Affinity Designer 2.1 Update for Sewing
This didn’t seem to work for me. Is there any other way to unlock the PDFs?
Yes, you can use the new program PatternProjector.com It is used for projecting, but you can also unlock a pattern with it. Click “Open PDF”, click on the picture of six rectangles (stitching option). An “export” button will appear. Export and save to your device. It should be unlocked and ready to use in Affinity Designer.
thank you for this tutorial. I would love to know how to do a full belly adjustment in Affinity Designer
Oh I wish I had this one. I’d like a larger throw. But my ceilings are concrete in my apt bldg. I don’t think more ceiling holes is a good idea 😢
The tensions rod or tripod setup can work for you! No ceiling holes. Checkout this article in the mounting section projectorsewing.com/magcubic-projector-review/
Great review thanks. I need a bright light, so this one won’t make me happy. Guess I’ll have to stick to my Epson UST for now, even though it’s big and runs hot.
The idea of this product is nice, but i am not sold. I see a lot of extra cost in comparison to physical patterns, but i am not seeing any time saving. The only time saving i see here is the actual cutting which is a small, small portiin of sewist time. The fact it can't turn off sizes even is a huge downer to this. Major improvements needed a long with purchasers cost reduction.
Sounds like you need to look at a DIY sewing projector. 😉 They start at $50. And there are many great PDF pattern companies out there!
This didn’t help me I’m More lost then ever but you did amazing who ever understand this
You have helped me so much with Inkscape already!
Your videos are ridiculously helpful, thanks so much for creating such easy to follow content!
@@jancpartridge Thank you! 💕
Great video!! Exactly what I needed.
Love it! I specifically came to your channel looking to find a video where I could ask this question since I wanted a simplicity pattern I couldn't find in the store and they have the PDF/Print option on their site and felt there had to be a way to take advantage of the PDF / projector option :)
@@garya1809 Yes, you can stitch them together. However, most of the Simplicity patterns are not layered. They are images of the pattern. So, be aware of that.

Wow what a smart program. I just took the plunge and bought a projector and a stand. I am so glad I found this video, I will absolutely use this program!!
Great Fall pattern choices! I'm new to projector sewing, and very intimidated, but I'm looking forward to having a block of time to play with my birthday prize! Thanks for this video!!
@@krisl.4962 Thank you! Have a great time with your new setup! 🎉
OMG i spent the afternoon trying to work on 1000+ paths and nodes from a Garment Designer pattern i made trying to stich all the paths together when all i wanted to do is just trace it.... now I know how! Thank you 😊
I’m having trouble with calibrating my image to be totally square. Do all these projectors you recommend have keystone adjustments? Mine doesn’t. It’s ceiling mounted, and perfectly square in the center, but distorted at the outer edges.
Yes, all of these projectors have keystone adjustments. Some are manual with a dial around the edge, others use digital keystone which can be found in the projector settings menu. However, if you use Pattern Projector to calibrate, perfect keystone adjustments don’t really matter anymore.
@@projectorsewing if this works, I'll buy you a gallon of coffee!
When I select a pattern piece which I want to alter, I am getting small boxes (with dotted outlines) surrounding segments of the pattern. For instance, there is one around the neckline, one around the shoulder seam and on around the armscye etc. Why are these there. With that one pattern piece selected, I am unable to change the stroke colour or width. Are there some sort of settings that I need to change?
The small boxes are also stopping me from being able to duplicate the entire pattern piece. I have tested this on more than one pattern from different designers with the same results.
@@elisewilliams8681which designer is it? Without seeing a photo, there are two possibilities that come to mind. First, you may need to ungroup the pattern if all of the pattern pieces are grouped together. Second with the neckline being seperate from the armscye, it sounds like the pattern lines are not joined. You can use the node tool to select the nodes on two parts of the pattern and join. This can be time consuming though. Sometimes it can be quicker to just trace the pattern with the pen tool depending what you need to do with the pattern. Are you in the projectors for sewing Facebook group? If so you can add a photo and get recommendations there too. Do you just want thicker lines? Or what adjustments are you planning on making?
@@projectorsewing The main pattern I have been trying to work with is a Love Notions pattern, Terra Tunic projector file. I have tried a couple of other designer's pattern and run into the same issue. I have been attempting to do a square shoulder adjustment. If I can get that sorted out, then I'd try a sway back adjustment. I did finally manage to get the lines heavier. Although I'm not sure how I did that. How do I know if the pattern is grouped and how do I ungroup all the pieces? There are tiny spaces between the boxed areas - the shoulder seam and the armscye aren't a continuos line. Yikes, there's a learning curve to this! I am in that Facebook group. I'll look through there and see what else I can find.
@@elisewilliams8681Love Notions have a known issue that the pattern lines are not joined. I find it fastest on Love Notion patterns to just trace the size you need using the pen tool, then do you pattern alterations.
@@projectorsewing Can you suggest a pattern or a designer that I could use just to play in Inkscape with. Preferably a free pattern as I just want to play with it.
I’m so happy to have found you, Sheredith, thanks so much for all this!
You are so welcome! Glad to have you here!❤
FINALLY! Inkscape presented in a clear, concise, nothing-but-what-you-need-to-know format. Well done!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for your comment!
Thank you. This is so helpful. I was wondering how to do my paper collection.🤯
Glad it was helpful!
What do yo do if you don’t want to cut piece on fold?
In this same program, you can draw a line and flip the pattern along the line to “unfold” it. Another option is to use a graphics program such as Inkscape or Affinity Designer to unfold the pieces. Checkout some of my videos on these programs if you’re interested in learning that.
I have limited space. What would be best to use with a tablet? If any at all? Thanks.
If you have at least 52” from ceiling , I like the Yoton mounted on the ceiling. Comes with builtin WiFi to connect to your tablet. The AAXA is also great if you have a larger budget. It will give you a larger cutting image size. Ultra short throws take a bit more space in the room around the table, so not great for small areas, in my opinion.
where do i get the bodice block?
You can find basic bodice blocks for sale several places. Pattern Lab London will generate one to your measurements. MiSlope is another great one for knit tops.
Yes! It does! Glad I could help!
Thank you for your effort. What I needed most and found nowhere else, was to confirm, that Affinity can export as layered PDF. (pondering to switch from Illustrator, as that feature is the only one keeping me there). So thank you again 🥰
Thanks so much!! This is packed with all the information I was looking for to get started with projector sewing.😊
🎉
Dang it, pattern projector won’t work with my operating system 😢
Hmm, what issue are you having and what device are you using? It’s web-based, so doesn’t rely on your operating system.
@@projectorsewing oh maybe I’m thinking if a different one! I have an older MAC and a lot of things won’t run because it can’t update any further. But if this is web based than I must be thinking of something rise and that’s great news! ❤️
@@LongHairCarolyn Yes, there was an older program called PDF Stitcher that you had to download to stitch patterns. Pattern Projector is a web based and can stitch patterns among many other cool features! Give it a try! Should work even on older computers 😉

What do you think is easier? Inkscape or AD? Especially for someone that isn't making lots of alterations, mainly grading between patterns and altering length. I was learning AD but have watched several videos on Inkscape and maybe seems simpler??
@@reneemorgan9320 They are both about the same to learn. Affinity Designer has less “stability” issues, but Inkscape has really improved recently. Affinity Designer currently has better options for exporting layered pattern files. Did you already purchase Affinity Designer? If so, I’d stick with learning it. Inkscape is a great free tool for making pattern alterations. I will have a full course on sewing pattern alterations in Inkscape releasing at the end of Fall.
Thank you!!
how to use affinity to move incisions around, and make incisions
Can you make the same in affinity program . I have seen you make somme videos in that program. if you Can, Will you show some of the videos in affinity. I use my Ipad
@@mettepetersen3280 I’ll have to look into using Affinity for mock-ups again. Last time I looked Inkscape had some better features for tracing the patterns and so I’ll typically not use AD for this. However, for iPad users AD might be the best option.
Thanks. I needed this. If I only want to shorten one side I assume I just only break one side and that it won't work for the fast way. For reference, I only need to shorten the front rise.
If you only want to shorten the front rise, select only the nodes in the front rise. Adding a node at the top of the front crotch and only selecting nodes above will help the crotch shape to stay intact. Select all the nodes that you want to raise, and enter how much in the transform panel.
Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge. Can I calibrate with a plain mat, using a 12” x 6.5” quilting ruler?
Yes, you can calibrate with a plain mat. It is useful to have something with which you can mark the found corners of your rectangle. You also need to calibrate to a rectangle generally within 6" or so of the projection edges. I recommend using a metal tape measure to measure the length and width of your rectangle.
I primarily use ipad for sewing. Did you offer a course for learning pattern alteration, pattern placement of fabric, etc? I just say Branelyn’s class but it does not teach ipad version. And AD had an upgrade we may need to purchase, I already purchased the original one. Also, pattern projector is freezing on me. Is there a bug or is it my connection? I have no trouble in the sewing room streaming on the tv. Thank you for all you do.
@@diannebernasconi7929 You can checkout my series of videos on AD for iPad here on RUclips. I don’t currently offer a course on that. What browser are you using on Pattern Projector? You can try switching to the Chrome browser and see if that helps.

Hi again! My husband set up my UST projector and I got Project and Cut. I was able to follow the instructions and just a few min ago projected and cut out a shorts pattern. But I wasn’t sure how to exit the program in a way that it will save my calibration setting, so here I am watching your video again! Thank you again for making this clear video on how to use this software. I was using a Ditto successfully, but some things have changed, which inspired me to look into using a UST projector. Project and cut and using a UST that is affordable have created a true game changer for my sewing. People like you have made a difference too

Thank you for the information on how to use this.
Thanks for the video! When I tried opening up my Ellie Mac pattern, it says password when it first starts to open. I just don’t put anything in that password box but find that when I’m done editing the pattern AD says I can’t export the file. I’m assuming it’s because it asked for a password when first opening the pdf. Way to bypass?
@@Fattiapples yes, you can remove the password by using PDF Stitcher or Sejda.com
There are so many different software to manipulate sewing pattern digitally, is there one that you find is the best to learn from the get go? I really don’t want to learn for each one and then decided which I prefer I just don’t have the extra time. I do have affinity designer on my Mac, should I just go with that for editing ie shortening patterns and grading etc? Or do you think Inkscape would be easier to learn vs AD. I’m also looking at patternprojector website app for calibration and putting image on my cutting mat if no modifications are needed (and perhaps also use that program to open up a modified pattern I have created).
I´m so glad I found you, I was investigating Ditto and was on the fence with buying one and looking to see if anyone still uses it after a while. You convinced me to go with a regular projector even though I don´t know anything about them. I figure I can learn how to use the hardware and software. Thank You
I made my IT guy (aka my husband) watch the video, and he's very interested in it as a gift idea for me. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Thanks!
You're Welcome! Thank you!
I just ordered the Braidol. I couldn’t get Chromcast to work well and currently have a giant hdmi cable that winds from projector to laptop and it’s a pain to unwind and wind back up every time I want to cut something out. Hoping this works better. Thanks for keeping us updated on all the things related to sewing with a projector.
You’re welcome! Yay for getting rid of the long cables 🎉 I’ve loved mine so far!
I love this idea of doing this with AD. But for some reason when I am using the node tool, nothing is coming up in the transform tool on the bottom. It all says 0 in. I am very much a total newbie with AD so not sure how to troubleshoot that? Thanks so much.
Did you select the nodes you want to move?
@@projectorsewing Apparently I had not, thank you!!
