In terms of animation and music, this film doesn't disappoint. When it comes to the actual storyline, though, I had some serious quibbles with it. It starts out decently if somewhat languidly paced, and for the first two acts I was engaged, but the last act had me very, very confused. I was totally baffled by the conclusion, even though I admiringly appreciated the animation. This is one of those movies where it's best to think of it as a visual experience rather than a compelling story. On that note it plays better.
I understood it completely and loved the movie. If you didnt understand it it's because you have very grounded concepts of the world and weren't willing to just get lost in the magic and the movie's mythos.
I think we should read the manga which this movie was based from. I was very confused for the last act, too. There's lack of information to understand.
@@zigzagdoublezee2033 Late response but it's probably because of the movies casual use of feeling Zen and Buddhism. (Which is very common to include in everyday life for most in Japan.)
THANKS! Hey Man, You may not believe me but I actually did the english voice for Umi in the film. You can check my website: lyndenprosser.com for proof.
SPOILER WARNING(LeftTheShockersOutTho): The movie is about two boys who were found in the sea that have a connection with the ocean science can't explain and the female protagonist encounters them and the only way I can describe it was that she was chosen by the ocean and the boys are it's ambassadors. People say they don't understand the movie which to me just means they're closed minded. The movie is about the creation of life, birth and death, higher purposes, wanting to be something more than you are, ect. It's the PERFECT fantasy movie that keeps strings to real science but makes something beautiful and magical. The movie is absolutely enchanting. The only thing I would touch on were two unanswered questions. How she has such potent understanding of the boys from the very start, and a disfigured hideous what appears to be shark that briefly appears in the film and doesn't return.
I actually bought my best friends teenage daughter volume 1 and 2 graphic novels, as the cover looked so different to the other things in the comic shop. I might before rapping it have a sneaky read.
His ethnicity is never outright said in the movie, but both him and Sora were found off the coast of the Philippines. However id take it into consideration that the movie shows the boys can travel immense distances and keep up with rushing fish and dolphins. So they could have migrated from somewhere else.

Was anybody able to make sense of what happened?
