Thank you for your very helpful videos. I wish all pattern designers would offer layered patterns. Are there any videos you can point to that would help designers to create LAYERED instead of non-layered patterns?

You’re welcome! Yes, in todays digital age, pattern companies really need to include layers in their patterns.
I don’t know of any videos off the top of my head as it can be slightly different depending what program designers are using to create patterns.
If you come across designers not using layers, the best thing to do is contact them and request they include layers in their patterns.
Then, always purchase from companies that make the efforts to include layers in their pattern files.
It takes just a little more work upfront for the designer, but makes a big difference to users.

Add thoughts on why a layered sewing pattern is showing a 'lock' icon under the Layers icon on the right-hand side of the screen? The vendor is reputable and I can see there are layers but I cannot get to the drop down Layers menu to select/deselect the size options. In other layered pdf patterns, this has not been a problem. I am using the free Adobe Reader on a Mac. Thanks for any help you can offer

First, make sure the pattern is indeed supposed to be layered. (Read the description on sales page).
Try redownloading the pattern. Sometimes they get corrupted.
Another reason seems to be if your Mac opens the file in “preview” mode. Sometimes it flattens the file. Set Adobe Acrobat Reader as the default PDF reader and change the default in your browser so it doesn’t automatically open patterns after downloading.

I have found it will only work in Acrobat Pro, which is a paid for level.

Why don't I have a layer icon in my adobe program? Neither right dive or left or expanded search?

@@laureldehaan58 Check that you’ve opened the full program and are not in the “preview” that opens in the browser. The full program mode should have these visible.

how to create groups of layers in that program?

Adobe Acrobat Reader cannot change or group the layers. You would need to use Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer to group or create layers.

      @@projectorsewing I think I understand but I will ask differently :)
I have a file in pds. This file has a lot of layers, I want these layers to be visible in Adobe Acrobat, so that a person who does not have ps can choose from the layers to have on the graphic, but I want these layers to be in 3 groups because it would be 3 printable objects on one page. I understand that in order to do this I have to use the programs you recommended?

So, you are working in Photoshop? Photoshop is for images and doesn’t really export to PDF files for opening in Adobe Acrobat reader. You could export several different options of PNGs, but photoshop doesn’t export PDFs.
If you want to create a layered PDF, you’d need to use a program that exports layered PDF files such as Adobe Illustrator. You can import the PNG files you want to use as layers individually into Illustrator and create a layer for each image. Then, export a layered PDF from Adobe Illustrator.
