Restore Cloudy Headlights - They Look Practically Brand New!
After watching John struggle to replace the headlights on his sister's old Jeep with some aftermarket knockoff, I made up my mind that if I couldn't replace my Ford Escape headlights with OEM parts, then I would try one of the restoration kits on the market. I figured I had nothing to lose... if it didn't work, then I'll either continue to live with my degraded headlights or replace them with an aftermarket set.
Only time will tell if this product and 3-step process will stand the test of time, but we are pleased with the immediate result. We used the Cerakote brand because it got rave reviews from Amazon. What we liked about it was the very thorough instructions and how nicely they packag...

Coming Soon: We Attempt to Restore Cloudy Headlights

So Ford no longer offers headlight replacements for our 2002 Escape XLT, and as many of you know I am not a fan of aftermarket replacements - if you have subscribed to our channel, you'll see the problems John had replacing the headlights on his sister's Jeep with some Chinese aftermarket lamps she bought on Amazon that were supposed to be a "direct fit"... Instead I looked at a bunch of videos...

In 15 minutes John shows how he changes the oil - without any drips/spills that stain the paving stones this time! - on my little red truck. Tools and products needed: 15mm socket on 3/8" ratchet, oil filter wrench (he used RiteFit model 2545), pans to catch & collect the used oil, rags, gloves and we strongly advise wearing goggles (although John the rebel isn't as conscientious about doing so...

Word of advice: BUY OEM! We found brand new OEM headlights on eBay. The aftermarket replacements from Amazon were not plug and play - you'll see the extra effort John had to put in for these lights to clip in. Eventually it worked, but I can't imagine many people want to waste all that time and put in all that effort when the OEM part was available at nearly the same price.
No Heat or Defrost in Your 2001 Chevy S-10? Try to Flush Your Heater Core

So Nicky's car lost heat during the winter, so the boys did a quick flush to just get him through the cold weather - which it did. But the problem came back with a vengeance: the first time was just a heating problem, but now Nicky also lost any ability to defrost the windshield. So John to the rescue with his home-grown process to flush the heater core and part of the engine. Tools he used: 5/...

John thought this excerpt from our Cowl Replacement video would be helpful for those who just need to replace/reinstall their wiper arms. Hopefully my iMovie hack job - I'm learning as I go - makes this quick demo flow a bit smoother.

2002 Ford Escape - Replace Bottom Molding on Windshield

The rubber at the bottom of my windshield absolutely disintegrated, leaving wide gaps under the windshield - probably why I was getting more road noise than ever, it would fog pretty much in any temp variation, and the fogging was hard to get rid of even with the fan on full blast. @DIY DUO, "Sweet Project Cars" YT channel only 4 days ago to the original, out of the ordinary, unconventional means of exceedingly outstanding work, released an updated headlight restoration video. He was the originator a previous method dating as far back as 10? years ago, that various other guys with them street smarts and some of your semi have tried out and are making upwards into boatloads of cash and all that I can say through absolute demonstrational purposes, it actually works! I had seen how he had done things in the past, oh say 3 years back, was indeed pretty damned good and so now he has gotten even better with the use of now two products that now all of a sudden kicks some righteous butt!! So yeah, the new and improved way as I seen him do it does indeed make those deeply worn and dingy headlights look like brand new! The Sweet Project Cars guy is also known as the "Mister Know it All" on YT go-to guy and he also has a channel on YT called "Sweet Scoots". Mike is pretty proud of how things have come along with this procedure and he is always tweaking new formulas, methods and procedures for a long time now since he does quite a bit of vehicle detailing and some restorations yet he is not afraid of sharing but in fact makes it known to all folks whom are willing to give it a try! Your Ford is the perfect candidate for Mike's do over for those headlights and by doing so will help further back this common endeavor. It would be like doing a collaboration with his channel that could give your DIY DUO channel a boost with them subscribers as well if I may say! Mike is a no non sense sort of a guy that I believe once served in the military. This is by no way a nock with what you are about to do and back when I had first seen him pull off something surely unheard of the very first time, well let's just say that the metal polish at the time was kind of costly and so in due time, such as three years back, I chose to run with a ceramic polish that also had a Urethane type of sealer; and so guess what??? It failed after reconditioning my headlights on my 03 Grand Cherokee!! After when seeing Mike in action for a second time, I now wish that I did use what Mike had suggested in the first place and I am at a shame for not doing so when you see this: Our NEW Head Light Polishing Method is AMAZING! @ 'Sweet Project Cars" YT channel. Often, Mike comes up some fantastic ideas often but perhaps not often enough because this man stays busy! I'm here to tell yah's that this kit sold on Amazon failed me and to look at those headlights now, just 3 years later, looks worse off than the original condition of my headlights only 3 years ago to the day! Last year, you could already see a very highly noticeable worsening and in about 9 more days it will be a full 3 years since it was done. Here's that product that is sold on Amazon....CERAKOTE®Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit that sells for just under 17 clams. Such misery while using this product and even though this Jeep does not get driven that much, it sets more so in the drive more than anything else and those headlights look like you now what!

      Wood? In your bathroom shower? We have never seen that before, and would not recommend using a wood soap dish because eventually the wood will rot. Marine varnish is not what it used to be... we highly recommend sticking with ceramic. I can't get over just how loose fitted the headlight housings and even the side marker and turn signal housings are as well! What a fricken mess that Jeep had conjured up to begin with! That and the fact of how in the hell are you are supposed to do proper headlight alignment and maintain said alignment if everything is loose as hell and really doesn't appear to want to stay in the first place! The cheapness even of the OEM and even the aftermarket set just blows my mind, first and foremost!!! Even though I have a broken plastic side mount tab on my 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee and that all started with a front corner hit, yet ever so slight, to get an even close alignment from the more outboard adjustment, I had gotten the idea of cutting a 3"x4" piece of rubber floormat so as to wedge it in between the broken plastic mounting tab and the area that the housing tab and the mount rest position to get the headlamp to be center neutral! Beforehand, the headlight was shinning right beyond the road ditch and since the headlamp R&R can be a little stubborn to say the least, my son had mentioned, well let's try and pry at the portion of where the curved uppermost part of the fender meets up with the headlamp itself, so he did! Secondly, this is where I came up with the use of that 3'x4" scrap of floor mat to wedge in there to keep from the headlight to end up moving cockeyed all over again! It just wasn't enough to try a pull out some of that curled and creased edge of the fender what was telling me that perhaps the headlight back housing which is metal was probably bent up as well! The previous owner had hit something like a glancing deer hit at the corner of the bumper that also jammed part of the uppermost part of the fender however so slight! The strongest evidence is where the bumper skin got split of the topside of the skin and thus what's behind the skin can and will tell a better side of damage underneath, although, ever so slight! But who is really going to go through that much trouble, yet to do bumper skin removal and seam mending and all the rest all because cosmetically it is EVER so slight??? Not me nor my son go to those absolute lengths because of a very slight imperfection on an already 20+ year old vehicle that could cost you 3 1/2 hours R&R at minimum and full restoration that has the potential to cost oh say upwards into 900-1000 bucks to faithfully restore including a near paint match but not straight on! I used to carry full coverage back when my 2003 Saturn Ion 3 was still on the road because back then, I positively knew that any kind of wreckage or vehicle carnage could prove to be very costly but who really has that kind of coverage that they really can afford anymore??? So as a mister fix-it, you just run with it and anything outside of some aspects of repair, you just do what you can and skip the high cost bs all together. Once again Margarette and John, both problem solvers when just some things, just want to drive yah's nutso and it's that quick thinking on your feet solves those problems. There has also been reported incidences where by Dorman parts solutions don't always works best and it's of my opinion that Dorman buys up leftover OEM parts from the automakers and/or product overruns and these parts can also be problematic from time to time as well! And so don't even really think that we are immune to the auto part places that also buy up OEM parts from their warehouses that are excess to their inventories as well and it's because warehouse storage of parts that are not easily sold comes at a very high cost premium for storage. The auto parts stores also buy up some of these Chineseium type parts as well, be it for the lack of not having parts to sell although they rely on parts sourced here in the states first! Examples: those damnable Chinese made brake rotors and Chinese rebuilt and new marketed alternators and starters that have flooded the market like crazy. Since the trade market is way out of whack and whether certain parts are still made in Mexico for instance, these parts houses just have a nasty habit of turning on a dime towards what and where stuff is available and fulfill the demand in the shortest amount of time is mostly their kind of aims in the short term but then again, will things really return back to normal; I kind of doubt that!! Things can only get worse and this is why I bought up as many parts deemed affordable for my 03 starting in 2021, parts that I know will come at a hefty premium if I didn't act right away!

    Thank you for the tips! Just finished replacing our soap dish- broken a couple of years ago from a shaving gel can falling on it. Your info on supplies helped a lot! My dish had a lot attaching it, so I used all of the same except also used an oscillating multi-tool to help with the initial cut around the dish, then used a pry bar to pry off the wall, and the multi-tool again for removal of leftovers on the wall. The multi-tool created more dust and noise than I wanted, but wearing glasses, a dust mask, and ear muffs helped. Now it is in the 24-48 hour curing period. Excited to remove the tape and do the final touch ups soon. Thanks again! 😊

      Thanks John - it went surprisingly well... I waited a long time to do it because I had those same concerns. My best advice is to take your time, go super slow, gentle and deliberate. I think using the hand held grout saw was the way to go. If I used the dremel, it would have gone faster but adds more risk to damaging the tiles or the wall. Be very careful pulling the soap dish off the wall - luckily whoever did the job in the first place was cheap with the grout, so it pulled out really easy for me with no damage to the sheetrock - the wrong sheetrock, I might add, so that may have had something to do with it too. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

    Hi Folks! I love some great turkey although I am not big on ground up turkey! Oh but you've really got me going on this super-duper turkey vegetable breadcrumb meatloaf with the Trader Joes 21 seasoning ensemble along with baked potato and broccoli! Damn, that sounds so good!! I looked up the TJ's 21 salute seasoning and I must say that it is a very good seasoning combination especially when working with a bird that ended up going through a grinder. I am seriously considering making that nice recipe oh say about 10 days from now to try and get my edge back! At the same time, I've got a counter type brand new oven to try out too and so this will be a new for me go-to! Thank-you Margarette and John for sharing! This is a reply for Katty Koo, whose question reached us even though we don't see it posted here. The question was whether buying a replacement that is 4x4" could work in a larger 5 3/4x4" space by just filling in with additional adhesive & grout. Our opinion is no - we would suggest stopping at your local Home Depot or tile store to purchase a tile that fills in that space (tiles come in all sizes these days, and you can cut a tile to size if you absolutely had to). Once you make the right sized space for a replacement soap dish with a 4x4" backing, then buy and retrofit it in. We were happy with the loctite product we used in this video. So far so good...

    More times than none, while growing up as a kid, about the only seasonings that were used was salt, pepper, paprika, some onion powder or garlic powder (occasionally) celery seed, sage, dill, (occasionally); cinnamon or pumpkin spices (occasionally) and that's about it! Other than that, the use of salted butter or lard to go with these spices and that's all folks! My Grandmother on my Mom's side was a big proponent for the use of lard, especially during the Depression Era was par for the course especially when pan frying chicken and baked pies and the lard taste is hard to get past because it left a taste in your mouth that is less desirable but I would never complain because if you did, my Mom would say either eat it or wear it, because she was that serious about any of the cooking done by her or Dear Grandma! My mom used Crisco instead though which was tolerable and still taste worthy! I do love that oil oil though and most often I use both olive and butter combined because butter doesn't seem to scorch that easily compared to olive oil! BUT, I always use medium to low cooking temps because I do not want to wreck my pans or the taste of my foods. If it requires more of my time to cook it then so be it! That recipe for cauliflower in the oven is a great choice and since I do have multiple ovens (4), I can always scale things down no matter what. Those air fryers with the use of olive oil should work quite well too! I mostly steam or blanch my veggies for the most part and most often don't even season them at all, just veggie flavors most often is all that I need.

    With that old coffee pot, you could add 2-2 1/2 scoops of coffee grinds and really get a blast of caffeine with only 10 cups worth of water and so ask me I know! Ah, the days of being back in the military and making that first pot of coffee at work using one of those old Mr. Coffee makers or better yet making up a batch of 30 cup urn of coffee that was so hot that it would scorch the coffee but then it also turned out as about as thick as Missouri mud! Oh yeah, and I didn't really, particularly like it all that much! So now a days I just either use one of those el cheapo's for a coffee pot like what Wally World sells, take out a 3 year warranty and so when it dies, I go grab another off the shelf! I once had a Regal model that Walmart sold and it was a cheapo and it lasted me 13 years folks! It was one of those deals that Walmart was promoting and for only 15 bucks mind you. The one that I'm using right now I set it up for 8 cups worth using only one scoop of grounds and it brews it quite nicely in about 5 minutes and so once the first cup is poured, the rest goes into my thermos that actually can hold 8 cups worth. Throughout the day I just grab a cup and lightly reheat it in the microwave as needed and that thermos full lasts me all day clear into 9 p.m. at night. One thing that I detest is a coffee maker that scorches them beans! I just absolutely hate it!!! I also don't like coffee that is high in acidity either! This is why I stick to Folgers Original Classic Roast, buy the 40.3 ounce at Walmart and so it will last me a whole month plus 3 days at a cost of around 13 bucks at Walmart.

    Hi M! Loved your demo! Thanks so much! I was wondering if you ever had dyes in your length when you transitioned to henna. If so, did you applied over it? I don’t want to cut my length and is currently dyed with boxed Naturcolor brand permanent colors. Could I transition to henna with the old dyed length? Thank you❤

    • @diyduo_getyourfix
      @diyduo_getyourfix 3 месяца назад

      Great question - and the answer is be VERY careful with this type of transition because you can actually burn your hair off. I was using a "chemical-free" dye (getting it done at the salon) and then Covid hit, so I turned to henna. I think I wait longer than most people between dye treatments and so it was probably 3 months since my last dye job at the salon - and I had no problem with the henna, but the color is the color - it's not like you can exactly match the color you got at the salon. So that's one thing to be aware of. Secondly, after Covid, I went back to the salon because I was being lazy (this henna process is a full weekend) and the stylist told me she did not want to touch my hair because even using "natural" dye products could react with the henna on my hair and burn it off. I talked to another stylist who gave me a bit more insight and said that is true - but more likely when going from chemical to henna vs henna to chemical and TIMING is a big factor as well... she told me if it's months between the two treatments, it should be OK. But I would err on the side of caution if I were you - and that's if you're willing to roll the dice on the shade/color you're going to get (and you may need to play around with the henna and the indigo if your looking for a shade that's between light brown and black) - give it several months before you try, and test it on a very tiny section of hair so that, God forbid, if you encounter a bad reaction, you can quickly cut those strands off and it won't be noticeable. My stylist (who I trust implicitly) told me she's seen people burn their hair down to their scalp because they didn't take these precautions, so please be careful or wait for your chemical dyed hair to grow out - and even so, always try a new dye, henna included, on just a few strands to see how your hair and scalp react.

    • @celidagolobic2156
      @celidagolobic2156 3 месяца назад

      @@diyduo_getyourfixaw! Thank you so much for answering this question! I realize now that I’m not the best candidate for henna dyeing since I have a blend of custom made color (by myself). I have been applying at home but it would be impossible to match it. I also have long curly hair, so my best bet is transition to natural grey or continue using Naturcolor brand, which does have ppd in the formula and I suspect it to be the culprit of my itchy sensitive scalp. Thank you❤

    • @diyduo_getyourfix
      @diyduo_getyourfix 3 месяца назад

      @@celidagolobic2156 I turned to henna because the chemical dyes were killing my naturally curly hair. If your current product is making your scalp itch, maybe it's time to try something different. The all-natural dye I would get at the salon was imported from Italy - unfortunately the stylist would never tell me the brand. If you're willing to try henna, then think waiting for your dyed hair to grow out, and then applying the henna color on just a very tiny section of hair to see what color you get is your safest bet. Also know that grays can be REALLY stubborn with henna - it can take a few rounds of dying before the grays will take the color - my first time they were golden, the next time a bit pumpkin orange, and now with the right mix of brown and indigo in step 2 they take the color and I get the shade I'm looking for.

    Big Question Margarette: Do you know how to make Steak Diane??? My ex used to make it for me and I asked her just how she would make it but the method in which she cooked it hadn't really stuck with me and I just had to trust how she did it! After all it was so tender and the beef was so very near to being medium rare and every morsel of this dish was ever so tender to include the veggies such as onions and red bell peppers that was truly over the top!

My ex wife may have used tenderloin that surely wasn't that thick, oh say almost 3/8" thick and in total weight of each around 4 ounces each, (not medallions) and so like most meats the quick light browning is most favored, although I believe that she did the caramelization of veggies like onion, red bell peppers and mushrooms first with butter and olive oil, and perhaps taken the veggies out and commenced the light but quick browning then put the veggies back in and placed the meat over top of the veggie and finished cooking the meat for perhaps another 4-5 minutes is my guess! Hi Margarette! I hope this the appropriate spelling of your first name but please correct me if you will! I just don't think that I've ever seen that many veggies in one roasting pan ever but it is a big sight for one's eyes to behold for sure! You just might be expecting some company soon since you are such a good cook and so look out for me to start showing up! Wow, I've used the frozen type OJ and salted butter to make a glaze for chicken on the grill before and my Ma has used it for some of her recipes but this is a first for me to see being used with olive oil as a helpful tenderization of veggies. I can also visualize using balsamic vinegar and apple juice to perform nearly the same thing for a different flavoring. With a balsamic vinegar and apple juice though, you just might have some favorable browning effect such as with the remaining 8-10 minutes underneath the broiler such as what the restaurants do. The one thing that my Ma was famous for, be it she too was a restaurant owner was that she would make those veggies extra chunky just so it would make our customers eyes just bug out of their heads! She did it with soups, salads, and meat roasts with vegetables like crazy! More often than ever my Ma outdid what my own father could come up with and he actually attended culinary school down in NYC back in 1952, I believe. So yeah, keep those great dishes coming!! Although I live alone, I just don't cook like that anymore but at least I can drool and smack my lips from time to time and scale down at least some kind of concoction there of without having too much leftovers and waste. Margarette, you are such a great cook and John surely must love you for that and then some that it isn't even funny! BTW, that toilet seat bolt removal has failed only because using that trick only will work by tightening and not so much with the l loosening so I guess that it is truly dremel cut-off wheel time to start cutting away! The bolts that they use now are virtually about the same but they are all nylon bolts that won't rust up or corrode and are much easier to deal with. When I bought this oak toilet seat for my Mom and installed it twice over, I thought that I was doing her a favor and show off it's wood beauty, but hell no; some 51 years later it came back and bit me on the @$$!! LOL.

So thank you for the compliments, and yes using balsamic vinegar and apple cider work as well - great tips for those who are watching and considering! And I love the idea of keeping the veggies big and in chunks! I make that big tray just for me and John, we are trying to eat lots of veggies, and this will stay in the fridge for about a week - and even tastes great cold. As far as your toilet seat goes, John swears by the dremel - he says cut the bolt from the top of the toilet and then push the rest of the bolt down (if you don't have the space to work from the bottom)... another trick is vice grips on the top and socket wrench from the bottom (he says it's been 9/16ths for his school projects). I believe that the Logo on those sneakers is Sketcher brand! At a price point of 70 bucks and if that were to happen to my sneakers, I'd be calling Sketcher and I'd be raising holy hell with them and demand a new pair!!! For me, although I've been tempted to buy 60 dollar sneakers, to include a pair of Sketchers, I won't! I will however buy a cheap pair coming from Walmart, get two years out of them, reserve yet another pair of cheap sneakers, same brand and so once the one pair starts getting ratty, I'll use them to go out and cut the grass with and that's that! Once two years are up with the first pair of sneakers are done, I chuck them! Essentially I only spend no more than 40 bucks a pair, buy 2 of that kind all at once, two years later I get two more pair and be done with it! I don't go out and run or jog or walking like I used to because there's to many hell raisers that could easily run over you out here in the sticks. These roadways out in the boonies aren't that safe to speak of. Speaking of broken stuff, my oak toilet seat of about 29 years old, broke in half, so I ordered a new one coming from Amazon. It came in and I was all ready to install it! Well the bolts that secure it to the toilet boll had been corroded and rusted up badly and i could not loosen the nylon nut off of one of them. After an intense search for a special socket search for this special socket...there is only one manufacturer that had made them. The cost was to be 38 clams plus 14.95 shipping to take these cheesy nuts off. Well, I told myself screw that noise!! In order to try and get that nut off, since it is only 10 inches of space to get at it even with a pair of pliers and it would not budge! The next plan of action was to remove the toilet completely and then try to get at it. Well, I wasn't having that either because the install of this was a thorough chore to get toilet base seal to seal properly and at this point does not leak and I chose not to disturb it either! Well, I then decided to buy epoxy glue the toilet seat back together and it totally worked! The "J-B Weld Clear Weld" quick setting formula Product no. 50112 absolutely works on wood, glass, ceramics, porcelain and nearly anything else you can think of! Amazon had a special price of just under 9 bucks for 2 epoxy weld kits, .85 oz. 25ml each X 2 since I have all sorts of things that need repairing around my place! Now today, I will take the toilet seat bolt and nut that did come loose to the hardware store and measure up the diameter size and thread size to buy two nuts that fit the bolt, just so that when I get home, I can get 2 of those nuts to thread on and make what you call making them into a jam nut and then be able to use oh say a regular 3/8' socket wrench to muscle that bolt out with. I suppose that there is more than one way to skin a cat and so this is the way to approach to be able to install the new toilet seat. It wasn't until yesterday that I decided the new work around to get the job done and so this idea came out of no ware's! There is no way that I was going to spend 38 clams plus 14.75 shipping for a specialty socket that I would only use for a one time deal, period!!!

Regarding your toilet seat, John says he deals with this often in his 100 yr old school - he has used a dremel with a cutoff wheel - cutting from the top vs underneath the toilet - to much success. He says since you're so handy, you probably have that and to give it a try and let us know!

      Up until 3 days back, I had not used JB Weld for going on nearly 50 years. The time previously that I had used JB Weld was when I owned my first motorcycle back in 73. The clearances and the such small space doesn't really afford me to use a dremel cutoff wheel and so believe you me, I had already thought about the use of it. I was too late to make it to the hardware store yesterday, over where my son lives. My next crack at it will be perhaps Monday. With the use of creating two locked nuts or as i refer as making a jam nut should lock onto that toilet seat bolt quite well and muscle that bolt out other hinged point pot metal casting and if not break the casting with the use of an ordinary socket , extension plus a ratchet.@@diyduo_getyourfix

      To be completely honest, the condensation started to slowly creep back in over time (the FL high humidity/dew point could also have been a factor), and Gilbert needed additional front end work so he ended up replacing the headlight (to the tune of $3,000) at that time. I would say he got a few months out this hack - but when he changed it out he didn't have near the amount of condensation as when we tried this method. If you have the time and you're comfortable working on your vehicle, it may be worth a try before paying the dealer $3K to replace it.
