Very beautiful movie, but saddening to hear what happened behind the scenes. I'm happy they got paid after, but they should have gotten paid when they were supposed to. Animators are artists, and they should be paid the amount they deserve. Especially for a movie like this.
This reminded me of what MAPPA did to many freelance animators during the making of (if I remember correctly) Jujutsu Kaisen and the later season of Attack on Titan where a mass amount of animators were complaining on twitter (where studios find freelancers) saying that they were not paid/credited on the episodes that they worked on. Both of these animes are a huge success especially for JJK because of the amazing animation that it provided, but the fact that the laymen do not know of the issue, or worse, they even defend the studio, is really disappointing.
@e.a5674 i dont understand this thank youmappa thingy. Didnt mappa themselves that agreed on taking snk despite 8 months hell schedule? What about other projects? Not to mention using false trailer to hype fans? Its clearly mappa higher up mismanagement yet we thanking them for it?
KyoAni is probably the only studio that treats its staff fairly and pays by hour instead of a frame. Frankly it's disgusting how people can be working like slaves in one of the most developed countries of the 21st century in the world.
Had the opportunity to watch this in a theatre earlier this summer, all I got to say is that the experience from the final scenes in no way can be recreated at home and should be watched in a theatres. Visuals and the orchestra were incredible
I watched this movie a while back and I’m always surprised by how amazing it looks. It’s so sad that the animators who did the beautiful work weren’t compensated for their overtime
One thing I'd like the clarify Mr A hasn't been confirmed as an animator, but someone who worked on the production maybe a production assistant hard to say, but either way the point is the same the work of everyone on the team do is intense not just the animators.
We never know what really happens in the background of this kind of production, or maybe we do but it's so revolting that we choose to focus on the bright side. Maybe there is a good reason indeed, of why we don't see good anime like the old days.
@@igodreamer7096 at the very least the rates animators were in japan back in the day were so much higher in the early days its not even funny especially if you were a top person
Watching this movie felt like a big concept art in movement. I keep asking myself how that level of details, colors and those gorgeous character designs were even possible and is so sad knowing it was at the cost of so many people health. This movie would never be the same. Thank you for the video.
I'm a huge fan of the manga and found the film to be fantastic in its own right as well. Focusing the story more on Ruka and her coming-of-age-esque storyline was a great choice for condensing a really, REALLY philosophically and thematically dense manga. It also helps that the film is just breathtaking in its animation, composition, music scoring, shit just about everything.
I disliked for this exactly reason. It became just one more "coming of age story" into the ocean... the same old story, again. Half of the crazy unique story from the manga was discarded, a waste.
The moment I saw the video in my feed and the title, as an animator I knew immediately what the kick would be. I actually remember seeing the trailer for this film a while back and I found it absolutely stunning, and when it comes to the information around 4C's exploitation of its animators/compositors it's no where near of surprise. Animators all over in Japan are underpaid and under-evaluated for their time, money, and deserved well-being. It relieves me that unions are starting to be formulated to combat underpayment but it's merely the first step. I'm most definitely going to take in this movie because it's so raw and beautiful with its cosmic mystically euphoric nature, but with that being said I wish the absolute best for it's artists.
I think I definitely need to check this out soon, it's been on my "to watch" list for a little while. Thanks for another great video, your narration is always 110% relaxing :)
The manga is truly the most beautiful and magical thing ive ever read, and its great that the anime did it justice. Im just really sad to hear that theres so much negativity in creating an art piece that is supposed to be so pure and beautiful. They need reformation in the japanese animation industry because this is workplace abuse for real.
This was such a visual masterpiece. It blew my mind. I couldn't understand the whole story in the end, but I didn't care. I went with the majestic ride and chaos of it all. But damn, I'm sad to hear about the creators... :(
I just want to say that I enjoy your video essays. As someone who's practicing to be an animator your videos have given me more insight on the japanese animation industry.
I always wonder why animation Studios try to rip off there employees even though they have witness the work at ground level the passion, the time and the skill artist put in every day and yet they do this. Is there some kind of difficulty or it just them trying to save money for themselves?.
Animation is expensive, incredibly expensive, and it's incredibly niche so it doesn't always make the money it needs to justify its existence. The anime industry especially basically only exists because the creators lie about how much their show will take to make.
Thing is anime is still a niche market and most ppl watch them for free online. Of course that doesn't justify not paying your staff but it seems a lot of companies wait for revenues to come in if the project is a hit because they went well beyond production budget before it was even completed. The mainstream Shonen stuff is really the only exception and it's why 3D animation is becoming more popular, less time and less costly to make. I don't like 3D animation, I don't think it currently captures the artists imagination well enough but when you hear stories like these you kind of understand why 2D animation is fading.
@@spankeyfish absolutely. in the US, Uber / Lyft / Doordash are prime examples of the exploitation of contract workers. these workers are "employed" as independent contractors rather than employees, meaning they're not subject to any of the protections afforded by employment law. there is no minimum wage guarantee for an IC, not even a guarantee that they make more money than they lose in operating costs, if it's slow. no employer provided healthcare or benefits, then on top of all this the individual shoulders 100% of the liability, physical risk, and operating costs of their job. the IC model is a way to offload all risk and economic externality onto the most vulnerable workers at the bottom while also sidestepping wage regulation, treating them as "companies selling services" instead of individual workers doing labor. Doordash even stooped to stealing their drivers' tips, leading the customer to believe the tip went to the driver, then pocketing it. there is no bar too low or no line too far to cross. firms will send their workers to the grave for a dollar, and the centuries-long struggle over basic labor rights and working conditions should be proof positive of this.
Ah man, I'm so Sad never heard about this film in the years that I've been a more avid fan of cinema. This is a real showcase of talent and I'd love more people to see it
Oh perfect, I just watched this for the first time just the other day. Absolutely stunning film, to be sure. Story was strange, wish it had been expanded on more, perhaps I'll read the manga
This anime reminds me of Disney's Fantasia. It's very costly to make, very artistic and it usually doesn't attract audience very well. It's a niche anime that get praises from artists and critics but general audience just can't appreciate it. At the end, it's a huge financial lost plus complication like this.
The only thing that can affect the way Japanese "black companies" abuse their employees is changes in expectations/behaviours in Japanese working culture and stricter enforcement of labour law. This happens regardless of whether they make bank or not. It's a style of management.
You're channel has been absolutely amazing this whole month each video has been a real gem. I've never heard of this movie/manga but my interest has been piqued. It sucks about the shady industry bts stuff but hopefully it'll all be resolved so the workers can look back fondly over what they made.
This video is so heart breaking for me specifically. For years now ive been a HUGE fan of studio 4.c and its works.. But knowing the animation scene in Japan, this should have probably been expected. Still, its so sad and disheartening to see the name of a studio ive loved so much in this light.
For some reason I just watched this for the second or third time recently and found it strangely familiar in a way that wasn’t from watching it more than once but from recognizing the artistic style and a feeling like I know what’s being told of that makes any sense ! Thanks Steve love all your content 🙏🏻👍🏼😁
What I love from Children of The Sea is how the manga initially inspired Kenshi Yonezu / Hachi in his drawings, as we can see in his Eine Kleine PV, Donut Hole, and his artbooks how similar his style is. Now imagine when he had to make a promotional soundtrack for the movie; he probably had on of the most fun moment in his life
i love both the movie and manga to the moon n back but wow i had no idea that its beauty came about at the expense of its staff. ill appreciate the animation tenfold with the knowledge of what theyve been put through. thank you for this video
Thank you for talking about this, I am not living in Japan or anything, I don't even wanna do animation whatsoever, since I think it's too much work for me, but I feel greatful. Hope ya the best. and not least I hope Japanese or otherwise animators who put all those hours into creating something amazing will get their fair share! We should be proud of these people for their timeless art pieces, and shouldn't rob the world for some cheap short term profit margins, these are the not replacable people... and even those working in any company shouldn't be put throught such an unfavourable treatment. Somenthing I always found appalling in Japanese culture is how they're overlooking the abuse of the individual, like in a work setting "If it works just let it be." -is the sorta vibe I'm getting. Far from being responsible or wise, yet still claiming both.
I’m so damn glad that dude got paid…JEEEZ. One of my FAVORITE movies although painful for reasons. I don’t even know the guy but just hearing this started getting me infuriated. CoS is a serious work of art & the people who can put it on their resume I’m sure will get what they deserve soon, for those who’ve been done wrong. Subbed
This movie is on Netflix and I was actually able to watch it a few months ago. Unfortunately I didn't like it at all, and it felt more like a unfiltered passion project rather than a fully fledge film. It seemed way more concerned with the visuals than creating comprehensive or even entertaining characters or plotlines. Towards the end, where all the magic space/ocean psychedelic stuff starts happening, I just had to stop watching entirely because nothing was happening at all. It was like looking through a kaleidoscope... fun colors but nothing else.
Yes! Everyone is praising the film but there's need to be something more than beautiful visuals. I'm usually up for less plot driven and contemplative films, like Terrence Malick's, but this anime just felt like it had no content.
It's been some time since I've last saw the movie, but I think the whole purpose of that was to represent birth. They were talking about it at the beginning of the movie, something about celebration? Had to do with a stone they were carrying around. Along with the stars, and space too that was briefly brought up. That part you didn't like I think was supposed to be the climax, the two fish boys eventually have to go. Resulting into the birth that was mentioned throughout the film. The conclusion is that main character still believes they're out there somewhere. Eating another rock like it's nothin' I don't have a very big enough brain to get to the all of it, but I agree about the vagueness of the story. Like what was the whole purpose of the birth? The whole thing just looks like it wanted to look pretty.
Same, it felt like I was watching a two hour panspermia music video. I feel bad at myself for not liking it since it is obviously a high quality movie.
I heard tht the movie changes some, if not most of the story from the manga which actually praised for the plot twist and stuff. Dunno tho i haven't read it myself
I wish I was at the pitch meeting. "OK guys so I got this idea, you know how water is always moving, right? What if we make an entire anime underwater and draw all the rippling, waves, and refraction by hand?"
Perhaps not so coincidentally, the other movie mentioned in the video (Kaguya-hime no Monogatari) also has a rather unpleasant story behind the scenes.
1:26 YES!!! Someone said it! I haven’t even seen the film yet and have only seen the MV for it’s theme song “Spirits of The Sea” (by Kenshi Yonezu) and I noticed just how similar the feel of it is to Puparia. Puparia also took a shit ton of effort and time, and unlike the movie, it was made by one person (Shingo Tamagawa) and was completely hand-drawn.
Aside from what the video is about the production value of this video is really good and the style is great, looking forward to more videos in the future.
I forgot about this animation masterpiece It gave me a spiritual feeling, you will know if u have watched it The animation style is so relaxing and calming I never felt more at ease than when i was watching this movie
One of my favourite films, but it didn't come without suffering. Unfortunately, that is not at all unique to this one company, but is a widespread issue not just in the Japanese animation sector, but is a global problem across many industries. Corporations are getting away with too much in too many countries, and they must not be allowed to break the rules whenever they please. Labour is not valued nearly enough.
Welcome to Japan. As someone who lived in Japan for a brief spit. I had to work on the floor at a Cafe.. yep, a uh well you know, that kind of cafe. I was originally supposed to work behind the counter, but because I'm a fhemboi, a pretty 'ENGLISH' fhemboy. I gradually got coerced into working on the floor in various outfits, if I was harassed? silence. if I was groped? half the time someone would do something about it, but if it wasn't blatant, nothing would happen. Yet despite that, you'd think the groping was the worst part. The worst part is the overtime and how.. its like theres this culture of just taking advantage of employee's because the amount of times I was coerced to go to mixers and crap, still dressed in whatever 'theme' of the day, was stupid.. mind you, I'm still a teen at the time. Whats really sad however? that place was my saving grace, I had friends who ended up being coerced into being Hosts an Hostesses. They force you into debt with sneaky an sly methods, then basically own you. I did work for a place like that but, by that point, I thankfully had someone to fall back on. Inevitably, I left. To all the weebs an so forth that have this picture ideal of Japan, stop. Its not a welcoming environment for foreigners, especially if your pretty, doesn't matter if your a boy or girl, if your petite and pretty, you will be groped, your boss WILL try to take advantage of you. Black companies are just rife in Japan. Some of my friends have unfortunately self deleted because of it, because you feel like your alone and that there isn't a way out. I luckily could just.. leave the country. Nevermind the fact that if your American, you will NOT be welcome. My saving grace was the fact I'm British.. Japan has a fetish for Britain.
Hi! Im a first-time watcher and I don't normally comment on others; videos, but this video is absolutely brilliant. I'm a artist trying to Entrepeneur myself to financial freedom, I'm creating my own business with a partner, indirectly this was helpful in what to avoid and just other confirmations of 1.) look at the documents you are signing and 2.) history repeats itself so take advantage of it. I'm excited to watch you further! Have a wonderful day :)
It breaks my heart that the anime isn't recognised more, the amount of hardwork and pain that went into this must be put to justice, this should be known as keystone in animation.
And it doesn't even get an oscar award? What's really shit about most anime movies is that they don't get the recognition they deserve, yet crappy films still get a higher place such as Boss Baby or something (Like, who chose THAT film, it was the TOTAL BORE!). I hate that that's the truth for most of these beautiful films, it's so damn crap.
With everything happening in the world, people aren't very likely to start solidarity protests for the animation workers. But damn the film looks stunning.
I don’t remember subscribing but thank you Stevem for uploading this I wouldn’t have known about this manga or anime for some time without this channel EDIT:Oh looks like I last watched in august
With all the anime being made some real bad eggs have been just cranked out for seasonal production so it's good that some strain be put on the industry. ask yourself " do we really need 9 slice of life and 20 another world animes"? no we don't
I can't tell if it's gotten better or worse. 10-20 yrs ago most anime had 20- 60 episodes period. Now it's 100's of episodes and seasonal. Not because the quality has improved but so companies can keep pumping out content no matter how mediocre.
I suppose you can watch masterpieces over and over again and learn something from watching. If you feel like you've already learn it all watch another great thing, then after so many cycles you decides to watch your first great masterpiece, then you learn again
this film is my favorite film ever like it solidified my commitment to becoming a marine scientist while continuing to pursue my art but it is heartbreaking to find out about this, animators deserve so much better. The way they’ve inspired people across the years is so beautiful and it is extremely messed up how they are paid n treated
I love the video. I just want to ask, where do you find that information? Info about production and etc. I really want to know where to get that information. Thank you!
Somehow I hadn't heard of this movie even though i'm a huge fan of studio 4c and they are my favorite animation studio probably. i love whenever someone pushes boundaries of an art form. sure some people even say 'mindgame isnt anime' and such but to me that is a sign of how passionate they are about pushing anime to be more
Sorry to hear about what some of the staff on the production team went through. When watching this film for the first time I was completely captivated and oblivious to the broiling underneath. Very enlightening. P.S. The box the cat was in at the end looked like it was delivered by the cat bakery.
What is so SAD is that too many animes out there are garbage junk. Harems, fan service, tropes, reused stories, etc… and it gets more audience and $$$ than the beautiful animes out there, that are gold in its story and value. 🤕 people are so messed up nowadays.
I love Anime. We the people, I mean the fans "us" should start an organization that helps and supports this genre. It has never been done before but it has a sublime potential for profits to whoever is part of this journey. Enough of top notch studios who define this genre and slave the people who dearly love anime. I will not action this idea because the profits are astronomical and its only for those whose ethical foundation is unquestioned. Anime for life.
I remember finding the manga in my local library when I was around 12, I didn't even realize that it got animated. Makes me sad that the behind the scenes was so upsetting.
I had the chance to work in an animation studio past year, and yeah sucks the way how they avoid to pay us right compensation and OT. For me was fine because I just wanted to have the experience to work on anime. But poor artists thay have to deal with this every single day.
it's crazy how much puparia looks like this movie... they both have this ethereal feeling and character designs that you rarely see anywhere else, difference is puparia was made by one genius and is very conservative with its animation, while this movie is extremely animated.. anime films usually have more detailed animation than series, but when it comes to this level it's ridiculous..

Both of these animes are a huge success especially for JJK because of the amazing animation that it provided, but the fact that the laymen do not know of the issue, or worse, they even defend the studio, is really disappointing.
Reminds me of the industrial society and its future.
How about cloverworks?

Had the opportunity to watch this in a theatre earlier this summer, all I got to say is that the experience from the final scenes in no way can be recreated at home and should be watched in a theatres. Visuals and the orchestra were incredible
sounds like an ideal way to see if you can but unlikely for most
Nah son Blu ray version had my jaw on the floor
@@igodreamer7096 are you assuming these conditions werent around in the old days, because they were
@@Stevem Nah, more like making a correlation to what we perceived as good animation (in the past specifically) = terrible work conditions.

might wanna pin this
Watching this movie felt like a big concept art in movement. I keep asking myself how that level of details, colors and those gorgeous character designs were even possible and is so sad knowing it was at the cost of so many people health. This movie would never be the same. Thank you for the video.
thank you for watching :)
@@deathdoor i read the manga i cant say i thought the other parts of it were that unique, the human eating part maybe surprised me i guess lol
4:14 my god, that is the best water/swimming animation i have seen so far.
Its a shame such talented people got treated so poorly.
Thanks for another great video, your narration is always 110% relaxing :)
thank you for watching!
Where can I watch this? It's not available in Netflix.
The manga is truly the most beautiful and magical thing ive ever read, and its great that the anime did it justice. Im just really sad to hear that theres so much negativity in creating an art piece that is supposed to be so pure and beautiful. They need reformation in the japanese animation industry because this is workplace abuse for real.
the cost of this anime is the soul of every staff that participate in it
This was such a visual masterpiece. It blew my mind. I couldn't understand the whole story in the end, but I didn't care. I went with the majestic ride and chaos of it all. But damn, I'm sad to hear about the creators... :(
I just want to say that I enjoy your video essays. As someone who's practicing to be an animator your videos have given me more insight on the japanese animation industry.
glad they help :)
I always wonder why animation Studios try to rip off there employees even though they have witness the work at ground level the passion, the time and the skill artist put in every day and yet they do this. Is there some kind of difficulty or it just them trying to save money for themselves?.
save money/ dont have the money to pay them
It's far more widespread than animation studios. Some businesses have wage theft priced into the business model.
Story was strange, wish it had been expanded on more, perhaps I'll read the manga
the manga expands on it in quite wide fashion, its a lot more open about its content
No its just the animation is so expensive and they cant pay them thats all
This brings a smile to my face
Merry Christmas
Based on just the title: pretty much every anime. Anime studios work their employees to the goddamn bone.
8:52 A company forced to pay salary to it's employees?? That's their worst nightmare!
One of the more visually striking anime movies I stumbled upon by accident. Such a quality story.
Thank you for this video! I knew that unfortunately happens a lot in the anime industry but damn 100 to 200 hours over time a month, that is crazy
You did this very well! You captured the movie perfectly!
thank you :)
as an animator/artist just discovering this video the animation is giving me chills every frame from the detail
Now imagine when he had to make a promotional soundtrack for the movie; he probably had on of the most fun moment in his life
I was Waiting for this
AH! Puparia was an instant favorite. I was in awe when I first saw it, and Children of the Sea definitely pushed the same buttons in my brain.
im starting to learn 3d and vfx and I cannot even imagine the amount of work that went into this anime
i love both the movie and manga to the moon n back but wow i had no idea that its beauty came about at the expense of its staff. ill appreciate the animation tenfold with the knowledge of what theyve been put through. thank you for this video
Eating another rock like it's nothin'
I don't have a very big enough brain to get to the all of it, but I agree about the vagueness of the story.
Well only gods can truly understand the gorgeousness of this master piece ... Peasents like you just don't unstable a work of art
I loved the visual style of this anime so much
Such a bummer to hear how harsh it was
Awesome video.
Also I noticed you're wearing the Kiryu Yakuza bomber jacket! I have one myself lol
wow the graphics in this movie are insane how did they do that i cant believe it
high level graphics for sure
I wish I was at the pitch meeting. "OK guys so I got this idea, you know how water is always moving, right? What if we make an entire anime underwater and draw all the rippling, waves, and refraction by hand?"
I appreciate how you also refer to the original mOnga when making your analysis.
this was a really great video that explained a lot, thanks for takin the time!
The amount of work you put into this video... you deserve way more subs.
Love the videos man, thanks so much
Aside from what the video is about the production value of this video is really good and the style is great, looking forward to more videos in the future.
Stunningly gorgeous movie. I did find the storyline confusing, but engaging nonetheless.
I forgot about this animation masterpiece
It gave me a spiritual feeling, you will know if u have watched it
The animation style is so relaxing and calming
I never felt more at ease than when i was watching this movie
10 frames of this anime is the budget of seven deadly sins
Great video! I honestly wish this movie got more attention it’s so beautiful
This was a great first vid for me to find of you. Shows your character and personality well. Subbed and cant wait to see more.
this might be one of the greates videos I've ever watched
thanks a lot
Been putting off this movie for a while, thanks for convincing me to watch it right now.
Behind this gorgeous and stunning animation is a dark history...
I remember watching this, I didn't find it to be that moving tbh. It's got great animation and looks polished as a diamond fresh outta the box tho.
I really loved the subtle story as well! The production is such a tragedy tho :,(
And it doesn't even get an oscar award? What's really shit about most anime movies is that they don't get the recognition they deserve, yet crappy films still get a higher place such as Boss Baby or something (Like, who chose THAT film, it was the TOTAL BORE!). I hate that that's the truth for most of these beautiful films, it's so damn crap.
The entire anime industry behind the scene is very sad when you know their working conditions.
This movie has some of the best water effects in animation. period .
yeah the cgi team did really great work
With everything happening in the world, people aren't very likely to start solidarity protests for the animation workers. But damn the film looks stunning.

I don’t remember subscribing but thank you Stevem for uploading this I wouldn’t have known about this manga or anime for some time without this channel
EDIT:Oh looks like I last watched in august
With all the anime being made some real bad eggs have been just cranked out for seasonal production so it's good that some strain be put on the industry. ask yourself " do we really need 9 slice of life and 20 another world animes"? no we don't
I can't tell if it's gotten better or worse. 10-20 yrs ago most anime had 20- 60 episodes period. Now it's 100's of episodes and seasonal. Not because the quality has improved but so companies can keep pumping out content no matter how mediocre.
I suppose you can watch masterpieces over and over again and learn something from watching. If you feel like you've already learn it all
watch another great thing, then after so many cycles you decides to watch your first great masterpiece, then you learn again
this film is my favorite film ever like it solidified my commitment to becoming a marine scientist while continuing to pursue my art but it is heartbreaking to find out about this, animators deserve so much better. The way they’ve inspired people across the years is so beautiful and it is extremely messed up how they are paid n treated
Great video, thank you very much!

First time viewer,,, this is beautiful! Never heard of this film,, you do a great job with production and IP analysis! Gotta watch this movie now!
I'm so happy to see my instant reminder of puparia is shared
This is one of my most favourite movies to rewatch and I never knew of it's troubled behind the scenes, really unfortunate.
Thats a great video man!!
I had the chance to work in an animation studio past year, and yeah sucks the way how they avoid to pay us right compensation and OT. For me was fine because I just wanted to have the experience to work on anime. But poor artists thay have to deal with this every single day.
That AE86 on your shelf looks great
it's crazy how much puparia looks like this movie... they both have this ethereal feeling and character designs that you rarely see anywhere else, difference is puparia was made by one genius and is very conservative with its animation, while this movie is extremely animated.. anime films usually have more detailed animation than series, but when it comes to this level it's ridiculous..
Found this/you by chance and want to say great content and style! But also, what is that moon lamp I'm low-key obsessed with it?
Is clip on 05:22 from the same anime? Children of seas? Looks like hero stuff and i wanna know the anime source
I'm late but that clip is Mind Game, absolutely go and watch it, but it's not exactly "hero stuff".
As a anime fan , I really appreciate the hardwork in the animation they put in this anime.
This is my favorite anime animation ever! It's so good. It's really amazing I literally wish the best for all the hard workers! 🙏💗👌
