. Episodes 6-9 are excruciatingly slow.
I think the reason this show originally appealed to me was because it reminded me of Etrian Odyssey so much. A town situated next to a massive, unknown labyrinth, with people trying to explore it for glory or discovery. I love it. (And both have fantastic soundtracks.)
Wow, you were not kidding about dark. The darkest part was like watching the first episode with Chimera in Fullmetal Alchemist 10 times in a row; it was that emotionally draining.
This is one of my favorite modern animes. So happy that toonami picked it up for its English localization and I’m enjoying it! In fact, it’s one of the better shows in years. To me it is the best show besides attack on Titan and Shamu, the animation. Those three shows are the best shows on toonami rn
Oh my God, this is pretty much Etrian Odyssey in the anime form!!! Must watch! And for anyone who loves this anime, I highly suggest playing Etrian Odyssey!
I was hoping I'd see this comment! Explorers descending into a multi-layered abyss, fantasy automatons and even the incongruously cutesy art style - there are so many similarities.
@@Paegis The feeling I get when Im deep into an unexplored stratum, and I realize I forgot to buy an ariadne thread and im far away from a geomagnetic pole.. Every step is life or death lol
Imma just give my two cents on the most discussed topic in the video; the 'uncomfortable sexualisation of children'. To give you some of my background, so that you may understand why I think the way I do ( if you'll even care reading this), I come from a very liberated family in Germany. Now Germany is a country in which nudity is generally a lot less sexualized and sex is a lot more normalized than in many other countries in the world (including the US and Japan), but even for German standards, me and my family could give less of a crap on thise topics and even in my family, I take it to a whole new level. I've been working as a figure model for almost as long as I've been studying art and certainly longer than I've been studying animation and to me, sex is special when done with feelings and otherwise pure enjoyment and fun. I have drawn more people naked in a year (yes, that also included kids of various ages who have modeled with consent of their parents) than most of you have seen in your entire lives. To me, the human body and everything that comes with it, is as natural as icy weather is for emperor penguins. That being said, I have read the manga and yes, it makes even ME uncomfortable. Many shots are deliberately drawn to look sexual, to a point where even Riko's nonchalance about nudity becomes something fetishized. Reg is constantly getting a hard on (or at least it's told he is) by just touching Nanachi. It's like his body has the sex drive of a 16 year old, while it has the looks of a 12 year old with the same mind to boot. Nanachi teases Reg at every opportunity she gets about him being lewd. Now let's face it, a lot of kids do that, but the understanding of what that actually means comes sometime within the next one to three years. Nanachi however, has all an adult understanding of 'lewdness', while still being 10 to 12 years old. No, it's clear in the mange that these children are sexualized. Whether that's because the author is lusting after kids, or whether he doesn't know how to write characters without sexualizing them or whether he just doesn't have enough confidence in his story to keep the attention of the readers without throwing in some sex or sex jokes every few pages can be debated, but no matter what the reason is, it's uncomfortable to someone as comfortable with sexuality and nudity like me, and a lot worse for people less comfortable with it. It's clear that the only people who'd enjoy this content are lolicons and pedophiles. The anime however, is a totally different story. I believe that it's done a very good job of leaving out all the sexual parts of the children's nudity and only left what advanced the story, the characters or even the tone of the show (at least for the most part). Starting with the world that this plays in, many things make in it make us squirm, but all of them are part of this world. This includes the general acceptance of child labor and the fact that the act of tying someone up naked is a normal form of punishment. It's very much possible that things that are normal in our world, like maybe the legality of harmful drugs such as alcohol or cigarettes, in that world are regarded as downright inhuman. Different cultures have different values and morals. That goes even more so for fantasy worlds. Riko just doesn't give a shit about nudity. In her mind, it's the most natural thing in the world and every time she undresses or shows herself in the nude in front of other people, or talks about genitals in a simply scientific way, it drives home this part of her character. Sure, there is no specific NEED for her to do so, but people constantly complain that there aren't enough shows who 'show, don't tell'. Well, this show shows all aspects of its characters without telling any of it. If what you get out of Riko showing herself in the nude is that 'the show is sexualized' instead of 'Riko is comfortable with nudity', then I'm sorry, that's on you, not the show. Likewise, the actions and reactions of characters in the town of Orth (sorry if I got the name wrong). Among the kids, the only one who gets uncomfortable when talking about his Penis is Reg, and while one could conclude to this as the kids just not being old enough to care about nudity and sexuality, the later appearance of the black whistle who checks out Reg and talks about his Penis like every other part of him that he has inspected, just shows that this is a culture in which nobody cares if you're nude or not. While the same could be said for the many urine and feces moments of the children, it has been established that at least this is something that is usually a little more private and kept behind closed doors. So why are those left in the anime? Because this show is very intimate and holds nothing back. It goes out of its way to show everything. Again, this might be unneeded, but if you think about it, the entire scene where Riko almost dies if it hadn't been for Nanachi was unneeded to. We already understood the dangers of the abyss just by what we had seen so far and much like Madoka, the horrors could have been displayed on a purely psychological level. But MiA is not like Madoka, it's an entirely different kind of show and one big part of it is that the physical parts are as unhinged as the psychological. Riko was out of commission for two days if I'm not mistaken and people do pee themselves during that time and those clothes do need to be washed. You complain about the urine and feces being fetishized, yet drop no comment about puking, which was shown far more often. Everything that is shown is shown for the sole reason of driving home the fact that this is a show that holds nothing, and I mean NOTHING back. It's doing all that on purpose and it's most likely meant to make you uncomfortable, because let's face it, as good as this show is, it's not a very comfortable show to watch. That being said, there are still a few problems with the kids being unnecessarily sexualized. The scene where Reg pops a boner when seeing Riko naked in the pool was out of place (and shows the true nature of the manga as moments like this are on every corner) and if the blossoming sexuality of these kids is something they wanted to explore, then having a scene or two where Reg is frustrated with himself or embarrassed over the fact that these things happen or even just Riko realizing what's happening and explaining it to an oblivious Reg in the most scientific way possible would have been the better way to go, as this tidbit added absolutely nothing (especially AFTER Reg having seen Riko naked as often as he did). Likewise, a big part of Nanachi, being the teasing type, is problematic. Again, kids teasing kids about sexual stuff is normal, but they don't quite understand yet what they're talking about. Nanachi definitely understands, which is a problem as it implies that 12 year olds are mentally sexually mature (which they aren't! When a person is sexually mature mentally is debatable, and even though I say that it heavily depends on the person, I'd say the very youngest would be deep into their 13th year, with 14 to 15 being more common and 16 being a definite in most cases). And even if Nanachi's body stopped aging, the way she behaves especially towards Reg is an absolute no go. It's like a teen teasing a 3 year old because he doesn't understand why a dog bit him after he punched its nose several times and didn't stop even after dog growled (for those of you who don't know, a nose is the dogs most sensitive area and punching it is like kicking a man in the balls). If that wasn't enough, Nanachi teases Reg in a way that is reminiscent of OUR world, long after it's been established that nudity and even close contact is considered perfectly normal. Reg is naturally shy, doesn't like to be looked at or touched too much and feels the same way about other people, so his embarrassment with the casual behavior of Riko and the townspeople is very much explained by his character, but Nanachi's odd attitude towards Reg's sexual attractions or even the (very) few moments of Riko's sexual awareness have no basis whatsoever. It's like they're only there to fulfill a character trope and create even more sexual moments within these kids to keep the watcher entertained. Now to be fair, I give very little fault of any of this to the anime or animator. Being an animation student myself, I know how hard it is to keep looking at a project from an outside perspective (aka the viewers point of view. Kinda hard to know if the pacing is any good if you've worked on the same damn minute of animation for three weeks straight). The animators did a fantastic job figuring out what parts where part of the show's identity and what was just needless pandering and the few parts where it could be argued they didn't get it right are probably because they weren't quite able to hold on to the outside perspective. As for Nanachi, as much as I hate to say it, I can't fault the anime for how she is, because that part of her personality is just how she was written and it's so pronounced in the manga that I can't see how they could possibly entirely erase it and still stay true to the character. She'll just have to continue to be problematic in the future. I just hope the writers of the anime manage to make it subtle enough so it doesn't become a deal breaker (don't get me wrong, Nanachi is wonderful and she'd be as perfectly written as Riko and Reg and an even stronger character than the two of them, if it weren't for that little fault). Okay, this was an essay. I don't expect anyone to read it, I just mostly wrote it because I felt the need to get it off my chest, so thanks for anyone who did. Also, I love discussion, so feel free to comment and start one.
i feel like made in abyss has more to offer more than that, that's the reason those scenes doens't matter to me, there are a lot of things happening to care if they are showing reg having a boner, i mean, there is a world full of possibilities out there in the anime, so, i think it might not matter at all :]
I never really noticed Nanachi teasing Reg in such a way. And Nanachi's behaviour can be explained by the fact she may actually be older because the time in the Abyss doesn't go the same way as on the outside(not sure how exactly though). Also i'd question her medical skills for her age more. She might just know this stuff out of the books though, as well as basic anatomy and of course sexuality. I'd say Nanachi isn't here for sexual purposes and i honestly found the scene with Reg's boner (and second one too) really funny. It caught me off guard. H O W E V E R . I would love some scenes with Rico be....Revised or removed completely. For example the living toilet that "wipes" a lot. Or the tentacle scene where she is supposed to be torn apart but it looks like r**e. The author IS a weird fetish man and i don't say the manga has no questionable moments and unapologetic fanservice. But he is a weird fetish man who wrote a beautiful, bleak story with loveable characters and interesting world and that's the sole reason we enjoy it. I still hope he'll calm down with his lolicon/shota stuff at least a little bit and focuse on making a good story though, because he really can. And there is a way to separate his fetishes from it too. For example drawing doujins on the side.
The first thing I saw of Made in Abyss was a meme a friend showed me. Basically, it was the scene of Mitty and Nanachi's transformation... With elevator music. He was laughing his ass of, but I was terrified about the scene, me being someone that cannot deal with bodyhorror without having a feeling nausea. I tried to avoid it, as I judged it by this scene, thinking it was a gore series dedicated to that type of scenes. A couple of month later we binge watched it together, as he told me he would tell me where the most horrific scenes were playing. With this deal, I was finally able to watch it entirely, and I became a fan. I love the animation, the story and the characters. I loved it so much that I read the manga too. And I regret it. Mainly because, from the Bondrew saga and onward, the bodyhorror-ness and the child sexualisation get much more attention, and I did not felt comfortable at all. I was skipping page after page, without being able to read anything, and so I missed a huge part of the story. I haven't even finished the full arc of the City of the Unreturned. This is something that no one tells you when you ask for trigger warnings on this series, but if you are sensible to gore, bodyhorror or torture, do yourself a favour and do not read Made in Abyss. It's a wonderful series, but it can be really disturbing, and it's not worthy risking your mental and sometimes physical health for a series.
Elevator music over that scene killed me, but I was also crying uncontrollably at that part in the manga. I think it's good to find ways to laugh at terrible things, but different strokes for different folks I guess.
The Nanachi and Reg conversation scene when he was fishing made me realize I was watching a masterpiece of a show. The beautiful yet melancholic music that creeps in coupled with the dire reality of their conversation, and the gorgeous backdrop, is such a thoughtful image of the entire vibe of the story. That even though they are surrounded by beauty found nowhere else, there is unfathomable danger seeping in with thar beauty.

Alright, so I was on the fence with this one for a very long time. The cutesy style mixed with all the opinions I'd collected concerning "Uncle Lovecraft's Nightmare Hole" left me with conflicting ideas. Then I heard the name "Liza the Annihilator." Suffice to say, I am no longer on the fence about watching this show. I MUST see with my own two eyes what breed of anime badass would dare claim such a title.
Another fantastic analysis, man, great video! I initially didn't think much of the show when I first saw it, thought it was just a chibi adventure thing, until I heard how much people were into it, and after checking out the first episode, I absolutely fell in love with it. The artwork is amazing, the soundtrack is beautiful, and everything to do with the Abyss just captured my imagination in ways few shows are able to do. Even as the show started to come to an end I was so obsessed I started reading the manga, which is the first time I've ever done so. And like you said, the way it brings up sexual stuff is questionable and made me quite uncomfortable, but at least those moments are few and far between, and they're mostly played for laughs. But still. I am disappointed they didn't go into Bondrewd's arc in the first season, since I feel like it could have given the show a strong finale to end on and could have fixed the pacing problem the show has in the middle few episodes, but I think the series ended pretty well. I just can't wait to see how they adapt it, if they adapt it, since there haven't been any announcements for a Season 2 yet :c But still, it's a great series and I can't wait to see where it goes :D
Is it weird that one of the small details I appreciate most about this series is how Reg rattles a bit when he moves? Like, you can hear the metal bits in his arms and legs clanking together every time the camera is close to him while he's moving and Idunno, I just find that to be an awesome little detail.
absolutely not, I loved that detail

@@MrMuel1205
The thing is it's equal parts fear and wonder, the idea that perhaps there _is_ something here that could eventually be understood even if no one person could ever hope to do it.
Yeah so many rely purely on eldritch horrors for that, which work, but need that existential terror

Wdym
(Not to say no shows have done this, or at least some of it)
@Fahim Ali Wanna ruin an anime?

Its called The Bends, i realized that as well!
It is explained in details in manga and maybe in anime though
As a fellow diver, I thought the same thing too!

Yes.
If youve ever seen the bear from annihilation, that has the same gimic. The noises it makes are terrifying
And that prey would be unsuspecting cave raiders...

Not that anyone cares but the soundtrack for Made in Abyss was recorded in Vienna at the synchron stage vienna( it's the most modern orchestra hall for recording music. Although it was built by the Nazis)
I am very proud of my hometown.
Great series and great soundtrack.
Maurizio long Vienna is awesome in general!!!
I love anime with orchestrated OSTs. Full Metal Alchemists Brotherhood, Metropolis, and Little Witch Academia come to mind.
It was also composed by an Australian, Kevin Penkin, which I am very proud of
Vienna is great :) of course
The soundtrack certainly has the sound of being recorded in an orchestra hall.

They probably don't have enough manga stuff to make an entire season with it.

I’m such a sucker for world building. So this series is definitely my Anime of the Decade.
Hello
Hello
Absolutely agree. I love world building. But I hate the fact that most isekai anime (and similar) waste this potential. So Made in Abyss did a phenomenal job with it!
Any suggestions of world building animes?

Also, this would make a SICK videogame.
an open world abyss exploration game? omg it would
@@samsky6449 kind of sad they botched the actual game
True that this is just the reality of nature but the Pokemon reference is out of place, this has nothing to do with what Pokemon shows.

@Alexander Supertramp you're a Fucking moron
Nanachi?
I await your tribute of her
Subarashii!
Plague has discovered Made in Abyss and Nanachi in particular and all is now right in the world. I Eagerly await what comes next.
**Nnnaaahhhh intensifies**
Indeed
20:00 Talking about the fear of being left alone in a cruel world... and then scoring it with the LISA OST. Dick move, well done, I approve.
Anyone remember the part where riko bleeds out of all holes and her hand looks like a blown up rubber glove but spray painted purple?
Yes. It was terrifying! But somehow really good in a sense of worldbuilding, storytelling and stuff.

I had the same problem with "survival training". Had no point. For Riko and Reg.
But it had ey point for the white whistle trainer! I think it wasn't as much of a "test" or "lesson", as it was a check by her, to see if Lyza's child can handle it..
They believed that she can do it because of she was born in abyss.

There's a full length movie after too
One of the things I love most about this anime is that the abyss is commonly referred to as the Neverland aka the after life.
How can I reach limbo where I toe the line between life and death?"
this gives me the same feel as ori and the blind forest, I LOVE IT
OMG you nailed it

I do wonder. Frankly, the second season is significantly more transgressive than the first in a lot of ways which might make John hesitant to recommend to most people-I've actively warned certain people away from watching it myself because of how purposefully nauseating and upsetting it gets-but I also think that it's kind of… transcendent, honestly, if you're a very specific kind of person. It speaks to you in your blood and sinews. I don't know how to explain it.
Felt like the soundtrack by Kevin Penkin needs more love. It's one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard for any piece of media.

You might like attack on titan then :)
It might make some people uncomfortable, but for me it’s just a demonstration of how raw the show and story really is.
having read the manga i get the disturbing feeling that the author gets off on the pain, blood, gore, vomit, and specially urine.
The blood and gore I don't think he gets off on, but I can definitely see the constant 'shitting and pissing yourself' being played for fetish fuel. It's... less disturbing to me than it should be. The internet has ruined me.
I agree with Brad, but that has nothing to do with the sexualization
Made In Abyss couldn't be published in a traditional magazine cause it has no care for comfort zones, the 5th layer arc made me wanna vomit
Brad Hicks it's probably the most exhausted I've ever felt reading something
22:52 Dawn of the Deep Soul, the movie which covers this arc is absolutely spectacular!!!

Holy shit, I don’t know what you were going through but I’m so glad this helped you seek out help. No one should be suffering like that❤
There is something in the writing of Made in Abyss that, to me, demonstrates a very visceral understanding of what it's like for your body to behave in ways that you can't control, which frighten and upset you, which do not represent who you are and how you see yourself even as they reshape both things. Whether the thing which transforms this relationship is as universal as adolescence or as particular as chronic illness or trauma, it's in there in one way or another. I am really glad that it helped you seek help with your condition. That's the beauty of art which really resonates: For one person it's a striking motif, for another it can save their life.
Never knew that an anime where a child bleeds from every hole in their face could've saved someone
@user-ef7jv4qe8q I think it's often the fucked-up stories that help people process the fucked-up things in their lives, just as much as the nicer stories usually help to calm us. I personally definitely need both types of stories lol

On the subject of how Riko and Reg's dynamic is almost RPG-like, I'm gonna echo Mother's Basement's sentiments and say that if this anime were a game, it'd be one of the greatest games ever made.
Masae It's Etrian Odyssey
That1Weirdo precisely
From the very first episode I became obsessed with the idea of exploring the world in the form of an RPG game.
Closest thing in my book is Xenoblade Chronicles.
Someone needs to make a DarkSouls style game where we play as young whistles and try to descend to the bottom of the Abyss without dying, while collecting various relics, documenting the flora and fauna of the Abyss and camping out alone or with other players, and you can rank up until you eventually can get your white whistle which is custom made, at least in terms of its abilities.
And you only have one life per game, if you die you die and have to start over.
Masae it’s funny because it’s creator was an ex game developer
This has to be my favourite anime of all time. I spent the entire show fascinated and the show made me cry multiple times. Its fantastic is so many ways. Everything from the style, the art, the music, the characters and the story, it all is just breathtaking.
can confirm it's much more satisfying to binge season 1 + the sequel movie together.
TF Sorry about your dog.
Its cute how you think a pit would stop bone daddy
I feel exactly the same
I just wrapped myself into my blanket and cried non stop. It was utterly heart breaking to watch what happened to Mitty.
Goddam the last episode broke me... It made me cry such a good anime... cant wait for season 2
After you revealed the consequences of going into the abyss, my first thought was how this show as a whole is a visual representation of addiction.
I never thought of that but your 100% right, the cave raiders are addicted to exploring the abyss and the deeper they get the harder it is to escape

Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.
But real talk I'm glad someone like you is talking about this show.
Nohmbody ikr this show needs more attention
someone talked about this show? show that was the highest on mal last season a show everyone watched and have made videos about
no offense i like that he made a video but your acting like its underrated when it was the highest rated show last season
In defense of the sexual shit they do; a lot of it is just innocent children doing indecent things as children do, like bathing together and Reg is extremely embarrassed being more aware of his bodies physiological response. However you are right there is a lot of stuff that is kind of uncomfortable like...

A toilet that licks Riko to clean up afterwards.
That was unnecessary
In some of parts of the world, they use animals for that purpose IRL.
yea but do they then need a closeup on the face as it happen showing a sequences of faces that i am sure i have seen many times in hentai to show orgasm

Literally got to the "spoiler warning" part and stop, closed the tab the video was playing in and found episode 1. you've sold me.
shika maru watch in glorious 1080p, you get so lost in the anime.
........ have fun

Explorers descending into a multi-layered abyss, fantasy automatons and even the incongruously cutesy art style - there are so many similarities.

not to mention the music, it's beautiful and sets the tone for every scene almost perfectly. Kevin Penkin did a wonderful job
Also, I love discussion, so feel free to comment and start one.
yep. I think its odd that in western culture naked Children are almost more taboo than naked adults. Its silly.
that was one big comment and agreed i personaly i wanted to read the manga after the anime but then i relised the overused sexuality
Thank you for your careful dissertation on the subject. It was enlightening and thought-provoking.
i feel like made in abyss has more to offer more than that, that's the reason those scenes doens't matter to me, there are a lot of things happening to care if they are showing reg having a boner, i mean, there is a world full of possibilities out there in the anime, so, i think it might not matter at all :]
No mention of the soundtrack?! I thought it was one of the most stand out things about the adaptation.

I just can't wait to see how they adapt it, if they adapt it, since there haven't been any announcements for a Season 2 yet :c
But still, it's a great series and I can't wait to see where it goes :D
