#MandolinMonday: Emile Arsenault's - Devon's Tune of the Day 062
Wait I thought this was #MandolinMonday, why is there a fiddle?? Haha, I had some fun working with video editing and split screens here so we could have a special guest on the video today. Today's tune is a really twisty, twirly Acadian tune from New Brunswick fiddler Gerry Robichaud called "Emile Arsenault's". Robichaud learned this tune from Oscar Melanson who bed-ridden at the time so he could only whistle the tunes to Gerry. But Oscar perfectly remembered this tune and a few others from a visit from Rogersville Acadian fiddler Emile Arsenault in the 1930s. It's a pretty spectacular tune and goes great with fiddle and mandolin, as you'll see!

#SqueezeboxSunday: Hédard Bulger's Tune - Devon's Tune of the Day 061
Просмотров 6215 часов назад
We were very sad to hear of the passing of New Brunswick Acadian fiddler Hédard Bulger in late June! Here's a lovely little march (?) that we learned from Hédard about ten years ago when were visiting the Acadian Peninsula. He owned a fish shop, "Marché de Poisson Bulger", in Le Goulet, NB, and was nice enough to try to remember some of his favorite fiddle tunes for us. He didn't have names for...
Hanter Dro - Devon's Tune of the Day 060

I got to meet English fiddler James Dumbleton recently when I was working on an article on the music of his band, Lihou, for Songlines Magazine. I learned this Breton "hanter dro" from James' RUclips and he learned it in turn from the band Bellevue Rendezvous. Not sure where they got it from but oh wow is it a gorgeous tune from Brittany! I can't seem to figure out how hanter dro's work, and wh...

We learned this lively French-Canadian tune from the playing of Québécois fiddler Eric Favreau who learned it from Lauréat Goulet, but HECK we had no idea until I posted this that it's actually an Andy DeJarlis tune! So it's Métis! According to Patti Kustorok, Andy wrote this tune and it's often called "The Cat Scratch Reel" (she plays the parts in different order than we do). Well it's a great...
Luke Payne's - Devon's Tune of the Day 058

Been chatting with folks about Newfoundland music and I remembered one of my favorite Newfoundland tunes! "Luke Payne's" is from the awesome Newfoundland band The Dardanelles and I assume they learned this tune from Luke Payne himself who is a guitarist and I think accordionist from the Payne family. That family taught tunes to Rufus Guinchard, a great Acadian fiddler in Newfoundland. Anyways, ...
Reel de Bouctouche - Devon's Tune of the Day 057

Here's a really fun tune from the great New Brunswick Acadian fiddler Gerry Robichaud: "Reel de Bouctouche". The name's from a nearby village, but this tune was popular in the Saint-Paul area of New Brunswick just a bit North of Moncton. It's a blast to play, so try it out if you're looking for a new tune. My dad, Louis Léger, himself from Moncton, joins me on accordion for this one! This tune ...

We have a new tunebook to check out for Tunebook Tuesday! This is "Traditional Breton Dance Tunes 'Fest Breizh' - 50 Traditional Dance Tunes from Brittany". It's by David Surette who was a wonderful guitarist and mandolin player who sadly passed away in late 2021. Great tunebook though and I've just started going through it. Here's a fun one too, quite simple but stately! EDIT: I missed it in t...
#MandolinMonday: Deux Polkas à Albert Coutant- Devon’s Tunes of the Day 055

For #MandolinMonday here are two sprightly little polkas from French fiddler Albert Coutant! I did “Avant-Deux à Coutant” some months back so it’s nice to revisit his repertoire. Coutant was from the Deux-Sèvres region of Western France which was part of Poitou, so these are Poitevin polkas. They’re quite fun to play on either fiddle or mandolin! For #SqueezeboxSunday my dad learned this really lovely French bourrée at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes this year! “La Coccinelle” was written by Jean Blanchard, a key accordionist, fiddler, and bagpiper from Central France! He’s from Le Berry, which is one of my favorite spots in France and he was in La Bamboche, a key French folk revival band in the 70s. Fun tune and I actually like i...

Here’s a special treat for Tune of the Day! This setting of “Prettiest Girl in the County” comes from 19th Century WA State fiddler Charley Kahana! Charley was half Lummi and half Hawaiian, and a fiddler on San Juan and Orcas Islands in the 1870s. But he learned his dance tunes from two French-Canadian fiddlers in the San Juans, Joe Ladabouche and Edward Gagnon! Pretty cool to have those three ...

I play the tune at speed with all kinds of ornaments so you can get it in your ear, then I play it slow and stripped back a bit, then I break down most of the various special bowings and ornaments I'm using. Grondeuse à Wilfred - Devon's Tune of the Day 051

Here's a much loved tune from yesterday's source, Vermont Franco-American fiddler Wilfred Guillette. His "Grondeuse à Wilfred" has been recorded a lot because it's just so weird. He really hangs on the notes for an unusual length of time. He tunes his fiddle to the "grondeuse" tuning of ADAE, so I do that too here. Gotta do the foot percussion, or podorythmie too, that's necessary. This tune is...

Heyyy we made it to our first 50 Tune of the Days! This is a great one too. It's a wild little version of the classic Irish tune "Pigtown Fling" (or "Stony Point") called "Sa Feras Tu Sa Feras Tu Pas" from Franco-American fiddler Wilfred Guillette of Vermont. There are just two slight variations to differentiate this, but OH how lovely those two little variations are. Makes this a real special ...

@@devonleger7469 I was sure Gerry played it like that because you're very faithful to the version you hear. Around here we play the low part first. There was a little song going on with that reel and the air was on the low part. Maybe that's why we play it like we do. Also, because we didn't know it's name, and because of the song, we were calling it: La reel du d'jäbe (diable).
