Your drawing is so beatiful. I've been looking for instructional videos that break down the color to use. Your video breaks it down step by step and tells you what color would look the best and what to do. Being that I've been messing around with colored pencil for years and never went to any art classes its good to see someone that drew for years show how to do it step by step. Thanks for the video!
Wow I'm so glad I was able to find your amazing videos. I love coloring but its something I don't do so often, since almost everything now days is computer colored I thought I should focused more on working with the computer and buy those expensive softwares. Now that I've seen this video I definitely restart using my buckets of unused color pencil, and put your tips to practice right away. Thank you so much for this instructional video.
I Loooove burnishing!!! and to think then when i was at school my teacher told me that that finish was burning my papers and it was not profesional :( ... but i kept doing it and everyone loved my portaraits, they are so vibrant with color! so i learned to go with what feels right for me :) thank you for your videos Pula!!! Gracias!!!
Just picked up my colored pencils to play with after many years... I forgot how soothing it is. Decided to watch some techniques since I know hardly anything about drawing; your a joy to listen and learn from, thank you :)
Paula I would NEVER NEVER have thought you would use solvent ...wow what a technique...can't wait to try it...thanks so much. You are a terrific instructor...will be back on line to discover more of your beautiful work!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Thank you so much for this video! It was so helpful in showing how to blend colors. Exactly what I needed. This was awesome stuff :) Your end result is GORGEOUS!

Wow what an awesome video! This is so beautiful and I learned so much information from you! I just wish you had more videos on your channel! Thank you!
This was very helpful! Colored pencils aren't my forte, but hopefully, I'll learn to love them through practice and application of the things I've learned in this video. Thank you so much!
This video is a wonderful guide! I have to say, I am a bit intimidated but I do think in time I'll do better :-) thank you for sharing your gift of art with me
Hi Paula, I was getting really frustrated with coloured pencil but this video is both soothing (your voice is lovely!) and incredibly helpful, thank you so much!!!xxxKaren
Thank you Paula, this is an excellent video b/c you've shown me how to blend in the colors seamlessly. Could you make another video involving coloring hair with color pencils and human poses especially coloring the human skin. Thank you in advance.
Paula, you are just amazing! I've played with Prisma color pencils and gamsol for years. I'd love to try your method, but I don't know how to buy the right shades of pencils in the color families, do you have any suggestions for me? I love your work.
I really enjoyed watching this video. It was really informative and has inspired me. I have just started using colour pencils - I seem to be better at doing black and white at the moment. So watching this has inspired me to try :-)
I watched your videos and especially enjoyed and am using the technique of (laying down) soft ovals for better coverage. I've got a long way to go- so i'll keep watching👍
you are awesome!!! I bet u r an art teacher. If not, you should be. Now this technique with the pencils, do you have to use certain brands or will any type of colored pencil work? I've never had art so am clueless but am trying to learn. Thank you for sharing this lovely video with us
hi, i love your videos and thank you a lot for sharing your art. i wanted your opinion about sudee stile colored pencil..i purchased it and i wanted a professionel supplies ..i dont know if i made the right choice ..have a nice day.
That is beautiful, i'm 15 and love art! This video really has helped me with using colours and new techniques! Thank you so much! Could I ask what coloring pencils your using?
I used prisma color in college and liked them but have found a beautiful artist grade pencil in LYRA Rembrandt pencils. Have you tried these polycolor pencils? They are beautiful from soft to intense depending on pressure and stroke. Dickblick is an awesome online art supply source. Thank you for the video. Very pretty.
Yes because I like my pencils to look like a beautiful oil painting when I am finished you want it well blended and all of the pours of the paper filled in or it just looks unfinished. Please check out all of the other DVD's with complete instructions and patterns on paula leopold's web site. Thanks and enjoy your colored pencils. Paula
Thank you so much, that taught me so much ! Does everything you buy (such as pencils and what not) have to be high quality, expensive brands? or can you buy reasonable quality utensils with a reasonable price? would it give you the same results?
Hi, this was a fantastic tutorial! I'm completing a color project for my scientific illustration class and I do have one question...I always end up seeing my original pencil sketch no matter how lightly I outline my drawing. How do you manage to not see this pencil outline? thanks!
Maybe you can find Prismas on Ebay. Also, try Caran'D'Ache Pablos...more expensive but they work well and Faber Castell Polychromos. They are slightly harder and the points are tougher. Faber Castel Albrecht Durers are watercolor pencils that handle very much like Prisma soft cores. Good luck!
great work and tips.could you tell me what paper do you use.i buy my polychromos open stock but not sure they are carrying all colour.cant afford to buy one large tin of 120.
All of the white stonehenge paper is eventually covered with pencil and soften with the solvent so that none of the white paper shows but only the richness of the green depicting the fullness of the garden. You can order the full 2 hour DVD from my web site. Thanks, Paula
Thank you for such a great video. I'm wondering about the background. When you used the Mona Lisa blending solution, did you have to be careful not to use it next to the flowers and leafs so that it didn't damage those colors, or what it not an issue?
The total DVD time is 2 hours. You can pause the DVD as you do the project so that you can pencil at your own pace. One of my favorite things about pencils is that they are so portable and easy clean-up that you can work a few minutes or loose yourself for a couple of hours working on a project. I am not sure how long I actually spent as it was truly a fun piece of art work to work on. Please check out my web site for order info Thanks, Paula
@weleopold hey plzz tell me , is there r any other brand of pencils colors which can be easily available in all countries ?? m.from india , & there is no market dat have prismacolors :( i don't hv much information abt which colors brand is best ... so i ask u coz i love ur videos:)
What paper do you enjoy most? I found you by your website via Goggle and subbed. You use Prismacolor, and I have 174 of them, so I am always happy to find the fine artist who has chosen them, as I have.
I use the individual sheets or Mi-Teintes paper that can be bought at art stores and some craft stores carry a few of the colors. Also I like Stonehenge papers. All of our DVDs list complete supplies, instructions, they include a line drawing and a photo. You might like to try one to improve your colored pencil skills. Thanks
I use the Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner that you can buy in an art store or where they sell art supplies. The quality that you buy in a paint or home improvement store is a different quality and even the odorless still has odor. Please check out the many other DVD with complete instructions and patterns on paula leopold's web site. Thanks and best to you in your penciling.
hi, if you don't mind answering my question, I've tried derwent pastel prncil color, I'm not to fond about how it feels when I stroke to paper feels a little bit rough, which type of prismacolor that have a soft feel when you stroke it to paper. I can't try the because they don't sell it in my country. have to order it online
i prefer the prismacolor premier pencils. they are the most popular for professional artists. The premier line has a very soft and large core, and it lays down color just perfectly. they aren't cheap (i think you can get a set of 48 (wouldn't start with less) for around $40.00 USD and that has a good selection of complimentary colors.
Yes I use mainly Prismacolor Premier Colored pencils. I also have another utube video on how to do a watermelon. On my web site I have many different DVD's with complete instructions and patterns from start to finish. You can go to my web site at paulaleopold. Thanks, Paula Leopold
Brandon, I am glad that you enjoyed the demo in the utube mini version of the full project "Peony and Roses" that you can buy from my web site. Also I just put another quick little demo of a watermelon on utube from a full DVD called "Summer Compliments". Thanks so much for you kind comments. Best to you in the art endeavors. Paula Leopold
1/18/2016After all the colored pencils are used do you blend with anything, other than pencils? And the other question is- does your paper have existing 'bumpy' sheet- or smooth? Hot or cold press paper? If Paula doesn't see this- any experienced Paula disciples out there that has the answers? thanks IBG
Thank you so much for the comment. Please check out my web site listed in the DVD. They are all truly step by step from beginning to end and anyone can learn beautiful pencil techniques. Also I have watercolor DVD's.
I do teach many classes per week plus travel teach. I use Prismacolor Colored pencils because of the rich oil mixture. Our web site is listed on the u-tube video. I would encourage you to try one of our complete step by step DVD's. Practice is the key to great success in art. Enjoy, Paula
Most of the time I frame my colored pencils under glass the same as you would watercolors. But occasionally I might want to attach the paper to a wooden/metal surface and then you do need to spray seal the project. The spray to use is Krylon Fixtavive #1306. All sprays are not created equal and some will actually melt the colors together. Hope this helps. Paula
Paula is an excellent instructor and she teaches several fun projects. Love this!

You are one of my favorite colored pencil artists. I love your techniques!!

Really like your instructional video. Wish I had time to watch all of it. Thanks for sharing.
This is the best video I've watched on colouring with pencils and I've learned such a lot. What a talented lady.
Eyebrows on fleek, Paula. Respect.
I really like the amount of detailed instruction. Many others do not include those details. She shows excellent teaching abilities.
Thanks again. I read a lot of books about colored pencils drawings, but video instructions like this one are the best to learn it.
this is exactly what i want to learn. thank you for being a wonderful virtual teacher!
Just picked up my colored pencils to play with after many years... I forgot how soothing it is. Decided to watch some techniques since I know hardly anything about drawing; your a joy to listen and learn from, thank you :)

You are so gifted! I even like your nail polish, is it a custom blend?
I would just use whatever products that are available to you there and do the best that you can with converting the colors. Thanks, Paula
I like that you hold your pencil. Holding it up right has made my hands so sore
You're so good! This videos help me so much! :)

Paula,
As a beginner to the world of art can you tell me what brand of colored pencils you recommend.
Good luck!

Super awesome video :* :*
Omg great tips and dose anyone know where I can get cheap but good pencils (colouring ones)
do you finish covering the solvent painted background with colored pencil or do you leave it?
Do you spray and with what?
Thank you your helpful hints. They help a lot.

Очень хорошая работа, жаль что нет перевода, хорошо что сама когда-то занималась акварелью, большое спасибо!
What sketch pad do you use? Do you use colorless blender pencils?
How do you get crisp lines like that? Any time I'm finished with a drawing, the lines seem to blend together.
are these pencils watercolour or not? The pictures are very good.
Hehe, my name is Paula too
I use the Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner that you can buy in an art store or where they sell art supplies.
