Very interesting experiment Nick, thank you

In order to drastically reduce the reflections in my Hi Fi listening room I have installed ten large sealed membrane pressure bass traps and seventeen wide band velocity bass traps. Sadly this was expensive but the improvement in sound quality is astonishing. I now have deep kick ass bass and a lovely smooth mid range and treble with no peaks or dips. Also the stereo sound stage has become wide and three dimensional. On some recordings I hear sounds that seem to come from the immediate left or right of my listening position which is almost scary.

All that's a bit beyond me Jim, but if you want the ultimate listening experience then good on you. The weirdest audio experience for me was recording in binaural with two small microphones attached to my ears! I recorded my parents walking around talking. When played back through headphones I could actually follow them round the room! Best wishes nick

It's hard to frequency compensate for hearing loss from too many years of listening to Rock N' Roll on a hi-power APA driving JBL L222"S. I sometimes regret, but not much worried about EQ beyond the original crossovers. Love your technical videos, cheers and peace Nick to you and all in the UK. Stay Smart Always.

Hi Danish , my hearing has suffered over the years, I'm now down to about 13 kHz. One ear is better that the other. In my case I think the damage was done in the early '90s going to a lot of "acid house" parties and coming out deaf.
Thanks for all your comments and glad you get something from my videos.

Testing new speakers and a new mic with no calibrated reference for either one, I'm not sure you can learn too much about either instrument individually, but it's entirely fair to say you've got a good image of what the pair of those instruments can do, in that room.
If I remember this right, those little electret microphones are actually pretty flat over 20Hz-20kHz even without calibrated compensation - perhaps swapping in that electret, aimed at and relatively close to the speaker, can give you a reasonable baseline response on the new speakers.
And I think those new speakers look quite fine. Time to tour your music library with them! Start with Led Zeppelin, maybe?

Yes I know Matambale, a rather pointless test but I did get to play with the spectrum analyzer function on the scope, which leaves a lot to be desired. It really needs a keypad so cumbersome to set up.
They're not really for loud music, that's reserved for my celestions downstairs.
Led zeppelin one of my all-time favourite groups, along with ABBA of course!
Favorite track probably is "when the levee breaks" last track on the forth album. Very bluesy. The other one is the last track on side 1, where sandy Dennis from fairport convention sings with Robert plant (forgotten its name).

@@ptronix Absolutely "When The Levee Breaks" - Bonham's incredible drumming, and I can hear that harmonica right now. (Edit: it was driving me nuts, the second tune -- "The Battle of Evermore" -- I had to look it up)

Hi Nick, interesting stuff. I’ve never been on audio stuff yet so I see and learn some new things here. The speakers you built with the Focal woofers are very nice, you should put you brand on, PTronix! I’m sure they sound well too!
Out of subject, yesterday I was using once again my Marconi generator 2022E and want to thank you again for the help you gave me in the past. He’s still working great and is well calibrated! A little workhorse which I’ll keep in the lab.
    Bye for now
    Diego

Hi diego, good your 2022 working well, they're a great little signal generator. Original cost £6500 in 1987. Always happy to help with my knowledge.
I know you have not much interest in audio, but it was really a rather pointless test, but gave me more experience in using the spectrum analyzer function. It leaves a lot to be desired, namely a keypad. Its very cumbersome to set up and use. Sorry not watched your videos on mobile operation, never had much interest in hf, 2m always my favourite band. Heard Serbia a few days ago. Sporadic e but too weak to have a contact. '73

@@ptronix Not that i’m not interested but rather never happened to me to work with audio stuff, at least for repairing. I have an 2 Ch amplifier for the car by the way, with a couple of front speakers.
I had a nice qso on 6M band from the car with Greece, but not filmed. Hey perhaps with good prop we can meet on 6. Harder on 2 but you never know. Not sure if you’re equipped for 6 though. I’m going to make a duplexer for the 857 to connect both antenna ports to the Atas antenna, maybe a subject for a future video.
      Best wishes

@@IZ0MTW duplexer sounds like an interesting project. I did have a dipole up for 6 last year, but didn't really excite me. The usual European countries were fairly strong. In the days before 6m used to receive TV from all over Europe in the summer. Heard some Italian fm stations recently overpowering the BBC, which is not a bad thing!

@@ptronix :) By the way I have a couple of Yagi antennas in my country house’s cave, one 9 element for 2M and one 19 el for 70cm. Had fun with them back in the days. I like those bands too but never worked seriously there.
I remember once driving in Spain on holiday and receiving an FM italian station for a while!

My AV receiver has a microphone for calibration. which should be reasonably flat. I might try it. I seem to recall on your last video when you were looking at the published specs that the frequency response was far from flat. I've never listened to my calibration mic. I would expect it to be more flat, but probably quality challenged.

Rather a pointless test Michael, but interesting all the same. From what I can see the microphone drops off a lot at the low end. But I like it & will use it in future videos. Thanks for watching
