I think this movie changed my whole perspective on life. It's so beautiful and layered in so many ways and I don't even understand how something so meaningful could even exist on a screen as a movie.
The ending too me is understanding that life is precious and is all connected. Another concept is that when umi is disappearing, the light is universes being created after he starts disappearing the animals start eating the light or sharing it. It was so weird. It makes it feel like the film is saying we are out of touch of our presence in life and other life around us. This film has so much meanings and emotions in it. It creeped me out, cause I saw so many ways you can see this film.
Oh wow that is another interpretation, and its so true there are many different ways to interpret the ending and the movie as whole. Defintely very existential and philosophical
@@makayla7353 it's ok don't feel bad for writing, i wrote three times more than you (in another comments) so really it's fine, with topics like these it's hard not to write a novel, i like your theory, all of your theories you philosophers
Okay so hear my out on this, When Sora turned into a star and darted across the ocean, Maybe Sora turned into one of those “will o’ the wisp” stars that Umi showed Ruka close to beginning of the movie? What if those “Will o’ the wisp” stars were previous sea children? In Celtic and Japanese folklore “Will o’ the wisp” is known to be a “phosphorescent light seen hovering or floating at night over marshy ground, thought to result from the combustion of natural gases; ignis fatuus.” And or a “person or thing that is difficult or impossible to find, reach, or catch.” The Japanese translation to “Will O’ the wisp” is “Onibi” which is practically the same thing but also means “spirits born from the corpses of humans and animals. They are also said to be resentful people that have become fire and appeared.” In the lore, People try to catch them and follow them, and then they run out of luck. In other words “Will O the Wisp” and “Onibi” are some sort of faerie/ nature spirits. So what if Umi and Sora are faerie sea children that eventually turn into “Will O’ the wisp” at the end of their life cycle and they come and greet other sea children too? That’s could be also how Umi knew the the “Will O’ the wisp” was coming?!
I can see this too. I feel like umi was just literally like the water. Just riding wherever the waves took him. He didnt seem to be as ambitious and goal driven as sora. Just kind of went with it. But he had an extremely important role, and if you read my comment I posted you'll see the connection I "observed " between the 2 with sora being like the moon pulling the tides. And umi being the sun , shining brightly and giving light and energy to all. Sora was a very low enegry, chill, mysterious boy like the moon kind of is and umi being a burning ball of energy that all attracts to like the sun. So I feel like they were leading the girl(the land) to the deeper secrets of the universe. Like it all reminds of the big bang in a way with how the universe wove together. And she being a human was being given the keys of life sort of. Like how they shower previous children. I guess its wasnt that she was chosen. I think it was more symbolism of when ppl take the time to stop and look deeper they are shown treasure of life . Sora invited her because she was willing to look deeper and was a legitimate guiding light(the shooting star) to the answers. Did you also notice how at the end he went into the mouth of the whale? It occurred to me after the movie that he showed her everything s he would endure and she would end up in the whale. Trippy lol
Just to answer I red the manga many years ago and i remenber that in it they were showed that other (previous) children like Sora died the same way... but my memory is kind of blurry...it was like their destiny or something
@@TheAnimeTea Thanks for reviewing this aesthetically beautiful animation it was amazing to watch unfold thanks for trying to explain some of the symbolism it was a phenomenal film you just got a new subscriber
One of the scientists tells Ruka that whale songs are an intense stream of information (or something like that) and that we, as humans can barely put a fraction of what we feel into our words. Knowing that, it makes me appreciate the final scene even more for being such an emotional journey
I think the main thing that still has me confused is why Umi and Sora both disappeared, while Ruka got to stay on the earth and continue her life. Clearly she has some sort of connection to the events since she could understand the songs and smells like the other two, but in the end it was only Umi and Sora who were taken. Idk I definitely missed something lol
@@jessicaromero4798 I honestly don‘t think they left her but that they‘re still there just not in a physical form..Idk I just feel like Umi and Sora represent the ocean and the sky , just like their names say, so they‘re always around
I understand that they are "sacrifices" or meant to die early. They are the connection for te sea/universe for the humans. It said on the movie that the universe "likes to be watched" when another universe is created (something like that) and they choose the girl because she have a strong connection with the ocean and she is the female part of the creation. Just understand that they died because it was meant it.
I think the idea of her getting left behind could be a metaphor of like a Bodhisattva. Which in Mahayana Buddhism is a person who can attain nirvana but delays doing so in order to help suffering beings. I think this is now her role in the film. This is confirmed further by the character Dede who had a similar experience and is clearly a spiritual guide for others. This is clearly a more Eastern movie and not a very Western film. The West whether we like it or not is influenced by Christianity while the East is more influenced by Buddhism and those religions are reflected in art whether the director and cast practice those religions or not.
ruka representing the earth actually makes a lot of sense. the earth is also representing humanity, and rukas character development is similar to society’s growth and how humans have flaws, are selfish and grow up to become mature, like her coming of age
The universe scene makes so much more sense now that you explained it. I was watching it and didn't quite know what I was feeling not motivated, not hurt, nothing but I felt full. My heart felt like it would explode and was made of steel I wanted to put into words how it truly felt but I couldn't!
I read the manga and if you ask me the whole story line is Cthulhu Mythos without horror. Somethings were reference to Asian mythologies, others like the little mermaid. Plus when you read the manga befor watching the anime you might understand things in the movie better.
I totally agree that if people want to understand in-depth whats happening in the movie they should read the manga since its the original source material. I hope that the movie drives more people to want to read the manga.
I thought that Ruka's sibling was actually Umi being reborn as her brother. I never understood the whole message about how he and Sora are gone, but that their spirits are part of everything else.
I thought they were the sacrafice so that the universe maintains balance. They had a bigger part in connecting with the goddess but Ruka is the gateway she helps the universe connect with life by trusting Sora and Umi and being able to understand them helped them with their quest.
What broke me the most was the ending theme, I've heard the song before. And never thought about it. Until I hear it again at the end of the movie, it hit me differently. So differently that my soul resonated with everything, and somehow. I understood.
the parallelism of the astroid/seed and the whale and the birth of the universe to the mother giving birth and the cutting of the cord, and then ruka standing as earth with her feet in the ocean and looking at the sky - being that connection between the two - immaculate.
I watched this movie by myself in theatre when I was thirteen, and I remember that despite coming out of the theatre confused, I thought about this film constantly for months after. I tried to search up theories but during the release, the movie wasn’t that popular so the articles were scarce. I didn’t even watch the trailer, but I went anyways as the poster was so beautiful, and because I love the ocean, I was immediately sold. I’m eighteen now and I don’t think the movie really ever left my mind. It kinda changed me in a way, I don’t know how to describe it but I feel like I opened my third eye watching this as a dumb thirteen year old. I can’t describe in words the impact this movie had on me as a person.
This was a great explanation! I had a hard time comprehending what the heck happened while I was watching it. My initial thought was puberty though lol.
I think when sora and ruka kissed it has the meaning of giving life (when he transfered the meteoryte into her). And also we know that umi is the egg so it seems like he is the child of the earth and the sky : Sora and ruka (and this why they need Ruka) I think Ruka represent the wale (womb of the universe) Umi is the ocean, but also the water and anything who is alive needs water. Bearth of somoene need water (also in the womb of the mother) And Sora mean sky but also I think he symbolies the stars, the light that transformed nature. He knows about the cycle of life and the transformation of things during the time : The vanity. Also the sky reflet into the ocean to show the link between everything. Finally there are different stapes of life: Sora seems to know everything, for me he symbolizes the conscience of human, of life and death maybe in the beginning he was the universe but he sacrifice himself for a new bearth. Ruka her didn't know anything but with time she learns, she had to learn things for understanding the meaning of the universe and so she symbolize the vanity of life and she is the connecrion between Umi an Sora. She is just standing here like every creature of the world, she is waiting for Sora and Umi. And Umi him seams to be really inocent, he always smiling when he is with Ruka maybe he knows that in a way she is his mother. For me he symbolize bearth and life of everything, but also the different shapes of love. But it is just a theory.
I looked at it also as umi being the sun and sora the moon. If you noticed everything attracted to umi, and sora was just like a constant follow, and orchestrated things around umi like to moons pull on the tides. Umi shines brightly and sora always had this iridescent glow that was softer less bright like the moon. His priorities were all for umi. So I know our solar system is a small part in the universe. But the concept of Moon's gravitational pull on the sea,(like how sora was constantly around umi and made decisions based on the direction umi's life was headed) and that our solar system revolves around the sun(umi is shown to be a light that shines brightly and provides a kind of life that all creatures attract to and eat, like the energy given and used from the sun)really shows how umi and sora's connection is so relative the our worlds functions. the sun and moon dance around each other and the earth. And they both play equal effect the sky and sea. and the girl(the land) watches is all happen. The land is surrounded by water, sky and space. Of course there is much more interpretation, but the concept of the moon and sun really stuck to me. Even when they are awake. Umi was slept during the nights but sora was awake. And sora was much less himself during the day.
Loved this interpretations Leila! Its so true, seeing how Umi followed Sora without hesitation just like the tides follow the moon. The moon and sun could also be subtext to their relationship with one another.
The ending was just... absolutely gorgeous. I also like that even if you don’t have an explanation you can still understand the cosmic message that we are all connected and part of the universe. There are so many layers in the film but the visuals do a great job of communicating it even if you don’t catch all the symbolism in the movie
This movie definitly relied on showing rather then telling the story. Every little detail and scene symbolised something important to the overall theme without the characters having to say it or talk about it
when I saw how Sora transferred the meteorite to Ruka, I can't even call it a kiss, it's like a primitive instinct that "I have a very important stuff inside my body and I don't have the sense to put it on my palm and give it to another person by hand like a normal human being" Sora is entrusting Ruka and I adore that Ruka did not even flinched or reacted after that action. Sorry about this but I really need to let this out. hahhaa
Lol no need to apologize. I think it was also more interesting to show the transfer of the meterorite as a kiss than Sora just giving it to Ruka. I was definitely shocked by it though not nearly as much as the rest of the film shocked me.
Everything started and ended with particles. Even darkness is fill with particles. Your thoughts, existence, earth, universes are also filled with particles. Evey beginning and ending are connected. But it'll happen over and over again repeatedly. That's my opinion about this movie. At the last part, I was weeping. I'm experiencing the darkest time of my life at the moment and somehow this movie heal a part of me. It's distracted me away from what I'm suffering.
My whole spiritual outlook changed watching this movie. in the end I realized something so simple, something that goes over our head because we get so caught up in life.... but that’s just it... isn’t it. We are the universe experiencing itself.
I connect with this message as well! You can really feel and understand the universal connection between the themes of this movie and the parallels to real life.
Yes this right here. Gurl try doing shrooms and this will exactly make you feel like that. We are farts in this universe, we dont last long nor the universe will hover our existence but this reminds me of an indian god that sleeps and his being scattered into billions of countless fragments trying to piece itself into one and when the god wakes up we cease to exist as a seperate being but will conglomerate as our one original self which is the whole existence of universe itself. Its so crack potty and nonsensical but neither will make you insane. But it does make you more aware and free. When I died and came back to life its as if though I had hit the reset button but my inventory is still there. i have brought all my feelings and experiences after tasting eternity and now I am not scared. If I do hit my time I know I am ready to go. No holds bar and no second thoughts. Like Sora and Umi accepting their fate. Neither dead nor alive but ever existing
To be honest I think everyone has there own explaintion to children of the sea there are more then one explaintion and the only way you'll understand it is by experience yes children of the sea was confusing but some how I felt the meaning I didn't quite understand it I just felt it XD it's more then a meaning
And I think think the directors of the movie wanted people to just experience the moment and not so much dissect what it all means. But its fun to try to do so anyway.
How would you explain the ending of Children of the Sea? Also if you want to learn more about the people who worked on this movie I highly recommend you check out SteveM's video: ruclips.net/video/AG6f8RroTNA/видео.html
Ok this is really long cuz this movie really hit me deep and I couldn't think afterwards lmao... So... I think Umi gives clues in the beginning about the logic that would help decipher the film's messages. I understood the language of nature would be important- the practice of accepting the concept of dark matter that Anglade introduces later. After that first scene with Sora and Ruka about the knowledge in the ocean, I aligned my understanding of the film to my study of indigenous wisdom. I saw the Birthing Festival as a visual poem. I was still thrown by the message of these opportunistic scientists and whether Ruka should have been satisfied by Umi's transformation into matter itself, when we never receive Umi's inherent want... I could tell myself he's desireless and that's why he is destined to become the Universe itself, but... I definitely simped for Umi like, step by step with Ruka, so... I wanted to know what he wanted, or my ego really wanted him to have a dramatic desire. Still mad! lol. My favorite message was the healing of Ruka's emotional turmoil in her relationships; to her mother and anger; when she accesses Umi's memories and accepts that he must swallow the meteorite, even though she knows that means she will lose him- and that is ultimately tied to the overall message of Universal Motherhood; nurturing all elements in nature... I love the grounded acceptance of timelessness being based in reincarnation and inherited memory. I looked up the symbolism of hibiscus, which was laced throughout certain pivotal scene with Ruka, and is on the chair in the final credits frame. In Japan, a hibiscus represents gentleness- which Ruka struggles to employ although she seeks it, and masters by the end because of how her love for Umi nurtured that in her. More broadly, and spiritually, it represents elegant beauty, youth and positivity. And I looked up the kanji for Ruka. 'Ru-琉' means precious stone, gem, and lapis lazuli. Lapis Lazuli represents truth and universal wisdom. And 'Ka-花' means flower. So, kinda literally the birthing ceremony. I looked up the Buddhist meaning for blue flower, because of the Buddhist themes of reincarnation and Nirvana represented by Umi, and found that blue lotus represents victory of Spirit.
Lastly, I found an English translation of the manga by Igarashi Daisuke and highly recommend, it opens with Ruka as a grandmother, telling her granddaughter the story of the sea!
In the movie where they were talking about how the wind tells stories, but in ways that words could never express? I feel like that is the movie. There is so much and it means so much and there is just no good way for me to adequately describe it, and it's story, and it's effect, and its symbolism and meaning. There is no way I could explain any of that in words.
Nice interpretation, JellieFishu. That quote could also symbolize how the movie is able to express themes of the story visually rather than through words. Something which anime and animation in general do better than anything else, but this movie does a particularly good job of doing so.
Very good explanation of the film. I just watched it for the first time yesterday...afterwards I was wondering the hell did I just watch lol. It's a truly beautiful film though. The beginning reminds me of Ponyo (incredible what there able to do with water in regards to the animation). After your video I'm ready to rewatch it because it makes a lot of sense the way you explain it. Thanks for the review.
Thank you! I'm glad I was able to help a bit. And yes you will not regret watching it for a second time. Definitely a lot more symbolism in it that I couldn't even begin to cover.
I didn't really need explanation because the idea of this movie aligned almost perfectly with what my personal thots about life , death and space are, it helped me understand more and open new ways of thinking about it, however the thing about the names was very helpful because I didn't really understand that last part with the ocean and the sea so thank you
But Ruka didn't say " i am the universe" she actually questioned it , it was "I see, am I the universe?" , if you paid attention there was a part in that *colourful mess* scene when it showed the form of an atom that transitioned into the solar system,i think that Ruka represented the humanity questioning it's purpose of life and form. If atoms and the solar system have the same structure, and because tones and tones of solar systems(atoms) create galaxies(organisms) does that mean that we are universe itself living in another universe, that maybe it's just another living thing? I think that's another message that the creators tried to show us, "everything is connected"
@@voichitafrecauteanu7650 Same, the first time i read the manga it resonates to the thoughts i had but never know the arrangement of words for it. The theory that humans/organism is the universe is called microcosm and macrocosm. Every micro have a pattern resemblance with macro and vice versa. We are all the universe experiencing itself. All of us, me, you, animals, plants, rocks, storms, sea, stars, etc. are all made out of atoms that still abide the natural laws of the universe.
I just finished watching it right now like literally right now and i cant sleep cuz its literally inside my head, it was really confusing but it was indeed very beautiful.
I was in the middle of eating a bowl of cereal when shit kicked up. By the end, it was hopelessly soggy - - I was too busy staring, literally open-mouthed, gaping at the incredible beauty I was watching unfold before me.
There also a hint when luka ask jim about the whale voice,, then he said 'not like a human (that always explained something by words) whale can explain something their feels exactly to each other'. So i think the creator want to say,, instead of try to understand this movie, why don't you feel this movie :''v btw you did a great job by translating luka umi and sora's connection
I think that’s precisely the point, this gets carried on through Daisuke Igarashi’s other works, especially stated clearly in witches/majo (petra genitalix). Words and logic can only contain so much, true understanding comes from feelings/sensing and actions. Still kinda funny though... since his works is so dense in words but the conclusion ended up being “don’t think just feel”
I watched this movie with my two best friends and we were speechless at the end. I read the manga and its my favorite story of all. Such a unique and underrated art piece💗
I enjoyed the visuals and the cuteness of the characters. The way I summed it up was from the dirt/Earth is where we come, and shall return.. for Umi and Sora, it's the sea...
I highly recommend reading the manga. It fleshes out the characters, answers questions, expands on the plot, and induces even more wonder and mystery than a movie can. The manga is beautiful and makes one want to reread it immediately. One of my all time favorite stories! Definitely, absolutely read the manga if you like the film!
The sea is the blank canvas of Earth. Where every single black line would define everything else to come. The sea was the origin of life and in itself a random splurge of the elements of the universe giving it the right conditions to exist. When we see the sea emerging into the universe and colapsing into a fractal, it is those same patterns that allowed the very same beginning elements of the universe to flow into the life we have here. Patterns like that can often be visulized in fractals and nature accurately. Fruits, plans, fungi, can have their patterns found in these mathematical formulas. They have always been there, regardless of when we find them. The water is in isteld an agent of energy. It carves their way into rocks on the pay, leaving little ponds for the daytime within the rocks. These housing small universes of enclosed life, where fauna and flora inhabit, until they are once again sweapt away once the current rises, into the larger sea. During the era of discoveries, it wasn't uncommon to hear stories of the spanish, portuguese and holish on how the sea would reflect the stars so accurately that it felt like one was the expansion of the other. That you could also sail the universe. But to even put words into this is a failure. The movie's thesis is that words are one mechanism, that communcation could be done in other ways. If whales can communicate far more directly on what they see and what they feel, then the movie knew that a "plot" would be pointless. Studio 4C tried to attain this level of communication doing what film does: audio and visuals. Endless beauty through entire animated sequences hoping from surreality to abstraction, metaphor to the literal. No analysis is really going to make you closer to this film, only the sea itself can.
This film is a good example of how the East and West differ from each other. In Eastern culture there is more emphasis on the group and collective whole, while in the West we are hyper individualistic and typically value rights of the individual over benefitting the group. Buddhism has a really strong influence in the East and this film has a more Buddhist type of outlook. I really enjoyed the film and it's ending
This movie explain my first eye opening psychedelic experience very well and I think now people can understand it in some way what it is to understand the universe and what people know after psychedelic experiences
So I'm probably big dumb but I feel like the themes of connection in the movie are pretty much what alchemist or fma talks about alot In order to perform and understand alchemy you must understand how you are the universe but also the universe is you. You are the universe experiencing its self. You have to understand that everything is connected through energy and how energy changed but it never goes away. Which is pretty much the subject in this movie
I'm sure the manga has a lot more background info that the movie left out. I know the director of the movie wanted to add certain scenes about Umi and Sora when they were younger and it probably would have provided more context for their characters.
@@TheAnimeTea That's really interesting. I never knew that before. I really do wish that they could've packed more of the comics into the movie but the movie was already pretty long. Thank you for making the video btw! it's super cool seeing theories about the movie.
I must agree with the visuals of the movie. It was majestic. Yet I ended up getting a bit distracted by it's beauty, that I've completely forgotten the plot several times. (*Cough* Especially when Anglade was on screen *cough*) Though I do really enjoy the movie. It's like a watch once a week or month type of movie.
ShyMoonRyder_ Anglade is a gorgeous character I was also very distracted when he was on the screen. It's honestly the type of movie you could put on in the background just for a vibe.
In the manga it showed something about ruka being able to see what sora was seeing when he decided it was his time, and in that scene, he was getting eaten. Cause there were pictures of his legs or arms, or the last scene of him seeing a whole ass fish just swallow him, ah and also otth anglade and ruka heard a scream, which im assuming is sora's?....so like by saying that sora "lost his physical form"...did he get eaten?
Not to mention, umi also got eaten. His turned into lil star kinda stuff and the fishes around him just ate him. Was the reason to why the aquatic animals all migrated to that one area just so they could eat umi and sora? Im so confused
@@musclecowman6345 Basically yeah. Sora is “recycled” because he failed his purpose (that is colliding with the meteor, but he passed the job to Ruka, Ruka to Umi), Umi is “redistributed” to the earth’s organisms after successfully gaining the energy from the meteor (and launching it back to space). These three people in essence are earth’s gametes, candidates to fuse with the meteor (replenishing both earth and the universe). Sora was “artificially” created by the earth and nurtured in the sea (in the manga his other failed siblings have corpeus luteum marks where wounds should be), Umi was born of human but nurtured in the sea, while Ruka is both born and nurtured by humans on land.
Is an explanation of life in the visionary of the artist and creators.. Life and ending, all connected in the universe. Things that can't be explained by any human or scientist like sora said..Just think about it how well do you understand the world and universe.. lol its a confusing but if you just think about it, it relates to life itself and things that are out there... unexplained but can be seen.. Like mother given birth and life , and the process of death where we are connected and nutrition are returned to earth..Dark matter can not be seen but is there for us to think and see if we find it everywhere on earth.....😁🥲🤔🤫🤭
Before i watch this: I found it was like humans believed theyre better and higher up in the hierarchy. When in the grand scheme of things everything in the universe is equal, its all made from the same materials, it all holds purpose. We dont know anything really when we think we know so much. Its like how selfish we as humans are, we want everything including knowledge.
I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema. Even though I was super confused first time watching, I still cried because it was so beautiful and pretty. I guess the writers were right, it's all about what you feel simply watching the images.
hey i sort of noticed that too. i felt like her eyes turned to a bluish color because she's now connected to the sea, the universe, and the whole birthing festival
The granny said that when she's around ruka's age she met boys from the sea. So this breeding the universe most likely happened regularly. So theoretically, all galaxies and universe stuff are all born from that meteor breeding thingy. I wish they explain the reason someone is chosen as the guest and if that happen regularly, how come the government is still so clueless about it? Is the breeding place always happen in the same place or the breeding place keep changing everytime it happen?
The weird thing about all of this is I was searching are “humans” children of the sea I’ve never heard of this movie ever! but I’ve been doing researching on sea salt and how it’s has 84 minerals and trace minerals that’s vital to humans to replenish our electrolytes, and nerves so I’ve been thinking what if we shouldn’t be seeking in space that we should explore deeper into the ocean and sea 🌊 understand more of life and understand human history before we can understand space
That's crazy that your research brought you here, thanks for commenting! Honestly I think this movie explores that in a more artistic way and basically implying that the oceans and the galaxy are connected.
@@TheAnimeTea the other weird thing is I mentioned this to a co worker stated what if space is a big body of water because everything floats in space and a rocket and sub are similar lol
WAIT PLEASE PLEASE WHAT ABT THE GIRL AT THE END...In the beggining of the movie theres a girl that she didnt rlly like while playing soccer and she showed up at the end what does it mean?
It represents that Ruka will continue on and try to conect with other people. If you noticed in the begging of the movie, she have problems in express her emotions. But later, after she interact with the boys and literaly see a creation of the universe, she felt more free and more open to talk with people.
@@DudaMeras Yep basically Ruka never felt like fitting in on land with other people. But after experiencing the summer festival, the aquatic animals, the sea, Umi and Sora. She understood that humans are the same as the universe. That they are both diverse and ultimately alien but you can still live with them, understand them using feelings and actions. There was another Daisuke Igarashi chapter that explained this, story about a mute girl that “spirited away” but returned normal because of her experiences with the aquatic creature diversity. But i forgot which manga it belongs to.

@@TheAnimeTea that's it! I hope you like it! That movie really gave me all sorts of feelings lol. Great cinematography and a beautiful message. Also a lot easier to understand at first glance 😂
in my opinion beyond that the girl had social problems..the choice that girl was just the key to unite and give life to what was the life event of rebirth... it is because children are usually much more sensitive innocent and therefore they learn and study thanks to their experiences and the memories they keep as for the lady of the boat. As for Ruka, I bet that for others like her it would have been the same Giving importance to what is around us is only a fraction of what we can perceive.
Hey SWISP, There are probably a few different ways they approached the animation. I don't know too much about that aspect but the studio that did it was Studio 4°C. Here's their English website: www.studio4c.co.jp/english/ Maybe you can find out more about their animation style by reasearching them.
This is the an ocultist depiction of the birthing of a god. The sea they grew up in is a symbolic representation of the toils of solving oneself and becoming whole. Sora in theory is the spirit . The meteor or star in movie represents an enlightenment of the highest degree a ‘kiss from the sky’ which can only o occur when you become ‘whole’. The sea is represents multiple different things but the main thing is that it is represented as a mother . Umi is represented as the ->mother hence why there’s a golden seahorse in the womb of the whale. A male seahorse I think is one of the only creatures in this planet that carry’s the offspring. In the Hindu religion they’re very transparent about the possibilities of a human being. Human create gods or what people call gods but the truth about it Is that it is simply a a body of spirit. The researchers with a cone head is a direct representation of a direct line of rulers that popped up in various cultures. Some people would say they’re the family of Ra. In other words they are the watchers. The sea has another esoteric name called the abyss. the abyss can be described as the dimensions outside of this reality of matter and the creatures of the sea are the inhabitants of the realms beyond matter. When the birthing festival was happening the whole sea showed up and spiraled However toward the ending there is a boat with money that is depicted and this is what most people would describe as selling out or how stars sell their soul. The reason why celebrities are called stars are because everyone is born of Christ and celebrities undergo rituals to anchor them in dimensions below Christ. none are directly christened by the earth.11-3d. Which bring about certain abilities. The celebrities who sugar coat the Illuminati are the anti life force which eat Christ. They have infiltrated Christianity,& Catholicism and the whole world. This movie was probably made to speak to those who become whole and tell them that their only way is to go into the abyss and ‘die’ and become one with the universe but it’s an agenda the occultist are trying to push to replace Christ energy . To control everything is their agenda. From who is born and how their life ends. The source is christ energy and has no direct agenda other than life. The reason we have a pyramid on our dollar is because they plan to replace the source and become the ruling force on this planet. Kind of a lot and I don’t expect you to get it cause I’m not the best at explaining shit but the clues are everywhere
This vidoe was helpful for my understanding, but there was a bit more review than explanation which was a bit unnecessary from my opinion but thank you for giving some explanation, it was helpful!
Sorry for extended review portion, I'm working on being more concise with my explanations. Glad it was still helpful though and thank you for your feedback!
If you saw howls moving castle there’s another depiction of what happens when you become whole and reach enlightenment. Sophie is named after Sophia the early gnostic representation as spirit of ‘god’ or becoming whole with your spirit body. That’s why there’s a war in the story and the main general is madam suliman named after Solomon. The controller of spirits and demons. In almost every major religion there exists a practice which involves the practice of tapping into other energies. The biggest one is Judaism called the kaballah . If you notice the war ends when Sophia kisses the lost prince which means that those who tried to reach for power too become one with ‘god’ but the truth about this process is that it only happens to the pure of heart who are the opposite of these people who hope to attain Christ hood. There are opposite ways to obtain powers that to the untrained eye look like they could be christened. That’s why those celebrities undergo secret anchoring rituals which involve the taking of one’s innocence which is basically absorbing someone’s spirit. Back to the origin story Adam and Eve got kicked out the garden because eve ate the apple ? The forbidden fruit ? Eve ate a piece of someone’s soul . Eve represents the false divine feminine. Which is why there’s a lot of this false divine femininity being used as propaganda to make women and men become more unbalanced. Men become false masculine as do women. Or men become more feminine then their masculine. These celebrities are trying to deny people being balanced.
I think this movie changed my whole perspective on life. It's so beautiful and layered in so many ways and I don't even understand how something so meaningful could even exist on a screen as a movie.
Same, I just-
And my sister was watching it with me and was like completely bored? And I was like how???
no because same! i’m fascinated & feel a different connection to the universe & it’s entirety
it changed my whole perspective on life too
this is the most accurated comment
same dude gave me a total different outlook on life and the world
The ending too me is understanding that life is precious and is all connected.
Frr
It occurred to me after the movie that he showed her everything s
he would endure and she would end up in the whale. Trippy lol
Just to answer I red the manga many years ago and i remenber that in it they were showed that other (previous) children like Sora died the same way... but my memory is kind of blurry...it was like their destiny or something
yes i thought that too
Wow ... nice point of view👌
I read a sentence of that and I also thought about the same thing. I'm not reading it all tho since I'm a lazy bum
It’s so weird I didn’t really know what was happening but I knew what was happening it’s weird
thats the most accurate way to describe this movie
same!
best quote!
Hahahahahaha yes!!
This whole movie feels like a whale song. I cannot describe with human words but it was definitely beautiful
I just finished it and I-
I had no words the first time I watched lol, a true mind trip
The profile pic I can’t
Where did you watch??
I love the quote when the older woman says “you’re perfect just the way you are.” It always makes me cry🥺
I definitly shed a tear on that part, it was so sweet
I think the main thing that still has me confused is why Umi and Sora both disappeared, while Ruka got to stay on the earth and continue her life. Clearly she has some sort of connection to the events since she could understand the songs and smells like the other two, but in the end it was only Umi and Sora who were taken. Idk I definitely missed something lol
OMG SAME im mad that they left her and don’t understand why they left
@@jessicaromero4798 I honestly don‘t think they left her but that they‘re still there just not in a physical form..Idk I just feel like Umi and Sora represent the ocean and the sky , just like their names say, so they‘re always around
I understand that they are "sacrifices" or meant to die early. They are the connection for te sea/universe for the humans. It said on the movie that the universe "likes to be watched" when another universe is created (something like that) and they choose the girl because she have a strong connection with the ocean and she is the female part of the creation. Just understand that they died because it was meant it.
Like how do you go back to living a normal life after experiencing all of that? it would've been better if she left with them imo
They way they were able to throw in so many subtle details that all aligned is *chef's kiss* perfection
Thank you! And same I knew it had something to do with growing up but didn't realize how in-depth and cosmical (is that a word?) it would get
It’s rare that a piece of art changes your whole perspective on life.
I think when sora and ruka kissed it has the meaning of giving life (when he transfered the meteoryte into her).
And also we know that umi is the egg so it seems like he is the child of the earth and the sky : Sora and ruka (and this why they need Ruka)
I think Ruka represent the wale (womb of the universe)
Umi is the ocean, but also the water and anything who is alive needs water. Bearth of somoene need water (also in the womb of the mother)
And Sora mean sky but also I think he symbolies the stars, the light that transformed nature.
He knows about the cycle of life and the transformation of things during the time : The vanity.
Also the sky reflet into the ocean to show the link between everything.
Finally there are different stapes of life:
Sora seems to know everything, for me he symbolizes the conscience of human, of life and death maybe in the beginning he was the universe but he sacrifice himself for a new bearth.
I totally agree with your comments on this cause I was thinking the same after watching this movie deep downly
I feel like a part of my existence was explained after watching this
Everything started and ended with particles.
I have no idea how
As I watched it. I said to me self “this is something you watch when your high.”
"WOW"
Umi was a special treasure never meant to last. They were another universe personified who Ruka got a rare glance at.
A very beautiful and confusing movie indeed.
I have no idea how they managed to put those visuals into this movie, it felt like a fever dream
Agreed. I like to think of it as a beautiful and confusing lsd trip
Omgosh I didn't realize there was an after credit scene!
I totally missed it the first time I watched it
I was in the middle of eating a bowl of cereal when shit kicked up.
Such a wonderful video thanks so much for sharing 😁
I just watched it 2 hours ago and was looking for reviews to understand it further, thank you
Congrats on surviving Children of the Sea! And thanks for watching this video, I hope it helped explain some of the things going on in the movie.
I don't know why but during that hidden scene i cried even more
Woah hi you look like me
I watched this movie with my two best friends and we were speechless at the end. I read the manga and its my favorite story of all. Such a unique and underrated art piece💗
It truly is, definitely deserves more love
I enjoyed the visuals and the cuteness of the characters. The way I summed it up was from the dirt/Earth is where we come, and shall return.. for Umi and Sora, it's the sea...
Agreed, each character had their place to return to and it was really cool to see their journeys along the way.
Thanks for clearing things up. I had a blast watching the movie! Thanks!
That's a great interpretation Abraham and I agree, I can definitely see this theme in the movie. Thank you for your insight!
This movie explain my first eye opening psychedelic experience very well and I think now people can understand it in some way what it is to understand the universe and what people know after psychedelic experiences
The whole but especially the ending of this beautiful movie is a masterpiece.. The minds behind it, are absolute geniuses ❤
Thanks a lot for this clear / concise explanation, and your thoughts. I really enjoyed it, and will check out your other videos.
So glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your feedback!
I've only watched it 20+ times. I think that old lady was Siberian. That instrument she played is.
Whoa I was thinking it reminded me of 2001 a space oddessey, cool to see they took inspiration from that
thank you for this video! I was able to understand this amazing work of art better because of it :)
I godda admit even I didn’t understand what was happening
One of my best memories was watching this Children of the sea in a small indie movie theatre with my crush back then
I''m so jealous you got to see it in theaters, I really hope to see it on the big screen one day. It would be a beautifully overwhelming experience
The movie really didnt make sense but it was really beautiful. The books explain it more in detail if any of you are really curious.
@@TheAnimeTea Totally agree and you can not tell me otherwise.
The part when granny says “you’re perfect” hits me
Such a meaningful scene
Imagine watching that while on acid 👀 12:10
I didn't have an emotional reaction when that "I am the universe" part
Mainly aggravated scene to scene it didn't make any sense XD;
Lol I can totally understand that
I was just confused, I didn’t know what to feel or say so I just... didnt

This movie is so beautiful and I won't lie, I cried.
Anime that makes me cry tends to be my favorite anime, this movie was beautiful and worthy of shedding a few tears
I feel like I understood what it was saying but I didn't know how to explain it to myself
Before i watch this:
I found it was like humans believed theyre better and higher up in the hierarchy. When in the grand scheme of things everything in the universe is equal, its all made from the same materials, it all holds purpose. We dont know anything really when we think we know so much. Its like how selfish we as humans are, we want everything including knowledge.
howls moving castle also has a scene where he ingests a falling star or meteorite too. i wonder if its a japanese folklore concept
I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema.
Even though I was super confused first time watching, I still cried because it was so beautiful and pretty.
I guess the writers were right, it's all about what you feel simply watching the images.
I'm just a tad bit jealous you got to see it in theaters p0ppy. I bet it was absolutely stunning.
This is the most beautiful movie I’ve ever and I’m definitely going to go read the manga.
It really is and I hope you enjoy the manga!
You were great at explaining
This movie left me feeling like I understand the entire universe whilst being more confused than ever
nothing is more enlightening than 1 hour and 45 minutes of non-stop confusion 😅
Adk if i'm right or not.. but did you see ruka's eyes colour changes when she's underwater?
Ohhhhhhh, I'm literally gonna go back and check thanks for bringing this up
hey i sort of noticed that too. i felt like her eyes turned to a bluish color because she's now connected to the sea, the universe, and the whole birthing festival
This movie had me teary eyed 🤧😭
The meaning behind it all the visuals and symbolism can really get to you, I definitely shed a tear after the second watch.
this is my favorite movie. it made me the person i am today and it also immeasurably fucked me up
There aren't many films that you can say did this 😅 that's what makes me love it even more
can anyone tell me what the lullaby was called that Ruka was singing throughout the movie? i’ve been searching for days and i can’t find it anywhere😭😭
This movie has lot of spiritual aspect to it
The granny said that when she's around ruka's age she met boys from the sea.
I don’t know what i just watched man I think I just went through an acid trip
Honestly that specific scene made me feeling like I took something lol 😂
I really want "The Children Of The Sea movie 2"
I don't know if we'll ever get another movie after the way it ended but it would be great to see something similar.
@@TheAnimeTea the other weird thing is I mentioned this to a co worker stated what if space is a big body of water because everything floats in space and a rocket and sub are similar lol
the story is about us being made from the same matter as dying stars. We are being born because a star died. The end.
This movie was a whole ass fever dream Istg
The trippiest movie I've ever watched
overall, this anime was an emotional, beautiful, and breathtaking experience
truly a gorgeous movie
I loved this movie! Subscribed sis!
This movie was so good and symbolic. loved it
It was a beautiful movie!
Finally after seen hundreds of animes I can kind of understand what the ending was, I came to confirm my interpretation 🙂. Thanks 😊
Glad I could help!
How would you even go back to living a normal life after this
You can't, you have to turn into a star, fall into the ocean and become star dust.
I cried like a baby after watching it
It was strangely emotional once you're able to connect to the visual meaning and messages.
The ending was like a weed-high/mushroom-high trip!
Definitely the trippiest ending I've ever seen in an anime movie
What was the song during the ending credits afte the picture of the sunflower?? I have to know!!!
I have no idea, many people have asked about it but I'm not sure. Here's a website that lists all the songs from the movie: www.insoundtrack.com/movie/children-of-the-sea-2020

If u loved this movie you should also watch the fountain, absolutely beautifully done movie which covers a lot of the same themes in this movie.
Are you referencing the 2006 movie with Hugh Jackman? I'll give it a try because I love anything magical and otherworldly, live action or animated so thanks for the referral!
As for Ruka, I bet that for others like her it would have been the same
Giving importance to what is around us is only a fraction of what we can perceive.
How did they created that beautiful animation ? They draw every frame by hand ? Any ideas or references ?
Hey SWISP, There are probably a few different ways they approached the animation. I don't know too much about that aspect but the studio that did it was Studio 4°C. Here's their English website: www.studio4c.co.jp/english/ Maybe you can find out more about their animation style by reasearching them.
I just watched it. Effing loved it! Really wish I did get to see it in theaters!
theyre showing it in select theatres june 13 & 15 !!
wow thankyou for explaining ............ im still shocked
No problem, glad to help! And I understand, I was in a daze for a good hour after watching 😅
I need to rewatch it
This is the an ocultist depiction of the birthing of a god.
Omg found it ❤️❤️❤️❤️😢😢❤️ thank you so much
Glad to help! 😊
@@TheAnimeTea ayyeeaaahh thank you so much 😍😍😍
Why this channel doesn't have movie and episodes like ep 1to 111115
its not that kind of channel
This vidoe was helpful for my understanding, but there was a bit more review than explanation which was a bit unnecessary from my opinion but thank you for giving some explanation, it was helpful!
Sorry for extended review portion, I'm working on being more concise with my explanations. Glad it was still helpful though and thank you for your feedback!
@@TheAnimeTea your welcome, and thank you so much for tell us were we can find the manga! i hope it's as good as the movie
I just finished the film and i am so confused, thanks for the explanation
No problem! I felt the same and that's why I made the video lol.
I can dig that kind of after life for all ! 🤟🏻❤️🥰💋
Same!
