@@janco333 I watched it yesterday, I think the animated surroundings were really beautiful but I'm just really confused. Maybe that's why I don't get the hype but it was a nice movie.
Exactly my situation! I finish crying 2 min ago, then put some facialcream in my skin to feel a little better & search review or opinion about the movie cause I absolutely believe is a underated masterpiece. I love it so freaking much!
There's two arguably insignificant scenes I absolutely adore in this film. The first one is when Shizuku and her sister are fighting and we see a shot of their dad coming home from work, while coming up the stares, he passes a woman who lives above them and he gives her space to walk down and she apologizes for cramping him. That's it, he nods and goes up and the movie continues and would've continued the same without that scene, but I like the film way more with that scene. It's just so...regular. Like it's such an everyday thing and it also lets us somehow see or pay attention to the perspective of the father even though we learned literally nothing. Movies just tend to revolve around the main character and the viewers don't rly get to see much out of that story or out of that character's perspective. That scene just showed that the world, this story wasn't revolving around Shizuku, it just showed that there's so so so many people with their own stories and it's a big world, the main character of the film is just one of them, trying to figure herself out amidst all this. Then the other scene I love is the end credits, while they roll the credits, we see people walking on that bridge area where Shizuku and Seji passed by on their way to that place. We see all these people, all distinctly set apart from eachother in such a subtle way, all passing by with their own thoughts and things to do. We also see Seji and Shizuku riding back on that bridge but they aren't pointed out from the crowd, they just blend in. Some people wouldn't even notice them. This also just emphasizes the point the film made earlier. That Seji and Shizuku are just TWO of all these people and that's it's a huge world with endless stories. It's such a simple and beautiful truth. Makes you think alot. Maybe i'm reading too much into it lmao but I just think it's wonderful
Wow you have such a great point ! I really apreciate it a bit more now :) but in terms of the credits, whe don't see Shizuku and Seji comming back, i when t to see if i saw them bcs i didn t remmeber but i couldn t fing them comming back :c
The library scene wherein Seji said that he'll wait for Shizuku to finish reading and the two smiled at each other. No physical touches or anything, but it made my heart flutter. ❤️ Ohhh the things that we do for love. 🥰
This movie has so many themes, finding what you should do in your life, finding your inspiration, dealing with self doubt, etc. while still representing adolescence in such an organic and mature way. It is a slice of life masterpiece...
I watched Whisper of the Heart for the first time when I was about to graduate from high school and had to make major choices about my future. I was unclear about what I wanted to do with my life and to see how passionate Shizuku and Seiji were about their dreams made me ugly cry. They were so young and had so much ambition and yet here I was, a majorly depressed high school senior with no dreams or ambitions. It inspired me to go out and try to find what inspired me to have the same drive as Shizuku and Seiji.
How are you doing now? I feel the same way but thanks to this movie i now want to build on my strenghts and passions instead of chosing the save path and doing something I don't enjoy or doesn't interest me. I'm 17 now and soon to be finished with school. I don't know where I will land up but I will definitly pick a path for the future that suits me and my talents.
@@gervldro omg I forgot I made this comment haha. I'm doing well now! I graduated high school and am now pursuing a bachelor's degree with plans of taking the LSAT and applying to law school! It took me a bit to set a path and goals for myself. I wish you success in the future :))
@@gabriela-tb6un so you're studying laws :) i still don't know what exactly i want to study but laws is something i have in mind. Do you have an idea which job to take after finishing your studies?
I feel the same way too. I have a problem of being buried in self-doubt to the point I can’t remember who I am, but as I watch this I remember the reason why I was enchanted by this film in the first place; because it spoke to who I was as my own person, and that’s why I always retrace myself when I watch it. I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life either, but whoever you are reading this, I wish the best for you and your world!
I just watched this movie like 10 minutes ago and I really enjoyed everything about it. I’m a 13 year old and watching this makes me realize how I still have time to decide my future and how studying to get a good job and grow up isn’t for everyone. Both of the characters want to do something more in their lives then just go to school and be like the rest and this makes me feel that I should do what I want to do,that I should follow down my own path
Yeah, I rewatched it right now after watching it when I was really small I didn't think much of the story but loved it. Now I'm 14, and watched it few hours ago and I feel like I have wasted my life so much and missed out on living. I have so much mixed emotions about this, I didn't know how sad I was with the way I was living. I don't know if I'm good enough for any of the jobs that seem interesting to me, I may want to be an animator or artist, yet I don't know anything yet. I hope you are doing good, you should definitely choose any path that your heart wants.
I really like the connection between this movie, the cat returns and kikis delivery service. In kikis delivery service, the old man that was in the clocktower is the same old man in whisper of the heart, in whisper of the heart the cat barren is the same one that is in the cat returns the barren in the cat returns even mentions his creator. Further more moon or muta in whisper of the heart is the same muta in cat returns and his full name is ronaldo moon. Theres a few more bits and pieces that connects all of these films together but im lazy so i wont write em.
The Cat Returns is canonically a spinoff of Whisper of The Heart based on the story that Shizuku wrote. Even the protagonist in TCR was following a cat around until she found a "treasure", just like in how she found the shop in WotH. I like to think that Shizuku finally polished the story like Seiji's grandpa told her to and it got adapted into a movie
Stupidcow this is my joint first fave studio ghibli film! (tied with my neighbor totoro) because its so cute, inspiring and i could watch it so many times and never get bored of it. close behind being my fave is also howls moving castle
Agree wholeheartedly. I am a long time fan of Miyazaki, but Whisper Of The Heart is my favorite Ghibli film. And I think it's one of the very best films ever made about adolescence. Both the young and mature can be, at the very least, inspired by the film's wisdom. A funny little personal anecdote I have with this film: I first watched this in my early 20's, at the time I had a friend who's little sister was just turning 17. I bought her a copy of this film thinking it could maybe help her out with whatever 17 year old's deal with. I'm in my early 30's now, and a couple years ago she texted me saying she had watched the film and how much she loved it. Not sure why she waited 10 or so years to tell me that, hahaha.
My absolute fave anime--PERIOD! Not just the best of Ghibli; and you hit all the notes: it's a look at life, love and the creative process. And I really can't think of another movie that has NO VILLAIN! Director Yoshifumi Kondo died a few years after wrapping this film, and as part of his eulogy, Hayao Miyazaki said that Kondo was hopeless at playing "Lifeboat", because he always wanted to save EVERYBODY! That says so much about this anime...
This is actually really reasurring. I've always been scolded by my English teachers because I'd put a lot of detail into the setting and characters but my climaxes were always lackluster and unexciting because I hated approaching cruel truths. This expands my horizon's a little, I don't need to be ruthless with my characters to make interesting stories. Thank you for this information.
For me the true ghibli masterpieces are: Whisper of the heart When Marnie was there Only yesterday Grave of the fireflies Tale of princess Kaguya Spirited away Princess Mononoke Howl's moving castle Porco rosso Edit: also Nausicaä of the valley of the wind, even though I still think the manga is even better. I guess I'm weird but I don't just hype Miyazaki, I absolutely love both his and Takahata's works. And of course the only one Kondo made.
you definitely forgot a few. I've seen all the Ghibli movies now except Only Yesterday. When Marnie was there, which for me belongs in the lower half. Also Howls Moving Castle belongs to the worse Ghiblis for me. In your list are missing in any case fillme like Nausicaä, Totoro, Laputa, Kiki and maybe From up on Poppy Hill and Porco Rosso.
It's sad that most people don't appreciate how good the anime film Whisper Of The Heart actually is and only use its pictures for overrated and terrible clickbaity Lofi Hip Hop videos. Edit: This comment is not meant to hate on lofi. I apologize if anyone feels in that kind of way. I only meant to call out the clickbaiting videos. Everyone is free to post opinions and everyone can enjoy what they like. Peace.
Actually in the beggining it was indeed the whipers of the heart background but i think it got a copyright problem, that s why he had to change it, asking and hire someone to make it, maintaining the " atmosphere "
This is probably up there fighting for the title as my fave Ghibli film, even as one that I saw after all the other more notable films. There's just something so tender and overflowing with emotion about this film, I always attributed that to how perfectly, yet simply, it captures the emotion of a young lady experiencing love for a partner and love for a craft full force for the first time. I found it really relatable in that aspect, I was probably in a really similar mindset when I first saw this movie and it captures that feeling really well with it's story and visuals while being simple and innocent enough to feel very real. Thanks for making a video on such an underrated movie!!
i saw this movie today and it bring me to tears. this is the best movie and the most emotional movie i have ever seen. i felt so close to this movie and i still don't know why. but all i know is that this movie remind me how much i want to make my dreams come true and how important is for me to remember every day that i will do it if i try with my whole heart and if always believe in myself. i feel like her, and like her im gonna make my dreams come true.
As a now published author who found my passion for writing at a young age, this movie is one of my favorites. I watch it when I feel uninspired and run down. I watch it at least once a year, and it never fails to make me smile. ❤️
My two favorite parts of this movie is one of the dream sequence where Shizuku is desperate to find a missing part of her story to make it great...the illustration of the scene is where she's looking for that bright piece that will elevate her writing...then when she founds it it's revealed to be a dull bird chick and the scream afterwards....chills. It's every artist nightmare. To strive for greatness only for your work to be mediocre. Then the scene when she finished the book where she's anxiously waiting for the old man's critic of her work. You can see how she see's it as something as a fight or flight situation...she's desperate. Then when the old man says his honest opinion, she broke down crying. Relieved. It's just......auugghhh the feels. It hits hard!!
Only Yesterday and this are my top two Studio Ghibli films. I'm still trying to figure out where the others rank, but some times I think it's just useless to rank them. They all provide something special and it all depends on my particular mood at that moment.
Couldn't have said it better! Whisper of the Heart, too, is my favorite anime! It doesn't indulge in over-the-top fantasies like many other animes, but is a heartwarming slice-of-life film about Shizuku, a young girl whom we all can relate to. It's a wonderful film in which mundane scenes are filled with subtlety and nuance. At the end, I feel that we know so intimately Shizuku as a person-her fears, emotions, innermost thoughts-that it's like meeting someone you never will forget.
I've just seen the movie and it's opened my eyes and given me a whole new aspect in pursuing my dreams. I've been struggling for a while now and decided to give this movie a try at 1AM on a work night and i don't regret it. It's simplicity shows it's true beauty. As a studio ghibli fan it's no surprise that i enjoyed it from start to finish. To anyone reading this, I wish you the best of luck in whatever you put your heart into. Thank you for your time!
I've watched a few ghibli films, and tbh I've not liked most of them. But whisper of the heart for some reason strikes very true for me. As a creator myself, Shizuku's emotions are so realistic, relatable and genuine, that it just strikes such a chord with me. The film has one main theme, but it explores that theme so tenderly and effectively. Because of how gently the film goes, imo it really shows the process and emotion that comes with being a creator, finding your path, establishing identity, determining self-worth, proving that self-worth, and other emotions/themes that come with the creative craft. I absolutely love whisper of the heart. It's beautiful because it's very accurate, and very human.
Im watching it currently for the first time and im trying to find the library scene where the dude returns her dads lunch and goes away singing the country roads song and im dying laughing
By the way i finished it and seiji and shizuku are literally perfect for eachother (its weird to think they are in middle school though but i mean i dont mind)
@@noveparker8597 middle school doesnt mean american middle school. In Sweden where i live you end middle school at grade 9. So technically your level of high school. Since the movie is set in Japan, not Sweden or north American, they are are 15 going on 16 according to the Japanese school system.
Ah i see your a man of culture as well. Whisper of the heart is my favorite movie ever!! I can’t even start to explain how much this movie means to me ❤️
this is my favorite studio ghibli movie because of its simplicity and relatability of the story. i watched this when i was 25 years old and i ugly cry after i watched it because i already forgot the feeling of being young and enthusiastic in pursuing dreams. adulthood really drained the life out of me, but this movie gave me hope.
I would like to mention the freedom and f set in this movie, she wonders around this city and finds a mysterious Neighborhood in which she finds a quaint little shop which makes he into a writer, luck makes it so she can fall in love with someone for her and then push herself, the final scene is the most powerful as it gives the most satisfying ending of any movie I’ve ever watched.
I first watched this movie because a friend recommended it to me when I was living in Japan. I actually had pretty low expectations coming in, but after watching it I can honestly say it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
This video was recommended to me not too long ago and felt like I'd seen your name before. I remember you commented on one of my videos a year ago and left a lasting impression on me, on wanting to improve my music. When I first saw this film a couple of months ago I knew that Whisper of the Heart would be one of my favorite animated movies and glad you're giving it recognition. Seeing my struggles as an artist being perfectly portrayed with Shizuku was really amazing.
Just watched this movie and thought it was amazing. I really related to Shizuku’s story too. I wanna work in the film industry but it’s not a very standard job. I’m in the exact same position as her wondering if I should go to high school or not and I’ve been very lacking in confidence and doubtful that I could make it... but this film has totally inspired me to go for it :) The scene at the end is literally where I am right now. Loved the characters and obviously the story and the animation was beautiful. So underrated
This movie left me with a bitter sweet feeling. They confessed their love for each other but we never got to find Louise. Better yet, we don’t know how the apprenticeship or professional writing went :( I love this movie but it left me asking questions.
but that’s the beauty of it, the unknown, i feel like the ending of it allows the viewers (us) to just live in the present, the future will come in due to time, the movie was very much living in the present because the future is scary thus we should simply live in the present and just enjoy it.
I remember when I first watched this anime with my mom, I was only ten. With the combination of beautiful pictures and romantic story line, I fell in love with this masterpiece immediately even though I don’t get much takeaways. I watched the anime again when I was in my teenage, i felt like I kinda grab the underlying meaning of it since it was so relatable and gave me the courage to stay positive while deciding my future major for university. Now I am in my early 30s, I still enjoy this anime very much. Especially during low times, the nostalgia aura and calming effect in this anime catches me and reminds me how I came along as a little girl I used to be. This underrated gem will forever dwell on my top list amongst all Ghibli’s, I wish more people can appreciate it.
I liked this movie very much. Together with "Only yesterday", "when marnie was there", "from up on poppy hills" and "grave for the fireflies", it is one of my favorite movies from Studio Ghibli. The movies of Miyazaki are nice and all, but they are fantasy movies. I do not seem to feel strongly connected to characters from fantasy movies. In fact, the Miyazaki movies that I liked most are "Kiki's delivery service", "Spirited away", "my neighbor totoro", because the main characters are felt very human and more psychologically developed. For me, this is the key for winning the audience hearts; not just a colorful fairy tale with stunning drawings, but human like characters, with emotions, and less "cool hero" attitude
whisper of the heart is so comfy. my favorite movie for the universe is nausicaa, its been my favorite since i was a child. whisper of the heart is so different from nausicaa but i can appreciate it more now because its the kind of media i want to make. its feels personal and regular, its comforting, soft, subtle, all the while moody and atmospheric. im working on a love story that takes place in small town america, in a similar middle/high school time frame. im trying to focus on the characters and dynamics between them since its very plot light, most of the story is driven by interactions. the title is a wip, but im thinking of calling it “the wind whispers our secrets”, paying homage to whisper of the heart and the wind rises.
Every time I'm feeling upset with my progress in any aspect of my life and need a bit of a comforting pep talk I watch whisper of the heart. It never fails to calm me down and renew my motivation. And perhaps because it brings me back to when I was a little older than Shizuku but in the same spot in my life it always makes me cry lol. At the opening! just something about the nostalgic vibes I guess lol. Thank you for putting into words all my feelings about why I love this movie.
I love Spirited Away and it was the start of my love affair with Ghibli. Among them all, Whisper of the Heart is my favourite. It is seriously the most underrated and the heroine is one I relate to most. I feel a personal connection as I am in academia. The anxiety, the confusion, the fear of writing down my thoughts haunted me for a long time and it only took the magic of Whisper of the Heart to get to write. I am working towards a doctoral degree and this movie really was a chicken soup movie - something that comforted me when I'm not doing good. A big round of applause for making this video 👍👍
This is a movie where I actually can’t really find a single thing to complain about. I love everything about this movie. The story, the characters, the pacing, the visuals, the soundtrack. This movie is top tier in my opinion.
I'm glad I watched this movie when I was in the weird early teenage years, as if has a lot of important messages for young people. Being patient with yourself, figuring out what your dreams are, understanding what you need to do to achieve them, learning to find magic where ever you can.
This is perhaps my favorite movie from studio ghibli. The fact that it portrays everyday life so well is why I love it so much, and consider it a masterpiece. I was a child when this movie came out, and it is able to make me feel the way I did when I was young.
I connected so much with this movie, it has brought me to tears multiple times without it even trying. I am at the stage of life that shizuku is at and seeing her strugle to find herself or her passion for the future really resonated in me as I, myself have been dealing with problems about picking what I should do in the future. I can really feel the impact when she realized she dont know what she will do in the future or what she wants. The emotions she felt really brought me to tears as Ive been feeling that for months on end, being pressured by just hearing others ambitions and goals for the future because having none yourself. I also felt just very lonely :" seeing her love story with reiji is heartwarming but after awhile kinda makes you feel empty, but thats what Im trying to accomplish, Im trying to have a stage in my life where can I watch this movie and have a warm feeling rather than an empty feeling (if that even make sense).
I watched Whisper of the Heart then immediately after I watched The Cat Returns. As a young writer watching this film I felt so called out. It’s definitely my favorite movie and seeing The Cat Returns made me have an even deeper appreciation for it. After watching I understood how all those little things influenced Shizuku and inspired her. How the story she started out with changed drastically from what it used to be. Like Shizuku, I seriously admired the people who found their passions and worked relentlessly to polish their talent for it. I didn’t know what direction I should go and what path was right for me. I refound my passion through annoying the piss out of my former teacher and am currently working towards it. Unfortunately, this is where the Kiki’s Delivery Service labor-of-love-burnout comes in. If you find your calling, remember to take breaks.
I don't even know why I want my own romance life to be like theirs or like the story from "from up on poppy hill." it just gives me that tingly, "kilig" feeling I know I won't feel.
I love how this film showed regular, everyday things. Scenes of drying out comforters on the balcony, trying to find the switch to turn off the light, shopping in a market. Small, everyday things we take for granted. It made the film so comforting. Felt very Ozu
Honestly Ive watched a bunch of anime movies but this just hits so different. Only movie i can rewatch and i feel the same things ive felt from the first time and more.
I started writing in elementary. One of my best, which I lost ages ago, was a class assignment to write a story about a Gnome. I think I got a good grade on it. I have a overactive imagination that I still have today. I continue writing up to high school when I realize how weak my earlier works were and abandoned them. I still write, but I draw inspiration from others, from reading books, playing video games, watching movies, like this one. Studio Ghibli films are the best and everyone must watch them at least ones in their lives, my first was My Neighbor Totoro back in elementary when they played it for movie day, another one that interested me was a cartoon version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In the 90’s they made a lot of cartoons about nearly everything. Still Studio Ghibli is the best even if your not interested in anime, or ever will be.
I watched the movie for the first time today and I really loved it It inspired me to go a path that doesn’t stress me out as much as my current one does
Just finished the movie and it is fantastic. What a movie, what a movie, it sucked me right in. Just beautiful with a lot of details. I didn't saw the film, i experience the film. Just beautiful 💞
It's one of the most underrated and underappreciated Ghibli movie besides Only Yesterday. Personally, as a small time writer myself Shizuku is very much relatable to me. Even though it lacks the standard Ghibli's style of fantasy elements it nonetheless delivers a strong emotional impact with its motivational message and real life relatability plot as opposed to being fantastical like other Ghibli movies. I believe most teenagers undergo stages in their lives similar to Shizuku's and this movie is sure to inspire them to be emotionally stable and help build confidence in times of crises. Apart from the wonderful quality of the story, the Japanese version of 'Country Road' had me fall in love with this movie.
personally what makes this movie so great for me is that it literally is a "real" slice of life. or atleast that's how i'd call it. lots of animes these days that fall in this genre sure can be called a slice of life but most of the happenings on those are literally stuff that would rarely happen to someone irl and the only thing going for them is that they don't have supernatural things going on for them and that's how they probably came to be called "slice of life." i hope this makes sense lmao im not dissing anything here i love slice of lifes these days but i am merely pointing out why whisper of the heart for me is so distinct. it makes feel at home and gives me the familiar vibe and vision of a life i once called home. it made me feel as if i was in the movie like i was experiencing similar situations even though i hadn't. oh and can i just say the animation and just everything about it is👌 edit: tmi - i literally came across this masterpiece of a film listening to "i like me better" slowed down ver. on youtube and i happen to get curious about the gif in the background bcs it seemed like a movie or anime i'd love to watch so i did some reverse searching and oh boi was i not wrong about this movie at all
I completely agree yeah, and so many of the little scenes that are added build to that like greeting a neighbour or having a conversation with your parent about using a bag or even stumbling across a cool little place and then it just being a cool little time and not some huge huge adventure
Like many others here, I too just finished watching this movie and have come here to find like-minded people who’ve enjoyed it as much as I have. One second I’m laughing, then crying the next. Never thought I’d relate to a 14yo character so much as an almost 21yo. Thank you for this video ❤️
I love everything about this movie. It was aesthetically pleasing even if it was made in the 19's, storyline was great as well. I just wish that the cat couple could've met in the end
I'm 18 but now I'm going through this phase and it's strangely comforting to know that I can relate to this anime maybe my growth is slow but at least I'm starting
I am so happy to see someone talking about this movie. I went through faze when I was obsessed with Ghibli movies and I was specifically looking for ones I didn't see. I found this movie and watched the english dub on kissanime. What a movie this was! Like you said, it was beautifully simple and told a beautifully simple story in a beautifully heartfelt way. A film that is equally inspiring as well as entertaining.
This film is so underrated even by fans of Studio Ghibli (same for exemple for Poppy Hill), you're so true to give it some some attention, that's a really sensible movie: i think many of us even if we aren't into writing can relate to Shizuku experience, as we had same as preteens. Personnaly i would still have add something about her family, who probably participate in her love for books (her dad's a librarian) and are so understanding: best parents in a Ghibli movie. I would also like us to have a thought for Yoshifumi Kondō, who died way too soon (at 47 by a disease that's very common in Japan: excess of work) and can have produce many other jewel like this one: RIP!
I have just started watching Studio Ghibli movies - From Up on Poppy Hill, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Whisper of the Heart. I loved that all the 3 movies I started with were so much of a coming-of-age type. Please share recommendations of the same type - in the studying/finding oneself environment
The thing that stood out for me is the famous scene where Seiji plays the violin and Shizuku sings. At first she is deeply insecure, just facing away from Seiji. As the song progresses she becomes more and more confident in her body language, takes short glances at him, and towards the end she really shines, engages with all the musicians and really looks like she is in a good place. Its like she realizes that her writing (the lyrics) is nothing to be ashamed of, people apreciated it!
For me all movies are masterpieces. They've all taught me something different and all made me feel something unique. I'm glad and grateful that my childhood had Ghibli. Awesome video! And best of luck for your writing future. Stay safe from corona!
this film absolutely took my breath away, i love all the studio ghibli films but this one is just so pure and adorable in the way that it approaches adolescence and growing up. i love it forever, an honest treasure
My favorite Studio Ghibli film... my favorite anime film... my favorite film. It really captures slice-of-life perfectly, and aesthetics are off the wall. I watch this movie any time I'm feeling down and I'm immediately immersed in the crowded, beautiful streets of Tokyo along with the characters. It's really fantastic. (p.s. I love it so much, I named one of my plants Seiji Amasawa.)
No matter how big or small your dreams are but it's yours so don't neglect them there might be time you are uncertain about them and might be anxious but don't give up what is yours humble beginning will lead you something big and beautiful you don't need to always figure things out and be happy for the sake of society sometimes you need believe in nature and let yourself to feel emotions
I wish I saw this movie when I was younger. It somehow missed my radar. This is such a wholesome slice of life movie. A true masterpiece. I'm just now discovering it in my early 30s and wish I saw this sooner. As the summer draws to an end, this heart-felt story got a grown man in his feelings.
Kudos for throwing in that Final Fantasy X song! It was such a pleasant surprise :3 Edit: I gotta say, it was nice to hear how perfectly a song from my favourite video game goes with my favourite ghibli movie. Thank you for that!
Recently started watching all the ghibli movies (only one I had seen prior to watching these was spirited away) and I just finished this one tonight and it was amazing to put it simply. I felt so many different emotions, and it was the perfect length. 9.8/10!
Great review, Joshua! I literally teared-up. I’m going through a lot in life now though too and have been for a while. I’m excited to watch this movie and from your review, I already love it’s message. I’m a songwriter, poet, and lyricist too and am happy that I learned a while ago that art and music are crafts too, and not simply a mystical gift given to a select few like you mentioned, and I’m happy to hear that this movie promotes that truth. The only advice I’d like to give you about your review, which might apply to your writing style too is to be careful of being too cerebral and getting out of balance with “the heart”!😉 Get it?!?😆👍 I’ve done that too and it seems to be a common misstep that many people make who start to take anything seriously, not just writing. Again, this was a great review. Thanks for making it!
I thoroughly enjoyed! What a lucky girl, 2 nice boys falling for her and professing their love. I really wish she would have told her friend that the boy she liked didn't like her back and had fallen for her.. but all in all, so sweet. The ending was so abrupt but cute. I just finished When Marnie was there, How'ls moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke.. I'm so late watching these films, but I'm happy I'm alive to see them. I have more to go.
Whisper Of The Heart surely doesn't get the attention and credit it deserves. It is truly one of the most remarkable animated movies I've seen.
Rusty Crap this movie is literally my favorite movie of all time.
@@109games6 It's on my Top 15 along with Studio Ghiblis and American Classics

Love this commentary! Just made me appreciate the movie so much more :)
Woahh, this is a beautiful, beautiful observation. :D
Woah... that's some observation!
Makes you love this movie even more🙌
gosh i love the way you wrote about that... i totally agree and you just made it so magical
So so true.... I also loved that scene and seijis jesture ❤
@@gervldro I'm thinking about doing family law! I'm not amazing at public speaking so I don't think I'd do well as an attorney lol
Ashley Banegas where are you from? I just watch it a few hours ago also, did you go to the theaters?
dogoflords yeah I did
dogoflords I’m from Long Island I went to Island 16
Yeah, I rewatched it right now after watching it when I was really small I didn't think much of the story but loved it. Now I'm 14, and watched it few hours ago and I feel like I have wasted my life so much and missed out on living. I have so much mixed emotions about this, I didn't know how sad I was with the way I was living. I don't know if I'm good enough for any of the jobs that seem interesting to me, I may want to be an animator or artist, yet I don't know anything yet. I hope you are doing good, you should definitely choose any path that your heart wants.
I watched this again today, and I've had a copy of it since I was five, but now I'm 13 and this speaks to me.
AS SOMEONE WHOSE FAVORITE GHIBLI MOVIE IS THIS ONE, I APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!

Its my favorite too!
Same here!! 😊✨
I always like to think, that shizuku fullfilled her dreams and wrote kikis delivery service and cat returns :)
@@vrner.61 oh i love this way of seeing it
also Porco Rosso written on the clock
The Cat Returns is canonically a spinoff of Whisper of The Heart based on the story that Shizuku wrote. Even the protagonist in TCR was following a cat around until she found a "treasure", just like in how she found the shop in WotH. I like to think that Shizuku finally polished the story like Seiji's grandpa told her to and it got adapted into a movie
The comments on this comment section really shows how people are SO GLAD our favorite film is finally getting some attention
Stupidcow this is my joint first fave studio ghibli film! (tied with my neighbor totoro) because its so cute, inspiring and i could watch it so many times and never get bored of it. close behind being my fave is also howls moving castle
U couldn't have put this better
Miyazaki wrote the scenario and the complete storyboard of the movie. This is essentially his creation.
Another anime movie with no villain is Your Name.
For me the true ghibli masterpieces are:
Whisper of the heart
When Marnie was there
Only yesterday
Grave of the fireflies
Tale of princess Kaguya
Spirited away
Princess Mononoke
Howl's moving castle
Porco rosso
Edit: also Nausicaä of the valley of the wind, even though I still think the manga is even better.
I guess I'm weird but I don't just hype Miyazaki, I absolutely love both his and Takahata's works. And of course the only one Kondo made.
When Marnie was there broke me
Same
Nausicaa is also good tho👉👈
you definitely forgot a few.
W.s those are just their fav ones - they weren’t actually listing all the movies
Tale of princess Kaguya made me cry sooo much
It's sad that most people don't appreciate how good the anime film Whisper Of The Heart actually is and only use its pictures for overrated and terrible clickbaity Lofi Hip Hop videos.
Edit: This comment is not meant to hate on lofi. I apologize if anyone feels in that kind of way. I only meant to call out the clickbaiting videos. Everyone is free to post opinions and everyone can enjoy what they like. Peace.
Dimensional Traveler X The scene where she’s working in her room with headphones is crazy similar to the lofi hip hop girl
I was also thinking the same XD
@Fg 98 @anna i think that's because it was inspired by that. I think the owner of the lofi channel said it somewhere.
Actually in the beggining it was indeed the whipers of the heart background but i think it got a copyright problem, that s why he had to change it, asking and hire someone to make it, maintaining the " atmosphere "
some of the lofi playlists arent that bad
As someone who doesn't have a dream/is unsure about what they want to do, I connected with this movie on another level 😭
💯💯💯
Is it odd that my fav Gibli's film are Kiki, Whisper of the Heart and From Up on Poppy hill?
Those are my favorites as well heh along with nausicaa!
It's not odd because those are my favorites too.. 😊
I agree for Whisper and Kiki but why Poppy Hill ?

All your comment is EXACTLY the same for me. I subscribe.
same thoughts here
Couldn't have said it better!

Spirited away and Whisper of the heart are my fave Ghibli movies tbh
Same.
Ah i see your a man of culture as well. Whisper of the heart is my favorite movie ever!! I can’t even start to explain how much this movie means to me ❤️
Feels like teenager again. Loving every moment.
this is my favorite studio ghibli movie because of its simplicity and relatability of the story. i watched this when i was 25 years old and i ugly cry after i watched it because i already forgot the feeling of being young and enthusiastic in pursuing dreams. adulthood really drained the life out of me, but this movie gave me hope.
This is literally my favorite film of all time, I'm so glad that it's getting attention
Actually it's not about who has a writing dream who can relate in this movie, but also anyone who has a dream 😌 i really love this movie ❤️
The cineplex down the street played this last week, It was amazing ❤
Same for me! It was the first time I watched it and I was in love lol
I don't know why but this movie made me sad, even though ending is happy
I know right, it made me want more, like I know the ending but it felt incomplete not like in a bad way, but more realistic like idk how to explain it
@@andreespina9747 we were completely lost in story

This underrated gem will forever dwell on my top list amongst all Ghibli’s, I wish more people can appreciate it.
i watched it just a couple weeks ago w my mom too, im 20. honestly this inspired me since im in a huge depressive slump rn
This movie is top tier in my opinion.
very nice video
It reminds me of all the feels I had as a girl of 13, 14, 15.
This is a beautiful movie, with a bit of heart ache for the woman I have become.
This movie makes me want to go in the 90s and live a calm city life without techie distractions
I watched the movie for the first time today and I really loved it
It inspired me to go a path that doesn’t stress me out as much as my current one does
Just finished the movie and it is fantastic. What a movie, what a movie, it sucked me right in. Just beautiful with a lot of details. I didn't saw the film, i experience the film. Just beautiful 💞
From Up On Poppy Hill and Whisper Of The Heart are honestly my favourite Ghibli films
Just seen the film for the first time. Absolutely loved it.
Apart from the wonderful quality of the story, the Japanese version of 'Country Road' had me fall in love with this movie.
personally what makes this movie so great for me is that it literally is a "real" slice of life. or atleast that's how i'd call it. lots of animes these days that fall in this genre sure can be called a slice of life but most of the happenings on those are literally stuff that would rarely happen to someone irl and the only thing going for them is that they don't have supernatural things going on for them and that's how they probably came to be called "slice of life." i hope this makes sense lmao im not dissing anything here i love slice of lifes these days but i am merely pointing out why whisper of the heart for me is so distinct. it makes feel at home and gives me the familiar vibe and vision of a life i once called home. it made me feel as if i was in the movie like i was experiencing similar situations even though i hadn't. oh and can i just say the animation and just everything about it is👌
edit: tmi - i literally came across this masterpiece of a film listening to "i like me better" slowed down ver. on youtube and i happen to get curious about the gif in the background bcs it seemed like a movie or anime i'd love to watch so i did some reverse searching and oh boi was i not wrong about this movie at all
I completely agree yeah, and so many of the little scenes that are added build to that like greeting a neighbour or having a conversation with your parent about using a bag or even stumbling across a cool little place and then it just being a cool little time and not some huge huge adventure
@@hamoiq908 exactly this
I also watch this movie every August. I get inspiration from it before going back to school to teach in a new school year.
I saw the quote at the beginning and couldn't help but pause the video and think about it. wow.
As a writer and huge lover of this movie, you got yourself a subscriber. Thank you for the video
You put into words what I couldn't get a grasp on in my head. Amazing!
Its like she realizes that her writing (the lyrics) is nothing to be ashamed of, people apreciated it!
just seen it, AMAZING, i just feel happy watching
This movie is one of the best movies ever made I love it so much
For me all movies are masterpieces. They've all taught me something different and all made me feel something unique. I'm glad and grateful that my childhood had Ghibli. Awesome video! And best of luck for your writing future. Stay safe from corona!
This movie truly is a masterpiece. It literally never fails to inspire or motivate me to do something.
this film absolutely took my breath away, i love all the studio ghibli films but this one is just so pure and adorable in the way that it approaches adolescence and growing up. i love it forever, an honest treasure
The Cat Returns is what I expected Whisper of the Heart to be.
I'm rewatching Whisper of the Heart and it's easily one of Ghibli's bests movies.
For me, it’s not one of the best.
It’s THE best.
Thanks for vocalizing the feelings I've never been able to describe about this film for decades! :D
Bro the cat figure in this movie straight up looks like the baron from "The Cat Returns" check for your self
I just finished watching Whisper of the Heart, and your video has only intensified my admiration for this film! Thank you for making this!!! 💜💜
The best of the minor studio ghibli's films.❤️❤️
This is my favorite Ghibli movie!! I was so excited when I saw your video
This movie is a hidden gem!! I love it among other Ghibli films💗❤️💗❤️💗❤️💗
No matter how big or small your dreams are but it's yours so don't neglect them there might be time you are uncertain about them and might be anxious but don't give up what is yours humble beginning will lead you something big and beautiful you don't need to always figure things out and be happy for the sake of society sometimes you need believe in nature and let yourself to feel emotions
literally my favorite SG film ever
I just finish the movie and man 😭its so good and Motivated me
I actually much prefer their quiet movies like this, Only Yesterday, Kiki and Totoro.
When I watch this movie I feel emotions I don't understand and I cry haha
Same. Think I have a lot of unresolved issues from that period of my life and this movie brings it out.
Kudos for throwing in that Final Fantasy X song! It was such a pleasant surprise :3
Edit: I gotta say, it was nice to hear how perfectly a song from my favourite video game goes with my favourite ghibli movie. Thank you for that!
Recently started watching all the ghibli movies (only one I had seen prior to watching these was spirited away) and I just finished this one tonight and it was amazing to put it simply. I felt so many different emotions, and it was the perfect length. 9.8/10!
Why does this movie make me cry
Thank you for this amazing insight. This is my favourite Ghibli film too because im artist too
Great review, Joshua!
Thanks for making it!
this movie was so simple but true. wish i'd seen it when I was 14
I thoroughly enjoyed!
Such a masterpiece!! nice stroytelling, I really love the movie .
I saw this movie yesterday and it is such a wonderful movie. I looked for a video about it and your video is such a wonderful analysis.
