    That's an expensive bike Nick. I looked it up. Don't give up on pedaling around, it's still the most cost effective. Couple rides here in Spring, not much since because of temps. Curious: The failed display looks like traditional Grey LCD. What is the Blue display method? LCD displays don't tolerate extreme heat or cold well (personal experience)

      @@danishnative9555 Hi Paul, expensive you say? I think not. When I was looking around for an E bike the cheapest from any shop round here was £2000! This one cost £750. Big risk buying it on Amazon without being able to try it, but I've been quite happy with it overall. Not sure about the display issue, its been out in fairly hot weather and the coldest was probably around 32 F! Don't know why the new ones blue but hey at least I got it working. I worked out it costs me about half a pence a mile to run, so it's probably paid for itself in the unused diesel I would have used in the car. I would think its great riding territory out in UT, but yes the extreme temperatures would be off-putting. 73 Nick

    I just got a couple of these and noticed both are about 26kHz high. It appears they're using the QN8027 FM transmitter chip and yes, there's fairly strong output at more than one frequency on the FM band. The QN8027 datasheet says the xtal should see a 20pf load on each side of the xtal. The SM crystal on my unit is grounded at the diagonal corners and the other 2 corners go to pins 1 & 2 on the QN8027. I soldered 15pf SM caps on each side of the xtal and 88.1MHz is now within 100 Hz. The problem I have is that the unit does not transmit in Stereo until I bump the frequency up 100 kHz and then down 100 kHz (up to 88.2 down to 88.1). At first I thought the 26 kHz high fundamental was outside the FM tuner AFC capture range, but now that it's dead nuts on frequency, it still doesn't send the stereo signal until I bump the frequency as described. I've verified this behavior on 2 different FM tuners. If I leave the xmit module powered on after my frequency bump trick, all FM tuners immediately show stereo reception when they're powered on. There must be something in the firmware of the processor driving the chip that doesn't enable stereo until the frequency is changed. My application for this thing is somewhat unusual. I have an FM tuner with only line out and headphone out. The headphone volume is controlled via front panel up/ down buttons. I'm adding a small power amplifier inside the tuner box to drive speakers. The input to the amp is derived from the headphone output and volume is controlled from the from the front panel. My plan was to mount the little FM xmit module in the tuner cabinet and keep it tuned to 88.1 MHz. I'll have a jack on the rear panel to accept audio input to the module and tune the FM tuner to 88.1 MHz to listen to the external source with volume controlled as I would for any FM station. The FM tuner is a modular affair and the line and headphone amps are integrated so I can't break into them. Otherwise, I'd just put in a switch to select the external source or the internal tuner. I'll definitely have to do some filtering to get rid of the spurious output from this thing if I continue down my current path.

    • @ptronix
      @ptronix Месяц назад

      That's rather odd behaviour. I've never noticed any of the ones I have do that. Quite an achievement to get within 100 Hz. Maybe you have too much capacitance and that's upsetting the chip? Did it behave like that before you did the mod? On the ones I worked on I thought to get it within 1 kHz was more than good enough on the wide bandwidth of stereo FM. Most of the ones I've used are not transmitting stereo, they're used to relay various pieces of ham radio gear. In that case there's often a link on the board to set to mono. Thanks for the comment

    • @ctbcubed
      @ctbcubed Месяц назад

      @@ptronix Yes, it did not transmit stereo on initial power up before I added the xtal load caps. I thought maybe the center frequency was too far off for the tuner to lock in the stereo pilot signal. I also tried jumping out the mono link momentarily after power up to see if that forced it into stereo, but that didn't work. I only had 15 pf surface mount caps, so getting the frequency so close was just luck.

    • @ctbcubed
      @ctbcubed Месяц назад

      @@ptronix Hello again. After some more experimenting with the FM TX module from Amazon, I found that I can force stereo mode on power up by placing a 330 MF capacitor across the MONO jumper pads located on the PCB. This causes the jumper pads to be "shorted" until the capacitor becomes charged a few seconds after power is applied. I also discovered that simply plugging a 3.5mm plug into the audio in jack will force stereo mode on a module that's already powered. However, leaving the plug in place during power up does not force stereo mode. This module has a small microphone onboard and I think the firmware forces MONO mode unless something changes after power is applied. That makes sense since the mic is monophonic. Changing the transmit frequency or plugging something into the audio in jack are 2 things that work to force STEREO mode after power is applied.

    • @ptronix
      @ptronix Месяц назад

      @@ctbcubed ah yes now I remember, when I used one in a DAB radio that I wanted to listen to on an FM tuner, I removed the jack socket and hard wired it. I found I had to link a couple of the pads where the socket was connected to make it transmitt in stereo. But it always did after that. So that doesn't explain why yours doesn't. But at the end of the day I've been quite impressed with the audio quality, just a shame about all the spurious crap it produces through the FM band.

Also I don't want to take it down and apart again. Its been happily working for several years now and that's where it will stay unless it went faulty. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for offer of equipment, but I think it would be difficult to get it here at the moment and also probably expensive. Best regards Nick

    Wow, very impressive, clean RF performance Nick. Looks like this is a very fine radio for the money, with just the noisy display issue for them to resolve. And maybe a tweak or two to make the power level setting more accessible, things like that. Interesting, using the acoustic signal generator like that! Think you gave them their money's worth on this honest, thorough review.

      I'd thought along the same lines, but what's the conductivity over its surface? Needs to be low resistance for maximum shielding and how would you connect an earth to it?

    • @Alchemist39
      @Alchemist39 2 месяца назад

      I'm pretty sure that's called kapton tape and it's pretty nonconductive to say the least. You pretty much need some sort of micro mesh like used in vfd displays maybe 🤔

  • @fjs1111
    @fjs1111 2 месяца назад

    I have a few thoughts, maybe this will help.. 1) The display itself has an ITO or conductive layer as part of the screen and that itself would probably be enough to block the noise, some LCDs also have a metal can on the back - not yours maybe 2) I don't think the LCD is interfering with your signal because it's not using CCFL or EL backlight, LED backlight drivers operate at frequencies far below your HAM frequencies 3) I believe what is actually occurring is your ground plane/cage is creating a better near field antenna, it may not make much of a difference in the far field but try a different antenna. It's very likely either a bad antenna OR/ could be a bad quality low-gain PGA/VGA on the RF front end. Hope this helps.

    • @ptronix
      @ptronix 2 месяца назад

      But it's not an LCD display. Its colour LED which I suspect needs a higher drive level. Typically this will be some sort of square wave, maybe in the 10s of kHz. And as we all know square waves have harmonics up to VHF in this case. Its definitely radiating off the front of the display. I can hold a spectrum analyzer probe near it and see the noise level increase by 20 db on 145 Mhz. If you put a different antenna on the radio that's not near it of course this problem goes away.

    • @Alchemist39
      @Alchemist39 2 месяца назад

      @@ptronix Absolutely correct my friend! Radiating from the front obviously! I was originally thinking along the lines of fjs1111 but that would only be correct if it was a fluorescent backlit LCD. Even the Baofeng, QUANSHENG, etc. radios have LCD displays backlit by LED with no interference issues at all. Including full color LCD displays like on my Baofeng 5RM! Much better engineered radios than tidradio obviously. What a fail tidradio and I almost considered buying one of their radios recently! Sure glad I came across your other video first (watched it till the end 😉) before buying such a flawed designed tidradio 🙄 oye 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @ptronix 2 месяца назад

      At least I got it for free! If I'd bought it with that problem I'd be demanding a refund! Its not an Lcd display its LED and herein lies the problem. They obviously need more drive current for the multiplexing. And that is causing the noise. There is absolutely no advantage in this display apart from looking pretty. Their technical department says thats normal with that display but it's certainly not acceptable! I'm working on a fix, some sort of screening to stop it radiating. Its on operating table at the moment. But there's so little space in there it's touch and go whether the patient will survive. Thanks for watching

    That's a lot of radio at $60 US. Ten watts is impressive but as you say that's got to drain the battery pretty quickly. Fair trade though, can't expect it not to eat power in exchange. Agreed, that's a pretty display for the short time it's up. Shame it's such a noise source on VHF! Maybe that's why it shuts itself off so quickly Needs some kind of transparent shielding?
