If you are new to coloured pencils then it is important to start with the right supplies, so that you set yourself up for success! Here is my FREE Coloured Pencil Supply Guide: bit.ly/2UvgOl1

You are an amazing artist and teacher! I started doing art late in life and I am not sure I will be a detail pencil person. I have a fetish for collecting pencils, but I am scared of them cause they will show how bad my technique and drawing skills are. I haven't done the work and I tend to like messy stuff acrylics. However, you give me hope that if I am patient and persistent my art will improve in ways cause watching you makes me melt into the details so that I can actually see them. Before it was just some strawberries and an impossible task, now I feel like if I take my time it may not look like a blob of color but a piece of fruit. You really do a great job! Loved the information on the pencils and tools!

Storytime: Today I was cleaning my room looking for some color pencils (Crayola twistable) so I went to this shoe box in my room where I put my color pencils i was getting some when I find this color pencil that had the word "PRISMACOLOR" in it so I was like "I bet it's a fake prismacolor" since I have never had prismacolors I found another one and decided to make a test so I swatched it and it was so pigmented so i was like "Omg is this actually a prismacolor?" So I kept looking for more and found 18 in total turns out they were my sister's but she moved out of the house so I kept them and I'm only missing 6 since she had 24
Loved all the tips and tricks! Just gonna add a quick one as well in terms of archival (this goes with any media). Now keep in mind I don't sell my artwork, but I do this method to preserve it for my own sake. Whenever I finish a drawing, I personally do a spray coating overtop of it FOR A FEW REASONS: * preserves the vibrancy of the colors * prevents the paper from yellowing overtime * especially useful for when you're working with graphite: I find that no matter how much you brush off your finished piece, it will smudge in your sketchbook against the opposite side of the paper. Coating it will keep the graphite in place. * sometimes a specific coating (like high-gloss) can really bring out the colors in some drawings. Found this to be the case with watercolors. Now there are a few options in terms of coating, and you kind of just have to play around with it to find out what works with you and your media. Some ones I've used in the past: **Workable fixative** great all-purpose and forgiving coating for dry-media. I use this mostly for my sketchbooks. It prevents yellowing, smudging and wrinkling without adding a noticeable "finish". It's also one of the only coatings you can actual remove (with like, an eraser) * matte finish is nice sometimes for graphite, because graphite just by itself is quite reflective. It kind of helps with the viewing angles of the drawing * kamar varnish - useful for "wet" media like watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc * clear coat, semi-clear, acrylic clear, and alike are all useful for boosting the saturation and depth of your colors (think of a glossy professional photo vs matte). I REALLY don't use it often to be completely honest, but I do use it at times for specific media.
Wow you just showed me 10x more techniques and methods in a far more intuitive way than I have learned in 2 semesters of art classes. Why have I literally never heard of solvent until now, that's so useful. Thank you
Thank you!! This is such an incredibly helpful tutorial!! ❤ thank you for sharing this free on your RUclips. We're a homeschooling family and we love to do art. So far, no color pencils since they don't look as nicely as the paintings... but now you convinced me to get a solvent, white pencils and an exacto knife!! Looks like we're going to be learning how to properly color with color pencils!!
OMG I REALLY NEEDED THIS VIDEO I’ve just started finally using my colored pencils I started off doing a cartoony drawing but I wanna get to realism and I just needed this
This is the most informational video ever!! I’m a third semester Art Student and we didn’t get this run down before. I appreciate you, especially for linking the products. I love your work! I’d love to have a piece of yours in my art room ❤❤❤
Some years ago I got the 36 pack of polychromos without doing any research. Now, I found what I actually like to draw and that is mostly portraits. I am going to get prismacolors but right now There are some more serious things going on in the World. I want them for the smooth blending but while I was watching this video I realized that I was making some mistake when using solvent. Thank you for all the videos you make I really enjoy them and I also learn a lot from them.
I'm an artist and always have been but I have never been able to figure this out. I watched this 3 years ago and because of you my career has skyrocketed and now I'm amazing with colored pencils you might not read this but...thank you for everything you do 🙂
Kristy, you got 666 views and 30 comments in only 10 minutes! I hope this shows you how much your videos are appreciated! Keep up the great work for us! Thanks!
I can’t tell you how incredible you are as a teacher! You really have what it takes to teach people! I honestly don’t say this lightly either! I mean by that, I don’t tell just “anybody“ that! 😊 I’ve honestly learnt SO much from just this video alone, and I thought I knew “it all!” 😅 So a MASSIVE Thankyou Kirsty! ❤
I usually use acrylics for my assignments but i thought the reference i chose will go better with pencil colors and so it brings me here(but i actually own zero pencil colors)and after watching this video i feel like going right now to the stationary store and get alot of pencil colors and start right away!!Thanks for so much of inspiration.
Finely someone who explains everything step by step. I love how you say what you use and how you explain everything so well. IV been looking for someone like this for so long. This video was amazing
I am a musician and accountant but not an artist. I have loved sketching since I was 6 years old and now 67 and working, need a relaxing hobby. I long to pick up my long ignored love for sketching. Thank you for this video.
Kirsty: “You don’t need loads of colored pencils to begin with” me with a 40 pack of Prismacolors I hardly touched and regret buying more every day: oh..
And here was me thinking all I needed was blank paper from B&M and some crayola pencils 😂 Edit: OMG thx for the likes, I've never had this many before!
But that really is all you need. You can draw with just a sharp rock on a smooth rock when it comes down to it (we did in fact do this tens of thousands of years ago when we were just cavemen). Technique and creativity will always be the most important thing for an artist to have.
I use Crayola Pencils and their Crayons. (I love the feel of crayons on the paper.) I only draw simple things. (I am not even close to Kirsty.) But I get really nice results for the coloring part with Crayola. I also just bought some "Cezanne" 120. We'll see! All you really do need is some paper and Crayola.
My dear......it's MUCH more complex than that!! I think we should go back to the days of wax crayons and that awful nasty rough 'children's' colouring paper!! Things were much easier then.....😊😊
Wow. What a nice surprise to find a color pencil RUclipsr that ACTUALLY does artwork with their pencils. Almost everyone else I’ve found on here just waste their pencils doing page after page of swatches and blended rainbow gradients. It’s the same with watercolor enthusiasts on RUclips as well. Just people offering artistic advice who simply just don’t know how to paint themselves. Beautiful work, and very informative video. Thank you.
I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of your tutorial. I have learned so many of your “secrets “. I’m definitely going to benefit from my next two projects: one of lilacs in my garden and the second of the roses that are really starting to get going as the weather warms. Thank you so much !
Yes, but she put a lot of dedication into improving her art to hecome this good. Yes, some ppl are a little bit better than others naturally, but everyone can learn😁😁
I am such a newbie I had never knew about the blending brush. Makes a HUGE difference. I would LOVE to be able to paint realism. Maybe one day… learning a lot from your videos. Thanks and nice job!
“Become the artist you want to be” Meanwhile My mom: “Stop Drawing Stupid Peoples faces Your never going to make money when you grow up doing that trash” Me: *Cries On paper while drawing a car* Edit: uh oh, she liked this comment, It’s not a bad thing, but uh.....w o w.Never thought this was going to happen but thanks for everything! Also, I don’t plan on using mainly art and selling it like most people would usually think. I was focusing on becoming a architect when I get older, if this doesn’t fit anything I’ve read in the replies, sorry. I’m still young to be able to understand most of this, heh! But overall, thank you for you’re support and advice if Any of had given any. Have a beautiful day.
Parents aren’t always right, you can definitely make a living from art if you work hard and learn about how to grow an art business. These times are very different compared to when your parents were younger, when it was harder to make a living as an artist. But time’s have changed and there is so much opportunity out there to create a living from your passion nowadays. Your parents probably just don’t understand and maybe if you learn about how you could make money you could educate and persuade them. I actually made a recent video on 15 ways to make money from art 🥰
Kirsty is spot on there, as her mum I was very dubious at first when she told her dad and myself that she wanted to make a living out of art, I thought how is she going to manage that!! She did work to help fund her art channel at first until she became self sufficient and could start to make a good living from art. She certainly proved me wrong, and I have told her this. Her dad and I are incredibly proud of her and everything that she has achieved, she has worked extremely hard over the last 5 years. Never give up on your dreams and hopefully one day your mom might change her opinions, good luck 👍😊
It's so fucking true of our world and our lives!) Not everybody can make money with this profession. Maybe your parents are normal and they wish you a good life with normal MONEY !))
Thank you. I normally work with ink but I got a 300 set of color pencils for Christmas 😂. This has been an amazing watch and you have an amazing talent. Thanks again 👍
I seriously cannot thank you enough! I have learned so much from your videos!! Thank you for sharing your secrets. Sometimes I feel like these things are "ancient Chinese secrets" and professional artists all have a club with a secret handshake and the main rule is to never divulge the truth to the methods that made their work so amazing! All the practicing in the world would never get these results without some of these methods so I am really grateful you have broken free of the code of honor and are rebelling by telling us how to get the most out of our work...along with practice of course!
I got some 13 dollar ones off of walmart and i've tried using them once and they felt like holding a magic wand. Then again, maybe it's because i've been using crayola my entire life.
Literally the best teaching video ever, I am an artist and went through so many videos but didn't find a video that gives you so so many tips in one shot.. you are amazing in explaining, very clear and organised in your transitions...I will definitely sign for your website tutorials 😊 thank you so much for the rich information you provided us with.
I found using an embossing stylus much easier than an Exacto blade to create creases in the page. They come in different sizes and are perfect for signing your name in the corner of the paper before you start drawing. "Longdex Embossing Stylus Set 5PCS" I loved the video!
I wish I could show you the pictures I just took of my extremely SHARP & POINTY Polychromos, Luminance, and Prismacolor pencils I sharpened with my new Derwent Super Point hand-crank pencil sharpener. Thank you so much, Kirsty, for recommending this sharpener. I have about ten other sharpeners I bought after learning about them on various artists' websites. NONE of them can make my pencils as sharp as Derwent's Super Point hand-crank sharpener. I am eager to sharpen all of my pencils with this. The stop mechanism works VERY well. Oh, and I really enjoyed this instructive video! I just purchased your Legacy Art Class Collection and can't wait to get started. Your teaching style fits well with my learning style. Keep up the good work, Kirsty. Thank you!
I have been seriously waiting for this for forever. I’m good at drawing but I want to start realism people in colored pencil. I want to get better so I’ve been binge watching all ur colored pencil vids 😂
4:35 and 6:30 ! 2 of my favs. Just started my first attempt at a multi colored full portrait. Usually just use a single color ( black, grey, red, ballpoint) it’s definitely very time consuming constantly switching between 10-20 colors. Thanks for the advice on solvent and watercolor paper and the x acto knife technique. Never even considered this. 👏👍👌this was honestly thee most informative videos I’ve ever seen on utube. Thank you. I guarantee this will be beyond helpful in my work. Ok
Her work is amazing. Like damn. Beautiful! Definitely a truly skilled artist. It's amazing how far something as cheap and simple as color pencils can go when in the right hands
I have a 72-color Prismacolor set and a 120-color Polychromos set, plus 36-color packs from other brands. I can never have too many pencils. I love seeing the color form on the paper!!!
Wonderful tutorial! I've been drawing portraits in b&w for a while with decent results, but I thought adding color would take them to a whole different level. Your instructional video gave me what I need to get started exploring this new layer of experience, pun intended!
You have made into so much a better artist. I can’t wait to watch this one and to support you on patreon when the pandemic passes over and I’m more economically stable. I love you so much. Stay safe! Keep up the amazing work :)
Why genius people like you having 1.3 million subcriber.... It's not okay! You have to number 1 on RUclips your videos totally amazing, I'm not artist and I don't know how to drawing correctly but I really love it all your videos easy to understanding. I hope everyone appreciate it your best efforts.
Your Creative Push thank you for the offer 🥰 Unfortunately, I am very busy at the moment and can barely keep up with the work tasks I have to do now that I’m pregnant 😂
It's clear from the video of your art and the details you go through when explaining everything that you love your passion, and I felt that. From that alone you get a like and with that soothing voice, i dont get why you dont have many more followers
I rediscovered coloring a year ago and was digging through all the videos I could find. Why didn’t I find this one? There are so many useful tips I still didn’t even hear of. Amazing 😻 although I like to color coloring books and I only started to try and paint myself with my watercolor paints 😊 Thank you so much for this well organized and well explained video ❤
Just getting into colored pencils myself. I love your channel. I dream of one day being half as good. Thank you so much for creating such high quality content.
Thank you Kirsty for sharing SO MUCH helpful information and amazingly fun and helpful techniques!!! I learned so much in such a short amount of time. Thank you for sharing your love of art with so many of us...even with those that leave comments showing they don't take it seriously enough, you deserve more respect. Thank you for your kindness and time.
Hi, I would like to say your the best artist on RUclips and the most helpful one too. out of respect I watch the ads in the video because you are amazing and are giving amazing tips that are really helpful. It’s like a free masterclass. Not only that but you have amazing art it is on believable. On top of that I’ve been waiting for this video for awhile because I am currently working on improving my coloured pencil techniques. I Wasn’t waiting I was just looking for a video similar to this and this is perfect. Great job!😁
Kirsty, thank you sooo much! What an eye opener! I didn’t know about the pencil blending solution until now and I had absolutely no idea that you could make portraits with pencils. But not just an ordinary portrait, but very realistic ones like yours. I thought I was looking at photos!! I’m so glad I came across your channel today. Brilliant!! Thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏
This has been a really informative video. I'm just recently getting back into drawing, and the techniques you show (especially with white pencil and knife highlights) inspire me to add those techniques to my future color pencil works. Thank you so much for this guide.
Attempt #5, I was able to shade my sketch and reached stage 27:24. To continue, I'll need to find that fine pointed eraser and the solvent. You're talent is absolutely amazing Kirsty. You made this video look so easy breezy but it needs a vast skillset which is acquired over thousands of hours of practice. :)
Was just smacked up side the head with the pitfall of being a primarily self-taught artist and am wavering between mortification that I've accepted the title of artist for more than a few decades and the heady wonderment of learning the truth behind life-changing mysteries. In the first minutes of this video I learned the most important benefit of several materials and tools I've been using for a long, long time. Weird feeling, but heck of a boost to inspiration, which is always a blessing as is knowledge! Thank you!
You should have seen the childlike wonder in my eyes as you used the solvent on the strawberry LOL. Wow this helps so much!! Thank you so much. What a talented artist with exceptional techniques to match

Loved all the tips and tricks! Just gonna add a quick one as well in terms of archival (this goes with any media). Now keep in mind I don't sell my artwork, but I do this method to preserve it for my own sake.
Whenever I finish a drawing, I personally do a spray coating overtop of it FOR A FEW REASONS:
* preserves the vibrancy of the colors
* prevents the paper from yellowing overtime
* especially useful for when you're working with graphite: I find that no matter how much you brush off your finished piece, it will smudge in your sketchbook against the opposite side of the paper. Coating it will keep the graphite in place.
* sometimes a specific coating (like high-gloss) can really bring out the colors in some drawings. Found this to be the case with watercolors.
Now there are a few options in terms of coating, and you kind of just have to play around with it to find out what works with you and your media. Some ones I've used in the past:
**Workable fixative** great all-purpose and forgiving coating for dry-media. I use this mostly for my sketchbooks. It prevents yellowing, smudging and wrinkling without adding a noticeable "finish". It's also one of the only coatings you can actual remove (with like, an eraser)
* matte finish is nice sometimes for graphite, because graphite just by itself is quite reflective. It kind of helps with the viewing angles of the drawing
* kamar varnish - useful for "wet" media like watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc
* clear coat, semi-clear, acrylic clear, and alike are all useful for boosting the saturation and depth of your colors (think of a glossy professional photo vs matte). I REALLY don't use it often to be completely honest, but I do use it at times for specific media.
Wow you just showed me 10x more techniques and methods in a far more intuitive way than I have learned in 2 semesters of art classes. Why have I literally never heard of solvent until now, that's so useful. Thank you
This is the first art video I don't regret watching.
So THAT's how people draw fine lines. Holy Guacamole-- thank you for the tips!

OMG I REALLY NEEDED THIS VIDEO
I’ve just started finally using my colored pencils I started off doing a cartoony drawing but I wanna get to realism and I just needed this
Conflicted _contortionist yay 😁 I hope the video helps you! It’s packed with info so hopefully you will learn something 💕
@@KirstyPartridgeArt is they any cheap good pencils that are realistic
Yes i am doing the same as you!!!
Thank you for all the videos you make I really enjoy them and I also learn a lot from them.
polychromos will do just fine, some artists even quit prisma to go with polychromos for portraits ;)

Thanks!
I'm an art youtuber myself and I didn't know the tricks so thank you for that and I just found another army that is.....YOU KRISTY!!😍❤️✨
I can’t tell you how incredible you are as a teacher! You really have what it takes to teach people! I honestly don’t say this lightly either! I mean by that, I don’t tell just “anybody“ that! 😊 I’ve honestly learnt SO much from just this video alone, and I thought I knew “it all!” 😅
So a MASSIVE Thankyou Kirsty!
They didn't teach me any of this on my year-long art course all those years ago.
Thank you so much for opening our eyes to this stuff.
Finely someone who explains everything step by step. I love how you say what you use and how you explain everything so well.
IV been looking for someone like this for so long. This video was amazing
The demonstration of the use of solvent was a real eye-opener for me and has made such a difference to my artwork. Amazing! Thank you.
7:15 i didn’t expect to see jimin here
I thought that too haha!!
I am a musician and accountant but not an artist. I have loved sketching since I was 6 years old and now 67 and working, need a relaxing hobby. I long to pick up my long ignored love for sketching. Thank you for this video.

And here was me thinking all I needed was blank paper from B&M and some crayola pencils 😂
Edit: OMG thx for the likes, I've never had this many before!
You can get started with anything 🥰
Things were much easier then.....😊😊
Its Good with www.artsgoya.com
How to use a colored pencil:
Step 1: literally be amazing at drawing
That is true
Yes, but she put a lot of dedication into improving her art to hecome this good. Yes, some ppl are a little bit better than others naturally, but everyone can learn😁😁
Not true
No shame in coloring books
I am such a newbie I had never knew about the blending brush. Makes a HUGE difference. I would LOVE to be able to paint realism. Maybe one day… learning a lot from your videos. Thanks and nice job!

Edit: uh oh, she liked this comment, It’s not a bad thing, but uh.....w o w.Never thought this was going to happen but thanks for everything!
Don't give up.
Hey random stranger, same here
Her:get the good color pencils

try getting Fabre castell classics, theure good for the price and better than crayolas

I just have some random colouring pencils and she’s talking about all these different brands Idk about 😭😭😭
This is the best art tutorial I have seen for any art medium.
Ok
You are an amazing teacher! You went through the guide + tips so nicely but also included a demo. Thanks so much!

Been a month since I've been surfing through lot of color pencil tutorials .. this was the best by far

Thank you!
