HOKA Speedgoat 5 Hiking Review: Good News Bad News

I test the HOKA Speedgoat 5 on a multiday hike for COMFORT, STABILITY, TRACTION, PROTECTION, and TIME-TO-DRY. They performed very well on various hiking terrains. They are especially while downhilling. They lack a built-in stability feature. Off-camber I found them to be less than stable but over the 85-mile hike I had no major issues. Do they have something very breathable in their product range? looking for a summer shoe for hiking when I know it won't rain and I hate getting hot feet. There are unfortunately not many with a mesh like design

    The huge problem with the TERREX and I have 3 pairs is that the sizing is absolutely ridiculous, I wear 45 and need 47-48 for TERREX, the toe box is small , why can't they just get it right, although i likex the design i stoped buying them. SALEWA are amazing , they have their base in Dolomiten mountains , traction is amazing, they are a bit more technical with a mountain character for off trail, they do have a thinner more athletic shape, Columbia has started producing seriously comfortable shoes and hard working have a couple of pairs since years and they really really hold up. Merrel unfortunately whenever i bought them they didn't hold up after a year or so, their quality was low

    I've used Altra Lone Peaks for 5 years. Comfort, wide toe box ok but now I want to try the Vibram sole for better traction and durability.. My choice : Hoka Speedgoat 5 . Hiking the 600 km distance GR5 trail accross the French Alps, from Geneva lake to French Riviera. We"ll see...

    i like merrell because they put hiking sole in their sneaker line. this fits my life style very well. i probably will never buy a single pair of hiking shoes from merrell but i'd definitely come back for their all terrain sneakers every two or three years. i wish more brands would adopt this idea.

    I had a pair of brooks cascadia 5 years ago but used them while bike touring where I had to do a lot of pushing. Been a fan of hokas bc of comfort but not much availability in wide width. Just bought some altra lone peak, wide toe box and rugged sole seem to be working well for hiking.

    I loved this shoe until I went on a through hike. It held up well and for a hike of a few weeks no issue. However there is not enough padding and a daily twenty mile hikes over several weeks will wreck your feet. Do I still buy this shoe? Yes for around the house, day and weekend hikes. For long distance hiking or backpacking I love my Hokas.

      Score! I'm not sure most ppl realize, if you bottom-fish for open box, closeouts, overstocks, etc. you can get almost-free shoes like that. And it's much more of an adventure than deciding what you want and then paying whatever they're asking.

    I have a pair in my closet right now, and they are the third pair I've had. I have found that Merrell fit my feet the say no other shoe I've tried. For the first time though, the sole started to separate from the uppers. An application of Shoe Goo fixed the problem, but it is unfortunate. Still, I love them.

    Lone Peaks are not minimalist. I have no problem stepping on sharp rocks in them. Also "ankle support" is totally overrated. Your ankles should naturally be flexible and strong. The downside of Altras is just that they fall apart too easily.

    Man, I love my Topo Athletic Runventure 4s. Zero drop, minimal stack height, no rock plate, wide toe box. I can feel the ground I am stepping on and never roll an ankle anymore. All other shoes I've tried, rolled. Too bad they are being discontinued.

    I wear mine at work standing most of the day on concrete floors Order a half size larger as Merrells run small plus I add Spenco Ground Control High Arch Insole on top of the Merrell insole. I wear double socks with Merrell's. More cushion on impact with all sorts of tasks.

  • @ericscottstevens
    @ericscottstevens 20 дней назад

    I use Merrell Moabs at work standing on concrete floors all day with added Spenco ground control high arch insoles, it proves to be an unbeatable combination. My Moabs are also for hiking as the same pair can endure work and play without a hitch. Yet at one time I swore by Nike ACG Mountain shoes were the best for me. But once they started falling apart prematurely with the soles coming off due to poor glue I was finished purchasing them for good.

    I love mine but despite claims (and merino wool socks) I find these not very breathable, so much so in summer they are actually unbearable. Perfect for winter hikes but I don't even live in a hot part of the world and it's too much.

    • @ericscottstevens
      @ericscottstevens 20 дней назад

      I agree it they can get hot. Yet I suppose they are layered and you get shoe for your money. I also am using double gold toe quarter socks for more cushion, so that may be part of the issue too. Don't know about you but I wear a size 10.5 and order 11 as Merrell sizing runs smallish.
