I got into collecting computers back in the 80s… I started my computer journey with a ZX81, then a 48k speccy, then C64, then Amiga 500… but during that time I knew friends who were selling off their old systems and upgrading, so I started buying their old systems from my pocket money and cash I’d make doing odd jobs.
I had a dream of owning all the different systems that were out there back then, Beebs and CoCos, Memotechs and Enterprizes, Ataris and Archimedes. But then life happened and I stopped buying systems… still kept all the ones I had bought, but then put them into storage when I moved continents.
Started buying again last year, first with an Amiga 1000, then a 500, then a C64… also picked up a hemlock, Amiga Modem, original user manuals, external drive and a bunch of other stuff.
Now about to ship all my original systems across the ocean so I can play with them again for the first time in 26 years….cant wait!

I have a lot of 8-bit machines and about 10 Amigas but I only see it as hoarding if I have more than one of a model that works. As they get restored then they are moved on to people who will enjoy them. The nostalgia though, that never goes away! Thanks Q!

  • @preferredimage

It started as nostalgia for me. I decided 20 years back to rebuy all the computers I had as a kid right up to when I went PC. so ZX81, Spectrum, +2 amiga etc. then I decided to buy all the ones I wanted as a kid..... I'm 49 computers in so far, all working and restored, no duplicates. Amiga 5, 6 and 1200 but no x000 machines. yet....

I certainly got into this game mostly for the nostalgia, and a little bit of me was thinking that fixing these old computers would teach me electronics. It did teach me a little, but I really would have been better off with a beginners book and a "my first electronics" kit. For the RUclipsrs who want to make money on this, I would say that you have to be into it, but you have to be into it for the viewers nostalgia, not your own, otherwise you could end up making 600 videos about the same computer and there is only so much life in that. I think even at this point, the 8-bit guy has done videos on just about every retro computer on the planet, and now he is dialing it back and opening an arcade.

Nostalgia for me too Q. That said was watching an Aussie RUclipsr recently who came across a guy who had 6 rooms full of retro gear, who had passed away. They were helping his wife clear it out / sell it. I found it very depressing - a guy who collected and collected and then passed away but could not take anything with him. 3:32 - Exactly!!!!! Also yep the limitations of 30-40 year technology still make it interesting and fun.

I definitely got into it for the nostalgia. But 💯 the hoarding part can kick in. I started picking up machines I loved as a kid/teen that I never owned so that I could get to experience them. I’ve very limited space which naturally put a curb on my ability to hoard, thankfully. I still splurge occasionally for addons for the machines I’ve got, but it’s all part of enjoying using them.

Mine is both. It started as an nostalgic buy but brought a A500 as my one in 93 was as À600 with a 20mb hd. It got to point the board needs repairs that I'm not good with and no tools now in storage. Now got a A600 that needs recaping. (Sound distortion on left Channel channel) again something needs doing soon but I'm no good at that. Then we jump further In to the expansions added on over time. It does become a little asset for the future as these machines are getting older and far less working.

    me: Yes. 😉😂
I've been collecting/hoarding CBM's for a while. Part of it is that when I was younger I simply couldn't afford to buy what I wanted. I went from a 64c with a full RAMLink setup to an Amiga 1200, but to this day I'm kicking myself for selling my 64 to get the 1200. :( At least I didn' t pull a stupid and sell that A1200; I've had it since I bought it back in late 1992!
I have multiple Amigas but only one of each model (still missing an A3000, A4000 though.... had an A500 and a CD32 a few years ago but I had to sell them when I fell on hard financial times. 😭). Ironically I own seven C128's, but that's because I bought them to fix. lol. Fix them I did, they all work perfectly now but now I can't part with them. lol.
My daily driver 64 is an Ultimate64 though. My daily driver Amiga is a Raspberry Pi 400 since I don't want to take the chance of damaging my real Amiga hardware, but every now and then I'll break out the real thing.

It is the just complex enough to have to learn but crap enough to love.
That's really what I love about it. I'll put it this way, I am a big fan of Seasons
1-4 of Babylon 5. Why? Because of the state of the Graphics. It's that late 80s
(1990 - 1993) Graphics style that really gets me creative. I want to see and make
and do in that style. A movie, a television series. For me, the amiga has a lot of what
I want. It's creative that beat apple at their game and still had room to game. That's
my bag and I am sticking to it.
I want to actually USE the Amiga I have. In some cases, to use it as a poor man's Quantel
Paintbox with the flicker fixer and the DCTV and the Video Toaster. I still need to get one
of those. Anyway, it's using the hardware for what it's meant to do, and I love it. I really, really
do. Sure, I could use AI to spit out something. But, it won't be mine and it won't be true to what
was created back then. Even if it got to the point of being close. It's not quite right and I want it
right and most of all radical dude.

Going down this rabbit hole now, is purely for nostalgia or 'mother duck syndrome' purposes.

Yeah, on point. And yes, if you don't know what you're doing and you want to get into the whole "AmigaOS thing" and not really the games/hw part, emulation should be first stop, because, even for people that KNOW what they're doing, it's still a minefield, always was. One faux pas and kaboom, lots of rebuild. It's really hard not to appreciate how you can simply copy/paste your "Amiga", try whatever you want and if it goes south, you just copy it back. And while i can still appreciate the old boxes charm, life is a lot more comfy with an SSD, lots of RAM and a ridonculous CPU. Actually quite fun, and a huge distraction, to browse old coverdisk collections on your "xtra fast" A500/A1200 and relive all those moment you had, but without the wait you had.

I do hobby electronics and have assembled Z80 single board computer kits. They are easy because the PCB's are high quality and all the components are through hole and not surface mount.
