  • I review the Adidas Terrex Swift R3 after one year of use and abuse. The shoes won the categories for traction and protection this year performing very well all around.

Still the best pair of hiking shoes, I have ever worn, I hike in the northeast, white mountains of New Hampshire, known for being aggressively rugged. I swear these shoes were made for the northeast haha that rugged sole is phenomenal for the terrain out here. I will also say, you are right about the shoe being better if the outsole wasn’t as rigid but Adidas makes other hiking shoes that fit that bill.

just bought these, these are my first pair of hiking my shoes. first impression: super stuff when i was trying them on but i’m hoping they loosen up a bit. i appreciate you take in stability as i do need stability more than anything as i have loose ankles, hopefully these work out for me.

To understand the Swift R3 and the "Swift" in the name Here the Story.
First the adidas SuperTrekking of 1978 where Swift Trekking Boots with weather sealing compared to e.g. Trekking Boots by Meindl with leather lining and weather sealing (As the SuperTrekking where so successful in the Market at the end of 70s and early 80s Meindl Invented the First Gore-Tex Trekking Boots without waether sealing but Gore-Tex Bootie and lighter synthetic lining). Adi Dassler Founder of Adidas developed the SuperTrekking for Reinhold Messner for His successful Mt. Everest Expedition in 1978. The SuperTrekking was requested by Reinhold Messner as a Swift Trekking Boot for the Trek Up to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest (> 5.000 Meters above sealevel).
The newer adidas SuperTrekking ForMotion/FM of ~MY2010 was more talented as the SuperTrekking of 1978 while Not really "Swift".
The ForMotion element at the heel was also introduced in a adapted Format to
    - adidas TERREX Fast R and S, while the Swift R and AX2, AX2R and the Brushwood Gen1 had a lighter Variant of a Rocker Heel.
La Sportiva Used the lighter Variant as Proof-of-Concept for the Heel-Rocker solution of it's Aequillibrium Series.
The Swift R3 should been more protective than the adidas TERREX Fast R (>MY 2013) and as Mid-Cut Model offering a ankle Support Like the SuperTrekking of ~MY2010.
So the Low-Cut Swift R3 is Not the Low-Cut Version of a Alpine Boot Like the Makra Low by Hanwag. The Low-Cut is a Trekking-Shoe while the adidas TERREX Swift R3 Mid is a "Swift" Trekking-Boot.
The "Swift" Character shines at the 2nd Part of A full Hiking day. The bright Shine gets more intensive with the Last hours and kilometers/Miles to the end of a Hiking day.
Usually Low-Cut Variants loose their Level compared to the Boot/Mid-Cut Model. The Swift R3 stays Being a good Platform for Trekking.
You may compare the Swift R3 with the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II and the La Sportiva Akyra.
But use protective insoles in the Akyra as the midsole below the midfoot/"Plantar Fascia" is too thin for my taste and Not good enough for 100% protection. I do recommend "Icebug Slim" as insoles. The "Superfeet Carbon" is too flat, while offering No stable Platform at the heel, while Other Superfeet insoles do rise Up the heel too much.
    Going Back to the Shoes.
Pionier was Adi Dassler/adidas. We do have Gore-Tex Shoes since decades noe thanks to Gore-Tex and Meindl but this step was triggered by Adi Dassler and Reinhold Messner in 1978. The complete story goes Back to the Training Boots for Emil Zatopek Made by Adi Dassler/adidas.
Sustainable Innovations by a real shoemaker....

The soles are very rigid. I would go with something that has a better midsole and softer outsole. I love the Brooks Cascadia. You could also try the Hoka Speedgoats. Good luck.

Will these work for casual wearing on concrete in wet conditions

    • @Dusty_Hikers
      @Dusty_Hikers  Год назад +2

I tested them last summer for grip on polished concrete and they performed worse than other shoes with softer compounds. They are not very cushioned in the midsole compared to other hiking shoes. I would go for something with Vibram megagrip compound in the outsole for wet concrete. Megagrip is very grippy.

Too bad. There is a balancing act between getting your feet ready for hiking and finding a shoe that does not require to spend tons of miles adapting to the shoe. If you are getting lots of blisters then maybe these shoes do not work for you.
