So John dissected our misbehaving maker, discovered the problem, and fixed it. The only investment he had to make was purchasing a new $40 bit set for the very unusual tamper-proof screws they used.
Other than that, it was a fairly easy fix, and our old coffee maker is back on the counter, happily humming along and producing our perfect cup of coffee, just like the first day we bought it.
