  • It's hiking armor! It's a traction monster! It's the MOST powerful hiking shoe in the universe! I test the Adidas Terrex Swift R3 to find out if my theory is correct that despite the shoe's superior performance across many categories that it does have one fundamental weakness. This one weakness is like kryptonite for a shoe that is otherwise super strong.

Excellent review! I've been asking around about shoes that have the best traction on cobblestone and limestone tile, the kind they pave their walking paths with in Europe. Your slip test really illustrated that lugs won't work on smooth surfaces, especially when it's wet. The Vibrum seems to offer the best traction on smooth surfaces. But would a flatter continental rubber outsole without lugs offer a better grip? How about PumaGrip? It's said to outdo any other outsole in the market.
I'm looking to buy the Adistar 2.0 with its flat continental outsole. Would it have good traction on the smooth surface you tested?

I think the most interesting feature of any footwear is its weight to durability ratio, and what you pay for said ratio. Thats why I like this barefoot trend (zero drop, less stack height and less arch support) and am probably going to try leather "barefoot" hiking boots

Pretty comfy and durable so far. They do squeak a bit, but beside that no complains lace system could be better but no need to tighten it. Cool enough for sumner. Great for manual transmission driving

There are two Megagrip-Versions with diverse Performance on dry and wet Rocks.
Trailrunners Like Hoka always have the softer Megagrip with better Performance on dry and wet Rocks, while the Durability is less good.
If a non-approach shoe Like some Boots from Asolo do have Megagrip or Like the 5.11 (nothing to do with adidas FiveTen/5.10) boot this is the less soft Megagrip with less good Performance on dry and wet Rocks, while it is more durable.
We even have now Vibram XS Trek, slippery like hell vs. XS Trek EVO with more than acceptable Performance on dry and wet Rocks.
The Continental Rubber Outsole of the adidas Swift R3 is one of the Most rigid ones. Reason is that the Mid-Cut Modell should be the much lighter follower of the adidas Super Trekking ForMotion. I do have these Boots. They do have a adidas Traxxion Outsole. I do See some Cuts in the Rubber I prefer Not to See. The Swift R3 Outsole won't Show those Cuts while the Performance on dry or wet Rocks is much better compared to Vibram XS Trek, the Traxxion Outsole of my adidas SuperTrekking ForMotion and Salomon Contragrip MD.
Salomon Contragrip MD one of the Most durable has a really week Performance on dry and wet Rocks.
The better Salomon Contragrip Starts with TD. Contragrip Like TA or MA is Always much, much more better than MD on dry and wet rocks.
If you do Not scramble on hot Rock surfaces adidas FiveTen/5.10 Rubber is the best. On hot Rocks 5.10 Starts to smear, while Vibram Idogrip does Not smear on hot Rocks.
Continental Rubber for Trailrunners and earlier Models of the adidas Fast Series is as good as softer Versions of Megagrip and La Sportiva FriXion White.
Back to the Swift R3. To be worn with Socks like Falke TK2. Same with the Swift R2, while the AX3 is more comfortable and can be worn with thinner Socks.
The real Killer of adidas regarding grip even on ice and Durability is the Skychaser Gen1.
At the Canyoning Boot adidas Hydrolace the FiveTen/5.10 Stealth Rubber Outsole is even 3-times backed sinterred Rubber. This improves Grip on wet Rocks and durability.

Terrex is a line for both hiking and trail running. Some Terrex use a huge boost foam, which I hate for technical trails - it totally takes away my sense for loose rocks. This one doesn’t have that boost foam.

Comfort, stability and traction. What about durability?

  • @sdemosi
    @sdemosi 11 месяцев назад +1

Can't disagree with anything you say. Other continental soles are less durable than the R3, which seems designed for soil, scree and other terrain that's rough or loose.
But the R3 sole unit is below average on the smooth or the wet. Depending on where you live it could be a deal breaker.

Point is that Not only Lowa is very successful with Vibram XS Trek, which is less good on dry and wet Rocks compared to the adidas Swift R3.
Compared to Salomon Contragrip MD with Chevron lugs the rigid Rubber of the Swift R3 does not Slip and Stop it slows you down on dry and wet Rocks.
In Slowenia in the Julian Alps the alpine Gravel is extremely aggressive. You even loose with Vibram XS Trek, you need Vibram Mont, which has less Grip on dry and wet Rocks than the adidas Swift R3. Regarding Durability while moving thru alpine Gravel in The Julian Alps the adidas Swift R3 is the nearest to Vibram Mont.
Forget about Vibram Megagrip in the Julian Alps.

@@espacesX I find Vibram XS to be better than the continental soles on the R3 on wet rock. I agree there's a tradeoff here. I have some Vibram Mont soled Scarpa's which I wear on rocky mountains in summer. They're durable and reliable. They're not the right pick for wet hikes around Ireland and Scotland in early Autumn or late Spring. Try hiking around the Burren in Clare in Salomon's or R3s, or Scarpa Zodiacs for that matter. It's nothing but wet limestone rock and those soles are too slippery. I'd pick the Salomon Ultras last however as they're lethally slippy. There's even a video a friend made about his terrible experience with Salomon Contagrip on such a wet rocky terrain.

    • @espacesX
      @espacesX 11 месяцев назад

@@sdemosi There is now Vibram XS Trek EVO on the Market, See e.g. Topo Athletics.
Nothing to do with the old Vibram XS Trek which is "dangerouse to life" on wet Rocks.
I do Not know any adidas shoe which is as weak as all shoes with Vibram XS Trek.
Not less or more comfortable the Swift R2 has the softer Continental Rubber with better Performance on dry and wet Rocks. The midfoot get a good Protection in the R2 while Not on the Same high Level Like the R3.
All Salomon Shoes for longer distance do have Contragrip MD. Slippery like hell nearly as Bad as Vibram XS Trek.
The Salomon X Ultra has Contragrip TD ever since Like the Quest/Quest 4D. The XA Pro 3D Contragrip MA ever since. The light S.Lab Alpine has Contragrip TA, while some shoes with waterdrainage do have Contragrip SA. All Salomon Contragrip are okay except Contragrip MD.
Reebok Like Nike do have Models with Vibram Megagrip now.
Asicsgrip.and Pumagrip are often as good as Vibram Megagrip.

Looks like a speedgoat 5? I have hiked in R3s and Speedgoat 5 miss. You could take a speedgoat hiking on wet rock. You would be mad to do that in R3s or Salomon's. The vibram mega grip soles wear out faster but they're much less slippery in the wet.

    adidas used never
    - blown Rubber
    - non-sintered Rubber like e.g. Vibram XS Trek
adidas, Five.Ten/5.10 and Continental use Silicon as bonding agent.
Let's compare Vibram Mont today with Bonding agent Silicon vs. Vibram Mont in the ages of Bonding agent "Carbon black"/"Soot"/"Ash".
Rubber with Silicon as bonding agent is softer offers better adaptable Grip.
Salomon has Gel-like-compound at Contragrip with the "A" (e.g. MA), while TD is a Hybrid Like FriXion Red by La Sportiva.
All Contragrip except MD gets cut Out.
The Outsole of my adidas Skychaser Gen1 does Not get cutvout even offers some Grip on Ice.
I do see some aging-related whiting on the black/dark Rubber of Skychaser Gen1. This is typical at sinterred baked Rubber.
At the adidas Swift R3 it could be If you compare them in a Garage or near your Home Workshop with agents and chemicals in your Garage or Home workshop compared to Vibram Megagrip the "Vibram Megagrip Pro"-factor Rules the grip-competition.
Vibram Megagrip Pro has all ingredients in Common with both Megagrip-Versions for Outdoors but the one which prevents whiting-like (non aging-related whiting) reactions with agents and chemicals is higher in concentration.
Continental does need only some abrasion it does get on streets and fireroads/gravelroads as motor-vehicle tyre.
Sinterred Rubber gets Patina, while it does Not need protectors, just some sandpaper to get away the Patina.
Vibram XS Trek I would rate as extruded Rubber Material. Means you Cut junks from the thick role of extruded Rubber Mass and then put it in a hot mould.
Mass Produced Outsole Units even complete incl. the midsole for the masses.
adidas, Five.Ten/5.10 and Continental are Banking sinterred Rubber.
adidas-Traxxion, adidas/5.10 and adidas-Continental all are high Quality sinterred baked Rubber.
The Rubber of the Swift R3 Outsole Just needs some Treatment with sandpaper If the Rubber was in contact with agents or chemicals typical for Home use i.e. areas where you wear shoes with "Megagrip Pro"-outsoles. Working Boots for Pros.
Strange thing. The Agents- and chemicals-protected Megagrip is prone to cowpats, which sinterred Rubber is Not.
Vibram Mont is 100% sinterred Rubber.
Mountaineering incl. Cowpads with Vibram Mont and any adidas.
Just some Trailrunning, Hiking and Dogwalks with Megagrip and XS Trek. Most potentialky the Same with Vibram Ecostep.
Have you ever Seen cowpads on the Camino de Santiago in a Formation Like a minefield?
No, so now you know Why Lowa uses Vibram XS Trek on so many Boots incl. Renegade, Camino, Explorer, etc..
Finally Vibram Mont with Bonding agent "Ash" offered some better GRIP in wet Rocks compared to the New Vibram Mont with Bonding agent Silicon.
Pioneer at using Silicon as bonding Agent at Summer tyres with improved Grip at Rain/wet Road surfaces and Winter tyres with improves Grip on Ice (ice under pressure melts and you Slide on a waterfilm) is Continental.
Compared to adidas-Traxxion the adidas-Continental hasalways the better Balance of abrashion-resistance vs. Wet Grip.
A adidas Outsole protected against agents and chemicals regarding Generating Patina with time is the adidas GSG9.x-Series, known to outperform the Salomon Quest/Quest 4D (Contragrip TD) regarding grip on wet and dry rocks by farest distance.
No Chance by Vibram Megagrip Pro as well as the Outsole of the adidas GSG9.x-Series is even the reference for HAIX and Not Just Vibram.
    Mother of all Boots...adidas.
