INCEPTION: Emulation Within Emulation!
I was an Amiga nut (still am) but this never appealed to me. A cheap IDE cd ROm plus my 1200 was better. Like you said, The trick missed was the Akiko chip. I have never found any CD32 package that didnt work on my 1200. Didnt try WC - maybe if that does use the Akiko - but also I think an accelerated 1200 could emulate the Akiko..... All the CD32 versions of software I have work on my 1200.
when i click on lha at dopus...it come message...LHA: unknown command
Q...your AGS workbench and when you ran Final Writer, those screens were not in interlace. Just wanted to you be aware. Check it 😜
The WB is. I changed the config. Also Vista Pro only opens up as a HiRes Interlaced screen. As I said, in person you can see the flicker. It's just very subtle.
Q. A little warning before you show Mehdi Ali please. I was eating. Ha..... Final Writer shows 1/1/78. I wonder why 1978?
lol sorry! Oh yeah that is an odd date. not even sure how that is.
Regarding the keyboard and nouse, you can definitely plug them in a stock CD-32. You have a ps2 style connector on the side where you kan plug in a keyboard, I plugged in my Amiga 2000 keyboard through a AT to PS2 adapter. The mouse just plugs in one of the gameports as usual. If you have Workbench on a CD you can then boot to Workmench and usd the keyboard and mouse.
Ohhh? New info! Thank PINNED this so others hopefully see. Thank you!
There is a TF360 which has a 68060 Processor in it.
I suspected! That's great. My 3D rendering fans would be happy.
Got one with the tf330 68030 really good.
they really do make a world a difference for any Amiga
As janky as the PlayStation's graphics hardware was in some ways, AGA/Akiko vs Playstation being released only about a year apart is a pretty sad matchup. CD32 had Wing Commander, and PS1 had Wing Commander IV. Definitely one of those things that seemed smart at the time, but launching a new console based on computer hardware turned out to be way harder than it looked. (See also, Apple Pippen!)
yup. desperate and or dumb times.
You just reminded me to get my CD32 out and see if it still works, I also have to recap it. I bought the caps for the CD32 and all my other Amiga's months ago, I need more time in a week.
Awesome! Yeah get it out, she begs to be played with. :)
Its fun today to run UAE and emulate Amigas, not all software works but enough does to satisfy. I find after twenty five years of Win and Nix, the Amiga Workbench is clunky to use.
It really is a different time!
How many of us out there learned how to use a mouse with commodore with the instructions fromGEOS?
Fun times. the AGA models should have had bitmap as well as bitplane. and the whole Commodore business model founded on a saturated market, you cannot sell new models to children (parents) and teens every year. at the very least people pass on the old model to younger siblings or friends. sales thus will be low. It not like the business world.
I was so exited back then for AGA. Then I started using them. Hmmmmm.
Ah... my first CDROM drive... because i was really economically challenged back then and a mate found a few dozens (!!!) in a dumpster from some college that had simply thrown them out. True story. There were plenty of PSU's and gamepads, some keybs and mice and he even found one SX1 for his. I wasn't so lucky so, Network CD and a "sort of null modem" cable later and i now had a CDROM drive. And it served me quite well (if slowly) until ATAPI drives became cheap.
Wow! Haha, man you hear about stories like this.
They were the fun days, I transferred my Amigas DOS emulator file system across null modem using Laplink to a newly built 486 PC.
@@joefish6091 Oh, "parallel networking" was a year after or so, because... not enough money for an external modem, but a friend had given me a hand me down P133 and there were plenty of WinModem's i could take home from work, we had boxes filled with them from upgrades. So, buy PC NETWORK (from Weird Sscience) that came with a LapLink'ish cable, setup PLIP, learn how to use Wingate to setup a proxy, and... shared network. Then it became NT4 and Winroute, WinModem became "Realtek NIC from the junk box" when cable models and "high speed internet" became a thing, then... You're 10000% right, those WERE the fun days... @HoldandModify The dumpster CD32's were from Cambridge School or British Institute, can't remember which, they'd used it for classes i guess, and they when the CD32 and Commodore went bust, they simply dumped them all in the trash bin.
Aside for the Tower's the only Amiga's I do not have in my collection is the CDTV and CD32. Space here is at a premium although I could fit a CDTV in my living room and the CD32 really does not take up much space but I often worry about he optical drive heads failing. I think not to long ago Amiga Kit was selling new heads, well I know someone was. If I were to add these to my collection I would want replacement heads or drive mechanisms but something tells me the drive mechanisms are unique.
I do fear the day they die. unlike other Amigas they require special treatment for repair.
I didn’t know there was an Amiga Wing Commander…or I played the heck out of it on my buddie’s PC and no longer wanted to play. But the “irony” is that the spaceships in that were rendered on an Amiga 3000 and turned into sprites (with Imagine?). Something like that. Anyway, I guess it went full-circle. Kinda neat if that’s accurate!
I wondered if you had known about it. I remember you being a big WC fan. I mean I imagine you were. Random commenter person. ;)
I always wanted one of these because you were getting an A1200 PLUS a CDROM.
A real A1200 could have a harddrive and floppys plus an accelerator +RAM pus CDROM via PCMCIA slot. My 68020EC at 28MHz did 5 MIPs , my I9-9900K 8C/16T at 5GHz does 400K MIPs
Imagine 2.0 instruction manual! 😂
So, what device did you use to grab footage from an Amiga here, which you then showed on screen? I'm really looking for a good capture card, ideally with composite input, that can grab my Amiga footage in a file, then upload it as such
Oh boy yeah. this was a little VGA box i bought off Ebay for $40 In think. Haven't used it in a long while. Ever since getting most my Amigas HDMI. Also I reverted to filming off screen again or using emulators and screen capture.
The prices of these are ridiculous now. I suspect even 10 years ago they were as cheap as chips. Only the rich collectors can afford these npw 😢
I was shocked I finally found one, working, for a "deal." I always wait. Passed on so many the last couple years. Now, this still was not cheap. Not like they were ten years ago. But if you are patient and always on the prowl, you can save some money at least. Over how much they normally seem to list for. That's how I've gotten most of my newer Amiga gear. Thankfully the bulk of my Amigas were gotten before the price insanity.
Any title with CDXL was amazing! Sherlock Holmes was a personal fav. Full motion video segments embedded in a game was totally revolutionary at the time.
Yes the CDXL format of video was impressive for then. Seems like it was overlooked.

There is more than one version of Smash Hits by Hendrix. This is true for both vinyl and cd releases. Although the American release is by far the most common.. Hendrix had already cut two albums and Smash Hits was produced to promote his multi country tour. The legendary Netherlands release of Smash Hits on Polydore Records cuts two songs from the American release and substitutes two other songs. It's vynil and has no bonus tracks. That's still my favorite version of Smash Hits by far. The cover art is the same as The American release. But the Netherlands release has a different back cover. And the last time I checked the correct track list was not on the internet database that the WMP keys to when ripping a cd.
Hello, I enjoyed the channel, I worked for Digital Creations and Play when we merged with the folks from NewTek. I wrote the fish animation tutorial for Brilliance, I joined Digital Creations just before we launched DCTV. Greg Bahlhorn
One of my CDTV's has been modified for standard PS2 ports for keyboard and mouse.
Yeah seems like s good mod to get.
Was that "CD with graphics" a Commodore proprietary format or did they actually manage to make a interpretor for it? Nvm, I googled it, it's not a Commodore thing :) .. seems simple enough for a ECS system to view it though!
Yeah CD+G was a standard that the CDTV supported. :)
I’ve got a Commodore TV but unfortunately it has no CD and it can’t even pickup TV channels anymore. However, it does look great with my C64 though! And before any one asks, it’s a Commodore branded TV not a 1701 or 1802 monitor for example.
Woah. Never knew about those.
Cool
Yea as have been said CDROM works, I remember having FredFish CDs working just fine. No Amiga will read CDDA discs (CD Audio) without "drivers" - in 2.x land with datatypes there are datatypes for it. Pretty sure you can do this in 1.3 as well with a cdda device driver but my memory is kinda failing me here. A friend of mine got the CDTV with keyboard and mouse and I stole the keyboard for my A4000 - worked out of the box. I even swapped the case so I had the keys in black and the case in white, looked super slick
Audio cd's work fine, even without datatypes.
@@Krushernl Depends on what you want to do - play them or mount the CDDA to rip them for example
Ha ha ha, I love the "No Effort November". Loving your videos from the UK
Thanks! :)
The keyboard is fundamentally the same as the A2000/3000/4000 (basically an A500 keyboard in a case)...except a different pinout. You need to swap the pins round or use an adaptor and they'll work.
Its really such a shame the CDTV was released as the production version rather than the CDTV-CR. Then you have the utter failure of the marketing! As a "living room" A500 with a CD drive I think could have been decently successful.
Great video. I really must drag mine out and have a play. The best version of the A500 ever.
commodore was really failing at this time. I really bet they knew everything they released was not going to stick.
I remember getting computer catalogs with small not even quarter size pages of their models of computers . It was a hard transition time from 8 to 16 to 32. I really think the processor won it. There was no holding on after ibm and x86 started taking off. (not even talking about piracy) .
Looks like Sony borrowed this thing's d-pad for the PlayStation lol.
I feel like Commodore could've lasted a least a few more years if not for their countless failed attempts to turn their computers into game consoles or set-top boxes. They should have just targeted the kiosk space if they really wanted to make money. The CD32 is obviously what ultimately killed them, but none of these other products helped either. Most of them are considered some of the worst commercial failures in gaming and computers in general.

Best looking Amiga ever made. I'll die on that hill.
Oddly enough, the existence of that monitor as an option makes me think about picking up an Amiga again. Briefly. (There's lots of reasons why it's a bad idea. But Still.)
DO IT! IT'S NEVER A BAD IDEA!! :)
I have been spinning CDs for CD32 and CDTV on my Amiga 1200 with 030 with hard disc and CD player since 1994, then with the PPC/060 BVision 3D CD/DVD burner since 1999. And then from 2009 on SAM440 motherboard for AmigaOS4 the best😎 Unfortunately I have never had CDTV or CD32 .
CDTV the ugly girl at school that grows up to be an international supermodel years later. I want a CDTV and a supermodel girlfriend....... CDTV if I had to make a choice between the two 😏
It will show CDs in Workbench, but only CD-ROMs. Not audio CDs. No extra drivers needed. They’re all inside the CDTV OS ROMs , so yes, Amiga magic after all 😉
Oh really? That's great!! AMIGA MAGIC!!!
4000kb dont work you can buy an adaptor for it though
Ahhh ok, thank you!
Very interesting, thank you very much and have a great day!
Thank you! You too!
Had one of these CDTV systems back in 1993 after swapping my A500 for it. Had the keyboard, mouse, the Black floppy drive and the remote. Back then it was very limited on what you could do. Had a few CD titles with it, such as Sherlock Holmes consulting detective. Now a days you can get ROM upgrades, SCSI add-one etc..
Ooo you had all the goodies!
Doesn’t the CDTV support Workbench 2?
If you have higher than 1.3 ROM installed. The CDTV has the original 1.3 ROM fitted.
@ thank you. It’s been a while and I never had a cdtv.
Based on included ROM.
Is it possible that maybe these cards which produce the better results could be that their clock speed is an perfect multiple of the internal bus speed so that they stay in sync? Perhaps the falling out of sync has a cascading effect causing wait times through the bus, resulting in poorer performance. Might be an interesting test with a PiStorm32, adjusting clock speeds.
To the proponent of EDM music being massively influenced by Amiga music producers, is that a Amiga 500 with a music tracker was much cheaper than a full music studio with a mixer, synthesizers, drums, effects gear, sampler unit, and other equipment pro musicians would need. And second of all, trackers are a much more streamed-lined and easy way of making music, and were easier to share through floppy disks or a BBS than a cassette with some demos. With the Amiga demoscene / underground, module files could be shared at a much faster pace than traditional vinyl and cassette prints. New musicians were given more opportunities to make video game music through more independent groups who would publish their Amiga / Atari ST games in magazines. There's actually a niche genre of Hardcore called Cheapcore (or Amigacore), which people would use Protracker or OctaMed to make Gabber / Hardstyle Hardcore.
I would love to try LW again, but it's too expensive form y needs :/ Glad to see it is still being used
I think maybe your case doesn't fit because the metal tabs on the bottom RF shield are sticking up. You need to fold down the ones underneath the floppy drive or it might not sit right.
ohhhh I did not notice! Thank you.
