Lorry Diaries

It’s About the Industry Not the Individual
I live in Ross on Wye, a small town in Herefordshire UK. I’m a single Mom to a grown up son and grandmother to 2 wonderful small people who all live in Cornwall.
I’ve been lorry/truck driving for 35+ years. I was taught to drive by my brother, who has since passed away but the knowledge he gave me is in daily use.
Come with me on my journeys around UK and Europe. See what the life of a long distance lorry driver is like. Mostly good, sometimes bad but always an adventure.
You can now by me a coffee too, using the link below.

That ramp down in to the underground depths had my ears popping and my heart rate at worry level. The noise down there with reverse bleepings, engine noise and all other noises down there are enough for a new driver to that location doing a blind side reverse could lose situational awareness. Getting out have a 👓look around, best idea. Think many delivery places want to be fully automated with no staff to help, when a little help is much appreciated. Great view of the wind frayed union flag on the cab door side, Looks amazing ✅ Safe travels and Ta for the vlogs. Please bring some ☀shine back to Uk. We need some. ☕
I agree with your comments regarding some one to watch you back, I have been HGV driving for 42 years, I’ve never known drivers be so unhelpful as they seem to be now, When I started out other Drivers would help you Fold your sheets , watch ya backup etc ,
Yes I have to agree. There seems a lot of one up man ship nowadays. 😁
I would have been more worried about that ramp making the front of the trailer open up the top of the fuel tank.... Blind side reverse...... you nailed it.... get out have a look. I often take a glove with me. pace out how far of the dock I am. then put the glove on the ground where the cab is going to be in line with it, when the back of the trailer is close to the dock. There are a couple of docks we use regular where you're usually reversing into a low sun that's sitting just above the roof line of the warehouse. Everything else is just a black shadow. I'm often bewildered how many blind side docks we have here in Australia. I can see it in Europe where the vast amount of trucks are left hand drive but here it's just bad planning, or a lack of understanding by the architect. I had a go at a couple of "truck drivers " for having a laugh at a new bloke putting a B Double on a dock. Especially when one of their trucks had a big gouge along the fuel tank and bottom step... Hoers' !!!!!It's amazing how many people were born with the whole knowledge of the universe.... Graffiti is just the same as dogs weeing on a tree.
Yes very bad planning as you are also right hand drive. 🤷🏼♀️ I’ll help anyone if I can, seems only natural to me. I don’t stand bad manners though, if you mess me about once then you’re on your own next time. 😁
hi ,wouldn't it be possible to fit wireless-free cameras to the rear of the trailer to make reversing easier? you seem to use the same trailer each time. just a thought.
I use different trailers but there may be a camera system possible but it would be down to expense, it would need to be fitted to all units & trailers. 😁
What aggravates me is when I see a tractor with a 2 man crew the driver struggling to back & the helper sitting on his fat arse when he should be outside guilding his pal to the dock. If the driver bangs into something it will be the both of them standing before the boss explaining themselves. Lazy ass helpers. !
Yes completely true. Very frustrating.
If you have to load there again, since they're willing to come outside and be helpful they might let you enter underground through the exit. Though of course you might first have to be able to explain to them in Spanish why it makes a difference (or make them watch the reversing process in this video!). The "senseless" graffiti is individuals' signatures. Everyone's basically writing "I was here" in artistic form.
Yes maybe, I’ll need to practice my Spanish a bit more first I think. Some Graffiti can be very artistic but most like this just looks like scribble. I don’t see why anyone needs to know that someone else was there 🤷🏼♀️
@@GBtrucklady I don't pretend to understand the graffitist's mindset either but I have walked a dog that couldn't go past a lamp post without saying "I was here".
😂😂👍🏻
Yeah, I dont know much Spanish either. Just the dirty words. !
😂😂
Great video thank you 🎉
Thanks for watching 😁
I always enjoy your videos, I really thought you would have had few more subscribers. You have always been one of my favorites. Stay safe.
Thank you. As long as people enjoy them and maybe a few get something out of them, that’s what matters. 😁
great video 👍
Thank you 😁👍🏻
Such great advice Sherralin, all drivers should be looking out for and helping each other. I remember well when I used to travel with my late husband who was a kamion driver. I wish you safe and trouble free travels. Gail, Czech Republic ❤️
Thank you 😁
Regarding that wagon picking up the 'bin' Sherralin, reminded when I was in the Army, and our unit was trialling this 'new' system in the early 1980's. Called DROPS, Demountable 'whatever' System? Cracking idea. A flatbed version could be loaded from an a/c onto a truck within mins. Flatbed loads of ammo etc, could be literally deposited anywhere in the battlfield, without forklift support etc, & the dvr scuttles off to further tasks. Sorry love feel like i have hijacked your station! Cracking vlog & by a side I hope your farmer son is no having too bad a time with the weather.
Thanks for the info always interesting to see the different side of things. He’s on early starts, late finishes one day then could be completely the opposite the next, chasing the weather windows planting cauliflower at the moment but he’s happy, thanks for asking. 😁
Another Great Video Excellent Blindside Please Keep Them Coming And Please Stay Safe Out There,
Thank you 😁
Love watching your videos, I Struggle so much with the reversing but getting better, you are so calm, pne day hope to be as good as you. Other half is a ,lorry driver tries to help me as you can imagine sonetimes rows! Keep up the good work. Lisa X
You’ll get there it’s just practice, some days are better than others for all of us no matter how long we’ve been doing it. A bit of a tip is to weigh the situation up as you go in or if you’re waiting for a bay, watch what line other drivers take. Good luck. 😁👍🏻
never moan about some1 reversing we all had to learn sometime , saying that ive been driving bulk tippers for 30 plus years and i still took 4 shunts to get under a loading gantry last week even tho im in the same place every week
We all have good and bad days. For me it’s the easiest ones that I usually mess up on! 😂😂
@@GBtrucklady i think we concentrate less on the easy ones
Another great vlog sherrelin stay safe
Thank you. 😁
I’ve done what you do on European work, fridges, flats, tilts,. And for the last 22 years untill I retired 18 months ago I did skips for a local recycling firm same as you observed, I had wagon & drag and it’s not a bad job, that driver had no rear window which makes the job difficult, we had rear windows in ours, for my last 7 years there I had an fh4 Volvo artic with a curtainsider trailer, no nights out for 22 years and good easy hours and mega wages, £15 p/hour time and a half on a Saturday, double time and a day in Lou Sundays and bank holls and a yearly 10% profit sharing bonus, holidays how and when you wanted to, I used to save all mine for a month off in December and get my bonus to so ended up with £2500 Holliday money and £2500 bonus (on a good year) also during covid got paid for holidays 30 days and wages as I didn’t actually take any holidays during the 2 years of covid, working for an own account company is way better than any haulage company,. Not as much glory as your job, but I’ve been there and done that and at the end of the day money matters,.
Each to their own and I’m not knocking it. I was just pointing out that lorrie’s do many jobs that people don’t realise, not just jobs like mine or supermarkets etc. Jobs like that go largely unnoticed but a bit like a cleaner, they’re soon missed when they’re not there. 😁
Cracking video as usual ! Mind how u go 👍
Thank you 😁
Hi Sherralin, another good informative video. Blind side reversing?? Yep seen many try to wing it and then there's a crunch!!! It's not "sissy"to get out and have a look and check. You'll do it fast enough when you hear that crunch!! How many in hindsight think if only I'd got out to double check. Say no more. Thanks MARK
Too true. Thanks for watching 😁
Great vlog Sherralin always look forward to seeing you on your travels stay safe and take care 👍
Take care. 😁

Thank you 😁
spot on about about blind side reversing seen one off them skip lorries lifting a skip the skip was over loaded when pulling it on the front wheels lifted up
Whoa! That sounds scary. 😦
I've had that happen a few times with heavy skips, youve got commit to it sometimes, 6 wheelers with air, drop the rear suspension and they pull on without pulling wheelies so long as the skip dosent weigh more than 15 tons,.
@cabovermike I’m guessing there’s a weight system on them too?
@@GBtrucklady Not many with onboard weighers, unlike most if not all timber lorries, we did allot of compacted cardboard and paper, also bales on my artic,. 2 x compactor skips on six axles wagon and drag regularly grossed out at 44 ton,. Even the baled cardboard grossed at 44 ton on my artic,
@cabovermike Interesting thanks 😁
Brilliant video, as always. Blind side reversing is a nightmare. I used to do it in a coach. It's not as bad as in an artic , but still bad. Very well explained. If in doubt, get out and look.
Absolutely. Thank you. 😁
Hate to see you in rungis

Don’t worry, I’m not that scary, I’m sure I’d say hello 😁

👋👋...holla....😊
Hi 👋🏻
Blind sided. Hate it, but as you say, it happens to us all. I had to back my caravan onto a pitch. Luckily, the pitches opposite me were empty, so just drove the car on the opposite pitch, and then very slowly, reversed it back. When I was doing a quick lesson of towing the caravan, he said that you don't ever panic, and don't try and rush. When on a caravan site, people are watching and seeing what mess you get it into. He said, if you take it very slowly, it will go in, and people after a few minutes will not be bothered to watch, as slow reversers are actually more professional than those who try and do it quickly, you just get unstuck. And as you said, one of those same people could have helped, especially as I was on my own, so had no one to help back me in. I would do it for my hubby, and we were a good team😊
Well done. 😁
Thanks again 👍 sherralin for your ace road 🛣️ videos in the Scania R580.
Thanks for watching 😁
Hi from France, what a great little video, reversing on the blind side isn't the easiest of things to do,you explained it very well, nice and slow is the way to go,hop out, have a look and Bob's your uncle.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
👍👍
😁👍🏻
I'd have done it one hit of course :)
Of course! 🙄

I'm on the lookout for some more lorry vloggers to watch UK/Euro based. If anybody knows any they can recommend, preferably Somebody who's got some personality, charisma, sense of humor..
😂😂 Sorry I’ve non of the above 😂😂 just boring old me I’m afraid! 😂😂😂
I'm afraid its an age thing wanting a paper copy of things 😂
😂😂 Yes, you’re probably right 😂😂
Thank you for another interesting video, enjoy your travels especially around Europe. I always wondered why trailers are not equipped with reversing cameras, especially nowadays when the technology is readily available. Surely it would make reversing, especially blind side - much easier and safer
Tbh some trailers do but all it seems to do is confuse the driver but I’ve never used one. 😁
When you started doing your reversing and saying about various things regarding people taking them p..s I thought to myself I will put a comment but you beat me to it as they forget it will come to them Monday day and they will be the one having them p..s out of them I’m afraid there’s not enough of us anymore to land hand would rather sit on their arse and watch struggle. Safe journey.
Too true. 😁
Being a granda myself, love the grandma sayings. Tizzy is such a good word.🤣🤣 Slow and steady wins the race.🤔🤔 Quite agree, it's just as easy to help as it is to criticise, and in the end probably more rewarding. Beautiful piece of reversing, if I may say so.😂😂 Nice to see you have got some good weather and strangely enough we have had the sun out in the last two days. About time. Although back to the usual in France.😎😎 Thanks again for a really interesting video. Safe journeys.
😂😁 Thanks for watching 😁
Very good and that other comment about zebra crossing are a waste of time in Spain is correct, as nobody stops when you're on one. Go carefully.
Thank you. Unfortunately there’s no “give way to pedestrians” rule in most of Europe so it’s the first to the crossing that has right of way. 😁
Helped a Tunisian driver the other day who was in the Uk and unsure if he could park near our depot . Google translate and we had a nice conversation !!
Google translate is a marvellous invention, well done you 😁👍🏻
Blind Side reverse , Total nightmare when your on your own . It takes as long as it takes to do it safely . Another great video . Stay safe out there .
Thanks for watching 😁
All ways love seeing your video, love your wise comments about reversing it, just take your time in doing it , saves a lot of paper work if you hit the trailer etc. could you please bring back some of that nice sunny weather out there. thanks and stay safe.
Thank you. I’ll try 😁🌞
Zebra crossings in Spain don't mean zip🦓🦓🦓
Many years ago when I was on a school trip to Italy our teacher told us “remember to be on your guard, there’s no “give way to pedestrians here, it’s first to the road that has right of way” She wasn’t wrong, coming from a small country village to a busy Italian town like Florence, I nearly got run over a dozen times a day! 🤦🏼♀️😂
Great vlog as usual looking forward to seeing the next one safe journey
Thank you 😁
I have recently found your channel it’s very interesting even though I go to Spain regularly but it’s in my car I see and understand things better through watching you. How much time at home do you get/ie social life, not a lot it appears.
I’m single, my son and his family live 4 hours from me, we video call at least once-twice or maybe a hundred times a day 😂😂, so there’s no rush for me to go home, I go when I want to but just because I’m not home doesn’t mean I’m on duty though also it depends on what you see as social life. I do get time off in some interesting places and I explore towns I’m in or get public transport to cities near by. I don’t drink so sitting in a pub isn’t for me, I’m not a great eater so meals out are a waste of money, I love music but not keen on crowds so although I did do festivals when I was younger I’m not really interested now. I’m not a people person to be honest, I love wide open spaces, quiet hill tops, secluded beaches and tall trees in forests. I love my little garden, I love walking, which I can do anywhere and camping, which I can do on my own. I love motorbikes and speed (only when I’m in control😂). Do I miss my friends? I’ve never been one to have a lot of close friends but those I have I speak to regularly, one old very old friend in Scotland I wish I saw more of but that would be the same no matter what job I had. Thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoy the channel. 😁
That road seems to have plenty of surface cracking I agree with you on graffiti
